The Most Expensive Engine I've EVER Bought! Supercharged Small Block Chevy!! Will It Run?!?

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 13 ต.ค. 2024
- I recently found what I thought was a pretty good deal on a 1941 Chevrolet coupe with a low mile Supercharged engine in it and an upgraded chassis. Now I've wanted an engine with a blower on it for quite sometime so I had to check it out for the drivetrain alone. After sitting for many years can we get this engine to run once more? Or did I buy a boat anchor? Lets find out! The car has been sold! The engine is not for sale at this time. As always, thanks for watching!

oh look another rich TH-camr with more money than sense.....lol
Yeah duff dog is getting pretty boujee
Oh look, you get to see generational hard work in action. I'll never understand people like yourself taking the piss on someones work ethic and act like it means nothing. Is it jealousy? Probably.
Oh look, another jealous college grad flipping burgers.
@@IronArmPandaMost likely is jealousy.
Get a life. Like everything is perfect in your life.
Well thats the classic ring gap issue. Whoever built that motor did not gap the rings for that blower. So looks like that cyl was lean and it butted the ring gap which in turn broke the pistion. Plus make sure you have forged piston.
I agree, since there was no aluminum sparkles on the plug or in the chamber. You will need to pull the other 7 pistons to check ring gap or you may do this again on another piston. Hyper pistons are all wrong for a 6 71 they need to be forged. Also as best as I could tell from the vid your crankshaft looks like it is cast, not good for a 6 71. The engine would be good for a D D Speed Shop "baby blower". I feel your pain on this purchase, this happens to me on occasion.
Yep, and I bet the rest would eventually do the same thing. There's nothing good about this engine build - hypereutectic pistons, no-name rockers, cast crank (probably not even balanced), rings not gapped. And the blower damage is probably from the ring/piston material going up the intake port. This engine is going to do the same thing again, or worse, if he just puts it back together.
Thanks for the info!
Get 1 piece hardened pushrods too.
agreed
Don’t beat yourself up over the dinged engine. You still came out good and now you have a blower !! 🎉🎉
Can’t wait to hear it run
The last time I saw a piston break like that ,,, the rings were not gapped properly . Love the old roadster .
Thanks man .
Hyper pistons I installed 2 sets need a wide piston gap or that damage,
I agree with all the other comments, someone put this engine together without checking ring gap clearance. But with Mojo experience and Duff's moral support I sure you will get right..... 🤔 Since it has tri five headers on it are you and Dan going to do a video together ???
My brother-in-law offered me a piece of cake once. He went on and on about the flavor and texture. Talked about the icing and the recipe and the baking process. When he was done I said “Hell yes, I want cake!” He said “Too bad it’s all gone”. This story came to mind after watching you tell me all about the car that was already sold! Love ya Mortske! Yer one of a kind!
my bad
that’s funny
That is how street style blower motors were build back in the day. We used to build them at 7.5 to 8.5.1 compression with forged pistons and open chambered heads. They were good street rod engines and most of the ones we built used a B&M blower cam. Thankfully we have wide band 02 sensors nowadays to help with the tuning. Good luck.
56 is definitely a good candidate for that motor and a 4 speed . Then you could get a shirt made RAT FINK style with a big ole shifter with duff driving!!
My first thought was why all the loose fittings? Did seller discover problem and throw everything together to just to sell. Appreciate how you handled issue and turned it into teachable moment.
I presume it just was never finished.
Right on! Love it! You go Mortske! I’m a fellow gearhead and love the vids and yer accent as my fam are original Nort Dakota homesteaders, north east corner at the canadadian border towns Maida and Hannah where the family fams are, they live in Langdon now, maybe you heard of the towns eh? We moved oat to Seattle when I was 2yo so I’m a city boy but went back every summer as a kid and had great times!
Just saw Puddins build and nothing would look better than that blower motor in the front of that car, just ask Duff JMO!
Hey Mortske 👋 , excellent shipping time on my order. Thanks for the great service 👍. Thanks for the video. It's fun when your shopping marketplace. Have a great week ahead 👍
Thanks for your purchase!
