are some of them on STEAM ? If so it'd be another way... but I'm really not sure of my hopes on this one... Does my 2DS can by any chance get to the eshop and buy them, or can I buy them on the switch shop for my switch? Don't have a 3DS yet...
Before its tolate he says imagine this your day one patch got corrupted 3 months of playing but then nintendo dis continued their day one patches this has already happen sounds like someone is selling off his extra bulk of games someone should sue this person for scams and fraud
Looks like I am going to have to look into that now. Don't have a Switch to transfer funds so it's either physical copies or custom modding for my 3DS.
@luislopez7220 Sometime last year after they disabled adding funds directly on the 3DS I was still able to buy a digital gift card and use it. Maybe that still works?
0:53 You don't need a switch. From your 3DS you can merge your Nintendo Network ID (old account system for 3DS) with your Nintendo account (current system). Then add funds via PC/smart device on their website. The funds will then show on your 3DS.
I grabbed Radiant Historia on a whim a few weeks ago. What a hidden treasure that game is. Highly recommend, get it while you can. I also grabbed the first and second generation pokemon games. I can take or leave some of the middle generations but Im still quite fond of the original games.
I am glad I prioritized getting most of the must have and niche JRPG 3ds games years ago. I have every game on the list physically except for the M&L series, since I am not really a Mario fan. Also, I would like to add "Stella Glow", "Ever Oasis", "Tales of the Abyss", "rhythm thief", and "7th dragon iii code: vfd"
A lot of 3DS JRPGs are amazing, Radiant Historia, Etrian Odyssey, Dragon Quest VII and VIII, pretty much every SMT and Persona game and a few hidden gems like Stella Glow or Return to Popolocrois
I liked the 3DS waaaay more than the DS, even though the 3DS had fewer games because the 3DS games were of higher quality, like the games you listed. Some of the 3DS games were remasters of DS game though (like Radiant Historia and Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor Overclocked).
Radiant Historia is so good. Picked it up as a loose DS cartridge on a whim at Gamestop and I was blown away. I love the battle system, the plot and characters, and the soundtrack goes hard. I haven't played the 3DS version, but I picked it up on the eshop so that I could in the future. Definitely my most recommended of the RPGs on this list.
Shout out to the most lovely and wholesome man on the internet. I swear David I love you. Keep up making amazing videos. You inspired me to play more JRPGs and to get fit.
Really great list, thanks a bunch! It's nice to hear about these games from someone who's actually played them instead of just reading them off a list with a brief synopsis.
I completely agree that Radiant Historia is a MUST have for anyone who appreciates top tier storytelling. This is my favorite 3DS game actually and a true gem-I found it last year scrolling through the eshop. Altus needs to make a sequel asap.
@@DCHutch8 100% get the newer version (on the 3ds) with “Perfect Chronologically” appended to the title. It’s fully voiced (mostly) and they redid the art to make it a bit more updated.
Nice! With the exception of any Etrian Odyssey and Yokai games, I own ALL of the rest PHYSICALLY. Guess my collection is gonna massively spike in value :)
I love your videos they keep me updated on RPG news and what's coming out for Nintendo switch thank you so much and please keep making these wonderful videos
It breaks my heart still that the eShop is shutting down for 3DS. I luckily managed to snag a lot of these when they were cheap (no one really seemed to care about 3DS games until the Switch came out, ironically). I'm hoping most or all of these get modern remasters before too long. I feel like Radiant Historia especially would go over wonderfully with the Switch audience
Awesome list! Level 5 has an event coming up on March 9th, I believe. Not sure what will come of it but I’m super curious to see if there are any announcements
I would add "The Alliance Alive" and "The Legend of Legacy", but great games, all of them!! You mentioned a lot of awesome games in this video, I hope people are fast enough to get them before they vanish into data abyss.
Damn David, you and I are sympatico when it comes to RPGs. Everything you said about Zelda and all the games you covered here makes me realize we traveled the same route growing up and we’re likely very close in age! Keep it up my friend, shout out to Stella Glow!!!
This is a really great list! I have quite a lot of them physically already. The only sticking point for a few of these is that a lot of them have big features to make things easier... that require StreetPass to get the most out of, and the time for that is long past. I'm thinking the bonus shops from the villages in Bravely Default, the extra base content in Fire Emblem Fates, etc.
Thanks David for this amazing list. Also I find both Link between worlds and link to the past to be one of my favorites, that I love to play from time to time. Thanks for the update. Please take care.
