Played this for my brother two mornings ago during a tough time. Listened he did, and asked, "That's a good song, what is it?" And I told him Neil Peart was an introvert like you, and we both teared up and lost it with him leaving the room to bawl his eyes out. Neil's lyrics are forever timeless.

Right? I mean I can accept it dying off a little at the last two tracks, unlike the last three synth albums, but I still will listen to those tracks with a fondness. The rest of the album is intense! It's got some gloss but it's so layered production wise AND lyrically that it's just as relevant as any of their greats. If I was dying and you asked me to pick my last song I would chose Open Secrets before all the first four albums, and about 80% there after.....worst album? Please. I need some Mission some days, and so do many.

This song gets me every time. Such a hidden gem among their songs. Lyrically, musically... all of it.
The closing outro of this song makes sense where I feel that when a relationship ends, two parties involved would part ways. In this case, you got the bass, drums, guitar, and synths "not" syncing with each other, yet somehow, works perfectly together, going their separate ways.

“Open Secrets” (1987) came out of a conversation between Neil Peart and Geddy Lee about people they knew and how they went through life without properly addressing problems that were affecting them.
Neil Peart (1988) : “Quite a lot of my ideas come from having conversations with other people. I take their observations and viewpoints and personalize them. Unfortunately a lot of people think these songs are personal statements. I don’t want that to happen because it would seem I’m unburdening myself and that would be tiresome.”
Geddy Lee (1988) : “That song went through a lot of changes, and by the end of it, we had established this bass riff near the top of it. At the end we got into this groove when we were in the demo stage that we knew would be fun. So when Neil locked into that groove and went with it, he felt so good that we just let him go. And I just jammed to what he already put down.” 💚🥁💙🎸💛
May you rest in peace, Neil Ellwood Peart (1952 - 2020)… 🌹

Unfortunately, a lot of people think these songs are personal statements. I don’t want that to happen because it would seem I’m unburdening myself and that would be tiresome... One thing I personally hate is ‘confessional’ lyrics. The one where people reach down into their tormented souls and tell me how much they hurt. That’s really selfish and petty.” - Neil Peart in Merely Players

just luuuv that bridge "I never meant..." so sweet! Boys here are on top of their "pop-ish" songwriting game. This and "Presto" are just loaded with these little melodies that will stick with you for eternity. Greets from Poland!

And even more: how do they keep on doing "it" for several decades now... Talents definetely are highly concentrated in some lucky people who sometimes discover it in time, and who get the reckognition they deserver... Mr. David Gilmour too is one of those "chosen fews"...

Totally agree. Great post-Terry Brown track. But overall it's truly obvious that they sounded better consistently with Terry than without. Imo.