Give Dan a call he’d buy those headers from for you in a heartbeat, I can’t wait to see you and Duff ripping up the streets with that motor in the 56 Chevy . Cheers 🇨🇦
So happy that you have gotten this and can't wait to see you slowly get it put together and finished.
Motskie mini screwdriver might be my best purchase ever. I use it for everything!
Handier than a shirt with pockets!
Right, and someday they might be back in stock?!! I'll keep checking (don't want the red one, I'm gonna be picky) and a pile of stickers, maybe a banner. I got all this empty shop wall space, you see...didn't lose my shop yet.
Thanks for sharing the $$ part, it’s an often overlooked part of these kind of projects. 8k for a fresh blown motor, that you know is good, sounds good!
Hello Mort, be my guess when the engine was built they didn't check the ring gap. I also think it would be really cool to put it in the 56 Chev. Best of luck to you and take care. 👍
I'd say buddy got a super deal for that rolling chassis at $3000
Sorry for your luck on the piston chip but like you said you'll know what you have now and learn things. Always fun hanging out..
Keith Black Hypereutectic Pistons from my days in building engines were added insurance in performance engines over cast pistons without going to the expense of buying forged components. At the time most forged pistons gave off a slap when cold starting that worried people used to cast pistons. In steps KB with their Hypereutectic pistons and he was a success. People running power adders still run forged components. My understanding is that the piston failure you showed on your video looks like the compression ring didn’t have enough gap. Just to give yourself piece of mind, check the ring gap on the old rings before installing new KB pistons. If the gap is right for power adders I would think twice before running another set of the same pistons. I would think twice before running Hypereutectic pistons under a blower anyway…but I won’t tell anyone if you don’t. I still like your show.
Andy.
You did ok .I had a good time learned something new every Monday. Have a good week
"Ran 150 miles or so. . ." 1/4 miles at a time. Really nice collection of interesting parts. Agree that that particular front end setup wouldn't suit a fenderless rod. Probably handles well.
I greatly appreciate Mortske minutes, trivia, and asides. Enough of those, and we'll collectively be Mojo.
Thanks for the feedback
My Nova's handled like garbage!
Ah that's a bugga dude.cant wait to see more in this. I like the blown budget remark haha 😅
Remmber learning knowledge is priceless
Welp Mortske, I have to say my heart fell when you saw that piston.
The 56 sounds right for the swap.
Also, if there's any redemption, as much loose as you found, you needed to tear it down anyway to check it first.
Good afternoon from Cape Cod 🦈 I saw that motor and figured this is going to be interesting. I didn't expect a broken piston nor did you obviously. Dam that's a shame but you seem to be enthusiastic about it, that's all that matters. The 56 gasoline idea sounds pretty good to me. Keep up the great work and the excellent content 👍✌️🇺🇲
The 61 bubble top Bel Air needs that blower.
I'll second that!
As usual, another good one Mr. Mortske! Stinks that that motor wasn't exactly as advertised. But, I bet it'll eventually get turned into something good.
DD speedshop is always given good motors that turn out to be junk. I watched his video where he replaced one piston , hand honed the cylinder and put it back together. Turned out to be the best cylinder in the motor. Moral of the story ......It can be done.
I bought a NEW plastic divider/screw (whatever) box to sort my lifters into.
Mark the top with a Sharpie, snap the lid shut and they're clean and sorted when you slap 'er back together.
Please DO NOT reuse those pistons!!!!!!! Hypereutectic pistons are not recommended for blower applications. They have a lot of silicon in them and are brittle. They are very prone to cracking with detonation. Do a little research first. Ring gap is also very important with boost. I would hate to see you having to rebuild this engine again. A good set of forged pistons is the way to go.
I can absolutely appreciate your desire to presume people are good. I sure hope they didn't try to take you for a ride, with that engine. Feels better to think they didn't. Good job.
I know you're in a hurry...BUT, I'd stick that piston in a Priority Mail envelope, with a note, e-mail address and cell # and send it back to Keith Black.
