By far one of the best Rafa Nadal's performances on hard ! Roger played a great match and great tournament but Rafa was at his very best. So many passing shots from him in this meeting, and incredible rallies from both players. This Fedal is so underated because it's "only" a 4 sets match in the semis (not 5, not a final) and because the final against Djokovic two days later was one of the best tennis matches of all time.
Totally agreed
The QF vs Berdych was arguably just as good as this match, maybe even better too! Nadal was inhuman this tournament.
Rodger Federer best player in world God of tennis
It’s underrated because it’s not statistically a well played match. Sure, there are some incredible points but overall, WAY too many unforced errors and some wildly miss timed shots by Fed. Federer does not return well of consistency. Almost all his 33 return errors were at least makeable, if not easy. Misses 4 routine returns in the 4th game of 2nd set! Then is broken to love playing crap after that to lose the set. Loses first 7 points of third set to go down 0-40. Atypical from Fed trying low percentage shots all match.
Federer: 76 errors to 31 winners. He has more than twice as many unforced errors than Nadal. Not nearly Fed’s best and Nadal is clearly the better player, this match.
2012 Australian Open is still the best tournament Rafa has ever played where he didn't ultimately win. Those wins over Berdych and Federer, and the narrow loss in the final, were all extraordinary matches.
It's definitely up there for sure. I would also put Wimbledon 2018 in that same category.
Yeah Wimbledon 2018 too. People often remember his brutal clash with Novak in the SF, but Nadal also had an epic QF against Del Potro that lasted like 5 hours and 5 sets.
@@jameswalker6864man you are wrong in some part.grass is less physically taxing.surface smooth so running won't make you that much tired.court is also short.nole Rafa semi was 3 day one which means not continuous still enough time for rest between those 3 days and one more thing .if there is no heat on grass then running is not even factor. dont make stupid argument
I could argue Rafaels 2019:AO campaign he obliterated Everyone except Nole. The likes of Demon Francis Berdych absolutely destroyed tistipas and he just beat Fed but yes 2018 Wimbledon 2011 us open 2017 AO 2014 AO I could go on forever I know all of Rafas great battles.
The best tournament Rafa has ever played : French open 2008 & 2017.
Even tho he lost, it's amazing how consistent Fed has been throughout his AO career. Besides 2015 and 2019, has either been the semis, finals or champion.
Still get slam beat easily by Novak the GOAT
@@SumboodyNao Alcaraz clears
@@loic951 prime Novak > current alcaraz
@@SumboodyNao Alcaraz is 20 years old lmao
@@loic951 don’t madder.
It's kinda interesting how Nadal generally dominated prime-Federer but later on in their careers, Federer made a comeback winning 6 out of their 7 last matches. People don't realize that at one point in time, it was 23-10 in favor of Nadal and only then did it become sort of close with 24-16
Yep. I remember at one point people saying the Federer just won't beat Rafa, except on grass.
That's because after 2014 Rafa's forehand has never been the same. And Roger also improved his backhand in 2017. That's literally it.
@@Madferit91exactly people just look at the age lol it’s got nothing to do with age or numbers (and it never will be regardless of what sport your talking about). It’s all to do with what you bring to the court on the day. 2017 roger hit through his backhand more, less slice and more flatten out cross court to rafas forehand, which change their entire match up (expect that French open semi where Nadal thumped him) also stet edberg got Federer to play more serve volley points and going up the court (which I think held him back quite a bit imo)
@@tonygiang3625 Agreed with eveyrhting you said. But even with that, I think Rafa's forehand not being as good was even a bigger factor than Roger's backhand. I think you put 2012 Rafa against 2017 Roger and I think Rafa takes it. His forehand from like 2010-2014 was the best FH of all time imo.
@Madferit91 Prime Federer had the best forehand of all-time.
2:40:34 This is one of the greatest passing shots of all time! What intensity from Nadal!
Don’t forget 1:05:38! Both were super clutch too considering they were in games where Rafa managed to break Roger’s serve and take the lead in the set.
And then 1:07:58 to break serve. This has to be the greatest Rafa passing shot performance ever, right?
Rafa played at a very high level in AO throughout the years, it's a shame that he only won it twice..
ı agree :(
Except for his title number, his record at AO is superior to his at US open. Somehow he always gets unlucky here
@@kiennguyen2738 yeah 6 finals here, but i think it's because he almost reaches us open in a bad physical shape, slow hard courts suits his game better
This is the only tournament as a Rafa fan that i would change the outcome of, with Rafa winning of course :(

