My grandfather tried to enlist during WWI, but he was refused two times being too young and too skinny. The third time, the officer said "you really want to go? Then go!". He was 17 years old and was sent in Verdun during the battle...he was wounded, not too seriously, was sent back to the front and finished the war safely. Thankfully, my grandfather died before hearing from these computer warriors, maybe as young as he was when he enlisted, calling the French soldiers "coward"... Anyway, as a French person, I thank you for this video, if it can help some people to learn to show respect for fallen soldiers and civilians from all countries...
If I may ask, what was the first time you heard about this reputation? I know that it began way before the internet. Even my economics teacher back in high school, a man who by now would be in this mid-80s at least, made jokes about this.
@@theoutlook55 My grandfather died in 1983, at this time, I don't remember that French soldiers had this reputation (but I was a child). I know there was an episode of The Simpsons calling French people "cheese eating surrender monkeys" but few French people were aware of that. It really spread after that France refused in 2003 to vote a UN military action against Iraq to find the famous weapons of mass destruction, which were never found... The French minister of the Foreign Affairs did a speech at the UN telling that there were no evidence of such weapons existed and warned the government of the USA that there was a serious risk to destabilize Iraq and the whole area... After that, France was the target of a propaganda campaign telling French were cowards. At the same time, the internet was developed in a massive scale, so it was far easier to repeat over and over again the same stupid jokes...
@@MajorDenisBloodnok I do recall plenty of jokes at the expense of the French during and in the run-up to that war, precisely for the reason you mentioned here. Thank you for sharing your experiences.
I'm French and reading all those comments is heart-warming 🥰 Do not forget that main part of the French-bashing is due to the refusal to take part in 2003 Iraqi war (and at the end history has shown we were right on that point)
It's kinda interesting that Germany wasn't subjected to such a propaganda campaign from US media, even though we had the exact same outspoken stance against the invasion of Iraq.
@@faultier1158 Germany doesn't have a permanent seat to the UNO secrutity council. France was in position of power, and used it against US warmonging. Google reccords for the "French losers" meme clearly show the impact of the 2003 year.
@@christophedupire1162 I never doubted the connection between the anti-French propaganda campaign & the Iraq war. I was just wondering why Germany wasn't targeted in the same way. I’m Dutch and every time when I drive to work I pass a small monument dedicated the the French General Marcel Émile Deslaurens how gave his life in defense of his men. So to call the French cowards pisses me of.
So do I and I am French but what can we do ? My opinion is that it's because of politics that France Lost (very similaire to the situation now with Russia and Ukraine) ... for exemple, the concept of Blitz krieg was ... French ! (From De Gaulle himself) ... but that the pragmatic Germans that used it ...vs France...If France, invader Germany during Germany invade Poland : WE win ! But there were not plan !!! Counter ATTACK ... just because in those times, it was an another idéologic War in France (socialiste, communist VS far right ) ...many conscrits were communists and deserted ...the goovernement was against the Army (to nationalist) and French nationalist did not understand the evil of nazism... even some dutch collaborator themselves did not understand that.
Another interesting example is general Emile Lemmonier. He bravely refuse to capitulate to japan forces. He was decapitated but he refuse to surrender.
My great-grandfather was a radio operator during the Second World War. Then, when the French government surrendered, he left his job as a radio operator and became a member of the French Resistance, where he was in charge of encrypting and decrypting radio messages. He was captured, tortured and executed with his friends. Much later my family learned that he had never surrendered and had never spoken even under torture. He probably didn't personally play a major role in the end of the war but that doesn't stop me from being extremely proud to be of his blood although I unfortunately never knew him.
As a French, thank you for this documentary. I must specify that in 1940, it was not a capitulation but an armistice, the army refusing to be designated as guilty of the defeat.

The whole "french are cowards" thing wasn't even a thing after WW2. It mostly developed in 2003, as a way for the US to get revenge from France’s refusal to join the USA’s intervention against Iraq. The governement pushed for the thing to be common knowledge amongst uneducated americans.
100 cowards is the same as 1- that is to say those that die aiming to scare rather than to kill have died in treachery of the colors they meant to protect. so to antagonize Napoleon if the British marksman data from the colonial period is correct, it should be mourned where good men are found with their colors, because unlike in the imagination of the templar, no war being holy, in The Great Elephant's honor, it is not pies or moral to do anything less than, annihilate the enemy to extinction less they rise up again to cut your throught; to do less is a sin akin if not far worse than not being willing to kill your food to eat, if you cant kill the animal or plant you dont eat, if you dont kill the attacker you dont live. im not saying the french, templars, or anyone in particular is a coward, im simply offering food for thought on this perspective of these graves. the marksman data i refer to is i believe in the colonial period the British steaked sheets to the ground to measure the effectiveness of their vollies in practice and this was measured against in combat accuracy, from a military perspective the results are quite....unacceptable.