Listening to you whinge about all the shit you hate always makes me smile.
Love yer work, Mortske. Keep on wrenching.
As soon as heard 'fastest black guy in the 60s' I woulda noped out. knew right then it was gonna end badly cuz the seller was too much of a story teller. those types are always selling snake oil with sawdust in rearends or poorly ringed blown motors. sorry u got got Mortsky
That engine has some good parts in it... Good luck with it anyway. I want a bobble head Duff for my dash🤣
I swear there's less talking in a zoom call with a woman's support group
Check the ring gap on all pistons. I have plugged the bypass for the oil filter. That bypass opens more than just when the filter is plugged. I had it plugged to prevent it from ever opening and letting any metal in the pan into the engine.
Good on you for showing the warts and all reality of buying on the marketplace. A lesser man wouldn’t put this out for everyone to see so I admire your integrity. Hopefully this all works out well in the end.
Real life TV!
Supposedly for high horsepower applications. You want the middle compression ring have slightly more gap then the top ring. Helps combustion gas leave that area of the piston
Someone didn’t gap those rings for boost! It sucks but I’ve honestly slapped a new piston in a rig and gapped new rings after that happened and it was perfectly fine afterwards. I would highly recommend pulling all pistons and gapping the rings because if one piston popped from butted rings, another one may not be far behind!
Need the fenders and grille, possibly the hood sides for looks😊. But it's up to the man that wanted the car and I congratulate you. My boss always said, "I would not buy a motor home and trailer, just get a real deal tent and the stuff for severe weather camping and get a supercharger for the car and drive it back and forth to the drags or the car show/cruises." ! I have been slowly getting everything together for the day to get it put together.
Brilliant!
Put it in a boat and chain it to the boat as an anchor.
Shop and property builds and upgrades are awesome. We all are car or offroad people and we all dream of shops and barns to fill with toys 😊
Hi Mortzke and the gang , Pretty sure that chunk out of that piston would still be in there or messed the valves up a lot but the fact that the bad plug was still in shows he wasn't hiding it and maybe was gonna try to run it that way, he new
My hat's off to you. Taking the high road. It will all come out better when you finish, the motor. Thanks for the video. Looking forward to seeing the finished motor.
Fingers crossed!
Top ring is compression bottom ring is the oil ring middle is the helper for the top ring if it wears it helps with compression and help the bottom ring oils if it misses some the first time around keep it up buddy always a good watch
~75% of the second rings job, if not more, is secondary oil control after the oil ring pack. It is in no way, shape, or form a compression ring. Ever. There are plenty of pistons that have been made through the years, namely early stroker stuff bike and car, that had NO second ring, just a top and oil - and neither consumed excessive oil nor bled compression.
Excellent video Mortske :) , Duff Dog 🐕, also look forward see motor how works when get fully ready start up on future projects videos to !
I'm with you .. I don't think ol,boy knew. Just by the way he was building car around that power plant. Good luck my friend. Hope to see the finished project soon... 56 gasser!!
I’m going to agree with a ring gap issue. KB stands for Keith Black pistons are usually hyperutective aka high silicone cast. I wouldn’t run them with boost.
I don't know details but a local blower hero used to set them up for people. He showed me a little about blowers but not enough to know anything. As I remember you could shim the worms to adjust the clearance. That would increase or decrease the air pressure into the carb(s). That's all I came away with. That and he had an awesome blown 59 Vette. Very fast car.
Thanks for sharing!
Good job, Mortske! I knew you’d find a pony in there somewhere.
Hmmm. Tri five Chevy fenderwell headers? Do I see a collaboration with DD Speed Shop coming? Maybe Dan could hack together a 4 to 2 door conversion, or maybe the other way around? Looking forward to this!
Not a chance!
From past experience I'll only run carburetors with referenced power valves and a msd btm.
Trying to cheat standard carbs to make them work and just pulling static timing kills the drivability.
That's WAYYYY beyond a damn it moment.... I could be wrong but I have a funny feeling he knew there was a problem
with the engine. I absolutely despise people that knowingly screw people over...
