I am 20 years old and I was in a motorcycle accident and had a transverse displaced patella fracture. I had an ORIF done 11 weeks ago and my knee can now bend 60 degrees but I cannot bare weight when it’s bent. My doctor had given me a immobilizer after the surgery in which I still use. My knee is still very stiff and I feel like I’m not recovering as quick as I could be. I questioned my physician about a ROM brace and they kinda ignored it and suggested my therapist weaned me out of my immobilizer. I feel as if it would be easier to build strength by allowing it bear weight while bent while also still protecting the injury itself. Instead my knee buckles when I try to put any-sort of weight when it is bent. I am expecting my first child in November and I’m really rushing to get back to work and on my feet. I understand that it is a slow process to get healthy again but wouldn’t this allow for a much faster recovery?

Hey Doc...enjoyed your video. So back in 2021, I had a complete knee replacement, which took about 5 or 6 months to heal. Started running in 2022 and before long, I became hooked. Three weeks ago moving some furniture down a stairway I 'tweaked' my knee replacement knee. Became stiff so took a week off from running. Last weekend during a race, I heard a crack (or pop...or something) in replacement knee and limped the last 1 1/2 miles to finish line. Within about 30 minutes of finishing, I could barely walk, (let along drive home). Long story short, what was thought to be a soft-tissue injury ended up being a fractured patella (from top down to one of the outside pins that connect my original patella to the replacement knee). Told that I can't pickup or carry anything and need to take it easy for 6-8 weeks until further evaluation. Living on a farm, my poor wife now gets to load the outdoor wood furnace and I stand by to cheer her on. I should remind her that spring is just around the corner.
I'm gad it was helpful. Thanks for sharing your experience!
I had an accident 2 weeks ago and suffered open comminuted patella fracture of my right knee. Had surgery the same day as the accident, and currently I am doing physiotherapy diligently. As a medical doctor, it is hard for me to stay down and rely on other people to help me out instead of me giving the helping hand😅 but Oh well… all is good. Hope we all heal completely and without complications whatsoever.
How long did it take you to begin to place pressure on the leg after the surgery
@@anilsoomarie7039 I read somewhere 3-6weeks
I shattered my right patella falling off a motorcycle and didn’t realise was just extremely sore for a few days until my tendon snapped and I lost all lower leg control it was rebuilt with screws and wire , tendons re attached recovered well but now when I exercise I really struggle with pain at the front of the knee the advice given here is excellent
Thank you very much i had mine in 6 pieces after 2 months i was walking after a year still feel pain when putting to much pressure on the knee but i think i will fully recover thanks for sharing your knowledge
I tripped on a threshold while carrying a piano bench 9 days ago & flew 4 feet to a hard landing. There's a very small area at the base of my patella that if pressed on, causes extreme pain & a scream. Hopefully, in 6 weeks it will heal.
I think I had a similar issue with increased sensitivity on my knee but I took a recent fall where my patella completely fractured.
I broke my patella several years ago. Looking back, I remember it being very painful right after surgery but I found mostly it was incredibly annoying to use a walker in my recovery. At this point my knee that was broken is much stronger than the other one. lol
How long did the full recovery take?
I just broke my knee here I am now
@@TypeShit650 do you have discord? I'm going through the same thing
@@NK98_ A few months? I went on a cruise less than 6 mos later and did everything I could before the injury.
@@lynneperras1727 good to hear, was it in your case only the broken bone? (Patella) or was there more going on? In my case my cartilage behind the kneecap is also damaged together with mpfl ligament so the recovery is more complex
Appreciate your input Qualifications and explanation
Glad it was helpful!
You can have a comminuted fracture and still heal without surgery, if you’re lucky enough for it to be non-displaced. I’m going through that right now. Granted, it’s only “mildly comminuted” as described by one of the radiology reports (the MRI I got today, exactly 2 weeks post-injury), so I’m extremely lucky in that regard.
Same thing happened to me! Fell on my knee (comminuted Non-displaced fracture) thankfully at an Imaging center, so they were able to get x-rays immediately. Swelling & pain was AWFUL, but the following week, I was moving my knee back & forth pain free, so the Ortho gave me a locking brace & prescribed 4-6wks 1-2xs a wk of PT - no Surgery needed! Thank You, Jesus❣️

