Love the extra long video! I'm jealous of all the food you got to experience. The way I interpret the way they describe Uni Courses is that they say the quiet part out loud. Like, imagine if the Universities that follow capitalism said of their classes, "You are paying us to learn how to be better workers." Bit of an exaggeration, perhaps, but you get what I mean.
Listening to the part about the cultural norms document- I’m impressed and obsessed with how well thought out the planning of this trip was. I work an admin job at another University in NC. That part of the story was deeply satisfying.
I gotta agree, I was very impressed the whole time with the level of planning for the whole trip. Everywhere we went, train tickets were ready, or someone was ready to pick us up, or hotel rooms were ready, or people ready to give us a tour, it was all very well done. Even just the process of getting the Chinese visa. I think largely thanks to the NC Education Society and our Office of Global Engagement.
I lived in China for a year as an ESL teacher in Jilin City(a small city with a population of 1.2 million people)many many years ago. It is a different world. You've brought so many memories back. It sounds like you had a great and mind broadening experience.
A free opportunity to go to another country sounds awesome, being able to have a glimpse to a part of their lives and culture. I'm envious that you were able to ride their trains (especially the maglev train) wish we had them in the states and the food you got to eat. Thanks for sharing your trip to China with us. About the guy working on a Mao portrait, I'm sure Chinese people are taught their own history around Mao. That time is still in living memories and arguably they probably know more about it than we do. Both the good parts of his teachings and his failures as a leader. It's good to remember that we're never going to be told the full picture of a leadership from a system that goes against our system's interest. It's good practice to question the bias perspective that we're told or we'll never get the full picture.
Hullo Peter, I am so excited to hear about your trip! I have no plans, None! To visit China. I have thoughts of going to Scotland or maybe New Zealand? For foreign destinations the list is quite short. I would like to visit relatives in North Carolina, Michigan, maybe even Colorado. I have been to Michigan as a youngster and Arizona too. Well back to the video, you are just 36 minutes in so far so plenty more to hear about!
the heating thing is deff cultural. I would assume most of the world does not do heating like the US. me personally I dont get it, i live in a hot place so I love it when its cold and i get to use anything else than a t shirt. I dont get heating cuz we have clothes. Cooling i get because when its hot you can't keep taking clothes off forever.
Peter, do you like perfumes, fragrances? You seem quite sensitive to art supplies smells. I was wondering whether you'll venture into the art of perfumes,, maybe starting with bottle desings as that might be closer to your interests and expertise with drawing/painting. Maybe draw the description of the scent.
If I may ask... what dates were you in the Detroit airport?? Want to know how close I came to running into *the* Peter Draws during my weekend trip on the 13th 😂
Chinese trade schools have libraries like stadiums. Meanwhile, we Americans have to be kept dumb enough not to understand who actually pays the cost of the tariffs we're about to pay for the goods that the students at said Chinese trade schools are about to skillfully help produce. *Siiiiiiiiiiiigh*
@@peter_draws of course we do. I was making a generalized statement on the disparity of overall quality and quantity of investment in our respective educational systems - especially at the trade school level.
Yeah I know what you mean, and you’re not wrong, it was impressive and surprising how determined and focused their efforts appeared, but there were also unsettling undertones of compulsion and/or a lack of options for a lot of people.

Thanks for sharing your story, it was great listening to it while working on a project myself. Would love to visit China some day too, lucky you!

I know the video is about China but I am laughing at your little stop in Detroit being compared to the setting of I Am Legend 🤣🤣
Thanks for sharing. Sounds like fun time and cultural education! I am now interested in visiting China. 😊
Peter I loved the narrative.

Hello , 160 likes for this excellent drawing vidéo see you later my friend 👋 ✏️✏️
The drawing has Horst Janssen vibes ❤
Cool drawing! What kind of holder and lead did you use? The clean lines and shading depth are amazing.
2B lead in a rotring 600 0.5mm mechanical pencil

Thanks for sharing Peter; delightful travel. BTW Do you have an over developed abductor pollics brevis muscle from repetitive drawing?
Yeah, I thought it was a big drawing muscle, but some commenters have been telling me lately it might be a cyst haha
Hello. Can I write a link to my works in the comment?

Wait till you speak fluently and you hear the way the chinese talk about westerners and Africans. It was the most racist country I've ever lived in. 😢
