The Most Expensive Engine I've EVER Bought! Supercharged Small Block Chevy!! Will It Run?!?

  • I recently found what I thought was a pretty good deal on a 1941 Chevrolet coupe with a low mile Supercharged engine in it and an upgraded chassis. Now I've wanted an engine with a blower on it for quite sometime so I had to check it out for the drivetrain alone. After sitting for many years can we get this engine to run once more? Or did I buy a boat anchor? Lets find out! The car has been sold! The engine is not for sale at this time. As always, thanks for watching!

    Well thats the classic ring gap issue. Whoever built that motor did not gap the rings for that blower. So looks like that cyl was lean and it butted the ring gap which in turn broke the pistion. Plus make sure you have forged piston.

    • @donwoods7305
      @donwoods7305 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      I agree, since there was no aluminum sparkles on the plug or in the chamber. You will need to pull the other 7 pistons to check ring gap or you may do this again on another piston. Hyper pistons are all wrong for a 6 71 they need to be forged. Also as best as I could tell from the vid your crankshaft looks like it is cast, not good for a 6 71. The engine would be good for a D D Speed Shop "baby blower". I feel your pain on this purchase, this happens to me on occasion.

    • @istoptofly
      @istoptofly 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      Yep, and I bet the rest would eventually do the same thing. There's nothing good about this engine build - hypereutectic pistons, no-name rockers, cast crank (probably not even balanced), rings not gapped. And the blower damage is probably from the ring/piston material going up the intake port. This engine is going to do the same thing again, or worse, if he just puts it back together.

    That is how street style blower motors were build back in the day. We used to build them at 7.5 to 8.5.1 compression with forged pistons and open chambered heads. They were good street rod engines and most of the ones we built used a B&M blower cam. Thankfully we have wide band 02 sensors nowadays to help with the tuning. Good luck.

    Keith Black Hypereutectic Pistons from my days in building engines were added insurance in performance engines over cast pistons without going to the expense of buying forged components. At the time most forged pistons gave off a slap when cold starting that worried people used to cast pistons. In steps KB with their Hypereutectic pistons and he was a success. People running power adders still run forged components. My understanding is that the piston failure you showed on your video looks like the compression ring didn’t have enough gap. Just to give yourself piece of mind, check the ring gap on the old rings before installing new KB pistons. If the gap is right for power adders I would think twice before running another set of the same pistons. I would think twice before running Hypereutectic pistons under a blower anyway…but I won’t tell anyone if you don’t. I still like your show.
    Andy.

    Someone didn’t gap those rings for boost! It sucks but I’ve honestly slapped a new piston in a rig and gapped new rings after that happened and it was perfectly fine afterwards. I would highly recommend pulling all pistons and gapping the rings because if one piston popped from butted rings, another one may not be far behind!

    Please DO NOT reuse those pistons!!!!!!! Hypereutectic pistons are not recommended for blower applications. They have a lot of silicon in them and are brittle. They are very prone to cracking with detonation. Do a little research first. Ring gap is also very important with boost. I would hate to see you having to rebuild this engine again. A good set of forged pistons is the way to go.

  • @tiredofit1235

    Supposedly for high horsepower applications. You want the middle compression ring have slightly more gap then the top ring. Helps combustion gas leave that area of the piston

    Check the ring gap on all pistons. I have plugged the bypass for the oil filter. That bypass opens more than just when the filter is plugged. I had it plugged to prevent it from ever opening and letting any metal in the pan into the engine.

    I know many people have mentioned ring gaps, which is an obvious failure point for jerking that ring land off the piston. However, if those pistons are hypereutectic and are swelling in the cylinder under heat, it can cause the same issue so I would check to make sure those pistons are forged if they are not, I would replace all eight. hypereutectic pistons in a blower motor or junk. In addition, those roller rockers you have look like Harland Sharp roller rockers, and they have a roller bearing fulcrum as well as the roller and are pretty good rocker arms. You had that push rod issue you might want to look into getting a set of hardened pushrods. And whatever you do, don’t skimp on anything when putting that motor back together. I would also check to make sure you have some decent rods and rod bolts. That’s just my two. Cents.