Hi Doc, like the video just wanted to see if you could give me some tips on some exercises that would get me going again I recently fell from a ladder at about 10 m high. I broke both of my femurs one was a compound fracture shattered both of my kneecaps both of my wrist shattered both always. My nose was in 160 places and shattered out of my head. Just wanted to see if you had any tips to help. I currently did this about a month ago. I am walking around still I had no spinal or head or eternal injuries, but left recovery due to family mishap and just wanted to know if you had any advice thank you
I'm not a physical therapist, so I don't really discuss specific exercise or rehab programs. I did record some videos a few years ago with a physical therapist, and those might be helpful for you.
Sorry to hear brother. Truly. Same situation for me. I mean broken leg wise not the severity. I have my left femur broken and my right knee patella was in 6 pieces 😕. I am exactly week one and I can walk with walker for 20-30 meters only. So much pain and swelling. I am not even in the rehab yet. I am trying to see what can I do to go back to my pre-accident situation. I cant tolerate this man 😢
So sorry to hear this bro sending you well wishes and positive energy i hope your healing experiences are quick 💜 much love bro get better
I probably got the rare one, the straight leg race. I already tool 2 good blows to my left & did not let it heal & I went out biking & wiped out pretty bad that my left leg that has the messed up knee already, extended all the back towards my back. It was a painful experience needless to say & I didn't sleep good at all but hopefully when I get back to Alaska, I'll be to go to the doctor to get it checked out.
Just fractured mine on Saturday had surgery on Sunday. Was walking and tripped going up concrete stairs. Funny part wasn't even drinking. I guess I was a victim of Murphy's Law. Just hoping for speedy recovery.
Hello Dr David
This is my CT scan report since about 3 weeks ago and I am waiting for surgery. I appreciate your opinion on the latest techniques for treating similar cases and what is the common prognosis. I am male, 70 yrs old, not athletic. Thank you so much
Report
==== ORIGINAL REPORT ====
Knee x-ray, from earlier today is noted.
There is a severely comminuted patellar fracture. Main fracture components have a horizontal orientation. Upper pole is largely
intact, with at least a dozen comminuted fragments comprising the lower pole. There is superior migration of the upper pole of
the patella by approximately 1 to 2 cm. There is gross disruption of the articular surface of the lower pole.
There are signs of associated regional soft tissue injury, as well as large joint effusion.
Visualized portions of the femur, tibia, and fibula are intact. Regional bones are osteopenic. There are relatively mild
degenerative changes affecting the medial femorotibial articulation.
There is an abundance of regional subcutaneous thickening, the appearance suggesting edema.
SUMMARY:
Severely comminuted patellar fracture.

My knee hit the ground and jammed in the artificial turf and now when I try and kneel down on my knees or apply pressure to my knee cap with fingers it’s gives me unbearable pain. I can walk like normal and bend it . What donyou think I have done ? This happened 10 days ago and it hasn’t got any better one bit . Any advice of what I’ve done ? 😭😭😭 I fractured my patella 03/24. About 5/6 weeks post surgery, I tripped but didn't fall but chipped a small part of my knee. Had to have a 2nd surgery. Didn't realize recovery was going to be this long. Very depressing situation.
Hey are you fyn now??
Great video, Doc. Very informative and easy to understand. At 71, I walked into a steel cable (guy wire) 15 months ago. It caught me across the throat. I wound up dragging my left toe the entire width of the sidewalk (the drag mark is still visible on the sidewalk). I broke my kneecap in three places and severed my patellar tendon in two places. Do you think dragging the toe four feet across the sidewalk break my knee and rupture the tendon or did I do all that damage when I hit the ground? I asked a couple people that question and I don't recall getting a definitive answer. Thank you again for the wonderful video.

I was only 20 and I'm 23 now and its been almost 4 years since then and I still struggle everyday, I was a very active person before my injury and now I can barley squat, get up from a low level, or even run. What do you recommend?

I had a torn patellar that was repaired with a loose bone fragment in my patella that was removed as well. That patella bone fragment grew back months later and then I got surgery for it to be removed. Now I have pain in the exact same area of the patella months after that surgery and my doctor is saying it could’ve grown back again. I would get an MRI but I’m at school and my doctors at home. I know you can’t give medical advise on here for obvious reasons lol, but could you tell my why a bone fragment could keep coming back after 2 removals? Thanks!
It's hard to say. That's not a common result of a patellar tendon rupture. I hope it turns out well!

