I had a type 4 TPF 4 months ago, that type is unusual. My recovery isn't going well. I was immobilized for 7 weeks, no rom, NWB for 9 weeks. I have alot of pain(especially the back of the knee) and swelling still. My flexion is at 120(normal 148), extension 4-7,(normal -6). I'm wondering if I should have a manipulation. I'm really frustrated with my PT, they are not working on my ROM anymore, say it's too late. I was a very active person before this and want to get back to playing sports. I'm wondering if I have meniscus damage, apparently the surgeon didn't look while he was in there. How is your range of motion, did you regain it? Hello, Dr. Geier. Thank you very much for this video explaining not only the actual TP fracture but also some potential outcomes in the future. 2 weeks ago, I injured myself with TP fracture and grade 1 MCL sprain on my left knee from skiing. I was not doing anything crazy, but the visibility was bad from snowing (at Mammoth, CA) and in rather heavy wet snow, I hit a crud and got myself ejected out from both skis. As I heard the pop with an immediate pain, I thought I dislocated my knee first. A long story short, I have never injured myself from skiing this bad even with years of alpine ski racing background. Now, I'm hoping to recover correctly and looking forward to the next ski seasons. Meanwhile, I am still in pain and can only dream of skiing,,,,,

I sustained a tibial plateau fracture in September 2022 after falling from a Wheelie Bin . It was corrected in surgery and I couldn’t weight bare for 10 weeks . Nearly 18 months down the track my knee joint is fine , I have no pain in it but the stiffness and numbness in my leg drives me insane . I do my physio exercises , plus yoga every day and walk short distances . My walking is still quite unsteady and I feel quite unbalanced. This injury has changed my life

I got a Tibial Plateau Fracture after a fall six years ago. I didn’t have an operation. I was put into a full leg cast but they were all very tight and needed changing often because my toes were turning blue. I asked how long it would take and I was told seven weeks but that my fracture wasn’t healing. They decided to put me into a cricket splint. They told me not to take it off. It was so tight when they took it off to do an X-ray the straps had been so tight my leg was the same shape and indented where the straps had been. I pointed out that the top of my foot was bent over and I was told that I’d got foot drop. I was sent to a physio and referred for an EMG test. I’d never able to bend my knee, it just stuck straight out. The physio told me to sit at the bottom of the couch, he perch beside me . Then he pulled my left leg over his knee and tried to force it to bend as he was trying to break a piece of wood. I screamed in pain, begged him to stop but he said that I only thought that I couldn’t bend my knee. The pain was excruciating and I told him that he was going to break my knee again. He said that he wasn’t bothered and that he didn’t care. I realised that he wasn’t going to stop so I just lay there sobbing until the appointment ended. He made a double appointment for two days time and he told me that after that he’d have my heel touching my backside and I’d be riding a bike. I was so traumatised, I couldn’t stop shaking and I cancelled the appointment. He’d written yo the clinician in the Orthopaedic clinic and he’d said that I was so pleased with my progress I’d became emotional. A few weeks later I got an appointment for the EMG nerve conduction test. It proved that I would be unable to to bend my knee or lift my foot due to nerve damage to the perineal and sciatic nerves.
Six years later, I am in a wheelchair, in severe pain, unable to walk, bend my knee and I have foot drop. Last week (23 rd December, 2024) I made an appointment to go to a Private Hospital to see an orthopaedic surgeon who specialises in knees. I told him what had happened and he’s sending me for a scan to see if there’s any bone splinters from the fracture stuck in my knee. I hope it is that because I’ve just been sent an appointment to go to that same physio for extensive physiotherapy.

I found with my surgery that the hospital will NOT explain what procedures are required and that “tomorrow morning “ your going downstairs to be pulled out to length and you’ll wake up with a bunch of metal on the outside of your leg.
Weirdly enough there are levels to this surgery that should be explained to the patient prior to the “day after “.

I suffered a TPF (type 6) on March 1 after a relatively minor bike accident on March 1. It was excruciating (and I’ve had 3 children without pain meds!)
What I didn’t know is the risk of an embolism after a leg break and that is what I had the night of my accident.
I spent 18 days in the hospital (in Germany) but was PWB from day one PO. 20 kilos as tolerated up to week 6 and then adding 15 kilos per week until FWB. It helped so much with sweeping and numbness and in general am doing well at 9 weeks PO. Also had a hinged brace at 30 degrees for 2 weeks, 60 degrees for 2, 90 for 2 and then fully open. I’m wondering why some doctors, especially in the US recommend NWB for so long? Those patients seem to struggle mentally and then physically for so much longer.

