this frickin' album coincided with the so-called harmonic convergence, eh? well, i know it was a weird year, that anyone should be glad to revisit, hey, how's everyone doin' in 1987, right? haha~
Sometimes I get the feeling that one can save hundreds if not thousands of dollars on therapy just by listening to Rush lyrics(ok maybe not all of their songs but certainly ones like this). ;)
Played this for my brother two mornings ago during a tough time. Listened he did, and asked, "That's a good song, what is it?" And I told him Neil Peart was an introvert like you, and we both teared up and lost it with him leaving the room to bawl his eyes out. Neil's lyrics are forever timeless.
I pray that your brother is feeling better. The pandemic and all the chaos in the world has put an immense amount of stress on us all. Thankfully music, especially any song crafted by Neil is a wonderful way to listen and gain understanding into so much.
Peart's masterful lyrics paired with Geddy's unique voice created my all time favorite band. So much so that I could easily listen to just the voice and still love it
Disney is hinting at female power and "all get along" for their christmas gift under the tree this year. thing about hinting the key word is not to get in your face about it.
On of the most beautiful rush songs imo. Both the music and the lyrics. A lot of mid 80's rush gets a bad rap (and some of it for good reason) but some of their best songs came from this time period and this is one of them.
Just so you know, everyone will have an opinion, especially Rush fans and Superconductor may not be one of their best, but if you compare it with some of the crap they're passing off as music today...it starts to look better oh and Rush rules!
Right? I mean I can accept it dying off a little at the last two tracks, unlike the last three synth albums, but I still will listen to those tracks with a fondness. The rest of the album is intense! It's got some gloss but it's so layered production wise AND lyrically that it's just as relevant as any of their greats. If I was dying and you asked me to pick my last song I would chose Open Secrets before all the first four albums, and about 80% there after.....worst album? Please. I need some Mission some days, and so do many.
Time will not do its Healing, Understanding of the particular condition / trauma etc. will and our forgiveness will do its healing when we let go and let GOD .
I remember buying this album the day it came out and being a little disappointed... I considered it a little too radio friendly. However, I kept listening and grew to love this amazing album and I still hear something new every-time I hear it. Thank you Rush for every thought inspiring note!
+Tony Stewart some of these songs sound good enough to be radio hits but they still have those "rush" elements outside the box. I've learned to like it as much as anything else of theirs.
I used to listen to this song all the times when it came out. I like the lines a lot... Closed for my protection Open to your scorn between these 2 directions My heart is sometimes torn. ...very nice style of writing... Thanks for sharing.
It's awesome how you can hear anything in rush lyrics and nothing to do with love as a jelous guy or the hatred and fear between a man a a woman, the anger of the gender does not apply here. i lovew rush lyrics.
This song went right trough me today...when I needed it...!! Just another bad day...And I always loved this song... Rush always in my best and worst moments...Thank you guys for so much!
Just open up to love and happiness....don't dwell on thoughts and emotions there just that ...put them in a bubble and let them float off Rush makes me let go with every song.....you are enough x
This song gets me every time. Such a hidden gem among their songs. Lyrically, musically... all of it. The closing outro of this song makes sense where I feel that when a relationship ends, two parties involved would part ways. In this case, you got the bass, drums, guitar, and synths "not" syncing with each other, yet somehow, works perfectly together, going their separate ways.
Geddy realy drilled the "basslines are important in music" here. they are more predominant in this Red colored "Hold Your Fire" album than ever before. very ominous.
“Open Secrets” (1987) came out of a conversation between Neil Peart and Geddy Lee about people they knew and how they went through life without properly addressing problems that were affecting them. Neil Peart (1988) : “Quite a lot of my ideas come from having conversations with other people. I take their observations and viewpoints and personalize them. Unfortunately a lot of people think these songs are personal statements. I don’t want that to happen because it would seem I’m unburdening myself and that would be tiresome.” Geddy Lee (1988) : “That song went through a lot of changes, and by the end of it, we had established this bass riff near the top of it. At the end we got into this groove when we were in the demo stage that we knew would be fun. So when Neil locked into that groove and went with it, he felt so good that we just let him go. And I just jammed to what he already put down.” 💚🥁💙🎸💛 May you rest in peace, Neil Ellwood Peart (1952 - 2020)… 🌹
Such a good message to all people which understood this song:"I lie awake with my secrets, spinning around my head, something that somehow, escaped me, something you shouldn't have said. I was looking out the window, I should have looked at your face instead."
Alan Peters alex tied the whole thing togerher. i have had knock down drag outs with my best friend of 30 years over 70s vs 80s rush. i have stated since presto i love all. he finally gets it. just introduced him to counterparts

Geddy’s bass line is next level on this song. So busy and funky, but still serves the song to its fullest. Definitely an ‘80s Rush bass line, though lol
Peart has covered so many amazing topics lyrically in Rush tunes over the years. So beautifully captures the experience of love, hurt and growing in a relationship.
At the end of the past year i began listening rush, well, i've listen YYZ, and i thought, shit if they made this song they should've wrote at least a few more that good, i thought they were a metal band, didn't what i was going to found, and men, i got really really surprised and moved, moving pictures, hold your fire, signals, power windows, grace under pressure, 2112, Hemispheres, permanent waves, in that order in just 2 days, each one so diferent, then i found the drummer was the lyricist, so fucking badass, just thank you guys, thank god o whatever the hell is "up there" for finding you at this young age!!!! (I haven't heard of them because in Colombia, at least in my city, nobody have ever listen to any other song than YYZ, mamita what the've been missing...)

I think that this album has aged rather well especially this track.

Rush's music needs to be in The Louvre next to the Mona Lisa. It's THAT good.
Damn straight!
Moving pictures?....giggle
Ain't that right brotha?
Not true, the Mona Lisa doesn’t deserve to be graced with its presence

I agree I think so to screw therapy just buy like Power Windows or another album like Clockwork Angels and listen it will help you
RustyisGreat5 Oh definitely CW. That is one of their most psychologically probing lyrically.
+RustyisGreat5 All that you can do is “wish them well"
Ryan Travis Yes my point

"Let it go" - You see Disney, Rush is that far ahead of it's time, and they managed to not make it annoying.

@@RushFanatic87 yes, it was! lol
This song seems to have this hypnotic effect on me. The strained haunting notes of Lifeson's guitar seem to strike a cord with me.
The solos on this album are so magical, they capture the spiritual essence of the album and slap it on your face

This is a great dance song. Listen to that rhythm. RIP NEIL
For all of his chops, Neil was really all about the pocket. RIP Neil
A very meaningful song, oftentimes the truth seems to be much harder to accept than the lies we tell ourselves and others.
Thank you Neil, we will miss you.
