    Wolf Tooth Road Link is an amazing innovation. I'm 71 years old and still like to take my 1973 Peugeot PX10 out on the road every once in awhile.
    I just can't push a 42 X 26 up the 8% grades anymore and I refuse to get rid of the beautiful Stronglight 93 crankset. I put a Road Link on the frame, and using an the old Campy Record derailleur, I run a 11-36 9speed cassette. Works like a charm.

    I putt a Wolf Tooth Road link on with a long cage ultegra derailleur. I now have a 11-42 cassette on the rear, and a compact on the front and can manage the Oman hills reasonably well.

    Bought one of those hanger extenders for my Trek with Sram short cage and it is spot on - much cheaper than a new derailleur and other than a slight tweak to the derailleur alignment it's given me 3 years so far of hassle free use. Only went from 28T to 30T on a compact but clearly there's scope for more.

    In response to the tubeless question. I have Dynaplug plugs for bicycle tyres. They seal with the tyre when inserted. They also come in 2 different size plugs. Some of the kits even come with a small knife to cut the excess off.

    • @dougparent6569
      @dougparent6569 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same here. I carry a Dynaplug, a couple of spare plugs and a pump. That's it. If I can't solve a puncture with that I'll just call an Uber. No Ubers called yet.

  • @originalkontrol

    As for catastrophic tubeless punctures, another great option I was told about when I had my first tire get sliced open was to bring a dollar bill with you. You fold the bill over a couple of times and use it on the inside of the tire between the tube and tire. The moisture from the sealant helps it stick in place. It works great for large slices up to a centimeter or so. I’m not sure how sturdy British paper money is, but American bills are quite tear resistant and ideal for covering large tears/cuts without letting a tube squeeze out through the hole. You guys rock, keep up all there great vids! My friends and I can’t get enough!

    What I've noticed when customers have me install these extensions the derailleur will not shift very accurately on the whole range. It either works great on all the low climbing gears or the high gears, but not both.

    Running tubeless. Park Tools TL 6.2 tire levers are a must in your repair kit, a proper size tube and a frame pump and CO2. Plugs are nice if your on a mountain bike however on road bikes they aren't as useful, your better off with a tube if the sealant don't seal it. Thing to do also is maybe have a small piece of old inner tube to make a boot if needed.

    #askgcntech I put my bike on my smart trainer, when riding sometimes - when I go hard and specifically out of the saddle, the headset bearing starts to make a disconcerting knocking/clicking noise which I can't, despite my best efforts, get rid of. The bike is a Canyon Ultimate CF-SL. Way to go Olly. Thanks James

    regarding the first topic of the video I have two questions. First: aret there derailleur hanger extenders suitable for a Shimano Ultegra 11S SG? I heard something in the case of Wolf Tooth that it was not suitable for that model (RD-R8000-GS). And other solution I have been thinking of for the problem of pairing this rear derrailleur with a 11x40 cassette is to change the cage of the derrailleur. But the Ultegra only is manufactured with SS and SG cages. Would it be possible to install in the ultegra derrailleur a SGS cage from another Shimano model?. Please, advise my best option.

    For BB30 removal I use Park Tool BBT-30.4. It's gentle on the bearings so you can reuse them. Also, that old "head set type" demonstrated here might press on the inner circlip on BB30 possibly. Bearings go out if I want to mess with the internal gear cables, for better access.

    Also if you can throw a clean chain on there, as of now I’m using a towel to collect all the grease and crap that falls off the chain during my zwifting. I’m on a transition scout hooked up to a cycleops hammer2.

    On Friday I had my MTB running a SRAM Eagle 1 x 12 ( 32t front cog; 11-50 cassette ) converted to a 2 x 12 setup. The lbs mecahnic ( who generally prefers SRAM to Shimano ) did the conversion by adding Shimano components, viz. FD, front shifter and changed the SRAM 1x crankset to a Shimano 2x 36-26 ( 12s ) crankset. Works like a charm except I can't ride big-big. Would adding a goat link allow me to ride bib-big if it became necessary?

  • @888jhs

    I recently changed to an 11-32 cassette and the bike shop installed an extender. I notice some of the shifting was not as smooth as before with the 11-27 and no extender. I was introduced to an alternative - the oversized jockey wheels. I bought a carbon replacement part on Ali-Express for my particular Dure-Ace derailleur and installed it in my bike. I did not need to change the length of the chain. The benefit is that the larger cassette can be accommodated but the distance between the jockey wheels and the cassette is not increased so shifting is supposedly less affected. The shifting, particularly in the mid range was improved over the extender but maybe still not as good as the original. I can’t add a picture here but will upload so you can see what I installed and how it looks on the bike. Perhaps you could check it out and let us know what you think as an alternative.

