I particularly like the shots you've taken crouched down and angled slightly up. Creates a very pleasing perspective. I guess I would have liked more of the building behind blurred out to make your scholarly subject pop out even more. Great video work too of course. Bravo!

Thanks for demonstrating HSS on the Z9. I'm still waiting on mine but I've watched almost every video on it in preparation of receiving it and no one really touches on HSS (especially since it doesn't have a mechanical shutter). Do you have to change a certain setting for it to work on the z9?
Thank you. And no it works just like every other Nikon. As long as your flash setting is in Auto FP Sync or whatever it is. It works the same as every other camera up to 1/8000th I believe.

Ike, I know this is an older video. So I’m not sure you’re still checking the comments. If you are, can you clarify something for me please? On Westcott’s website, they say the Z9 is only compatible with the FJ 400 and the corresponding trigger in manual mode. So I understand that to mean no TTL. What about HSS? Given your shutter speeds here, I am assuming that works fine shooting with the Z9, correct?
Yes. I never shoot TTL with OCF so I didn’t even know that TTL didn’t work. That’s odd. But yes HSS works just fine.
@@Photomeike I’ve been shooting with Profoto strobes for about 8 years. But I’ve been considering buying into a different lighting ecosystem and looking at Westcott. This video, and your response to my question, was the final contributor to my decision. I ordered the FJ400 yesterday. Thanks.

@@Photomeike I own half a dozen Profoto strobes and don’t plan to get rid of them. If the FJ400 is solid, I may expand the system. This is more of a test purchase for something reliable that is not quite as expensive as the Profoto line. I have two of the Profoto A10s as part of my kit. It’s the model that replaced the A1X. Very good on-camera/off-camera small strobes. I haven’t used them on-camera since I acquired my Z9 bodies, but I have used them off-camera. Profoto plays really nice with the Z9.

I have two questions, what brand of external screen is the one you are using and why is it facing towards the model?
I’m glad you asked the second part. Very observant. The screen is the Atomos Ninja V recorder that’s what allows me to record my EVF so you can see what I see when i shoot.
The reason I had it facing the model was because in the library I couldn’t talk very much. So I wanted her to be able to see herself to help her pose. Also because I had the camera on silent mode. She could see the screen flash and know when i was talking a photo.

I truly don't understand how you're shooting 1/3200th with a flash. Did I miss something during class? I was always taught the max was 1/250....
That is true. I am using High Speed Sync (HSS) which allows me to shoot with flash past the native sync speed of 1/200 or 1/250. Most modern flashes have this feature now.

Because I wanted to shoot RAW. 30fps is locked into JPEG. JPEG would have been fine. But I’m so used to shooting RAW that I don’t even consider it.