Actually even at the release of this video we know exactly what the Layton game on Switch is. It’s “The New World of Steam”, not a remake. The series is S tier, and definitely deserves to be played! Aside from that, Radiant Historia Perfect Chronology, Tales of The Abyss, and Persona Q are all great games that I can personally vouch for. Beat all three of them 😁
Don't forget Ever Oasis and Monster Hunter Stories! Also, for physical collectors, you can mod your 3DS to play other region games! I bought the European DQ 7 and 8 and can play them just fine. A lot of the European 3ds games are much cheaper, I'm so glad the Switch doesn't have region locking
I absolutely love the Etrian Odyssey games. I do wish that the EO Untold story lines were coming to the switch. It has a great sense of dread when running into the FOEs and some of the bosses that most RPGs don’t have. And trying to avoid them is very fun.
Don’t forget about Fire Emblem Fates Revelation! It’s DLC exclusive to either conquest/birthright unless you wanna track down the physical special edition.
at this point it'd be better and cheaper to just jailbreak your 3ds if you don't already have games you're missing that aren't cheap physically. plus you can only play the fan translated 3ds rpgs on a hacked 3ds. And there's quite a few RPGs we never got localised.
For Fire Emblem Fates Birthright or Conquest, there is additional downloadable content from the eshop, but it is only accessible via an in-game "store" at the end of Chapter 6. This includes Revelation, which is the actual end of the Fates story (not an alternate path, for example), as well as other meaningful and important content. Chapter 6 is still towards the beginning in any case. To buy this physically, though, is quite expensive because it is very rare, only available via the Limited Edition that has Birthright, Conquest, and Revelations all on one cart (around $350 or more). So ideally, get either Birthright or Conquest from the eshop and work towards the end of Ch. 6 before the store closes.
Way ahead of you David, I bought myself about $200 worth of Eshop cards the other day and already downloading as many Jrpg's as I can! 3DS is my main gaming device, play it more than anything else I own. Btw, I think there's another Layton game on 3DS it's called Katrielle something I think. Also for Fire Emblem Fates, if you want the true final boss and real ending I think you need to download the third route Revelations as DLC either that or pay a fortune for the special edition which had all three versions on one cartridge. Though I'm not sure if the DLC is still available now or not, but just some info for anyone interested in them.
I am glad I own all the Fire Emblem and SMT games on 3DS physically plus the Persona Q titles. I might just take my chances and hope they port more of the Etrian Odyssey games to PC and Switch and maybe do the same for Radiant Historia. Might also hold out hope for Dragon Quest ports since I feel they are bound to happen eventually as well as Bravely ports. If they never end up happening, I will probably try to save up for the insane prices the physical copies will go for by then.
The only 3 3DS games that I missed out on at launch and kinda gave up on collecting in physical were Layton vs. Phoenix Wright, Yokai Watch 2 psychic scepters & 3.
Games I'll add: Alliance Alive: just an awesome Atlus jRPG. Fantasy Life (and the DLC) Tales of the Abyss: another classic. Stella Glow: Great sRPG - very opera like story and theme. 7th Dragon III: Code VFD (an Etrian Odyssey style without being locked to a grid). And not JRPG but awesome anyway: Monster Hunter 3U and 4U (best of the 'old school' Monster Hunters).
Oh man, this is perfect. Pick these up while you still can and they're available. There's a little quirk I want to add, though. The gameboy pokemon games - gen 1 and 2 - support multiplayer on the DS.
I bought a 120 games in cartridge off ebay for like 30 bucks. Has all the games you’d want....Pokémon, Mario, fire emblem, the cool aliens metroidvania game, the castlevania games, and most importantly dragon quest 4 5 6. Love it
what surprised me the most was the fact that for fire emblem they took away permadeath on the ds, but japanese only, which was a sequel to after marth where you also make your own character, thankfully it's fully translated but globally yeah awakening was the first
I was lucky enough to still able to find etrian odyssey nexus at normal price a while ago, now i have all the 3ds versions of the series which i am pretty happy about
Agreed, since the gameplay is designed around it removing it makes the games braindead. The turnwheel mechanic and Thracia 776's "give everyone Paragon" easy mode are better fixes for the series.
Highly suggest Dragon Ball Fusions as well. Great collectathon RPG with lots of customization, and tons of characters, and that's even before you start fusing!
Heard that fire emblem fates was delisted from the store February 28th, but dlc including other paths will still be available until eshop store closure. Haven’t gone on my 3ds yet to confirm
I see you didn't include Xenoblade Chronicles 3D. Good call, I recently downloaded it and soon came across a bug that froze cutscenes. It's much better on other platforms.
Worth mentioning Fire Emblem Fates: Revelation, the third path in the Fates games which is digital only. In other words it will be impossible to get (legit) once the eshop closes. Sure it is not amazing but still worth playing if you like the Fates games
Seeing as Nintendo is doing everything in its power to stop us from actually buying from them, I'll just download these games. And no, I will never pay the exorbitant prices of the physical releases. I buy games to support the original developers, not to make resellers rich.
