    Love you guys, but Chelsea let me down on this one! I've got about 20k shots on the Mark II. I thought I loved the original R5, but the Mark II autofocus blows it away! I photograph moving subjects in a crowd of other moving subjects and with the original I sometimes struggled to focus on my intended target (dual BBF). With the Mark II I am locked on to shots I'd never get with the original. You rightfully panned some of the "features", but hopefully nobody is buying this camera for the gimmicky generative AI, Eye Control AF, etc. I have not even tested the eye control focus. Why would I when I'm able to focus on exactly what I want so precisely? Some of the other fixes that I love are: I can use the electronic shutter now. It doesn't have rolling shutter (at least not in my use cases), I can adjust the frames per second and it makes as much or as little noise as I want it to. On the original I tested the electronic shutter once and for 4 years I only used mechanical shutter. I think I used the mechanical shutter on the Mark II about 10 times and don't see any reason to ever use it again. Great upgrade! C'mon Chelsea!!!

    • @pianofinger
      @pianofinger 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I agree with fully with Everything you said. I used the mechanical shutter one day till I realized that my strobes can now be used with electronic shutter which I couldn't do with the original R5. That alone will help to enable longer life go the camera.

    • @JohnMihelakis
      @JohnMihelakis 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      yea i figured the only reason to buy is the autofocus, but for most of us that do portraits... i think 4k to upgrade is not really worth it right now. maybe if i sell my R5, but i love this thing way too much haha idk its just easy and im used to it. rather spend the money on glass or a R6ii for better low light video

    • @nubscrub

      Something to note is that the dynamic range is at it’s fullest potential in mechanical shutter so when you do landscapes and want the most, worth to change there.

    Tony, please please stop recommending camera manufacturers start adding internal storage. The cons far out weigh the pros. You keep comparing cameras to phones (rightly so) but look at the way storage has gone in phones. Insane high pricing for the high storage options, the lowest cheapest storage option will be for marketing only and likely be pathetically too low to be that useful, it’s likely manufacturers will start removing the option for removable storage (like on phones) particularly on entry level cameras to ‘to reduce cost’. Finally for the same reason people want double card slots, the most likely thing on a camera to wear and fail is the storage, let’s not make a failure point permanently part of the camera.
    Hasselblad etc get away with this because they are not main stream cameras this stuff doesn’t matter, most people will never have one of these, they aren’t getting the hammering a sports camera gets, they shoot slow etc etc you understand it’s a different demographic.
    Companies can’t be trusted with this sort of thing and you know it, look at Apple, Samsung, Adobe when they start getting away with something they won’t stop. It’s not worth the slight speed increase, once we go down this path it will be too late. Please stop.

      @LaveaFirmis 9 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @@gilgameshuruk2644 Tony has several videos of cards failing on him randomly, either from wear or random failure. I've had 2 go on my and I used to work in a computer shop and it wasn't uncommon to see SSD's fail and they aren't getting the battering camera media often is. If you haven't had a card fail I would consider yourself quite lucky because I bet I've shot for less time than you. If it wasn't much of concern why do most professional photographer insist on shooting with redundancy to 2 cards, they would use it as expanded storage instead.
      Saying that It's not a great idea to use things like CF cards or USB sticks for extended periods as back ups or archives. They aren't designed for it, from what I've read in some parts of the world without being plugged in they can start to lose their data in as little as a year (something to do with humidity). Theres a good reason magnetic media (even tape) is still used for backups not solid state. Dont take my word for it, look it up but if you care about that data dont use SD, CF, USB sticks for long term storage.

      👍 Exactly what I'm doing, you dont need to buy it used and its still at a good discount price. Especially for those cameras, I don't need 30 FPS, even for wildlife and I don't do video. I have been taking good photos for years using a 5D MK III and 7D MK II on my 500 mm F4 MK II with ex 1.4 III TC. I got the R5 new, at discount price when the MK II was announced. When the 5D MK II specs were released, it became clear for me that the new features did not worth the price difference... I've tried to set up eye control about 15 times and it moves near but not right on the area I need. Vanessa Joy said she had to calibrate it 25 times, so maybe 10 more times and it is perfect. A problem is that 80-year-old eyelids tend to puff up and move closer together, so maybe this feature isn't for old people.