You may not get your money back but I think it warrants a chat with the seller. I'd like to see his reaction when you show him
the piston.
Hi ya, the clip you showed at the beginning of this video was actually of an Australian 1971 LC Holden Torana GTR with what looked like a motor out of the Titanic. The Torana GTR originally came out with a red motor 3300cc six cylinder running triple side draught Steinberg's. I owned a 1973 LJ Torana back in the day and they were great little cars until a power pole jumped out into the road in front of you.
I wonder if the ring gap was to tight.. I think blown applications u open the gap up.. it would probably be worth the effort to maybe check the ring gap on the bad cylinder n if it appears that it was gapped to small then gap the new set n 7 others.. love ya.. keep on keeping on Buddy 😁
Great video Mr. Mortske. Happy you are buying from the wish list. 😊
Just hope you put a good drone on your list, lolol . Want to see you harassing Pookey 😅
I've found as time has gone by, that many of these supposed ' experts ' or ' best in their class ' folks aren't always half as good as they are cracked up to be. To be honest Mortske, you're a good mechanical engineer, and you can build the best and be the best. This video is great for educational purposes and you don't sugarcoat over everything - folks can learn a lot from guys like yourself and Mojo.
Glad you think so!
Sweet hot rod. The Duff bed is cool. Keeps him off that nasty concrete. Blue Glue!!! Damn, the builder used a few tubes, lol.
It wouldn't surprise me if you find it has a cast crank, 2 bolt mains , and it wasn't balanced., but hopefully I'm wrong...
ETA: Well I was at least wrong about the 2 bolt mains. That's a good thing.
Your KB pistons are Keith Black. They are probably hyperutectic pistons. I ran a set in a Hilborn injected 377 sbc with 13.2:1,
in a winged sprint car and they held up fine.
I know many people have mentioned ring gaps, which is an obvious failure point for jerking that ring land off the piston. However, if those pistons are hypereutectic and are swelling in the cylinder under heat, it can cause the same issue so I would check to make sure those pistons are forged if they are not, I would replace all eight. hypereutectic pistons in a blower motor or junk. In addition, those roller rockers you have look like Harland Sharp roller rockers, and they have a roller bearing fulcrum as well as the roller and are pretty good rocker arms. You had that push rod issue you might want to look into getting a set of hardened pushrods. And whatever you do, don’t skimp on anything when putting that motor back together. I would also check to make sure you have some decent rods and rod bolts. That’s just my two. Cents.
Those Keith Black hypereutectic piston swell up pretty bad in the cylinders when they get warm. I had a 400 small block that did the same thing without a blower. It got warm and just pulled the top ring groove right off the piston, even though the rings were gapped.
Mr. Mortske... bad lucky? not!!! all good lucky... thanks for the show... is very good.
i didn't see a comment on the oil bypass being plugged, sorry to add again if someone did already. the bypass was there for cold starting when the oil was thick or the filter plugged up to ensure that the engine continued to get oil. the problem with the high pressure and volume of the high performance stuff is that you were always bypassing oil around the filter so if something started to go south the filter would only be getting part of it. I believe the stock bypass spring was somewhere around 30psi. we used to always pop it out and tap it for a 1/8 pipe plug, that's the first time I've seen a screw in there. hope that makes sense. enjoying your stuff as always.
The screwdriver came in pretty handy today. The magnet snagged those dropped screws like a boss.
Dang right!
Hello Mortske Duff Chin & MoJo. Lots of talk and suggestions about ring gap. That may be correct. Certainly worth checking. With the broken tooth on the flex plate my 2 cents says sever backfire possibly using either to fire it up. It would be nice to know. That is ancient history now. You have a complete set of new pistons. I would wonder at you just using 1. I would have thought you could have bought just 1. You will get a grin from ear to ear when you get the unit in something you can actually drive. I am looking forward to seeing you & Duff take the test ride.
I bet the guy you bougt that motor from has his own screwdrivers too !