It really is irritating how difficult Nints makes it to simply support developers honestly. It's almost like they're trying to create the next generation of pirates and deprive themselves of money. Makes zero sense what they do sometimes.
Radiant Historia is one of the best jrpgs ever made. I bought most of the titles retail for good prices . When i see some prices now, wuahhh . The only games i dont have from that list are 3 Etrian Titles and Shin megami 4 and 4 apocalypse. Another great Tactic Jrpg is Crimson Shroud. Its 3ds exclusive . I think its pretty cheap (7,99)
You forgot Fire emblem warriors, I know is a different kind of game and it is also on the switch but if you are talking about the series it can be mentioned.
Well, fortunately, I went and bought all of the physical releases of all of the games you just mentioned and then some, except for the professor Layton games, right after I heard that the store was closing down for my RPG collection. They are not listed as RPG’s on gamefaqs. Are they RPG’s? RPG Elements? They are listed as puzzle games as far as I know. Great video. Thanx
#WatchAllDavidsVideosChallenge Totally agree that Radiant Historia is a MUST PLAY for any JRPG fans especially retro fans. And for Dragon Quest VIII it's also worth mentioning that they got rid of random encounters (except on sea) from the original. In addition, the instant alchemy pot and other QoL additions really make this the definitive version until the hypothetical remake is done
My New Nintendo 3DS XL broke back in 2018, I have my Nintendo Switch since 2018 to.. I recently for the past couple of months have been thinking about buying a New Nintendo 3DS XL on Amazon or EBay.. I might get paid some money soon to be able to buy it since my Birthday is on March 22.. I'll be 28 this year 😞.. anyways I'm trying to buy the 3DS before the Eshop closes! Games I want to buy again: Pokémon Omega Ruby Pokemon X And Y Pokemon Ultra Moon Shin Megami Tensei Apocalypse Kirby Games Pokemon Crystal Fire Emblem Noir&Birthright ... There's many other games I want to buy as well...
I was only informed like 2 weeks ago even though the news was out a year ago. I was hesitant on starting Sword and Shield but with this happening I was forced to restart. Im speedrunning Virtual Console, GameBoy and 3DS games of Pokemon 😅
This I think is the best time to be a 3DS owner and I regret that I no longer own the system. It’s the perfect time to jailbreak the console and get all the titles you’ve missed out trying. Once I got the Switch I regretfully sold my 3DS because of the lousy low resolution of the console that bothered me after the Switch’s leap in fidelity.
Wow, I had no idea those Yokai games were that expensive but it makes sense given that I remember going out on Yokai Watch 3 launch day and not finding a single copy until about my fourth store which happened to be a random best buy. They only had the one copy too which is insane given the game just came out. Lots of incredible RPG's here and I can't say enough good things about Radiant Historia and the SMT collection of games available on 3DS.
Thank you so much for making this! It is exactly what I was looking for and was going to ask if you could make while there’s still time to buy. :) Now I don’t have to worry that I’ll forget about important 3DS JRPGs. Any chance of making one for the Wii U, too since their shop closes at the same time?
I don't know if Pokemon Mystery Dungeon really counts but I hated how PMD Gates to Infinity DLC already has been removed. Before the closure.... :((. I bought all DQ games for 3DS and FE too^^
I always think of the dearly departed Jack Layton when I hear about Professor Layton. He was a university professor before he got involved in Canadian politics. The games are also lovely :)
I would like to add Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, and Monster Hunter Generations to this list. It aint no JRPG but hell it is worth it. Also Fantasy Life and Radiant Historia Perfect Chronology should be on here.
It's good that DQ8 is on the N3DS but I wish a remaster of the game would come out. Pretty much every other Dragon Quest game has had a remake or remaster and a great game like DQ8 deserves it.
Love the list but im not panic buying anything at full price not even full priced dlcs so if i miss it then unfortunately i missed it then, plus games get re-released so often now a days you never know if it will get released again. I got burned bad by panic buying a lot of games when sony announced it was closing the psn store last may then changed it’s mind and so far legend of mana, persona 3 portable and legend of dragoon have all been re-released so nintendo games could come back.
Hey David! How much extra memory should I get if I’m going to attempt to get ALL of these RPGs? (And I want to pick up a good selection of shmups and platformers too!) A ballpark estimate would be most appreciated!
If you're not downloading up to 300 games (the limit), then a 128gb card should do you. I'm using 128gb and am nearing the 300 game limit but the majority of these games are smaller eshop exclusives: my retail games are physical. Retail games are usually a lot bigger. This 300 game limit only applies if you're doing it legally and not hacking your 3DS.
@@djhabibi04 Thanks for the info. I was expecting to pick up a couple more 32gb cards and here you are talking about a 128gb card! Who knew? Everybody but me apparently!