    At 0:44. Sram Force 10spd Short Cage derailleur www.modernbike.com/sram-force-10-speed-rear-road-derailleur looks like max 33T Chain Wrap Capacity, which is exactly what user "kamatiker" has on his Canyon. Chainset 50-34=16T plus cassette 28-11=17T is total 16+17=33T. Swapping to a larger cassette 36-12=24T will bring the total to 40T. Which is 7T too many for the short cage to maintain proper chain tension. Nothing a WolfTooth RoadLink will solve. Get a new derailleur with longer cage! Probably the same price as a WT RoadLink.

    #ASKGCNTECH: I recently removed my rear sprocket to give it a good cleaning. Upon remounting it and applying some lubricant, I went on my first ride and noticed a jingling sound from the sprocket. Upon checking the various gears, I noticed that there was a little play with the single gears. I used a chain whip and the Shimano tool to tighten up the locking ring, and the ring is quite tight. Is it okay that the individual gear rings have a little play? Or, should they be snug up against the spacers between them? Could the spacers be worn such that they need replaced? I don't recall this noise prior to the cleaning.

    I think I must have short toes because I use Look Keo pedals and I can never get the cleat forward enough. I have tried a few makes of shoes and I find Diadora shoes are drilled maybe a few millimetres nearer the toe than others. #askGCNtech Debating upgrading my bike to Di2 & adding clip on bars to make it a TT bike as well as a road bike. Is the process of plugging & unplugging the Di2 shifters at the end of the aero bars into the 5 port under-the-stem junction box an easy thing? I've been told I would need to reprogram the Di2 every time I plug & unplug but would like verification from you guys! Is there anything I need to know about using Di2 in this way? I want to get into TTs and adding Di2 & aerobars to my road setup is a lot cheaper than buying a full TT bike.

      Short answer is nothing to worry about. If by chance you ever do find the loss of your easiest gear troublesome on a particular ride, you can either turn down the resistance (see zwift.com/eu/video/how-to-cycling/adjust-smart-trainer-difficulty ) or use it for motivation to push a wee bit harder :)

    #AskGCNTech I am looking to upgrade my bike and training with a power meter. I currently have a full Shimano Claris groupset, would I be able to replace my crankset with either ultegra or dura ace, without having to change anything else?

    • @nikveldkamp8630
      @nikveldkamp8630 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can. According to bike.shimano.com , Claris is spec'd with the Tiagra BB, which is a Hollowtech-II type as well as105, Ultegra and Dura-Ace. No need to change the left STI for the FD. (Originally I even started out 2x8 on a flat bar with a 3x shifter before realising I preferred riding in the drops than on bar ends) I changed my FD with the cranks as I switched from 3x to 2x, so I can't tell if the 2x Claris FD would work. (Any official advice would most surely be not to mix and match - no surprises there to be expected - I've heard it so often, though so much more worked for me.) But for fun's sake, I'd tech trial first before swapping the FD as well. BUT the tighter tolerances of the 11speed system required a slim 11s chain in the front. Works like charm with my 8s in the back! (And I like the look of the hollow bolts in Dura-Ace chain ;)
      Enjoy the DIY time! Park tool videos will most surely help.
      P.S.
      My next personal upgrade will be 2x11s, but also hydraulic (instead of my mechanical) discs as well since I'll have to swap at least the right STI, I'm going for the pair and hydr. calipers. (Imo 11s is worth the trouble: Finer gear steps AND more cassette options, esp. with longer cages or hanger extender. MTB RD works with a STI lever using gadgets like the Wolftooth Tanpan.)

    #AskGCNTech HI! I'm looking to upgrade the stock wheels that came with my specialized allez. Looking at the vision team 30 (you used on the cheap to superbike) and team 35, they both weight about the same and cost about the same, the difference is mainly in the dimensions. The t30s have 25mm outer width and t35s have 21mm. What are the pros and cons of wider/skinnier rims? Im going to be running some 28c tubeless tires for the extra comfort, so can it even be more aerodynamic to have the wider but shallower rims as it makes smoother transition between rim and tire? Thanks.

      Why go down to 26 inch wheels when 650b would be small enough? I converted a 700c disc brake cyclocross bike, whose rims wouldn't take a tire wider than 28 mm, into a gravel bike with 650b wheels that could take 38 mm tires.

