Damage to property by fire, caries a maximum of Life Imprisonment, with parole. Explosive fireworks through the letter-box, must cause damage... it's therefore Arson, carrying life imprisonment.
Exactly! And she was 23, not 15. And she didn't call 911 when she saw the fire. Even if you truly can't find your phone, you can alert your neighbor and have them call.

I'd seriously recommend learning some history too, because life was not dandy in the past...abuse, rape and murder, death by neglectful companies without worker safety protections, anti-union violence, racist lynchings, terrible healthcare, especially mental healthcare (AND COUNTLESS WARS) were all over the place with even less avenues for the average person to seek justice. Hence why religion was so popular, just to be able to cope with the sheer awfulness of everyday life. Next, of course there has ALWAYS been crime, wars, etc... this has been going on ever since the world BEGAN. Starting with the first physical mur...der of Cain kil...ling his brother Abel. Erm...do you seriously think I'm not aware of this? I have even lost 2 cousins who were viciously mur...der..ed years ago.
That's not what I'm talking about. I'm saying that I can clearly see/hear/read that people are becoming more & more desensitized to these crimes, criminals & regarding dea..th, in general [in this dea..th culture that we are now living in]. Deny it if you want to, but it's true.
In other words...NOT everyone but more & more people are starting to justify mur...ders [calling evil good & good evil], playing devil's advocate for the mur...der...ers, victim blaming and/or shaming & callously making nothing of these heinous crimes they have committed. It wasn't like that before.
Further, people are becoming more intrigued & mesmerized by serial kil...lers, literally glorifying them with books, movies, art, idolatrous, cult-like followings & with many women even wanting to marry [THESE SICK MONSTERS] in prison, etc.
Part of that has to do with the constant narrative being pushed [whether people realize it or not] that it was all the over the top, abusive, deranged, strict "Christian mother's" fault for the way she abused her [serial kil...ler] son, as a child... Uh huh...riiight. Lol Talk about PROPAGANDA! ;-)
So, of course many people are starting to feel sad/sympathy for the poooooor serial killer/s [not the victims] who had such a horrible upbringing due to their [CRAZY] "Christian" mother and/or parents"... Lol It's all done purposely & that's why the narrative is almost always the same with these serial kil...ler's so-called back stories. To make people think that [all] "Christians" are sooooo horrible, abusive & crazy. Lol ;-)
Additionally, we are now seeing the indoctrination & desensitization of society to accept & justify more mur...der/dea..th through the push for the legalization of abor...tion & through the likes of euthan...asia, assisted sui..cide , that they are fervently trying to get all countries on board with. Along with a whole bunch of other [deadly agendas] that I'm not going to get into here but that people are going along with/accepting.
So, society IS becoming more & more desensitized to death, justifying & defending these murderers/murders/atrocities. All one has to do is read the comments all over social media to see that this IS indeed happening...

As a former prankster all I can say is dowsing something with lighter fluid and setting it in fire is FAR from a prank. That like cutting the brake line to a vehicle and thinking nothing serious will happen just a bumper to bumper accident. IMO she’s a lunatic.

I agree, I've played stupid pranks when I was in college---but none of them damaged any property, much less ever put anyone in danger of harm. In no way, shape, or form, is setting fire a "prank."

Yes. Pranks are for fun, not harm, even if it's mildly sadistic. This lady wanted to punish & harm, & relished in it, until caught. She might have remorse now, but she's certainly a dangerous individual.
She was 23, a former Girl Scout and a college graduate who had already been arrested for vandalism. She knew her actions were illegal and she knew full well that fires spread and can cause destruction and death. Even when the building was engulfed she chose not to get help. This goes way beyond a person with impulsivity. She is a revenge seeking, reckless criminal. This wasn’t an “oops” moment it was a full blown crime that took innocent lives and she belongs in prison.

