It wasn’t common at the time to stop someone drinking and driving In fact even the cops would usually let you go, and youd be made a social outcast for suggesting it was wrong, because everyone in that restaurant would have driven home that night, many of them also drinking Different times had different social protocols Many harmful things that are socially accepted now will be criticized one day too and people in the future will pretend they’d have said something but in reality, harmful people are rarely confronted by the people around them

My dad was drunk in 1982 and ran his car off the road thru a fence. When the cops got there they asked him if he thought he was good enough to drive home the last 10 miles. Of course he said yes and luckily made it home. I sure miss the good old days. 🤣
Old school country singer Johnny Paycheck wrote a song in the 1970's called "I'm Gonna Drink and Drive That Woman Off Of My Mind"
He said it was a true story where his woman left him & he couldn't stand being alone in the house so ole Johny fills up his pickup, went to the liquor store for booze & got drunk behind the wheel while driving across Tennessee all night long. He said he got pulled over when he hit the other end of the state line, got fined $10 for DUI, which he payed the cop right there & the cop made him pour out his booze & then he let ole Johnny drive all the way back home to the other side of the state! Johnny said he was pissed because that was his last $10 which he planned on buying more booze with so he had to rob the next liquor store so he could keep on drinking & driving that woman off of his mind! Lmao Man those were the good ole days! Yeeehaaaaw!😆😆

the first judge of hers was a good judge letting her out at 21 was the wrong choice , glad now there is that option for life with a chance of parole.

I would not trust Amy anywhere- she is bound to harm others particularly vulnerable individuals.
I feel like she has served her time because why else would she be resentenced? Juveniles can still recieve life without parole in the state of Michigan. I do not agree with sentencing juveniles to life without parole however and when it comes to adults, only for the worst cases of Murder and Rape.
The guy was going to pass out, or fall asleep, and not remember much of anything. All they had to do was wait, drive him down the road, steal his money, and walk home. He probably wouldn't have been able to prove anything. He could have lost the money. Everyone saw him to be very intoxicated.
Her wanting to kill someone and get away with it was a major factor in why he was killed.

Both were equally culpable and both should have received the same penalty. Youn people who commit adult crimes should be treated like adults.
Sooo, they didn't think to just wait till the dude nodded off then take the money and come morn just shrug their shoulders and say "what money?". Guy would either know they were lying but not be able to prove it or assume he was robbed by another or it fell out somewhere while he was off his tree. Not that that's ok either but robbing someone whose that drunk doesn't require murder by any stretch.

This makes her obviously very dangerous person and those "proffesionals" who didn´t see the screaming sociopathy in her should go to work in fast food because they certainly did not get their degree for knowledge.
I think the condition of the victim needs to be considered. Has the victims condition improved since he was murdered? If not (and I doubt he has, murder victims typically find their condition exceedingly hard to recover from) then I think the killer should be considered to have forfeited their life. Especially in the case of 1st degree (planned out) murder.

I really hope all her settlement money went to the victims family. Ironically she knows what it's like to be a victim now .

Yeah, killing him was not only cold blooded but really stupid. I grew up in a rough area and I’m now in the recovery field, I have gotten to know robbers. They say they always hope no one gets hurt…that makes a minor crime into a serious one.
Exactly. They could’ve easily gotten away with robbing him. The fact that they killed him tells me her statement “always wondered what it would be like to kill someone “ was actually an honest one. She should never have been released.

Prison doesn’t rehabilitate. You leave someone in their for decades with other criminals then let them out on the streets with no coping skills or life skills. Instead of getting therapy, they receive more trauma. Especially someone who enters prison before they’ve even entered adulthood. The system is very flawed and negatively impacts society as a whole.
I know but when you are in there, it is often meant to kept you there until your sentence is over

I've felt, for years, that the sort of reaction to horrible crimes is so glaringly different than the way everyone reacted when I was young. I see a person who starved his stepchild to death being described as not a bad person. He just made poor decisions. All this being broadcast on television for all to see. In the past people would have been horrified and sickened. They would never have said someone capable of this was anything other than a murderer and a monster. Children grow up in front of the television. Seeing the, oh well, attitude to debauchery and hideous crimes....what can the outcome be, other than what we're experiencing daily?
Perhaps that's the plot and plan...make debauchery acceptable and don't hold anyone accountable for anything they do

It's not an excuse but surely her youth and the abuse she'd suffered should be some mitigation when punishing her.

Not necessarily but i feel like there should be an age of criminal responsibility (I think it should be at 15) and i am against sentencing people who were under the age of 18 at the time to life without parole. And life without parole should only be imposed for the worst cases of murder and rape and should not be a mandatory penalty unless there are compelling aggravated factors that goes much beyond premeditation, it should be determined by the nature of the offence.
Murdering grammar is one thing, but the real crime in this case is Jeff's mullet.

“Danger can lurk anywhere” is a lesson to learn. But getting shit-faced drunk is equally as significant. After that you are pretty much at the mercy of any bad person that may drift your way.

hey doctor grande could you make a video about the highly suspected murder suicide that happened at Epsom College school, Surrey last sunday 5th february 2023. It involved the headmistress of the school, her husband and her daughter. The shotgun is confirmed to be the husbands and he talked to police weeks before the suspected murder suicide about renewing his shotgun licence. Shocking story and very rare for something like that to happen especially given the circumstances.