He never forgot that moment and had nightmare his entire life and cried each time he talked about it because he was a honest man who took no pleasure at killing people.
A similar thing could be said about Poland. Poland has a reputation of being bullied by its neighbors but it’s forgotten that Poland beat the Teutonic knights in battle, humiliated the Mongols in the third invasion, defended Europe against the Ottomans, invaded Rurik Russia and took Moscow, and even defeated the Soviet Union in the Polish Soviet war in the 1920s.
Difference is Poland and Lithuania were surrounded on all sides, undersupplied, etc, but still managed to win. Much more commendable how both nations continously defeated larger powers despite all odds
Finally someone said this. I'm a Pole, not a French and I'm sick of it. Especially with this talking about cowardness and 'betrayal' in WW2. You forgot to mention it in your video, because France is also known for 'betraying' Poland during WW2. In fact, France honored her alliance with Poland and declared war on Germany and launched an offensive in Saar region, but sadly our army was quickly defeated so it was no point to continue it and they returned to defending their land. Not to mention their sacrifice in WW1 when they were major contributor to the victory, and of course Napoleonic wars, when France brought whole Europe to its knees. Vive la France, our greatest ally
Thanks for your answer. So many people don't think about what the reason France couldnt help Poland. Like you said, the defeat of Poland was too fast cause Germans and Russians attacked it together but also britains who was allied with France didnt want to attack Germany cause Poland. They asked to France to let polish to germans and russians cause they feared about commercial block in England from German if France attacked Germany. It is a little more complicated. The main French army surrendered to the Wehrmacht after 5 weeks of fighting. Petain declared the puppet state Vichy France in the South. However, a Colonel De Gaulle organized the Free French Army with succes. And De Gaulle became history. So the French did everything in WW2, from collaborating with the nazi's to fighting nazi's.
Remember there's a reason why nations like France, the U.K., Russia, The U.S., China, and Germany had gained positions of strength in the world, don't be foolish to underestimate the power of these nations, or any other.
Yeah.... countries have their peaks and valleys. Russia can get scratched off that list for now haha without nukes they're a paper tiger, this war proves it
It reminds me of the "bataille du pont Saint-Louis", in 1940, where nine french soldiers held a bridge in a bunker against an army of about 5000 ennemies during 10 days. In the end, two french soldiers were slightly wounded. With the help of ally artillery, they managed to kill two hundred assailant and injure six hundred others. There's more to the story it's worth checking out.

What are you talking about? Jews enjoyed freedom in the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth. Gee why do you think Central and Eastern Europe had so many Jews. Also woman got the right to vote in Poland in 1918, in France it was not till 1945. And the concept of democracy existed in the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth long before France.
@wingedhussar5528 Key phrase in my comment "one of the first." I didn't say they were the first, but among the first. Jews were treated very well in Poland but France was one of the first countries to have religious freedom spelled out in their constitution.
@@EzraB123 Good points there but when it comes to an actual constitution this is a toss up as the French Declaration of the Rights of Man was written ins 1789 but it is technically not a constitution. In ww2 the main French army never surrendered but escaped, fought in Africa, fought in Italy, helped retake France, and drove into Germany with the allies. They then occupied 1/4 of Germany for 50 years.
still, it was the allies who liberated most of france, not the resistance itself sadly, unlike the warsaw uprising or the yugoslavian independence war still, the french resistance is somewhat recognized, probably even more then the yugoslavic and polish ones, but still i believe all resistances, no matter their progress deserve recognition
The French changed my mind after they rioted when the government used a loophole to exploit their retirement. Meanwhile here in the states, we happily get shafted for everything.
Well said. The US government has mastered the art of propaganda and keeping it's people comfortable and distracted enough to accept their slow decline into oppression. @aviator7479 that and the fact that some people on the internet make jokes about them surrendering and then they believe it but they are uneducated. Viva la France! 🇫🇷
Main reason is the Anti French propaganda, mainly from the US, that put France in shadow. You have decades of movies, games, books about courageous fight in ww2 about US, German, UK, Russians... Remember me now the last time a big war movie was about the French army in WW2 ? Nothing. And this work for war/battle before or after ww2. And that's not the lack of choice, like the battle of Stonne where 1 French B1 tank destroyed a column of ~12 panzer and take almost alone the city. If the tank was American, we could already have dozens of movie like Fury about this things. But no, nothing, and when they have interesting French story to tell, they remove the heroe a put an American (example: The last Samourai. Real story is based on a Frenchman, not an American)
@@mathieu722 The anti-french propaganda is due to the high number of germans in the american population. They hate France like their Germany germans cousins.