I am now laying and recovering from the fracture, my case was that i am in my growth spurt (i'm 16) and my patellar tendon couldn't keep up with the growth and it was too stiff, one day i was on a camp that i go every year on and i was sprinting and when i landed on my left leg i just heard a snap that was followed with a lot of pain, i already had pain in that knee for a year already so i thought it will be fine and be gone in a month and then come back after few months because that what happened for the past year but after few minutes the pain started getting really bad and i couldn't bend my knee at all so i asked the doctor on the camp what to do and he said lay down and rest for a day, so i did but the pain continued, after about three days i could bend my knee but when i sit down i couldn't extend it even a little and it hurt when i tried i was on the camp for the next 10 days and when i came back to my country i did an mri and it was a horizontal fracture and it was 2.8 milimeters thick, they said that if i came the day when it happened i would need a surgery, so they put on a cast and they said i come back in 20 days to see if it healed. It turned out that because of the stiffnes my patellar tendon ripped the lower pole of the patella out
How can I know 😅if I need surgery

Broke my patella into 3 pieces from a fall. I am 3 1/2 months post op. This revovery is no joke! I have a very high tolerance to pain and this injury/recovery has kicked my butt.
I had a patella fracture surgery 2 weeks ago on my left knee. Now when I walk with crutches to do physio I feel like there's metal band around my knee that's not pleasant. The burning, electric and tingling sensation is definitely not pleasant in my whole leg. Is that normal?

Went to visit my family and having a 7 weeks holiday in Brazil. On 26Nov23 while attending a concert in Brazil had a fall hurt my knee. My gut feeling was telling it was bad. Very swollen and I could not bend the knee. I stayed in bad for mostly the rest of 6 weeks. Arrived back in Australia in a wheel chair. Could walk slowly and short distances but never could bend my knee. I did not got to the docs in Brazil coz I knew I will be in a surgery.
In Australia I went to the GP that referred me to the hospital Orthopaedic. Took 6 weeks for them to book me in meanwhile I started little by little bending my knee and got back to work as I have a cleaning business and to work no money. Very carefully I was back working even on the too ladders.
Very very careful
At my doc appointment they did an XRay and found out that actually I fractured my Patela but it was already healed. Now my question is: how much are this surgeries a necessary? I look at broken Patela surgery procedures and probably they would screw drive my bone making a whole taking precious bone tissues off put metal pins. Long time recovery etc etc. I am so happy I followed my instincts. Doctors are necessary but modern medicine is going out of track

I’m no doctor, but to my knowledge the surgeries are important to make sure that it heals correctly. Any fracture will heal if the bone isn’t completely separated. The problem is that the bone can be slightly out of place, in which case it will heal in a bad way. You might be lucky and have a fracture that can heal by itself, but you can easily end up with a less ideal situation, where the patella heals incorrectly. Again, I’m not a doctor. This is just my guess as for why surgery is necessary in most cases

So here i am in a big leg/knee immobilizer brace. Hoping this will help it heal so I dont need surgery. Are these injuries common? i really need to go up in the attic and get Christmas decor. Dumb dog.
Patellar fractures are fairly common, and unfortunately, most need surgery. Hopefully yours heal uneventfully.
Do we need to remove d K wires, pins after ORIF +patelectomy? When??
Did you end up needing surgery? I fractured mine 4 weeks ago and in a stabilizing brace. It’s a transverse fracture. Would love to know how you’re doing
@@nancimoll9901nope! All is well and I hope yours heals too!
Hiw long do you need to wear a brace for a non displaced patella fracture? Surgery is not required.

I can concur that it does not feel great. I had a dislocated and fractured patella and a torn patella tendon many years ago. It took a long time to feel "normal"
How long until full recovery?
@@NK98_ Mine was many years ago...so I was in a full length plaster cast for over 8+ weeks. And then weeks of physical therapy. It was months before I felt confident bending and twisting my knee. I'm not sure with the new braces and surgeries how long it would take.
@@KB-xd5wq thanks for your answer, did you manage to recover 100%? Any pain/stifness or all gone?
@@NK98_ I'd say close to 100%. Not sure if you're ever 100% after that. I lost a small part of the patella so it slides around at times. A few aches...but not too bad.
@@KB-xd5wq thanks, mine was a small stable fracture, hoping for 100% recovery
❤