    • @seanmiller6585
      @seanmiller6585 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Those Keith Black hypereutectic piston swell up pretty bad in the cylinders when they get warm. I had a 400 small block that did the same thing without a blower. It got warm and just pulled the top ring groove right off the piston, even though the rings were gapped.

    ETA: Well I was at least wrong about the 2 bolt mains. That's a good thing.
    Your KB pistons are Keith Black. They are probably hyperutectic pistons. I ran a set in a Hilborn injected 377 sbc with 13.2:1,

    I don't know details but a local blower hero used to set them up for people. He showed me a little about blowers but not enough to know anything. As I remember you could shim the worms to adjust the clearance. That would increase or decrease the air pressure into the carb(s). That's all I came away with. That and he had an awesome blown 59 Vette. Very fast car.

      ~75% of the second rings job, if not more, is secondary oil control after the oil ring pack. It is in no way, shape, or form a compression ring. Ever. There are plenty of pistons that have been made through the years, namely early stroker stuff bike and car, that had NO second ring, just a top and oil - and neither consumed excessive oil nor bled compression.

    i didn't see a comment on the oil bypass being plugged, sorry to add again if someone did already. the bypass was there for cold starting when the oil was thick or the filter plugged up to ensure that the engine continued to get oil. the problem with the high pressure and volume of the high performance stuff is that you were always bypassing oil around the filter so if something started to go south the filter would only be getting part of it. I believe the stock bypass spring was somewhere around 30psi. we used to always pop it out and tap it for a 1/8 pipe plug, that's the first time I've seen a screw in there. hope that makes sense. enjoying your stuff as always.

    Well I have myself bought three rebuilt gm motors and one rebuilt 3.8 Buick 84 231 v6 2bbl dual jet carburetor... A 83 chevy Camaro z28 305 h.o. sbc and the factory motor had 450 casting heads on it and a gm performance crate motor 200hp 350 truck cam, so that was a low mileage rebuilt h.o. that was a waste of $450, and the gm target Napa crate motor 86-88 truck 4 bolt main forged crankshaft 350 and the factory zz4 camshaft upgrade... was in the 86 chevy k20 custom deluxe truck when I traded around for it and I paid $375 for the motor, and it was supposed to have quit running from a stretched timing chain, and then burned up the ignition module trying to get it started....bullls!!!! T the Forged crankshaft 1,3,67, and 8 were spun on the crankshaft and scored it severely, and the cam gear on the distributor was split in two and laying in the bottom of the oil pan, and the heads i pulled off of it were 882 big valve truck heads, and the camshaft was all scarred up so yeah the three components i wanted out of that motor the camshaft upgrade the cylinder head i was hoping for the newer version 993-991 instead of 882 basically the same thing just not a light weight casting, and the forged crankshaft was no good for me the heads had 2 messed up valves in the Dr side and 4 messed up valves in the passenger side and two bent valves

    Trying to cheat standard carbs to make them work and just pulling static timing kills the drivability.

    Back in the day 1980’s we ran a class of dirt track racing that was limited to 241.6 cu in (basically a over bored flat head v8). So all sorts of combinations were tried. A common one was a 245 cuin Aussie Chrysler in line 6 cylinder. To get it below the 241.6 cuin we used to use holden 6 cylinder pistons on cylinder 1 & 6. And sleeved the cylinder to the smaller size. Amazingly enough the engine ran fine. Albeit as balanced as it could be . Another option was to use a 253 v8 Aussie Holden engine and destroke the crank and just use longer compression height pistons.
    There also was a Aussie holden 6 cylinder block that ran a ford falcon crank. So instead of 202 cuin the ford crank brought it out to about 235 cubic inches.

    A good hack I use for draining oil from an engine on a stand is to modify a milk crate (or plastic tub) so it can go upside down on the floor - over the stand beam - under the engine, giving you a flat surface to put an oil drain pan. Just cut slots in the crate so it drops over the top of the beam that attaches the front wheels to the rest of the stand. As always, love your work and best regards to all!

    I've found as time has gone by, that many of these supposed ' experts ' or ' best in their class ' folks aren't always half as good as they are cracked up to be. To be honest Mortske, you're a good mechanical engineer, and you can build the best and be the best. This video is great for educational purposes and you don't sugarcoat over everything - folks can learn a lot from guys like yourself and Mojo.