    I am with Chelsea on this. While some of the upgraded features on the Mark II are really nice, for what I do, there is no justification for the substantial difference in price. In fact, I just 'upgraded' to the original R5 from my much older R and much less expensive R7, (the latter of which I sold to help finance the purchase).
    As I have done for several decades of photography, I rarely if ever run out and buy the newest greatest camera available. Instead, I put my money in good glass which I tend to keep and use for many years. For example, when I switched from DSLR to mirrorless about 4 years ago, I still had a first generation, 2006 model, Canon EF 70-200 L lens which I had purchased used in 2012- an $800 investment for ten years of viable usability.
    Perhaps in 2027 I might pick up a Canon R5II for a couple thousand dollars less than the current price. Until then, I will be more than happy to hit the field with my R5 and my original R as a back up platform.
    Totally agree that Canon's user menu is dreadful.

    I’m glad I’ve got my R5 just after Christmas, and I’ve got it at a significantly reduced price, and if you take into account trading my 5D Mark IV, and Canon’s cash back, it ended up being half price. I was expecting the R5 Mark II to be announced around May, and it still was a no brainer for me to get the original R5. Judging by how incremental are usually Canon’s upgrades, especially at the high end cameras, I couldn’t justify paying almost double the price for the Mark II, when the original R5 was already a huge leap from my 5D Mark IV. I’m also not a professional photographer, so that’s another factor to take into account.

Yes, some won’t need to upgrade but for others it will be a very important upgrade. Y’all did’t mention any of the new AF areas or even the pre-shooting or the fps boost feature. It’s like you didn’t really seriously use the camera. Maybe Canon would listen to you if you made more serious in-depth review as you use to do. There is a lot of time pitching for your sponsors and talking about people being lured into spending more money. If you guys are so burnt out on camera reviews “I’m tired of it”, maybe you should start planning your next careers…..oh, I’ve had my copy for over a month and I actually know how to remove the hot-shoe cover.

I am sure you would find reviews on the internet relating to the specific functions you enjoy but perhaps many others are not bothered with them. They covered everything of interest to me but before buying I would wait until all the early bugs have been sorted especially the one where the camera freezes and you have to remove the battery to get it to work again. This is a fault with many models of Gopros and they have not found a fix yet.

    So... when the R5 came out, the nay sayers complained that it did not have a stacked sensor and it overheated. But now, that does not matter. Because at ISO 100 to ISO 400 there is a fraction of a difference in DR... That about sums up what I think of internet "reviews".
    I dont know the details of various demosaicing algorithms . All I know is if you sample a signal at twice the Nyquist frequency, you can reconstruct the entire signal mathematically. So if the pixels are spaced such that the Nyquist frequency of the change in light intensity fits that requirement, you can mathematically reconstruct any resolution. I dont know where the AI comes into this. Would be good is somebody with knowledge could look at this. I just know that processing R7 images at higher ISO in Darktable does make a difference when selecting different algorithms. And this attempt Canon has at calculating higher MP may have merit but it is a crappy attempt.
    You really want to send your camera in for repairs in 8 years time because the internal storage finally failed? Hasselblad etc are for idiots who think fast internal storage is somehow a thing.

    You missed one of the most important features on the mark2 for wildlife and action and that is the half a second-15fps raw pre-capture. That pre-capture, the better AF, and the faster readout/almost no rolling shutter makes it worth the upgrade.

    Thank you guys for this great video, it was a pleasure to watch as always.
    However I can’t personally recommend KEH, after 3 bad experiences buying lenses and trying to sell.
    Description of condition not matching the actual item at all, to an extend where it felt like deception.
    At least the mpb lenses were in good enough condition to keep.
    The KEH lens I bought had a bunch of big scratches on the front glass element that showed very obviously in the images and had a bunch of dust inside, even though it was rated as in “excellent” condition.
    Very disappointing, but I finally learned my lesson.
    I’m still buying used lenses, but has much better luck with mpb, they are not perfect, but the descriptions actually matched the product.
    Alas the smudged greasy and dusty exterior was the same on KEH and mpb.
    So they required a lot of love and cleaning after arrival, none of the KEH lenses were ever in good enough condition to keep though so I didn’t bother.