One would hope
Mortske was lucky he found the problem before it damaged the engine irreparably. Now he (and we) will know exactly how it was put together and head off future problems. Hope to see a follow-up video. Informative comments by viewers here.
Will do
Put it in the 56. Did the seller know? Bet he did... Considering all the other "go fast" stuff in that engine and it being a 4 bolt main, you are still ahead of the game IMO.. The nicks in the blower are not ideal, but I'll bet you'll not be able to notice any difference?? what's it gonna make, 10-12 psi anyway?
Anyway, good job and getting some $$ back on selling the chassis and stuff pretty quick is another 'win', so sounds like a good plan and looking forward to the progress of this project. Keep on keeping on!
The spark plug came out and it was tapped. The high compressor can make the ground electrode to bend and combustion explode forces the ground to bend toward to positive electrode. Use colder spark plug to stay stiff in the negative ground tip of spark plug. Thanks.
You said it was a blown engine! Stuff happens. I appreciate the Mortske moment.
Even i dont use expanding foam.....anymore....unusually
Purely aesthetic, not structural.
Back in the day 1980’s we ran a class of dirt track racing that was limited to 241.6 cu in (basically a over bored flat head v8). So all sorts of combinations were tried. A common one was a 245 cuin Aussie Chrysler in line 6 cylinder. To get it below the 241.6 cuin we used to use holden 6 cylinder pistons on cylinder 1 & 6. And sleeved the cylinder to the smaller size. Amazingly enough the engine ran fine. Albeit as balanced as it could be . Another option was to use a 253 v8 Aussie Holden engine and destroke the crank and just use longer compression height pistons.
There also was a Aussie holden 6 cylinder block that ran a ford falcon crank. So instead of 202 cuin the ford crank brought it out to about 235 cubic inches.
Thanks for sharing!
Oh hell yeah... Is that a Duff bobble head sitting on the bench ? I gotta have one of those. 😎
When you said at the beginning of the video that you were keeping the engine and selling the car,
the first thing that popped into my head was, it would be really cool if you put it in the 56 with
a manual trans
You have the skills between you both
Look forward to the follow up video
Blower surge is hard to beat! Can’t wait to hear it run!
Keep up the good work 👌🏼
Will do!
Nothing like the blower surge of a street rod. Love the sound. p.s. Do you and DD Speed Shop have a REAL feud going on?
Another great video! Unfortunately we learn at your expense. Keep the videos coming have a great week.
Bummer Mortske! You'll get it together and going down the road. I have complete confidence in you. 😊
I hope so!
Cool video. Building my first blower car.
The sparkplug box filling the hole on those carbs , is where the linkage went through that hooked to the butterfly for the choke
Correct
I put together my small block 350 with a weiand 6-71 learned a lot from a 82 yr old ex- drag racer maintaining this combination isn’t expensive if you do your own work, to me the critical points are timing I had someone I trust to correctly boost reference my carburetors I use msd pro billet distributor with mechanical advance 16 initial 32 full advance by 2100 so it’s streetable with a digital 6 AL box and 10lbs of boost. This is what works for me.
Thanks for the info
Always enjoy the Mortske minutes 👍
Glad to hear it!
Excited to see what it goes in once all fixed up.. Should be a very cool video😀
Thanks again for the honest great content 👍
our pleasure!
A good hack I use for draining oil from an engine on a stand is to modify a milk crate (or plastic tub) so it can go upside down on the floor - over the stand beam - under the engine, giving you a flat surface to put an oil drain pan. Just cut slots in the crate so it drops over the top of the beam that attaches the front wheels to the rest of the stand. As always, love your work and best regards to all!
Thanks for sharing!
So many jealous people out there brother, In my book your the Man!! Love the content. Always. You an duff dog are killing it.
Totally agree with your rant about that braided fuel line with very low pressure, and that's coming from someone who was manufacturing braided hose with Parker Hannifin for 15 years. So I got heaps of blood loss from dealing with that stuff but it was a good job.
Ouch
1:09:00 should be a Morski shirt: A list of car things to hate, by Mortski. LOL
By the sound of it, it would have to be XXXL just to get all his pet hates on it.