I think it’s fair to say Amy should’ve been evaluated for release however in her case it should’ve been denied and what ever compensation the gov decided to give her be instantly awarded to the victims family.

Sixteen year old child, under the influence of addiction and an older partner. Definitely not beyond redemption after a first offence. Tragic for the victim's family but punitive longterm imprisonment of an abused child is not going to help anyone.
It’s not about “helping anyone “, it’s justice for the victim. The victim doesn’t get a second chance.

Amy had an unfortunate childhood but so do countless others who do not grow up to be killers. The psychologists who felt she should be tried as an adult were spot on which is evidenced by her violations in prison. Amy obviously manipulated her BF because she wanted the money. Regarding the victim: I feel really bad for him, he didn't deserve it, but "A fool and his money soon part ways." It reminded me of Modigliani. How he was intoxicated and buying everyone drinks in a bar just before he was beaten and robbed out on the street.
Well said, and I agree with you 100%. Obviously, the defense side wants us to focus on her difficult childhood in order to gain sympathy and a more lenient sentence. But everything you said rings true.

@@Unbreakable245 No, 30 years sentence is not enough to a murder crime. Life in prison or paying for what she did with her life would be enough. 16 years old is not a baby. Only in this country we consider a 16 or 17 years old as babies and we treat them as such, therefore, they act like babies. A 16 years old in other countries are married, have family, and taking care of themselves and their families. Here, we might be still teaching them how to use toilet paper 🧻

The fact she didn't act in Prison appropriately enough to accumulate many infractions makes me question why she was released last August. How will she handle an environment without any formal directions?

I know I could have done something stupid, as a troubled teen, that I could never have been capable of, after about age 20. I had PTSD and would go into fight, flight, or fawn responses but I matured a lot and wasn’t so afraid of the world. Later, working as an advocate of abused youth, a lot of them were under extreme stress, and in turmoil. I don’t know what her situation was…I’m just stating my perspective. Our brains mature a lot, after the age of 16. I think most people who commit serious crimes at that age should be given another chance, unless their history and psychiatric exams show a history of extreme cruelty and lack of empathy. If a person is dangerous, society should be protected. I wish I could be a fly on the wall, when this crime occurred, and see if there was a clear instigator.
I'm not usually for given murders second chances but with circumstances and amount of time served it would be reasonable to grant both co defenders their freedom and agree with yu on the segment where yu discussed the age factors , mirror vs young adult culpability especially if yu consider 3 year difference in age.also I see alot cases give co defenders same charges wen one of them don't have the same intent as the other,if yu think about it at tha point it probably not say safe to refuse to participate further for their owe safety.

She'll be back in prison for a serious re-offense by 2024. There's no way someone who went into prison in 1990 could just hop out into the real world in 2022 & succeed. Too much has changed.
This is such a sad case. I am not trying to find excuses for her behavior, but she certainly had a terrible upbringing. I believe that must have a significant influence on her behavior and motivations.

The defense team in this case would have definitely wanted someone like YOU on the jury! Countless people in this world may have had a very difficult home environment and upbringing as a child. But the overwhelming majority of them still manage to grow up and lead productive, and “normal” lives. Only a very tiny percentage wind up as cold blooded murderers. In light of the horrific crime that she committed…coupled with her reckless and unruly behavior in prison…she should not have been released from prison.
I agree...I felt sorry for this little gal as well. As a teacher, I see this all too many times today...emotionally absent parenting from mothers. So tragic!
@@vcliburn I agree with Rejane. A person's upbringing absolutely influences the direction of their life and the choices they make. Acknowledging this says nothing about the sentence she should or shouldn't have received - it's just stating a fact.
Yes, it may be a “fact”…but it’s also a GIVEN…no matter who you are! My point is that the defense wants the jury to FOCUS on this in order to gain sympathy…and hopefully a more lenient sentence, a/k/a “mitigation”. Whether you intend to or not, once you start going down that rabbit hole you inevitably wind up “feeling sorry” for the defendant, which is exactly what the defense is looking for!
@@vcliburn The woman is entitled to a fair trial, just like everyone. In any trial and sentencing, all factors need to be taken into consideration, including, in this case, whether and to what extent her upbringing influenced her actions. Clearly it did and it needs to be looked at. No doubt this was a horrible case - no arguments from me there - and clearly there's a need for punishment, but you shouldn't let emotions get in the way of justice.

Prison pastors evaluate most prisoners in a very positive light. They say the prisoner has changed and now believe in God. To make it more effective they say “I will trust this person to babysit my kids”.

It would be nice if Dr. Grande could analyze "Suzane Von Richthofen" case. She is a Brazilian and was in jail for planning beforehand the killing both of her biological parents in order to get the family inheritance. She is often described by the media as a Psychopath. Crime happened in 2002. She was in jail since 2006 and was released few days ago for "good behavior" in prison.