nadal was never weak at AO and Wimbledon naaaaaah, roger and novak was beasts there. Vamos Rafa.
His records at ao are extraordinary except titles 😢which is disappointing after losing epic finals he could have same number of titles here as in uso and in wimbledon 2006 to 11 he was beast and 17 to 22 he returned there and played well but 12 to 16 years were struggling
Same applies to Novak and roger in french open
@@ramjeenakka586Even so, Nadal should feel fortunate to have got his second AO on account of a Djokovic deportation. The real tragedy is Sir Andy Murray. The Scot had so many great runs and many finals, yet no titles 😢 to show for.

2012 was an amazing year for Tennis, The Big 4 won each GS that year.
Not just that, but they each won "their" slam. Novak won AO (obviously), Rafa won RG (even more obviously), Roger won Wimbledon (of course), and Andy won the gold medal in singles (which only he has done twice). **I feel like the US open doesn't "belong" to anyone since Federer placed the DelPo curse on it in 2009.
@@sillyhead5 In a way it was kinda just for Murray to win the US Open in 2012 as his first slam because that's where he also made his first slam final as well, in 2008.
And 2009 through early 2013 probably the highest overall level I've ever seen across multiple guys.
Back when mens tennis was at its prime. Now we get pathetic match-ups such as Tsitsipas vs Khachanov in AO semis 😥
They BOTh look pretty good. Hitting hard, accurate angles. Nadal's lob looks top shelf. Both moving nicely.
If they have any luck with the draw, they might make a go of it and get to the quarters.
I'd LOVE to see that.
MEMORABLE GAMES
Those were the days maan... geniuses both of them
There have been billions and humans to exist and these are two of the best three players to ever hold a racket with two of them in this tournament in there prime.
Federer looks timid here. In 2017 and onward he looked very confident. It's like he found a new weapon with the BH that brought him immense confidence against Nadal's forehand.
gracias tennisss dos super grandes
People saying Federer played very well. But the reality is that he was good in patches. Made some really poor errors whether forehands, volleys or double faults!
You know how it goes. Fed loses to Nadal or Djoker? Was playing his best tennis ever.
@@mantaishere You know how it goes. Fed loses to Nadal or Djoker? Age, old, grandpa, out of prime, back injury, mono, not his best, paint, luck, fold, choke, crowd, matchup,...
@@AlanRR121I see you have multiple personas going depending on what video you're commenting on. You sound a lot like a previous poster around here, actually.
Well we heard for years that Federer's wins only came against 'babies' or those not yet in their prime (either surface-specific or otherwise).
@@mantaishere could you elaborate on these personas and videos?
These statements are made because Fedfans try to discredit Djokovic’s records.
@@AlanRR121 No, I won't spoil your fun.
Djokovic fans have done that with Federer's records for over a decade.
This is a really, really good match which no-one talks about as much as they should because it didn't go to 5 sets and wasn't a final. Federer's forehand was fantastic and his backhand held up really well against Nadal's forehand compared to years earlier. He made it so that Nadal would have to play his best to win and boy did he do that. Some of the passing shots were unreal, the shotmaking from both guys was very good
Can we just all agree that whenever you see Roger Federer lose a tennis match, it is mostly him gifting the match away than the opponent outplaying him
Federer plays breathtaking tennis to break the serve, and then just casually gives the serve away as he never played tennis b4
It’s pretty frustrating
Which means he's not the better player. If it's easier to cope by saying he 'gifted away' a few GS, go ahead.
By wanting to cut the breaks at every 3 games and at the end of each set you cut the service game of Federer at 5-4 in the 3rd set, we're on youtube guys if we want to skip the breaks we just have to press the move forward button you don't need to cut anyhting for god sake. Try to think about it next time thanks.