few addition to this video: - During WWII some french pilots went to the Soviet Union and fought alongside the soviets against Germany, today there is still a french fighter squadron named after these guys, the "Normandie-Niemen" (in reference to the region of Normandie of course and and Niemen in Russia.) - There was also french soldiers who went into Norway to fight against Germany alongside their Norwegian brother in arms. -The French Resistance held a crucial role in the success of the D-Day providing crucial information to the Allies about German positions, details about the topography of the land where the troops were supposed to land, sabotage operations against the German army, and many other things which helped the Allies. - In the Alps and in Southern France there was large pockets of resistance who fought against Germany and Italy. -If the French army didn't wasted all these resources to build the Maginot Line and built tanks and aircraft instead, The German would have suffered even more casualties, because french Dewoitine D-520 was a far better aircraft than the Bf-109 (and it's still true today, the Rafale is far better than the Eurofighter Typhoon :D )
Saying that the D-520 was far better than the BF-109 is a bit of a lie, the BF-109 was faster and had a better climbing rate while the D-520 was more agile, they were both of the same quality . The Rafale on the other is way better than the Typhoon, I hugely agree to that. And it's not really ressources that was needed to have more tank and planes, it was time,a war occuring 6 months or 1 year later wouls not had the same results. And communists sabotages did not really helped either.
One of my ancestors fought during the Normandy landings, with his resistance group, he attacked the Germans from behind and neutralized which bunker.. I'm quite sad to see that the movies, games, etc... do not show resistance, and make believe that the American soldiers bravely ran into the enemy defenses... I sincerely think that if my grandfather and his resistance group were not there.. either they would have lost a lot more, or the battle would have been lost.
And the Maginot line work. it was Belgium who refused to continue the line and therefore to fortify their defense, believing that Germany was not going to attack them because they were "neutral". Unfortunately, history proves that this decision condemns Europe.
@@YK36Deadezio Belgium also believed it in 1914 and were invaded anyway (put quite a fight though...). I find it weird they would invoke the same reason.

As a French, I can accept all the stereotypes - 'arrogant', 'smelly', etc. - Why not, there's probably some truth in that lol. But when I think of 2,000 years of war and the millions of brave soldiers who have died for our country, 'cowardice' is just plain hurtful. World War I in particular. This conflict haunts me and I often think of the behavior I would have shown if I had been thrown into those trenches. It was so gruesome... In my eyes, the bravery of the men who fought in the mud for four years is arguably unequalled in the history of mankind. I swear every time a guy makes the 'white flag joke', an insanely brave soldier turns over in his grave. Thx for that video. o7
As a french, I still find the "white flag joke" funny because I take it as a joke about people (especially muricans) only knowing that about France's history.
since it would make them turn over, i'd put a generator and a humongous sized slap machine at the end. configured to do a slap defined as is: you know that slap a grandpa would send because his grandson told to this veteran "coward". or a son telling "mom I'd prefer not to be born".

Everything french is the absolute best, and everything else is not worth even a glance. I'm not saying this is every Frenchman, but it seems I'm not the only one with these experiences.
you will NEVER have to worry about that. History shows over and over the amazing resolve of the French people. Their will to fight for what they believe in AND die for. Our countries have historically been nothing but close friends with respect for one another. Then sometime after WW2 America and France seem to enjoy taking the piss out of eachother but in a mean-spirited way. But many examples of French history is still considered standard in American core Historical programs for teaching in schools. (Every American who claims they didn't learn about multiple French revolutions and wars throughout history are either straight up lying or didn't pay attention in class) Viva la France!
Judging by your comment I'd presume you're a historian; but with respect, aren't you contradicting your own argument if the only hardcore French were the resistance as opposed to the majority of their population?
La Résistance was more better than the French Army…. the officers and soldiers were not enough to fight. So it was up to the citizen of France to fight. And they did. ❤
"Despite our overwhelming numerical superiority, the French are counter-attacking at several points. I can't understand how these soldiers, sometimes fighting at 1 against 20, find the strength to attack. It's astonishing. I found in these soldiers the same ardour as in Verdun in 1916. We're not getting anywhere, and we're suffering terrifying losses. [...] Dunkirk proved to me that the French soldier is one of the best in the world. Theres a difference between the French Resistance, and the borderline useless Army.

In the end, two french soldiers were slightly wounded. With the help of ally artillery, they managed to kill two hundred assailant and injure six hundred others. There's more to the story it's worth checking out.

@aviator7479 that and the fact that some people on the internet make jokes about them surrendering and then they believe it but they are uneducated. Viva la France! 🇫🇷

- During WWII some french pilots went to the Soviet Union and fought alongside the soviets against Germany, today there is still a french fighter squadron named after these guys, the "Normandie-Niemen" (in reference to the region of Normandie of course and and Niemen in Russia.)
- There was also french soldiers who went into Norway to fight against Germany alongside their Norwegian brother in arms.
