I think the key quote for the step-siblings thing is "and you were barely even married to his mother." I've always assumed it was one of those handful of months marriages, so they never really bonded as siblings.
I think it's didn't even last a year lol
@Ks It's actually bassed off the classic novel 'Emma' where (due to the time period in which it wasn't seen as inappropriate) the main characters that fall in love with eachother had an even weirder family connection & an even bigger age gap then in this movie.
Someone who actually picked up on that...every reactor, as well as other people, seem to only want to concentrate on the "step sibling" phrase and not the part that it was extremely short term. I'm sure he was barely around during that time because of school. They've obviously never experienced spending time around each other for a long stretch of time. It's so aggravating when people hear what they want to and decide to disregard anything else that's already gone on earlier in a movie that already showed the context of a situation.
Aside from that, you can't really call a comedy problematic anyway.
@Ks if he was just her father's employee, he wouldn't spend so much time at the house with her and she wouldn't have called him for help.

Also, I personally don't have any problems with this ex step bro thing. I honestly don't understand why it creeps people out so much. It's not like they are related or grew up together.
As I think others have said this is a modern adaptation of Jane Austen'a Emma. Cher is Emma who ends up with her neighbor and family friend who is 16 years older to her (and whose younger brother is married to her older sister), so these kinds of romantic relationships that now seem a little creepy are hard in modern adaptations. But overall this is actually a very good modernization of the novel and characters.
I'm also gonna make myself very unpopular here and say that 16 and 19 isn't too bad of an age difference. I know in the US it's also a legal thing, as opposed to other countries, but just on an ethical level, I'm okay with it.
They also try to minimize it. It's very much in passing, but they were only step-siblings for a year when she was 10 and he was 12 (it's in the novelization). Cher's dad just kept in touch with Josh because he needed a male figure in his life. Cher hasn't really seen Josh since then, until he starts going to UCLA.

@@ang3l724 I get what you're saying, but I honestly just gotta disagree. In my experience 16 year old me and 19 year old me are much closer to one another than for example 19 year old me and 22 year old me.
What I'm saying is that everyone evolves differently and blanket statements like that aren't accurate, at least not all the time.
Now, if he were in his mid twenties, I'd say you have a point, but 3 years isn't really a huge developmental difference, imo.

It’s funny that everyone is so freaked out about the step-brother thing lol. “Gross, no, I can’t date this guy bc my dad was married to his mum for a few months six years ago 🤮” what?? There’s no blood relation and no reason you’d see them as your sibling-it’s just some kid you could have met through any other circumstance. Idk, I personally don’t find it weird. It’s no different than the child of a family friend at that point.
yeah it's like freaking out about someone dating their classmate. a classmate is even more of a sibling depending on how long they were in the same class
Eventually, people will only be allowed to date people they haven't met, I guess. I saw someone posting that a TV show couple could never get back together now because her mother had married his uncle. If someone's relative marries my relative, it has no affect on what I do with that someone. They didn't grow up as siblings; it's meaningless.

Also, so yes, they were step siblings, but their parents divorced a long time ago and were only married a short time (still weird, but not to the degree you were saying). Also you pointing out that she's 16 and he's at least 18...So? A 2 year age difference is neither weird nor uncommon at that age. Even if he's 19, that's a 3 year difference, and there are plenty of high school seniors dating high school freshmen.

agree, in my country the age gap is not such a problem, for example, my friend has met her future husband, when she was 16 and he was 20, and it is considered normal, when the guy is older
Lowkey the point of the movie is that Cher is actually super smart and that while she’s clueless, people also judge her a lot without knowing her. Her friends are a lil superficial but they are good people and good friends. I feel like parts of the point of the movie flew passed ur head😭

a lot of the comments have already pointed out that this is an Emma adaptation, so you should definitely check out one of the straight adaptations of the novel! my favorite by far is the 2020 version with Anya Taylor-joy as Emma, but the 1996 version with Gwyneth Paltrow is pretty good as well. you could even turn it into a Jane Austen-themed viewing and check out pride and prejudice (2005), sense and sensibility (1995), persuasion (2007) and so on, or the more crazy adaptations like pride and prejudice and zombies
Yes, definitely, you should watch _Emma!_ There are several good versions!

Today, Clueless might seem a bit problematic but it is still pretty enjoyable movie . Also it is based on the novel by Jane Austin - Emma - which was written in 1800s so yeah, some concepts may seem a bit "dated". You should watch Emma now - ideally the version with Anya Taylor Joy.