    Good evening!
    I recently purchased a set of Fulcrum Racing 7 DB as a second wheelset to put on my 2016 Trek Crockett. After fitting my Avid BB5 brake calipers to the new wheels, I find myself in a pickle. My old Bontrager TLR front wheel (front wheel only, rear wheel is ok) disc rotor is not fitting anymore in the caliper. Are there any shims or spacers I can use on the centerlock hub to space out the rotor? Should I try to use a centerlock to 6 bolt adapter to use 6 bolt disc spacers? Any other tips other than refitting the caliper every time I want to swap wheels?
    Thank you!

      Probably all you need to do is loosen the bolts holding the calipers to the fork and chainstays. Then, pull the brake levers and the calipers will likely center. Tighten while holding the brake lever. I have to do this when swapping wheels.

    my hanger is straight,
    RD is fine and set up correctly, Cassette and chain is fine,
    cables still smooth,
    the brifter feels smooth,
    but most of the time i need a few mm extra pull on the lever after the click when go up the cassette so it went in perfectly..
    i try play around with tension but the symptoms that i got are just like a bent hanger (either easy up late down or vice versa),
    the shop guy checked with paktool DAG and find no problem.
    i run sora 3400 brifter with acera shadow rd, this also happened with sora rd and feel little bit worse than acera shadow.
    any idea?

    I'd love to see an episode dedicated to heavy riders. I'm 320 lbs and routinely do century rides on a cafe bike ... because I know it won't break under strain. I fear going with lighter or more efficient bikes because I don't know what will support me.

      I would love to see an episode focused on the bigger guys and gals as well. I used to weigh in at 360lbs, got a touring bike with a some very strong wheels. Am now 260lbs thanks to a few good decisions in life and the bike as well. Am interested in moving towards more endurance road bikes as I get a bit lighter, which was the reason for my question. Know that most frames support my weight as is, but the weak point will probably be the wheel hence the question. I of course ride tubeless to avoid pinch flats and fit a 29"x2.2" tire on my touring rig but longing for a bit more speed.
      I would very much appreciate an episode focused on larger cyclists. Clothing choices, bike fit, proper equipment to use for a stronger bike etc...

    #askgcntech...do road shoes come with cleats...which ones to buy...btwin 500 or shimano rc7(for double the price) and..tyres on Triban RC 520... Are they tubeless... because the wheels are and in their conversation kit..they don't mention tyre...so??Also, I have a leak where the valve is glued to the inner tube...how can I fix it..

    • @natgeoba7377
      @natgeoba7377 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      1)go for the Shimano shoes (speaking of experience)
      2) the tires arent tubeless. But the rims are. Youll just need tires, valves and sealant
      3) just put a regular patch on the leak and it should fix it. If it's completely against the valve, change the tube

    #AskGCNTech my secondhand 2003 Trek 5200 doesn’t have a derailleur hanger. It mounts directly to the metal bracket that the wheel/frame mounts to. Should a hanger be added as a sacrificial bracket to avoid the frame or derailleur being damaged?

    @gcntech How do i convert a rear thru-axle hub to 9mm quick release? The issue I'm running into is the width. They sell those adapters you just run through it but the issue is that the width with the george-endcappy's of the hubs are too wide for a 9mm quick-release frame. What the heck does a guy do? Where do i get them sweet sweet parts to make this happen? (without just grinding it down.. (done that once :-/ )) FYI, I have threaded axles on a set of "OVAL" wheels. www.ovalconcepts.com/road/wheels/928-disc-wheelset

    I got some rollers for the covid lockdown but after ‘mastering’ them they shredded my nearly new gatorskin 25c tyres after just an hour - is this inevitable, do you have any hacks or do I need to abandon them and get a turbo trainer?

    • @globalwarsrocks
      @globalwarsrocks 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'd recommend putting on some older and worn tires if riding on rollers. You can also buy rollerspecific tires (kinda cheap, +-20 euros I think), that are a lot more durable for rollers (don't ride them on the road though) and will save you quite a bit in the long run. it is inevitable because rollers wear out your tires a lot more because of higher friction, heat and a very small contactpoint. :)

    Hi guys, loving the show, keep up the good work and all of that. I have an early 90' CILO SWISS and I'm doing a resto/mod on it, but I'm on a budget. It is a mish mash of parts but mostly Shimano 105 from the 5700 series.I was thinking of using some Microshift R10 shifters. Do you have any info on the build quality? I've been finding some oposit comments on the net. Thanks in advance! Branko from Zagreb, Croatia :)
