Drip pants are for small leaks like the one caused by this grommet that needs to be replaced on a regular basis. I install a drip pan after this repair. It didn’t help when the hose on the recirculating pump popped a hole. I installed a GFI so maybe next time the washer shuts off. I installed a water alarm underneath and will only run a cycle if I’m home.
Thanks for posting this. This ended up being a cheap fix. In this economy, the idea that Kitchenaid/whirpool would force its customers to replace the whole sump pump is absolutely disgusting. I mean, I am doing okay, but there are so many people who can barely put food on the table.
THANK YOU! I followed your video step by step. Problem for me was a very clogged line from the disposal to the dishwasher - right near the disposal side. I simply loosened the screw holding the line to the dishwasher and used a small snaking tool to clear it out. Ran the washer on rinse only and it drained completely! Total cost - $2.98 for the snaking tool and a bit of my time. THANKS again!
Nice video. I just finished and it made my life a lot easier. One addition, it was clear that you and a number of the commenters found removing the gasket the hardest part. I found that if I used your idea of using liquid detergent as a lubricant it worked well for removal, as well as installation. I poured Dawn over the grommet - rotated the grommet with my pick, so the Dawn slipped down the sides - give it ten minutes and it came right out. Also, I found vinegar helped a lot to clean up all that dishwasher detergent residue. Thanks
Another grateful viewer here! Between yours and Scottthefixitguy's video, we were able to fix this problem for around $20, including getting the right tool. We thought we were going to have to replace our six-year-old dishwasher. Luckily we found the leak early and our hard wood floor only sustained minimal damage.
Fixed mine and have a few thoughts. Get a pick set from your favorite store which will make seal removal easy. Then get the new seal. When you install the new seal use a socket to help press the seal into place. Boom!
Step by step, this video is guiding me thru. And all the comments are so helpful, especially "twist the thingy while pulling off the big tube" and "put a little Dawn dishsoap on the thingy and wait for 10 minutes." Hopefully I can finish it up as soon as the new part arrives today!

Same problem that my Kenmore had. Video was a very informative guide. The old grommet was a pain to remove. It's a combination of rubber and steel, and you have to really pry on it to pop the old one out. Use the small pick set. You'll probably bleed some. You will be better off pulling the dishwasher out and flip it on its side to remove the motor from the underneath. After that, it was a bit easier to do.
You absolutely must use silicone lubricant. Often it is sold with faucets (I bought the Moen silicone from Home Depot) or at Amazon. I installed the grommet first time without and it continued to leak. Repeated the process, but this time silicone around the diverter shaft and in the well that the grommet fits in. The silicone allows the grommet to seat deeper, and to seal against the diverter shaft. Six months later, no leaks.
This video helped me fixed my KitchenAid KDFE304DSS1Dishwasher, it was very smooth. My advise: read ALL the comments, there are so many warm-hearted people left their experience here, made me get job done without any issues.

I order the same part from your Amazon link and it does fix the leak. But I just have one suggestion: it is easier to remove the seal with long flat nose pliers. This was awesome and so appreciated. Took some additional plumber's tape, but the problem was solved. FYI, in researching this, I found out there is a class action suit that is in the settlement stage covering most of these dishwashers. Thanks again for taking the time to share this fix with others.

A few things I want to add: - When removing/reconnecting the big pipe, try to twist the bottom cap at the same time, it will make it easier - Mine still leaked a bit after replacing the seal, Ryan Calovic mentioned that he used PTFE seal tape. I did it and it stopped the leak - The new grommet does not sit flat to the slot so don't try to push it down too much - The instruction works for almost all KitchenAid, mine is kdte204ess1
I replaced the seal and it still leaked. I ordered seals from different sellers on Amazon and they were essentially the same. I also bought some silicone plumber's grease. Replaced the seal and filled the cavity with a big blob of grease. That stopped the leak for now.
The shaft is thin plastic and it will be easy to score it as you dig out the seal, so be very careful. If you do score the shaft, it won’t seal properly after that even with a new seal.
Amazing video! But use plumbers grease, the first time around my gasket was still letting a little water through, I reinstalled with a dab of plumbers grease and it was a perfect fix.
This quick fix did the trick for a few days, but started leaking again Trying out adding silicone adhesive now like what other comments I read about see if that does the trick My KitchenAid dishwasher is only 3 years old Feel this should of been a recall from the manufacture. I'll follow up if it works But if it doesn't I'll be buying a different brand