When the fire grew out of control and she did nothing to stop it. Then lied about not being able to find her cellphone. Then, she saw that people had died and still didn’t turn herself in. Supposedly spent the night praying and crying?? For who? Herself. If she really did. She was proud of herself. She didn’t care. Telling the victims that she is their family, now?? That she can somehow ‘carry on their dreams’ as if it doesn’t matter that their lives are over? No remorse. She isn’t mentally ill in the way of someone who can be rehabilitated. She has a personality disorder with a grave lack of remorse. Learning about the victims’ interests and starting a choir bc one liked music is not remorse. That’s using her victims as a way to get personal acclamation and invade on their grief to get closer to her ex and get the validation from his family that he denied her. No telling what else she got away with.
@@-Reagan I have a huge problem with her getting out. She has nothing to offer the world. She just wants freedom. Sometimes we make bad decisions in life. And then we get to move on. Her decision was terrible. There were parents that never got to watch their children grow up there were people that burned alive.. there were people that passed out in the stairwell cuz it's smoked and then burned alive. She LAUGHED and GIGGLED. She was a girl scout. There is something to be said for her being a girl scout at the time, because back then they did teach you how to make fires they did teach you how to use a knife they taught you the dangers of making a fire. She doused, they say she just squirted the futon, she doused it with lighter fluid the entire bottle. This was not an innocent prank. She meant to do damage. She intended to do damage. She intended to set a building on fire. I don't think she intended to kill anybody but like I said earlier you make decisions in life. And she needs to stay in jail for the rest of her life. She has no right to freedom whatsoever. I honestly is morbid this as this sounds, hope and if she goes free somebody murders her within the first week. She honestly does not deserve freedom. What she did is tantamount to those kids who drop bricks off of overpasses and are shocked when someone in a car is killed or horrifically injured. She made a life for herself in jail. She should live it.

A 23 year old woman understands that fires spread. She knowingly risked people's lives to satisfy herself and as a result four people suffocated to death in their own homes. Survivors in the complex also likely experienced years of trauma. No one forced her to choose to gamble with others' lives, and no one forced her to plead guilty to a charge that carried a life sentence. There's no just reason for her to be spared the consequences of her choices.
She should have got the death penalty and I don't usually support death because life in prison is a better punishment. She is a bloody monster!

This. She should have gotten death meaning it wouldn't even be a question whether to grant her parole or not (though granted some people remain on death row for decades before they are *actually* executed). Getting out after 20 years for FOUR murders is a bit of a joke. Her friends involved should definitely have done 10+ years each too, not sure how they didn't even get charged.

I agree. Someone once said that compassion for the criminal is callousness to the victim. Forgiveness doesn't need to accompany early release. I would think this would actually be a bad political move. I think the public needs to hold politicians accountable for not protecting the public from people who cause harm imho.

Telling the victims' families that their her family now is just legit crazy. If she was released I imagine it would be hard to avoid an altercation between her and them. She's safer where she is, and so is everyone else.

Yes, no matter how long ago, if it had been my sister who was a victim, I would be hoping she did get out so some real justice could be served. Also I thought doctor Grande was getting a bit close to victim shaming when he said "if they'd stayed in their flats they wouldn't have died". I don't know about anyone else but to be woken up by fire alarms would panic me so much that I would try to leave the building too. No I think the Doc is way off the mark with this one.

This happened in the area I live. I remember everyone was livid with Janet. Just because it was a "prank" does not mean she should be paroled. Absolutely no excuse for what she did.
It was not a prank. That's just what she says now that she got caught. It was intentional murder of her boyfriend, just the wrong victims. She's calling it a prank to try to downplay it. Crazy that people are falling for her manipulations. She has been doing this and getting away with it her entire life. Problem child became a bigger problem adult.

Remorse can be an ambiguous concept. Savvy criminals who fake remorse or inarticulate criminals who don't know how to show remorse can be a problem for both prosecutors and defenses. Thanks as always, Dr. Grande.
Remorse shouldn't matter in sentencing at all. A crime had been committed and feeling bad about it does not undo the action.

@@kazmiller96 As an ADA, myself as well as most other prosecutors and judges disagree. Remorse, or a lack thereof, can be an insight into the risk of recidivism of a defendant in the future. Not just that, it shows that said regretful person may have learned a hard lesson. For being a country built on Judeo-Christian beliefs, there is an ironic lack of mercy and forgiveness throughout the country sadly.
I’m skeptical. Her adopting causes of her victims seems like a vicarious trophy for her.
It also seems to mock the surviving families, because their loved ones cannot do the things they wanted to do, but she can. This action of hers may or may not be intentional, but probably fuels outrage in the families.

I truly believe that she was trying to honor the victims who died as a result of her crime. She did not "forget" them. The horrible thing about causing the death of a person, accidentally or not, is that there's absolutely nothing you can do to bring them back. These deaths are such a senseless tragedy!

The bottom line is that this woman set that fire INTENTIONALLY because of her ANGER & revenge, to begin with. So, that fire wasn't just an oopsie or a harmless, childish prank & she knew it. Duh! This is why she MUST do her time, whether or not she is remorseful & whether or not she has been forgiven by the family/families or by anyone else.
My brother died in a house fire. I tortured myself thinking of his last moments but the fireman who carried him out spoke to me weeks later and explained he died of smoke inhalation. He said the smoke from a house fire is so toxic you only get one breath. You are gone before you can draw a second. It gave me some comfort knowing he was gone before he could be burnt.
She burned an apartment building down and killed 4 people and watched it burn heard people screaming never called 911.but she's really sorry.
I think the fact that she watched the fire get out of control and did not call for help in anyway. Her late remorse does not change the fact that she started a fire in the middle of the night and succeeded in killing 4 people and did a lot of property damage. Don't do the crime if you cannot do the time. Calling a murder a prank is not taking responsibility for one's actions.