The chance that these two masters of differing style come together to put on this extraordinary level, precipitated by the sheer mastery of Federer's genius is astonishing. Nadal has to push his athleticism and grit all out to answer Federer's dominant execution with the level of desparation he has to produce, and patient, it pays off. Federer only loses because he's still too experimental with his unparalleled technical mastery where Djokovic and Nadal particularly will stay steady and completely locked in. Djokovic plays it a little cooler like Federer.
Days when Federer used to give up, mentally, against Rafa and Djokovic, pretty early.
That's why he lost almost 10 titles 😢😢
staple of any final. So sad not being able to watch these legendary titans brawl....
AO, I think there's a game missing at 1:51:02. Rafa holds for 5-4, then suddenly straight after that he's serving again at 5-5. Another game is missing as well, Fed holds for 3-2 in the 4th set and then is serving again at 3-3 right after. How was this missed?
Yes, this match was over 4 hours long, they've cut more than an hour of this match... I don't know why they do this. I didn't like them cutting even the changeovers, but now they're cutting entire games as well and then call it a "full match", how stupid...
What a great match. 2 legends.
Wait there's a game missing at 1:51:00.
federer always screwed up the most at the most crucial points against nad and djo
That third set summs up federer's career perfectly. He outplays his opponent until he is 1 step from victory then chokes it up . Then in the tiebreak he makes 5 unforced errors in a row then tries to clutch it up himself and losses it in the last point.
That's true, a 20 times grand slam champion is a choker. We have to read a lot of bs in the internet.
2:25:19 another game missing
Absolute bottle job from Fed. For such a great player he’s lost a lot of matches he never should have lost.
2012 Fed vs 2017 Fed were 2 totally different things. Crazy how weak his backhand was compared to his neo-backhand. The new bigger racket head size definitely helped along with taking the ball early.
Roger a sitting duck for Rafa without the neo-backhand
Roger always loses against Rafa due to shit tactics. Why in the world would he come to the net on Rafa's forehand so often. Rafa spanked him and rightly so!
Roger forehand always hitting early!! What an amazing shots
Love tennis
18:25 My God!

Best match ever.
Maybe not but AO 2012 is probably the best tennis tournament of all-time. The peak of tennis' golden era.
@@rm1507 Actually, you're correct.
Rafa’s level in that 3-2 game in the second set was so good. Federer didn’t even play a bad game at all; Nadal just broke him and took control of the match from there.
1:05:50 ❤❤
This was a closer match than maybe the scoreline suggests. So many twists and turns! Federer almost got back into the match and nearly broke Nadal's serve 5-4 in the fourth set.
glad he lost , we could then watch the best gs final of all time , with both djoko and rafa in their prime what an insane match that was

Australian Open- Novak Djokovic
French Open- Rafael Nadal
Wimbledon- Roger Federer
Us Open- Andy Murray

The 🐐humbled Nadal in the finals
Federer without his serve would be worse than Murray
it's missing the 9th game of 3rd set....

2:50:40
That cross court winner from Rafa at 1:05:43 has to be one of the greatest shots of all time. Phenomenal defence.
FEDAL on concrete and grass is boring because Nadal keeps playing into Rodger's backhand.

truth be told, i was a Federer fan until i started to realize how soft he was....... lost to marat safin at 2005 AO final, lost to nadal at 2008 wimbledon final, lost to nadal at 2009 AO open final, lost to Del Potro at 2009 US OPEN final, lost tp Djokovic at us open in 2010 an 2011, lost to Nadal again at 2012 AO open semifinal, and i'm not even gonna mention the many loss's to nadal at the French open.... for all of his artistry an fluidity on that court, he has no mental toughness.........none! he cracks, starts committing unforced error after unforced error.......that's why i call him Roger softerer-chokerer-frauderer!
He used heavy 340gr raquet. In 4th and 5th set your hand starts getting weak and tired on one hander. He said that if his kids play he would like them to use 2 hander. Btw I'm Djokovic's fan, not Fed crazy fan or something like that