Great video. Did you put that "spring thing" @9:59 mark back in the new seal/gromet? Looks like their is a space for it on the side that faces up, a second "ring" if you will the spring would seat into
my grommet comes out from the top just like yours. My KitchenAid dishwasher looks the same The issue is the instructions say that the grommet is to be installed from underneath. That is it goes right on the diverter motor. The grommet that I took out fell all apart so I don’t know what it should look like but I’m pretty certain it doesn’t look like the one in the link that you gave

I did this, and it’s still leaking…I’m looking through diagrams, trying to see what else could be there…it leaks out of the same area under the dishwasher as seen in the video
I replaced the grommet and it kept leaking. Finally figured out it was leaking on the outside of the grommet, instead of the inside - which is what I initially thought. I temporarily fixed the leak by wrapping the grommet with white plumbers tape (cut in half width wise) before putting it back over the diverter motor shaft. Hasn't leaked since, that was two days ago 😁👍🏻
@@khoapham1821 hey man, I haven’t created any TH-cam videos, but I can explain it: basically, take about 2.5-3 feet of PTFE thread seal tape, and cut it in half length wise (a pain in the butt - it helps to have the half you’re not starting to cut at have some weight holding it down - i.e., the tension helps when cutting); take one of the halves and start tightly wrapping it around the rubber grommet. You have to kind of gauge how thick you make it, otherwise the grommet won’t fit back where it goes. Let me know if you have any other questions :)
I screwed up and put this in upside down. Thinking the groove would always hold water. So I’m testing it but have to get another one and put it in groove side up. Arrgh. Should have watched this. The diagram showed this sort of but not well enough.
OK, so I have a Kitchenaid model KDTM404EBS1 which takes a diverter motor p/n W10843811. Appliance Repair and Henry's Appliance Repair suggest changing the diverter motor as well JIC there's corrosion. OK, I'll spend the $123 for the motor, but I don't want to by an entire Sump Assy to get the seal. What's the correct seal p/n? Please someone help?

I did not have leaks after the repair, BUT unrelated the filter/impeller went out in my unit. I ended up just replacing the whole pump/motor unit with new as I couldn't find the proper filter/impeller part.
Fun fact: KitchenAid model KDTM354DSS5. I wasn't able to dig out the old grommet from topside so I removed the entire dishwasher and flipped it on its back, removed the diverter valve and had to use the chuck end of a 21/64 drill bit to force it out. I also found that the underside of the diverter shaft was caked with soap scum so cleaned that too while in there. Other than that, smooth sailing. Thanks for your pioneering insights.
@@joem.7705 Yeah, pulled the motor and got the internal filter impeller out (think that it was 3 screws). The filter is basically a thick perforated foil. I think a popcorn kernel made its way to mine and took it out. It was mangled which stopped the impeller from turning. The replacement filter part that I saw listed for this thing everwhere had a different part number and said something like "new". It didn't fit properly and made noise, didn't clean properly. I just uploaded a video of replacing the whole houseing. While a bit pricey, feels like I got a new dishwasher now.