I’ve noticed as a society, some make allowances for people who are clearly unhinged. I have a friend dealing with a HOA problem where one resident has been threatening bodily harm and stating he has a gun if he doesn’t get his way. My friend is like ‘aww he won’t do anything!’ Take this stuff seriously people.

She didn't think it would because stupid. Lots of massive fires have been caused by idiots who didn't intend or understand what they were doing could result in such a thing. Most of those people were not intending on felonies though, which is what separates this woman and how she was convicted of 1st deg murder (x4). Her stupidity also meant she didn't even really "get" her intended victim--sure she burned his stuff but he escaped the fire. The friends definitely should have done time as well; it's crazy to think they weren't even charged. Letting this clown out after 20 years for four murders is just ridiculous too.

Setting a building of people on fire after a breakup is not something a person does because they’re “impulsive”. Dr. Grande said that she had the opportunity to walk away but opted to set a second fire. It seems that she had an intentional disregard for any life in that building. Perhaps she adopted the victims interests and claimed their families as her own because she continues to value her life more than theirs…as if she is an adequate replacement. That’s not remorse nor accountability.
She sounds absolutely crazy and knew exactly what she was doing! I wonder how these people who want her released would feel if it was their family members who died. She needs to stay in prison. She would definitely be a danger to the public if released!

I'm 46 years old and an old childhood friend of mine is in prison. Basically because of alcohol. He made a series of poor choices. Him and three of his friends drove up to the State Park and they were drinking and he littered and a Park Ranger saw him litter. when the park Ranger went over to confront him, they all took off in their car. Two Park Rangers followed them out of the park and was chasing after them. They had been drinking and he was doing about 100 miles an hour when he hit the crest of a hill and went airborne and crashed and killed two of his passengers.. They gave him 25 years in prison for it. That alcohol is real poison

Arson can be tricky in this way. In most cases arsonists probably do not intend to kill people. But the fires that they set do often result in deaths and we all should have a primal understanding that fire does harm. For these reasons arsonists must be held responsible for the predictable results of their actions.
I live in an apartment so i feel that any criminal who burns down and kills innocent people needs life in prison. Arson is a horrible crime. She was an adult and educated.

claiming she should be released is beyond comical. if that's the case no drunk drivers who kill people should be given life sentences. nobody who has shot a bystander accidentally when aiming for someone else should get life sentences, nobody who shoots or stands someone in the leg but the victim dies should be given life sentences because clearly they probably didn't mean for the victims of their crimes to die. if you cause the deaths of four people through malicious actions you should never be freed. and what's also ridiculous is people saying they feel sorry for her, show me someone who caused four people's death from a purposeful action and I'll show you someone you shouldn't feel sorry for standing in the same spot.

Regardless of intent, her sentence was appropriate and it shouldn’t have been commuted. I hope the parole board makes the right choice and keeps her locked up.
I might be wrong and maybe her original sentence was a miscarriage of justice but I can’t personally endorse her being released.
Or at least not until she’s served a lot more time. So far she’s only served 20 years, that’s only 5 years per victim. I don’t know the right amount of time but it’s definitely more than that...

A terrible tragedy! If she had tried to call police instead of running, perhaps some family members might have been more forgiving. The harsh reality of it is quite sobering, and what a needless waste of lives. Wonder what she learned in the Girl Scouts?

Her act was clearly a felony murder. It was correct to treat it that way. If the consequences of the crime do not match what the law says then people cannot be sure what the law really means. Plea bargains might be more humane for the perpetrator and less expensive for the state, but they are are much less humane for future victims who become victims because the existing law is not taken seriously by those who harm them.
Well said. It's terrible how often future victims could have been protected by carrying out the sentences of violent offenders instead of putting them back on the street--sometimes over and over.

My friend's garage was burnt down in fire started by arson, in what was described as an opportunity crime.I can attest to the pain which is produced for victims of arson.
I was able to help my friend rebuild as the insurance permitted him to do it himself because he was a builder.People can start again but they cannot replace the things that were lost.
Governors should not be given the right to commute sentences. A verdict has no validity if a Governor can come along and change the sentence of a criminal that was found guilty by a jury. This woman has served too little time for the horrific deaths she caused with her malicious and revenge seeking behavior. She is a danger to society and I think she will go back to being irresponsible because she seems to be wired that way. She should serve at least another 20 years to discourage her committing more crimes.
What about the construction company and the regulators who approved the building, they are also responsible but get off with no consequences.

