    New to cycling last year and so thankful I stumbled upon your brand and channel. Now have a handful of your products and a happy user of waxed chain now. Love it. Been intrigued by these so glad you did video explaining it. And now I know im no world tour rider and never will be. But ordered one of these truly to continue supporting your brand and the marginal benefits it provides. hooray for quick and quiet shifting. Thank you for all you do for the cycling community.

    Josh, you are killing me. Every single time I hear you talk about something new from Silca I feel an overwhelming compulsion to buy it. I just ordered the mech hanger for my Tarmac SL7 simply because you told me to. And, I have no doubt that the shifting on my Di2 waxed chain drive train will go from perfect to ultra perfect. Thanks and keep up the amazing work.

    Hey Josh, i am a fan of your work let me say. But, some of your figures have me scratching for the BS meter: at 4:22 the Ti version shows to be 5x stiffer for the same geometry as Aluminium. At absolute best SLM Ti is 1.5x stiffer and Aluminium (105 GPa vs 70GPa), with the same geometry. So how do you come up with that? At 10:20 you say you improve stiffness 6-12x over an Alu hanger. IF you want the ultimate in stiffness you are better off going with steel and in like for like geometry you're only going to get 3x. Please let me know if I have missed something!

      Thanks for fact checking this shill man

    • @SILCAVelo
      @SILCAVelo  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @PeakTorque You are correct for same geometry, which is why we aren't in any way using same geometry (edit from rereading your comment: the Al hanger has an I-beam type cross-section in the model, it just isn't super visible at that angle). You have to account for material removal done to AL hangers to reduce weight, both stock and aftermarket AL hanger designs pretty much all use geometry cast into the part or post machined into the part to reduce weight, this means all material is removed from the outer surfaces of the part, where the material is needed most for both strength and stiffness. With 3DP, we can maintain material at the outermost surfaces of the part, and use infil to strategically move stress through and across the part in ways that are not possible with CNC machined parts.
      You are also 100% correct that a solid steel hanger plate hanger would be the stiffest option, but at 2-3x the weight of the original AL hanger I don't see too many people actually buying or using one of those, particularly as they wouldn't be cheap either. Lastly, we could have made our numbers look even better if we compared to minimalist CNC hangers like those from Sigeyi or Frames and Gear.. those things are shockingly flexible in both lateral bending and torsion and prone to failure due to excessive machining to hit weight targets, but we have not engaged that topic here at all.

    • @SILCAVelo
      @SILCAVelo  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      While the statistics cited are accurate, the assumptions made about everything else were not, sorry. (edit: realizing @peaktorque assumed equal geometry in the FEA which is not the case, Al hanger was relieved into I-beam type section to match original stock hanger for that model, while Ti hanger in model was hollow.

    • @PeakTorque
      @PeakTorque 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      OK, interesting! Thank you for replying quickly. The FEA models look more or less like for like but yes could be pocketed behind.@@SILCAVelo

    • @PeakTorque
      @PeakTorque 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Working through the numbers out loud. To achieve a 10x increase in bending stiffness (EI) we have a 1.5x increase in material stiffness (E) and a 6.6x increase in geometry stiffness (I). My thru axle bikes' hangers are not pocketed so (I) cannot be increased so I'd be at 1.5x max. Still quite fancy trying one though 😀

  • @cipo36an203
    @cipo36an203 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    Josh, I think you took a shortcut saying that low grade, low stiffness aluminium alloy. All the aluminium aloys have mostly the same stiffness at 70GPA. I will agree they may be of low strength (reach plastic deformation with less stress, so permanently bent wisth greater ease).
    This being said I appreciate the analyse around the specific of a TA frame (versus the traditional rim brake frames)

  • @mortigard
    @mortigard 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    Not gonna lie, I was shocked at the price. A cheaper hanger is $20. A nicer one is $40. I figured a 3D ti hanger would cost $500. So yeah, $85 isn't a bad price for a pretty bling product that actually performs a function. I've wasted a lot more money on a lot less useful products on a bike.

    Most bike frames are not perfectly aligned with the cassette. I always have to align the derailleur hanger with any new bike I build. How do I accomplish a slight alignment problem with a Ti UDH?

    • @Adonis-qj1nq

      Can’t speak to SRAM, but you can trim the derailleur alignment in the E-Tube app, you can also adjust the cassette alightment using small shims behind the casstee on the free hub. I needed shims to get my 2 wheel sets and trainer to match each other, I then used the E-Tube app to finalize the derailleur. I can now switch between them all without having to re-tune the derailleur each time. Presumably SRAM has a similar app?

    • @SILCAVelo
      @SILCAVelo  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      Couple of things.. so these can be bent without breaking for alignment purposes, it just takes a lot of force, but secondly, the problem is no longer with the frame/hanger.. it's the hanger to hub interface. Like I say in the video, the frame is not just there to be squished in between the hub/hanger and the nut or some version of that.. if the hanger is perpendicular to the hub spindle, nothing else matters. This is a far cry from the QR days where typically the hanger was on the other side of the frame from the hub spindle (which was tiny) and it was all just pinched together with a spindly little rod.

      Pinarello direct mount from Pinarello inverts the positions of the 2 dropout pieces, requiring both to change if you go from standard to direct. Our hanger uses the outer plate from the standard hanger and replaces only the inner piece so that you don't have to replace both. Hope that makes sense? • @SILCAVelo
      @SILCAVelo  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      The hanger is designed to fail before derailleur or frame are damaged, but of course it just so depends on the actual situation/condition.. something like a stick in the derailleur, or a very hard perpendicular impact on derailleur itself still has the capacity to pretty much break everything.. but for the most common impacts, laying the bike down on the drive side, derailleur impacted by a wheel or foot from another rider, minor crashing, it should be fine.

