I would suggest the 702 touch or the Cine 7 with Red control. It’s waaay more versatile than that DSMC3 monitor. Both the 702 touch and the Cine 7 have the same OS as the DSMC 3 monitor because they are all made by Small HD.
@ nope. It only really needs to happen when you swing pretty drastically between temperature of location and even then it only takes 20 seconds to calibrate
Love your setup! I started rigging out my Komodo and just made it too big to where it was uninspiring to shoot with. Seeing how compact this setup is reminds me of why I got the Komodo in the first place. Cheers from Atlanta!
Cool little setup. Good to hear about the control app. Even if i don’t use it, it’s great for other people on set to have alive feed. Make up artists. Wardrobe. Etc etc And that broll at the end looked great !! Thanks for sharing. Cant wait for my KX black 🐉
@@caffeinatedcameras I am. First time Red user and man, I have jumped into the deep deep end of the pool. Picked up the eVND and a Tokina Vista Prime 21mm PL mount...you know since I didn't have any PL mount lenses :) As well as the monitor and top handle. It will be interesting switching between Red, Sony and Blackmagic cameras.
@@caffeinatedcameras Still not sure of the cage system yet. Wanted to get everything in and go from there. I love Bright Tangerine systems but not sure they have everything figured out yet for the KX.
Beautiful rig, man. In my opinion I wouldn’t use a left handle (I’m right handed), cause I like to use my left hand to control the lens, but all the rest was great. One of the most beautiful advantages of RED is that app, so you don’t have to buy an expensive monitor (mostly at the beginning), but yeah, as you said, that monitor (the one from the Raptor-cable less) is a beauty. Expensive, but a beauty. Thanks. Happy to be part of your gang now 🙏
As someone who's been following you for a while now, I'm pumped to have you in the gang!!! I also, omit the left handle much of the time (along with the top handle) and use my left hand to pull focus.
Nice build video. As you have both cameras OG and X could you please do a comparison video. I’m not much for shoooting charts, more interested in skin tones, dynamic range and low light performance. Thanks in advance.
Yeah working on the logistics of how to compare with as little variables as possible. But I’m not much of a chart guy either: so it will be more or less experience/how it looks based.
For sure. It’s not going to beat your Sony, Canon, nikon, but its Face detect with ef lenses is much better than I anticipated. I use sigma Arts and they don’t miss when doing a talking head.
Looking like a solid & compact rig! I'd think changing one of those handles to a focus handle would be nice, if you want to control focus that is of course.
God I hate my 25lb. Gemini rig. My minimalist FX3 build has been my goto and clients can't tell the difference. I love your build. FYI, FXLION came out with mini batteries years ago. Been using the Nano 2s for awhile. I prefer them as you can actually see voltage instead of a percentage.
Depending on the lens, AF I don’t worry about it, and the AF is actually quite capable, but when it’s a manual lens, the handle will rest on the underside of my wrist
Meike, Kippertie, Mofage and Breakthrough all make a rear mounted VND. I have the Meike and it’s been great. You can get them either in PL or EF to RF. There are no rear mounted ND solutions for mirrorless mount lenses. The flange distance is too short. My ND solution for lenses is the Helix Maglock by PolarPro
I really enjoy GDU parts from a design aesthetic. Looks and comfort can’t be beat, but functionally not the best, not horrible, but not the best, and their customer service is pretty bad. I am looking forward to the new neutron line though. Really excited for that. Should take the functionality to a much higher level.
@@caffeinatedcameras Agreed! Those handles are so bad lol. I went with the Komodo side ribs. GDU has a v2 version of them now. With the side ribs you can add nato rails and use nato handles. I might try out the v2 side ribs from GDU.

@@caffeinatedcameras That's actually helpful info, because I'm waiting to buy the whole system until that monitor comes out. I rented the KX with the 7" and I just hated the oversized weight distribution of such a big, heavy monitor on a small camera system. Weight is really important to me for the way I shoot. I tried out the Ronin 4D last week and it about broke my back. 🤣
I was going through some of the other GDU stuff, and it looks like they did make some toolless thumbscrews for those Atlas grips. Looks like they include them in the full package. Not sure if they are worth $24 per screw buying them separate though haha. I'm sure making custom hardware like that isn't cheap though.
The Red Control app honestly works great for me on OG Komodo as well on latest firmware updates. I use it with a phone mounted in a little SmallRig cage that gives it 1/4-20s. I can't wait for RED to release a DSMC3 5" or 5.5" display. Patiently waiting for that to happen.
@@caffeinatedcameras yeah Jarred has said on quite a few livestreams he isn’t happy with the current monitor situation but they are working on it and a smaller version is definitely on the way at some point. Likely an issue of time it takes working with additional vendors to make things. A big SDI display that needs its own power solution or additional power cables is definitely not ideal though. I would love to see RED make a mini version of the DSMC2 side handle and has R/S and other dials and buttons. That is amazing on DSMC2 still.