Four people and she was in her 20’s . The impulsivity isn’t going to stop is it. ? And she knew it was wrong and made the fire worse. She cannot give back the people she killed. Plus she planned this out before she did it.
She did something pretty sociopathic. Why should she be treated as if it was all a mistake and misunderstanding? Hard to believe she didn't realize that she was putting people in danger. The family members of the young people that died will never be the same. For her to have caused so much suffering, she needs to stay right where she is.

I know this is a very serious story about people who died horribly in a fire. That's probably the worst way to go and I can't believe this woman did this to them. But Dr. Grande's sarcasm made me lol when he said "Nothing says everything is going to be ok like sirens and screaming". He perfectly captured that woman's complete disconnect with reality. Dr. Grande is hilarious in the most unassuming and succinct ways. However I do hope that these people's loved ones find peace with this heinous and despicable act of arson. It's one of the five capital crimes. What was she thinking? Who does that? I hope she gets life without parole for this. Then she can think about it for the next 50 years in a cage. As those people roasted alive and she thought that everything was ok because the fire truck showed up. These kind of people are what's wrong with society. Great video though. I really liked it.

She didn't care if everyone was ok. She just said that after she was caught. Now that she's not living her best life in prison, she wants to change her sentence and is adjusting her remorse and memory. If she had been drunk and killed 4 people, it would be unintentional but negligent. She would get a stiffer sentence. It was intentional, just had the wrong victims. It was NOT negligent. She started the fire on purpose, watched it unfold, and did nothing, probably enjoying it . She had a teenage history of this, and it escalated to causing 4 deaths. If she wants (and thinks that she deserves) freedom and the slate wiped clean, she should get something similar to being deported to China or any other communist or third-world country and have to work like they do for 20 cents a week. Those helpless young victims died horrifying deaths at the hands of this murderer. They will remain in their graves until the end of time. This was a deliberate act of cold-blooded murder and she should remain in prison for the rest of her life. The fact that she sought early release shows clearly how cheaply she regards the lives of those precious young people whom she incinerated in the springtime of their lives. Justice can only be served by the life sentence she was given at the bar of justice.

I'm a Greensboro resident who remembers what a cold and windy night that was in 2002. Under those conditions, anyone who sets a fire on the wooden breezeway of an occupied building in the middle of the night, uses an accelerant and then flees the scene and destroys evidence is not "playing a prank." This was a grown woman, a graduate of UNC-Greensboro. She had to know what a dangerous act this was. Her subsequent actions prove it.
In 2017, in one of his last acts as Governor, Pat McCrory (R) granted clemency to her, making her eligible for parole in 2029. Our current Governor Roy Cooper (D) granted her further clemency in December of 2022, making her eligible for parole on January 1, 2023. Those who were injured escaping the horror of the fire, as well as the families and friends of the deceased, have essentially been double-crossed by two governors.
She should remain exactly where she is.
This not a prank! She even disposed of the evidence? Who trashes lighter fluid and theiir clothes after use, if she was innocent she would have put the lighter fluid back into the storage afteruse, and her clothes in the washer!

The only time a penalty handed down by a judge should be reconsidered is when new events related to the facts of the case is revealed. Once in jail the circumstances of the prisoner are unlikely to change. They should do the time they are ordered to do.

The thing that irritates me even more than the possibility that this woman could be let out of jail soon, is the continued use of the word "prank". Even if the fire never spread, burning someones furniture is not a prank.

Prison is also a place for people who are a danger to others. It's good to hear that she forgave herself, but to believe this person at every turn compounds a biased view. The credibility of a person who commits such crime shouldn't exist.

Dr. Grande mentioned a few times in the video that the apartment code and regulations were up to date and were checked as recently as a month prior to the crime. If it's the thought that counts, then we can all just imagine Janet being free and that should be enough. I think the number of murders matters here. She didn't kill one person, she killed four. Thirty years for each person served consecutively seems fitting.

How the hell did she THINK it would go to light a COMMUNAL APARTMENT BUILDING on fire? She thought it would just stop burning after her exes apartment!? And she was prepared to kill her ex clearly, setting a fire at someone’s home will very likely lead to injury or death. She deserves her sentence. I feel so awful for the victims’ families. Imagine hearing your loved one died in a fire set because someone was mad at their ex. So stupid and disgusting.