I'm just going to say sorry about your loss
Easy to say something clever but I'd wager we have ALL been there.
Thanks for another great Mortske Monday! Thanks Chin! 🐾🍺
Our pleasure!
Great video! We all get taken at some point but this was not that bad. Be fun to watch you rebuild it.
Well I have myself bought three rebuilt gm motors and one rebuilt 3.8 Buick 84 231 v6 2bbl dual jet carburetor... A 83 chevy Camaro z28 305 h.o. sbc and the factory motor had 450 casting heads on it and a gm performance crate motor 200hp 350 truck cam, so that was a low mileage rebuilt h.o. that was a waste of $450, and the gm target Napa crate motor 86-88 truck 4 bolt main forged crankshaft 350 and the factory zz4 camshaft upgrade... was in the 86 chevy k20 custom deluxe truck when I traded around for it and I paid $375 for the motor, and it was supposed to have quit running from a stretched timing chain, and then burned up the ignition module trying to get it started....bullls!!!! T the Forged crankshaft 1,3,67, and 8 were spun on the crankshaft and scored it severely, and the cam gear on the distributor was split in two and laying in the bottom of the oil pan, and the heads i pulled off of it were 882 big valve truck heads, and the camshaft was all scarred up so yeah the three components i wanted out of that motor the camshaft upgrade the cylinder head i was hoping for the newer version 993-991 instead of 882 basically the same thing just not a light weight casting, and the forged crankshaft was no good for me the heads had 2 messed up valves in the Dr side and 4 messed up valves in the passenger side and two bent valves
Thanks for sharing!
39:43 that's for catching boulders, 2x4s, and the license plate of the guy you're about to pass
If it was me I kinda like the idea of knowing exactly what I have ,now you do anyway you don't have to wonder when running the engine sorta gives ya Lil peace of mind 💯 ✌️looking forward to seeing what it goes in..
I think your right that he didn't know..... but it does suck. At this point, might as well pull them all and look at rings/gaps, bearings, Yada Yada.
Damn---🤔 But you can fix that mess Mortske! I cant wait to hear it blowin rumble..😎
I bought a junkyard 305 once. I wanted to use my reworked l69 heads . When I removed the factory heads, I could see the rings from the top of the Pistons on a few cylinders. I blamed detonation on that. I took the engine back and they gave me another one
Right on
I always enjoy your content. So much great information you put forth. 👍🏻
glad to hear it!
You have about $5000-$6000 worth of small block blower there. Looks like some balancing on the crank, and you may want to check the stroke, it may be a 383. 350 with a 400 crank. Keith Black hyper eutectic pistons are bad about swelling in the cylinder when at temp, and pushing the ring against the cylinder wall and breaking the the top ring lan off the piston. I had a 400 small block do the same thing even though the rings were definitely gapped correctly. I wouldn’t use them at all, buy some forged units or it will probably happen again.
What i think happend is they had a bunch of parts that where bad or damged laying around that they wouldnt be able to sell so they through them together bateing someone to buy it thinking they where gunna get a good deal. The only mistake i seen you make was trusting them. Lesson learned . I enjoyed the video, though, and learned to alote myself . I can't wait to see what you do next..
I dont think he knew, it probably ran ok on a start. I was laughing thinking the snootch rocket would be a good place for that engine, hahaha. I liked the rusty blazer idea but then I thought what about that old caddy if its still around? Glad you got your Mojo back. Love the Duff figurine on the toolbox.
I'm new here to your channel From Puddings fam You got all the cool.
Videos that I can catch up on like the channel a lot
Welcome!!
Hey Mortske, this is the first video of yours that really blows!! Damn, really hoped it was better, i've been eyeing it in the background for a few weeks now, hope you can get it fixed and don't have to sell the shop to do it! I wonder if the Monte Carlo guy sold it on like that? Anyway, thanks for the video, I can't wait to see the '55 gasser project get started!
That engine is screaming” put me in a Tri-5 straight axle gasser.” “ it’s my Hone!”
Agreed!