    Put it in the 56. Did the seller know? Bet he did... Considering all the other "go fast" stuff in that engine and it being a 4 bolt main, you are still ahead of the game IMO.. The nicks in the blower are not ideal, but I'll bet you'll not be able to notice any difference?? what's it gonna make, 10-12 psi anyway?
    Anyway, good job and getting some $$ back on selling the chassis and stuff pretty quick is another 'win', so sounds like a good plan and looking forward to the progress of this project. Keep on keeping on!

    You have about $5000-$6000 worth of small block blower there. Looks like some balancing on the crank, and you may want to check the stroke, it may be a 383. 350 with a 400 crank. Keith Black hyper eutectic pistons are bad about swelling in the cylinder when at temp, and pushing the ring against the cylinder wall and breaking the the top ring lan off the piston. I had a 400 small block do the same thing even though the rings were definitely gapped correctly. I wouldn’t use them at all, buy some forged units or it will probably happen again.

    I put together my small block 350 with a weiand 6-71 learned a lot from a 82 yr old ex- drag racer maintaining this combination isn’t expensive if you do your own work, to me the critical points are timing I had someone I trust to correctly boost reference my carburetors I use msd pro billet distributor with mechanical advance 16 initial 32 full advance by 2100 so it’s streetable with a digital 6 AL box and 10lbs of boost. This is what works for me.

    Man, that sucks. Sorry this happened. I had kind of similar thing happen. I bought an 05 Yukon from a guy locally off of FB marketplace. I am a disabled Army vet and he was supposed to be a veteran also. The whole time I was picking up the truck he talked about the military and motorcycles. I couldn't shake that the guy seemed off but I ignored my gut, checked out the vehicle and gave him cash. On the way home the brake lines blew. Then after I got it back and did an oil change, sludge came out of the pan before the oil came out. The filter was stuffed full of sludge. Pulled the valve covers and it was the blackest mess I have ever seen. It had brand new oil in it. He knew what he was doing. I learned a valuable lesson. Always bring a scope and look everything over.

    What I remember about the MSD is that it needs 9 volts, a ballast resistor like a GM points ignition, 12 volts will burn up the module It'll be toast. lol really look the voltage requirements over, Mr. Mortske. I know you're disappointed but if it would've pitched a rod you'd have got taken. Just one piston, not bad at all. You know you can't trust a blower or turbo engine out of the box. Too much heat and pressure so you needed to look it over, examine the bottom end. You want something reliable, not just powerful. Man, I can't wait to hear it run!

    What cam is in it?
    I would Check ring gap on all 8 pistons. Supercharged engines should have Forged pistons.
    I recommend getting rid of the 441 smog heads, compression is to low 7:8:1 or lower.
    Also doesn't flow very well....
    I recommend AFR enforcer heads, they are good budget head.
    I don't think you would be happy with dyno numbers.
    NO WAY 650 HP. More like 400 hp.

    No no no! Don't waste you money on KB Hyper pistons in a blown app. Spend more money on good forged pistons preferable with 1/16" rings. The KB's are OK for normally asperated set-ups when the rings are properly gapped.

    Blocking the oil filter bypass was pretty common back in the day, the stock ones used to bypass too much oil with higher volume/psi pump, You will just need to get a K&N filter that has an internal bypass.
    KB hypereutectic pistons are not very good for boosted applications, they were meant for NA applications, I would always go with a forged piston instead, they will still work if you keep the boost low , good luck, really enjoy the channel!

    Look like Harland Sharp roller rockers. If you plan on high RPMs I'd recommend rocker stud girdles. Timing was probably off and probably too low of octane suffered from detonation killing the pistons, and or it wasn't gapped for a super charger and the rings grew too much and stuck. I'm guessing the guy just threw on the blower on an existing engine. Bad plan.

      Oh yeah the pistons and rods don't look like blower quality. I would suggest a better rod and piston for it. Probably look up CP Carrillo so you don't have the same issues. I'm betting it was a crate motor someone slapped the blower on. Don't do the same thing.

    That could be an epic build.