My friend Caitlin died in 2017 at age 22 from that and colon cleaning routine. Not sure exactly how but yes it's a real thing. She has just graduated from that France chef school cordein blue or something and moved from Houston to Austin to start her chef adventure. Really miss her she didn't even get a chance to live what she learned in chef school. 💔

This is my favorite comfort movie. I first saw it as a kid on TV sometime around 99-01. Even with it's problematic moments, I think it still holds up well. RIP Brittany Murphy 💕

Well, it's REALLY problematic but it's an adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma so it's really dificult to adapt some relationship into a teen movie in the 90's (and in the Austen's novel, Josh/Mr. Knightley is 16 years older then her AND is friend of her father, so this is much less problematic)

He's not a friend of her father's. He's a friend of the family cause his brother is married to her sister. It's not weird or problematic in the book or movie. That age gap was not a big deal when the book was written/set.

I've never heard the expression "Cake Boy" before or since this movie came out. It still confuses me.
I don’t know the origins of the phrase but I know Sir Mix-a-Lot had a song called Cake Boy in 1992. Like most people I only remember Baby Got Back from him. But from what I read on Urban Dictionary it wasn’t necessarily a slang term for homosexual males but more for what we now call metrosexuals. Buttercup boy is another similar term from the early 90’s.

Yes! I love Clueless and the tv show was one of my favorites growing up (every night I’d watch Sabrina, Sister Sister and Clueless). The only thing that I didn’t like is that for some reason they removed the character of Christian from the tv show…. I wonder why

Potentially unpopular opinion. You can't apply today's standards on artistic works of the past.
It would be pretty ignorant to call every work of Shakespeare problematic. Right? Or to toss out all of classic literature for their problematic sexism, racism, lack of diversit, homophobia, transphobia, etc?
The 90's was 3 decades ago and at the time this film was released these ideas weren't considered by the public to be hugely upsetting, so take them with a grain of salt and just understand that society changes as knew generations are born and society experiences cultural shifts.
Also I don't see a problem with someone dating a person they aren't related to, just because their parents were married for a short time. Especially when both parents have had several marriages.
Well, yes and no.
I agree that it would be an overreaction and over the top to throw out all past art because they had some aspect to them that would be considered morally problematic by today's standards. But I don't think it's a problem to call out past works for certain things that make them problematic or to call out their more problematic aspects.
In these matters, I think we are doing just fine so as long as we acknowledge what is problematic and what isn't, appreciate the parts that are still good or still can hold up, and are understanding that no one or work of art they produce will ever be able to last through the ages having attained absolute moral perfection that makes them wholly immune to any valid criticism or critique ever at any time.
Part of me wants to agree with you when it's a matter of subjective tastes. But I definitely DON'T agree in other matters like this. That would be like saying "Song Of The South", "Coal Black And De Sebben Dwarves" and "Bugs Bunny Nips The Nips" would be fine with showing on Cartoon Network at 2:30 pm with no disclaimer because "we can't judge them by today's standards". We can and SHOULD.
But yet I also believe these have a place on adult DVD and/or Blu-Ray for serious collectors with a disclaimer because it's important to preserve problematic media from our culture because we can't and shouldn't pretend that they don't exist or don't have artistic merit. But we VERY MUCH should judge works on a basic level for today's standards. We just also need to recognize a time and place for them to be studied and looked at in the proper context, while admitting they are a time capsule of the past that does not hold up today.
@@the-NightStar I understand what you are getting at. And for the most part I agree. My concern is that these books, movies, and works of art are honest reflections of life in the time they were created. Even star wars, a science fiction piece screams 70's. (Because of the language and hair styles and special effects) We get insight into what kind of casting was done, what kind of relationships were allowed. It becomes more than entertainment.
I think as long as the film is viewed with a warning label. EVERYONE. Nt just adults should be aware from an early age the difference between older forms of media and what they have now. Peter Pan is soooooo problematic and cringey. But if you wait until you are a stubborn adult to even start to view this stuff and understand the problems of history, it is doomed to be repeated by radical groups and susceptible people lacking context.
I think the issue I have is on the word judgement, and the label of problematic. I don't think it is fair to judge older works by today's standards because they were working under a different set of societal pressure and norms. They did they best they could in their own context and may not ever exist if they had attempted to conform to societal standards that don't exist yet. Secondly, calling it problematic seems like something that should be reserved for people, companies, and media of today. Those people should understand what standards society is operating under and are making the choice to be contrary. Problematic seems like an active label, for something that is currently influencing people today. Not a cultural phenomenon of 3 decades ago.