    There have been a couple instances where my bike was stationary and fell over on its drive side. The stock derailleur hanger got bent and I had to pay $20 at my LBS to get it realigned. Would the same thing happen with a 3DP Ti derailleur hanger?

    • @SILCAVelo
      @SILCAVelo  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Totally depends on how hard it landed.. 95% of the time, it wouldn't bend as it's much stronger and stiffer than aluminum, but if the bike fell in a way that it hit purely on the derailleur at a certain level, then the hanger will break and need to be replaced. It's sort of an odds game, but most aluminum hangers bend at a low percentage of the impact that will damage other parts of the bike, say 20%.. while we don't bend or see damage at those loads, but then break when you get to ~90% of the load that will damage other parts of the bike in order to protect those other (more expensive) parts.

    Another great Silca engineered, MG product, Josh. You must already know that your customers and audience await every single new Silca product release. It gets all of us with open-minds thinking more about other MG opportunities, too. 🤔
    I get why you suggest these are only for thru-axle bikes! 👍
    However, already I can hear my Cervelo RCA frameset screaming out loud, 😱 "What about me?" (🎶), unlike my R5 & RS framesets that don't care nearly so much. 🥱
    You may have heard a classic Aussie song with this title above. My wallet also shouts out similar things. Potentially catastrophic events are always a threat to bikes ridden in the real world. Sticks and crashes don't care what brake system you're riding with, they can just happen to any of us. Even you said that non thru-axled frames are more vulnerable to such damage.🤪
    There are a few (possibly many) brands that have used the exact same hanger over many generations of their frames. Will you re-consider making hangers for some of the perhaps 'more collectable' framesets? Some of us are not yet interested in, or able to, consider thru-axles.
    Didn't you wanna help us keep these bikes out of landfill, too? 😭This will become especially so as original spec hangers become less accessible as spares. It's not like I'm asking you to make a taller sock for those of us who are, in fact, taller, is it? 😇 🙏

      So what I'm seeing is: compared to the chart at 14:06, the website high-level lists only the direct mount derailleurs on the hanger page. So if you go to the 105 product page, that's for a direct mount Shimano hanger. But then if you click the 'Sram' option (and if the pic change is correct), you're now buying the 205 hanger, which is equivalent to the stock hanger the Crux comes with. It's kind of confusing, hopefully Silca can confirm (or correct) what I wrote haha.

    • @CatManDoSocial

      @@janeblogs324Haha. A stick got caught in my rear spokes in front of the RD. As the wheel continued to spin, it pulled the RD up and around, ripping the RD/hanger off but not before severely damaging the carbon on the inside of the dropout. It destroyed the RD, hanger, and chain and broke off a tooth on my X01 cassette in the process. So a stick cost me a small fortune in a fraction of a second.

    A little UX feedback from a UX research professional - (1) the selection on the product details page is confusing. First, "Step 1" is less obvious than the text form, which has a very high "type here" affordance; in other words, the selection is too subtle. Second, "Step 1" starts with the UDH compatible piping which is far less obvious knowledge than "select brand". Recommendations (A) replace piping architecture on PDP with a simple drop down like you see in the "no" piping path. (2) Move/gate the "what's next" form after a selection of "other" in the brand dropdown selector. I suspect this will help a little with conversions - at least a little.

    If you were to choose in a fall what to damage, what would that be, the frame, the hanger, the derailleur? Congrats! With your ever hard titanium derailleur you will damage your derailleur, or your frame, or both, but you will save that hanger!

    Why can't there be a set of standard derailleur hangers? I feel I have to buy numerous spare hangers in case the company I bought the frame from stops making them. I crash frequently and use up a couple every year or so on my rim brake bike. I just bought a brand new disc brake bike. I haven't built it yet. It is my first disc brake bike. Never even ridden one before. Does this mean I don't have to worry about this anymore? Are disc brake bike hangers all the same? News to me if so.

      No standard yet.. SRAM is trying with the UDH, but only a handful of brands have adopted it yet.. fingers crossed that we'll find some sanity here and the industry can converge on a solution for once!!

    But it really can be a little wasteful? Seem like hangars that have long attachments like the silca 107 shimano vs the 107 sram for the madone '22 this will be more pronounced. If you shorten up the arm the stiffness will go up and will be far less impactful in the above situation? Be curious to see actual deflection difference in the 107 sram vs shimano and also compared to the stock ones.
    I did buy the sram 107 but question my sanity!

    • @janeblogs324

      1980s-90s never had an issue with stiff steel hangers. Shimano Derailleurs are only $100 with a clutch so they are as cheap as this hanger

    I’ll take anything Silca puts out with data and pro/tour-tested results. Josh will explain things to bring it into perspective without marketing jargon IMO. Give him a break… they have overhead to account for, possible silent investors they have to satisfy as well as respecting the original family who owned/started the brand. I don’t know, but he does provide data to the gospel and I’ll try if it sounds good. It also helps he’s been in the science end of the industry for sometime prior to Silca.
    To date, I’ve purchased the Ti bottle cages (several), tattico mini pump, chain wax in the bag (first release,) first release of secret chain lube sauce (when it had WAY more tungsten in it than in recent years), thick ass bar tape, tire levers (great btw), gear wipes, T-ratchet set, Hirobel clamp and the Seat Capsule. Call me a bike junkie (which I’m not as I have other hobbies), but I’ve seen and bought enough junk over the years to filter quality products. I’m happy with Silca overall.
    Just my 2 drops of tungsten disulfide.