@@davecashman8336 yes it did fix my issue with the leak. I'm sorry don't remember what way I put it in, I pulled out the old and put new one in the same way I pulled old one out. Hopefully it fixes your issues also.
My kitchen aid is model KDFE304DWH0. They don't seem to sell what the small grommet and the one you have listed is slightly too big to replace. The only thing I can find is replacing the whole motor which just doesn't seem necessary
Huge Thank you for putting this up! Repair guy quote me $750 to replace entire pump/motor assembly. I fixed mine for $9. There are a lot of helpful comments. Read them all! Here's my tip: My grommet was IMPOSSIBLE to get out BUT If you REMOVE THE DIVERTER MOTOR FIRST from underneath, the grommet is VERY easy to get out It's very easy to do. Turn the diswasher on its side and it's just two screws. You don't even need to disconnect it, just pull it out and you will have much easier access from the top, and then put it back in when you are done. It took me 3 min to take the motor off and then the grommet came right out. I have a Kitchenaide KDTM354DSS5 purch in 2020. ALWAYS ALWAYS WHEN REPLACING THESE put a lil dap of Dielectric Grease on these are they will not seal. Same if you replace entire sump pump.

@@khoapham1821 hey man, I haven’t created any TH-cam videos, but I can explain it: basically, take about 2.5-3 feet of PTFE thread seal tape, and cut it in half length wise (a pain in the butt - it helps to have the half you’re not starting to cut at have some weight holding it down - i.e., the tension helps when cutting); take one of the halves and start tightly wrapping it around the rubber grommet. You have to kind of gauge how thick you make it, otherwise the grommet won’t fit back where it goes. Let me know if you have any other questions :)

I screwed up and put this in upside down. Thinking the groove would always hold water. So I’m testing it but have to get another one and put it in groove side up. Arrgh. Should have watched this. The diagram showed this sort of but not well enough.
Did you instal it with grooves (openings) up or down?

just did this repair and it stopped leaking at the spot it was leaking - now it is leaking from somewhere else - anybody encounter this?
Are you able to move your diverter valve by hand? My dishwasher only ever sprays from the back. It seems the valve never moves to the other positions.

OK, so I have a Kitchenaid model KDTM404EBS1 which takes a diverter motor p/n W10843811. Appliance Repair and Henry's Appliance Repair suggest changing the diverter motor as well JIC there's corrosion. OK, I'll spend the $123 for the motor, but I don't want to by an entire Sump Assy to get the seal. What's the correct seal p/n? Please someone help?

I did not have leaks after the repair, BUT unrelated the filter/impeller went out in my unit. I ended up just replacing the whole pump/motor unit with new as I couldn't find the proper filter/impeller part.
Fun fact: KitchenAid model KDTM354DSS5. I wasn't able to dig out the old grommet from topside so I removed the entire dishwasher and flipped it on its back, removed the diverter valve and had to use the chuck end of a 21/64 drill bit to force it out. I also found that the underside of the diverter shaft was caked with soap scum so cleaned that too while in there. Other than that, smooth sailing. Thanks for your pioneering insights.
@@nutty-cool How did you know your filter/impeller went out on your unit? Do you have a whole pump/motor unit part number?
@@joem.7705 Yeah, pulled the motor and got the internal filter impeller out (think that it was 3 screws). The filter is basically a thick perforated foil. I think a popcorn kernel made its way to mine and took it out. It was mangled which stopped the impeller from turning. The replacement filter part that I saw listed for this thing everwhere had a different part number and said something like "new". It didn't fit properly and made noise, didn't clean properly. I just uploaded a video of replacing the whole houseing. While a bit pricey, feels like I got a new dishwasher now.

@@davecashman8336 yes it did fix my issue with the leak. I'm sorry don't remember what way I put it in, I pulled out the old and put new one in the same way I pulled old one out. Hopefully it fixes your issues also.
My kitchen aid is model KDFE304DWH0. They don't seem to sell what the small grommet and the one you have listed is slightly too big to replace. The only thing I can find is replacing the whole motor which just doesn't seem necessary

My grommet was IMPOSSIBLE to get out BUT If you REMOVE THE DIVERTER MOTOR FIRST from underneath, the grommet is VERY easy to get out
It's very easy to do. Turn the diswasher on its side and it's just two screws. You don't even need to disconnect it, just pull it out and you will have much easier access from the top, and then put it back in when you are done.

I spent 30 min trying to get the grommet out. It took me 3 min to take the motor off and then the grommet came right out.