I don’t have issue with the previous step sibling thing. The age of consent in most states is 16 (tho CA is 18), but even back in the day when this movie came out, I thought the age gap was a problematic. They could have maybe have made Cher a HS senior who was late to take her drivers test

It's not weird. They're parents aren't currently together and apparently it was for a very short time. Also, it seems like it was recently so it's not like they were children or anything.
They were trying to find a "current day" version of her sister being married to his brother (the whole almost family but not really) and I think this is a reasonable version that really makes sense in this universe.
Clueless is an adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma (just like West Side Story was a remake of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet). If you read Emma, you’d know that Josh’ role is a takeoff on the fact that Emma’s older sister married Josh’ younger brother. So, again, while there’s no “relationship “ between the two, & they are referred to by others as brother and sister (brother-in-law, sister-in-law) AND there’s a huge age gap between the two (I believe about 16 years, IIRC) the family relationship merely gives them more of an opportunity to mingle w one another than would otherwise happen in the early 1800s.
Emma (like Cher) enjoys matchmaking, altho only the very first of her so-called efforts could be called a success. Her problem is that while she has very definite opinions, she is young & hasn’t seen much of the world. Basically, she thinks she knows best but it comes from a place of complete lack of knowledge combined w strong feelings of class consciousness.
So. The biggest problem you have w the film is basically the way they attempted to match up the “family tie” bet Cher & Josh. The writers do stress that the marriage was quite short, and thus the idea that either Cher or Josh would truly think of one another as “brother” & “sister” is totally off the table. The rest of Emma is rather convoluted but the basic premise of Elton always having a thing for Cher; Cher never realizing this and attempting to get her new friend involved w him instead; and Elton being a complete and utter shit follow directly from the book. As well as the mixup between who Cher believes her friend is interested in (bc of recent events) and the sudden awful realization - after the fact - that she actually loves Josh herself. The book is wonderful but if you prefer movies, they made a great movie w Gwyneth Paltrow in 1996 (‘97?) you can google - but it’s truly fun (albeit it doesn’t have the 1990s flair of Clueless. If you have ever enjoyed period pieces - or if your wife has had you watch period pieces with her, and you’ve thought: hey, not bad! this would be like that. OR you could watch the A&E version of Pride and Prejudice made right about the same time w Colin Firth and a woman and COLIN FIRTH (did I already mention him?) He plays the perfect Mr. Darcy. Like if you looked him up in Webster’s dictionary you’d see a (beautiful) picture of Colin Firth re Mr. Darcy. To the extent that when Bridget Jones Diary was made, Colin Firth got the role Mr. Darcy (albeit it wasn’t [exactly] the one from Jane Austen.)
Still and all, if you don’t wish to watch around 5-6 hours of P&P (the A&E adaptation is lovely but long), Bridget Jones Diary is a hoot and it’s only about (IDK) 90 minutes? That would be (sort of) in a vague way… similar to a remake of P&P but not nearly to the extent all the other movies adhere to the plot lines of the earlier films or books. And it’s amusing and fun and filled w Britishisms (which I love) and Hugh Grant is also in the film, not stuttering nearly as much as he normally does, and without saying anything re how the story ends, the credits scene is one of my favorite end scenes I’ve ever watched in any movie ever. And I not only like films of today, films from the 1980s and ‘90s but old films from as far back as the 1930s. So I feel I have a fairly good basis upon which to make that statement. (Altho, admittedly, I haven’t watched many hard core thrillers. Bc our country is scary enough and I occasionally wish to sleep.)

I mean, they clearly didn't grow up together as siblings or develop a relationship AS siblings, so I see no issue with them falling in love and ending up together. Hell, even if their parents had still been together I would have been fine with it because they are not actually siblings. And a few years age gap isn't a huge deal either I feel. It wasn't a big enough gap to make me uncomfortable in this case at least.
I always thought this movie was fun either way. The step-brother thing wasn't necessary, but it didn't really bother me, either. She mentions earlier in the movie that her dad was "barely married to his mother", which indicates a very short relationship. I think a brotherly/sisterly bond relationship is very different from the kind of relationship that is displayed. I can also understand why the idea might ick some people out, as well, though.
Personally, I just don't think this is a movie to think too deeply about. It's just a fun romcom ^.^
Also, watching your emotional rollercoaster of a reaction was hilarious. "What is happening in this movie?!" xD