Thanks for this video - it was really interesting.
I was assaulted last month with someone wrapping their leg round the front of my knee and crushing very hard - which left me with a non displaced, depressed, tibial plateau fracture.
The UK hospital team were very good but I was very distressed with how it had happened with an assault.
Initially from X-rays it was thought I needed urgent surgery but CT showed it had started to heal well already.
To mention, straight after the injury occurred I saw a doctor in the local practice and although it was very very swollen, it was not immediately sore in any area so did not appear to be a fracture.
Life lesson is keep healthy, exercise, lots of Vitamin D and no smoking - apparently that’s what has helped my fracture to stater to heal well 😃

You are telling my story here. On the 16 June 2024 I got injured on my knee by some drunk guys. I was then admitted in hospital last month on the 17th june 2024 tibial Plato Depressed and I was assigned for surgical but with limited resources I had to wait for the right plate for surgery. Day before my scheduled surgery I went for x-ray and the results came back that surgery wont be necessary "Fracture United". So I have been home since Wednesday 17 July 2024. Resting and recovering. I hope get fully recovery. I dont drink nor smoke. I exercise and lift.
      Thank you so much.

I fell in the garden on September 2018. I cracked some ribs, sprained wrist and ankle, got a Tibial Plateau Fracture. I’ve never been able to walk since. I’m now in a wheelchair, unable to walk, weight bear, bend my knee and I’ve got foot drop. I didn’t have surgery.

Hello doctor. I am thirteen years past a Tibial plateau fracture and repair. Injured at age 55, now 68. I have all the screws and plates. I think everything went well. however, I am slightly bow legged in the left leg since then. No pain on a typical day, however, when I walk long distance or go on a hike, my knee becomes painful and I start to limp, ultimately, I have to stop and rest before I can continue. It's been this way since very shortly after my surgery. I thought to myself, this is just the way it's going to be. Recently I have noticed that my leg doesn't fully straighten when I walk. I feel that when I'm walking and roll off of my foot, that it puts extra stress on my knee and causing the pain. Have you had other complaints of this nature? Can it be repaired? Could the extra hardware in my leg be contributing to this? Are there exercises that would restore my full range of motion, or is the some sort of mechanical impediment? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have got a non dislocated severe schatzker 2 fracture. Is it the same thing you are explaining? Because my doc said the same thing. It's almost 4weeks now. How long does it takes to walk again? Currently I can only bend my knee like 20%

Hi- thank you for all the info! I came across your video in my research.
I am 22 years old and I've been recovering from a tibial plateau facture from a ski fall in March. After 8 weeks non-weight bearing no surgery and months of PT I've been doing a little better but not 100% back to myself before my injury. I still have a lot of pain in my knee when I walk too much or do any activities besides some light walking (Yoga, running, jumping, etc.)
I've been bummed to have to miss out on this ski season. But I know I would just damage my knee more. I am seeing my ortho next week. Hoping to get some answers on the pain and why I haven't been improving.
    I am discouraged but hopeful.

There are many factors that influence when someone can put weight on the leg after a tibial plateau fracture. Good luck!

I broke my TBP in July 2023 it has been such a struggle. I have 3 plates and 18 screws in my leg. It’s been 10 months I got pretty good range of motion but going up and down steps is still very hard and now one has been talking about the muscle spasm and nerve damage.

Two years ago, I was run over at the dog park by 2 big dogs. They literally shoulder slammed the side of my knee. I ended up having a plate put in, as my fracture had started to travel. Once inside, my surgeon had to drain a lot of blood out. I also had a complex tear of the meniscus. I went through 7 mths. of P.T. Today, I work out at the gym 5 days a week. My knee is quite strong, but I do have arthritis. I am considering getting a steroid injection and then the gel injected. The pain and swelling get pretty bothersome. Btw- I was 63 at the time of the injury. I don't know my T score yet.

About 14 years ago I would say I was playing in a volleyball tournament at work. I took a really good swan dive, but just put it that way as I was going for the ball and as I did that I injured my knee pretty good and hard however, thankfully no surgery but it was still tibial plateau fracture, howeverI do have a lot of times with the weather and I’m on it a lot, but it seems like anymore. It does tend to hurt a bit more.

I’m going through a tibial Plato fracture. Doc said it’s right in line so in great spot. No surgery required. I go back for my 2nd. Xray soon and I hope they say I’m still good to just let it heal up. I don’t have much pain only when I put pressure on it. Other than that I’m not taking any meds for pain. Recovery is still 8-10 wks then pt for 2-4