    The Canon R5 is the best choice for photographers IMO but if you are financially capable and need video then the Canon R5 Mark II is the way to go, again IMO 👍👍😎. I have the R6 and R5 and love both cameras but I don't shoot video, mostly Landscape and family photography. Great video guys, hey did Tony get his hands working 🤣🤣🤣

    A helpful comparison, thanks, though I'm not persuaded that the Mark II is worth the difference in price. Nevertheless, I need a second camera as a back-up for my R7/ RF 100-500, which I use almost exclusively for birds and wildlife, and I'm pretty pleased with my results despite the crop sensor and slow sensor read-outs. I'm therefore torn between the original R5 and a second R7. I'd love to hear from users of both as to their experiences in terms of image quality, bird eye-tracking, and low-light performance.

    I think one thing which isn't touched upon, being that judging from Canon online specs, the original R5 uses an FSI sensor, while the R5 Mark II uses a BSI sensor. BSI sensors often have better capability when it comes to light, as they gain an extra f-stop equivalent, and typically perform better at higher ISOs.

    The Canon R5 Mk 2 seems to offer everything that the Nikon Z8 does. But I'd still go for the Nikon system, because they support 3rd party lenses, while Canon forces you to buy their lenses exclusively. I own a mix of Tamron, Sigma and Nikon lenses, and really appreciate the choice. Canon restricts me, and I don't like that.

    I think the reason why cameras don't have access security is because it would be a hassle to put in a password every time you turned them on plus if its a bright sunny day you would not see the screen too well. There would be a risk of missing shots entering a password too. I would hire one before buying and my R7 is fine for the time being even if I do miss more in flight shots. I would buy once all the early bugs have been sorted with it and at a discount price in about a years time. Maybe there could be an R7Mk2 then as well to try.

    just 4 months used with RF 24-105 4L and RF 100 2.8 + 256 GB card 300MB/s
    In 3465 USD. On the other hand R5mark2 is 4265 USD. I also don't have any lens.
    There are 2 options first is buy the 2 lens with R62 or
    2nd option is R52 with Rf50 1.8... later on I'll upgrade my lens 24-105.. is it worth to sacrifice more money. I want 4,5 years future safe. If you're in my place what you'll do??

Donno what your actual conclusions were, but R5 ii is actually an enormous upgrade from orig R5 wrt autofocus, precapture implementation, and eye control AF. Menu and flexibility of setup have also been greatly improved. From my perspective of wildlife (especially bird) photography - well worth the upgrade cost. I own both the R5 and the R5 MkII. I prefer the vastly improved electronic shutter read-out speed of the MkII for panning shots of birds and aircraft (my main subjects). The "vehicle" focus tracking setting is also much better with the MkII and I find much less wandering if a light pole or other object temporarily enters the frame. So I will recommend a third option: Sell the R5 to KEH and replace it with the R5 MkII.

    What annoys me about GPS is that it records the location of the photographer and not the location of the subject. That often is a huge difference. It should not be too complicated for the camera to find the location of the subject, as it has the focal length, the direction and the focus. So if I take a photo of the Eiffel Tower from a mile away, it should be possible for the camera to calculate the location of the Eiffel Tower.

      R1 is definitely a more specialized camera for low-light high speed photography where deeper buffers and world-class high ISO performance is critical. Think night-time sports. The R5 Mk2 is a phenomenal camera, but so is the R1. Frankly, I am glad that Canon differentiated the cameras more so than the Nikon Z8/Z9.

    I'm stickin w my R5.... If they'd done an actual substantial real resolution bump, I'd have an R5ii already. But as you determined, otherwise not critical unless you're a sports or perhaps wildlife shooter. I find pixelshift does some strange artifact things shooting stationary artwork=odd. A single raw shot produces clearly superior files. Slightly better files when you tell photoshop to quadrupel your rez when opening in camera raw, but not enough better than just in photoshop interpolation to make me do it with all painting files. O... you two are adorable. Thanks for many years of good and relevant advice.
