Unlock the Secrets of Off Camera Flash: a Beginner's Guide!

  • In this video, I demonstrate how easy flash is to use off-camera. It's a beginner's guide. Learn the secrets in minutes!
A couple of weeks ago, I headed to a disused runway full of incredible old rusty military vehicles, including this remarkable Mig Jet.
I knew the jet was at the location and I wanted to photograph it in a different way from the norm. As a Professional Photographer of 20 years, I have a passion for creative lighting, i.e. Off-Camera-Flash. This is why I decided to use this technique to show the Mig off in all it's glory.
Even though I was up against time, I thought I would create a "how to" guide so you guys can not only follow along but give it a go yourselves too.
    Cheap Flash
I used a Yongnuo 560 MKIV Flash that I purchased brand new for £39 five years ago. I was surprised just how much these flashes have increased in price post-covid. They're still excellent flashes though!
Where is the runway and Mig?
I'll be making a few more videos from here in the coming weeks but please don't ask me where it is. The site is on an active military base in the UK. Being ex-RAF does have its perks I guess!
Thanks to Lee for an epic couple of days and to Martyn for the heads-up.
    Hope you enjoy the video

I wish every photographer taught this way Gary. I actually think other photographers deliberately leave settings out, but you teach those essential details and I’m so grateful I found your channel. As for the photoshop bit, it’s just knowing how to use layers an the brush tool, so I’m good there. Thank you Gary!

Pointing out that the meter in the middle just means an average of a mid exposure & not an 'appropriate' exposure would be good for beginners. Beginners think 'proper or correct' exposure means they will get what they see.

Been practising your Model Training: Drifting Slowly and Eyes Back to the Camera. I discovered recently that I get the best expressions if I'm quick enough to take the shot while the model is still moving, rather than when she comes to a resting point or holds/stops for a moment.

Olympus/OM cameras allow this to be done in-camera using "live composite mode". The camera shoots a sequence of images but only records any changes in the image then stacks them in camera to produce the finished picture. It's designed for light painting.

If you have parts of the scene that are just that 'bit' to high to reach...glue a hot shoe onto a walking stick ( or something along those lines ) then you can lift the flash up higher ! Works well on building where there's a feature you might not normally get ;-)

    Hi Gary,
A bit ashamed to have to admit to having misplaced the videos of the 7 part post processing course. I know I have them safely tucked away somewhere on my computer, but after a fair bit of searching around I have not so far tracked them down. Can I download them again, or is there an easy way to pinpoint just where they are, and to be able to start out again to try to make a better job of printing some stuff. Hoping there is a magic wand, which I can shake at my computer. It would be better than going out tone garage for that big lump hammer. !!
On second thoughts a bit of practice with the lump hammer might not be such a bad thing.
