in a way, i bet that was a bit of a drag for the boys, for rush and-the-boys, namely alex, and the guys, ha ha
they were lucky to be good enough for alex to stick wit'-'em! they probly made it look easier than it actually was, but seriously, the boys, were lucky neil was cool-enough-to-hang wit' 'em like he did..
like i slightly doubt he could've done half of what he did, wit'-any-other-band,

I hear what you're saying. I've kind of struggled a bit with this song as by one reckoning it seems selfish.
I picked up a lot on the "look what you've done to us" sort of thing when I heard it first, but having had to deal with someone that had gone to the edge a few times, the last time I had to deal with it, I took the attitude alluded to in this song, letting the person know how what they were doing was affecting those around them and their lives. In truth it was a mix of that selfishness and a last ditch frustrated attempt to jolt the person out of the danger zone.
Whether that was the right thing to do or not, I don't know, but I know that the person stayed out of the danger zone after that and is still with us.
I've read in the comments section here that the song successfully took at least one person back from the precipice and if it did no more than that, then the song was very much worth recording.

This song has saved my life more times than I care to count. When this was released, I was an awkward, socially inept teenager. And there was more than a time or two that the bullshit I was dealing with piled up higher than I thought I could climb. Suicide seemed like the only way out. This song reminded me that I was not alone, pulled me back from the brink. I walk the razor's edge now, and I give nary a piping hot fuck about what anyone or anything thinks about me. Thank you. Neil. It was a hard lesson, but worth learning.

Try not to be too hard on Mr. Cornell for what happened. His wife has been pretty adamant about her feelings that the medication he had been on for anxiety (which, alarmingly, has a reputation for causing side-effects that involve acute depression and even suicidal tendencies), may have been responsible, and he was even trying to communicate such when they were last in contact. In short, she asserts he was definitely telling her "something feels really wrong right now; don't know what exactly, but I feel like this is bad." And basically was not "himself" or "in his right mind" when he ultimately committed suicide.

J Lama That was your first mistake. If you rely on a false deity as your guide through life you will be disappointed at best. Over and over again. If it gives you strength, that is fine. But through the ages man has relied on something that does not exist. And he has died by the masses anyway. I try to hold the utmost respect for ones religion for it is a personal and private thing. In the end, we still don't know for sure if "he" is "up there", no one has ever seen him, and religion feeds on an emotion, that which cannot be verified. At all. And no one has EVER come back from the dead with a brochure from heaven. Another man made fallacy. Hope you are doing well anyway.

    RIP Neil Peart.
We are all still saddened and the world is a bit less bright without you in it...this song has been in my head for 2 weeks now in the library of Rush songs in my head I couldn't remember the name or album.... Finally.
No matter what era, RUSH, even in these later albums that didn't always capture or hold the attention of many of us early fans, they ALWAYS had several songs on their albums that had awesome sections of melody, rhythm, and groove whether it was Neil's drum lines or Geddy's bitchen bass runs or Alex with some beautiful arpeggio lick that just resonates deeply, with bass and drums & even if only for a few bars, brings it all back, all the genius we discovered in 1977 & carried on into the 80s & beyond..
As a 13 yr old kid,. RUSH was my first real personal "favorite band" in 1977 ( strangely even tho they are connected i never felt the same way about the 1st " favorite band " i decided I liked when I began to develop my own personal taste in music, some how i knew KISS was of the moment, a passing thing,.. while RUSH I never stopped loving and listening to even into the later 80's when the keyboards pushed many of us away a bit... we were always not far off...
It is absolutely heartbreaking once again to process the loss of Neil Peart especially cruel after the ridiculous tragedy he found a way to survive and live through and found love and happiness, and a new life with a new family again.
    It just pisses me off.

Whenever I hear this song, I am filled with a love for Rush so deep because it really feels like they love me, too. Because this song does show how Rush loves their fans and just people in general. This is what kept me going when I thought life wasn’t worth living. Thank you, Rush, for gracing the universe with your awesomeness, and for speaking to me when I felt like no one else understood.

Two lyrics stand out:. "A noble warrior who lost the will to fight."
Then, "Nothing noble in your fate."
Perspective: While you live and breathe, there's hope and a chance for a turnaround. You can turn around and still have the hope of restoration in honor. To turn from the permanent solution is noble. It means you're going to face your challenges in any aspect of your life, with bravery and hope. It can only happen while you breathe. Get your hopes up!

Stunning song. As a life long Rush fan, bassist, and lyricist for over 35 years, their music has always inspired me to be a better player and writer, but when I first heard this, the hole in the pit of my stomach told me that Neil had dug very deep and struck an emotional nerve. He has been quoted as saying he gets very emotional playing this tune. I could see it when I saw the Presto tour. I get emotional when I listen to it, especially after the 3rd verse with "Christ what have you done!"

Name a band in the last 30 years, or better yet, name a band “EVER” that had lyrics like this. It’s not about the usual crap. It’s about worldly thoughts, relationships, with yourself, the universe, your fellow man and how you fit into all. Neil was a master of lyrics and was such a class act, and it’s ironic he got brain cancer. His brain was so big and full information and dreams, it attacked itself. How prophetic is that? The man was a genius. They say that………Paul McCartney was a lyrical genius. I’d put up Neil’s work against his any day. What a guy, what a man, what a musician. The world was and will always be a better place place because Neil Peart was part of it. It’s that simple. ❤❤❤
