Listening to this song when "Hold Your Fire" was released, shortly after our second child was born, made me realize that we had DONE LA, and LA was done with us. By the end of the '80s, having played in a rock band and worked as a PR exec in Hollywood, I was pretty rung out.
So we sold the house, took the money we'd doubled, and ran ... back home to Arizona where we could pay half as much, in cash, for four times as much home. With plenty of "screw you" dough in the bank to spare and a much saner existence.

This Canadian group was my all time favorite group. Not only did they have diversified music, their lyricism to life is so philosophically true. Neil Peart was a true artist. He was a modest family man as well.He suffered a great loss with the passing of his wife and daughter. Yet through it all he inspired a great many through his music and lyricism from his music. Thank you Neil and Geddy and Alex for helping me and others get through life. For those who appreciate good music, remember this music as a gift to all of us.

My dog who I’ve known for most of my life is getting to the point where we’re having to consider putting him to sleep and this song has helped me cope with that to an extent. I know there are people out there going through worse than I am and I just hope they find a way to heal.

Your words are so very true. In the arrogance of our youth, we only THOUGHT we knew what the lyrics meant. We had no life experience.....we had no clue. Throughout life you can listen to the same song and it will take on a different meaning. We are different places throughout our lives, which gives us a different vantage point which in turn gives us a different perspective. The take one gets on a song changes with each change of those vantage points. The magic that is music!! Couldn't imagine life without it.

I dunno ... I think that I had this kinda figured out by the time I was in college. I’ve always been a sentimental person, though. So in junior high school, I missed elementary school. In high school, I missed junior high school. In college, I missed high school. Now of course I miss college.

well you know - they don't sound like they're using autotune, that has almost become the single barometer for me of whether a song is good or not - "does the singer sound like a dalek who was obviously made to work on hope instead of being paid?"

A nearly forgotten band..best drummer, best bassist..best lead/rythm band ever..Canadian or not..Rush was and still is a band that brought you in..threwyoi thru a tumbler..and you came out sparkling! Lol mass love to the best three man band that made 4-5 man bands jealous!

I was a senior in H.S. when this came out and the lyrics of course make you reflect on the big jumping in the deep end with graduation and getting on with life, the drifting apart of classmates etc. Now 31 years later it really hits, HARD. The passing on of family and friends, the growing up of children, the growing apart of lovers..... Neil must be on another level of existence to write the lyrics he does, the whole band is just on another plane of existence. Thank you Rush, for the great music and great emotions that are inspired by the music.

When the band started out, they were more hard rock. Listen to songs like Anthem, Xanadu, the Trees, and A Passage to Bangkok. I think they only later lost the harder edge, and putting more of a new wavish product out. I think their Signals album sorta signaled their left turn into a new direction. LOL. I don't care what direction they headed. It has worked!! This band is incredibly awesome! Sad to see them retire. I never had the experience of going to one of their concerts, but i will always watch videos of them in concert. They are a sight to behold!

Mine also. Also, my dear childhood friend passed away last year. Perhaps one of the biggest Rush fans ever to walk the earth. On my flight back home from his memorial service, I put on my headphones, played this song and closed my eyes. What happened next I will Never EVER forget. He "visited" me. He conveyed several things like " He was all good. and it is all real" (Heaven). He told me to slow down like the song implies, cherish life. I must add, he did all of this with no words spoken. Impossible for me to explain. This is... a great song.