@@craiganderson7986 I'd really need to know how many games total you're buying. To be honest, I only upgraded to 128gb because I was close to filling my 64gb. Since the upgrade, I haven't got that much more. 64gb may well do you as well. Games are different sizes but rule of thumb is that the retail ones are bigger.
@@rooty No, it is possible: I'm using a 128gb card in an unmodded 3ds. Nintendo officially suggest 64gb max but if you exceed it, then you'll just have to format it yourself on PC (as opposed to via the console: I think the format needs to be MS DOS Fat, you can check anyway) After that, you can copy your data over card to card with PC just fine.
Surprised you didn't mention Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire or Sun/Moon! Games like Zelda and Professor Layton aren't RPGs so those games probably would have fit in those slots better. Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call is another good recommendation, it's a rhythm game with RPG mechanics where your characters have levels and skills, and you can make your own party of FF characters.
@@SirKupoNut True, but buying one of the 3DS games would be cheaper and more portable than Final Bar Line on Switch. You're right though, Final Bar Line is better in every way.
I wouldn't buy Link between Worlds digitally just yet unless you for whatever reason have no other way. As of this writing, it's still rather affordable physically. Your mileage varies, but I seen it going as low as $20 at my local walmart recently. Online retails usually listed anywhere from $25-$40, which is probably what you'll be paying digitally anyway...
I'm so surprised you didn't go in depth regarding Fire Emblem Fates! That one is notorious for having the canon path Download only! There is no way to physically buy it. They had a super limited edition which contained all 3 games of Fire Emblem Fates, but those are literally impossible to get now. So there will literally be no chance to buy it after the 3DS store shuts down.

Friendly reminder to anyone that you can look into modding your 3ds since Nintendo has stopped supporting it! 👀
If I were to mod it after they close the eshop, would I still be able to download games? Or would you have to do it and download what you want before?
@@mcm426 when the eshop is gone, it's gone.

Radiant Historia is indeed one of the best jrpgs ever made!
Awesome video and list :D
You forgot Fire emblem warriors, I know is a different kind of game and it is also on the switch but if you are talking about the series it can be mentioned.
Picked up all Etrian odyssey games, wondering what dlc would be worth picking up if any?
i was playing dragon quest 7 next to your video and you said not so good as 8 -.-
but still a great video XD
It's cool to realize I have all these games except like... maybe one SMT game.
Thanx
Also if you want the fire emblem games there is 45-50 dollars worth of dlc for each game it is highly worth it
Some fantastic game on here, especially the Etrian Odyssey games.

Totally agree that Radiant Historia is a MUST PLAY for any JRPG fans especially retro fans. And for Dragon Quest VIII it's also worth mentioning that they got rid of random encounters (except on sea) from the original. In addition, the instant alchemy pot and other QoL additions really make this the definitive version until the hypothetical remake is done
Heyo David! Never owned a 3DS, but wow, some the games look really good!
Games I want to buy again:
Pokémon Omega Ruby
Pokemon X And Y
Pokemon Ultra Moon
Shin Megami Tensei Apocalypse
Kirby Games
Pokemon Crystal
Fire Emblem Noir&Birthright ...
There's many other games I want to buy as well...
I'm glad I held onto my 3ds copies of DQ7 and 8
I was only informed like 2 weeks ago even though the news was out a year ago. I was hesitant on starting Sword and Shield but with this happening I was forced to restart.
Im speedrunning Virtual Console, GameBoy and 3DS games of Pokemon 😅
Definitely Etrian Odyssey. If you want great challenge
Radiant Historia, one of the greatest games of all time. Thank you HCBailly!
Yup!
Thanks, David! The 3DS has a lot of fantastic games.
Only for collectors, the games weren’t much fun like a bootleg pokemon game.
@@missingno81 idk i like the series. I really enjoyed the stories and characters in each game.
Btw online is the only way (besides the physical collectors) to grab the 3rd Fire Emblem Fates game, the "true" ending: Revelations
playing chained echoes finally ty for telling me about it
sooo amazing
Thank you for your recommendations! I’m downloading them now! Just subbed as well because your so handsome 😘💪🏽
:((. I bought all DQ games for 3DS and FE too^^
Ugh, the 27th?! Sorry my birthday is screwing things up again, y’all. I need to find my 3DS and get on these purchases. Thanks for the alert, David.
School me sir, I will have my notepad at the ready

looks like im missing out, i dont have a 3Ds nor have the money to get one
I always think of the dearly departed Jack Layton when I hear about Professor Layton.
He was a university professor before he got involved in Canadian politics.
The games are also lovely :)
Maybe you could mod him as the main char? It would be funny to play Prof Layton, where he enjoys a hab's game at some time...
I would like to add Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, and Monster Hunter Generations to this list. It aint no JRPG but hell it is worth it. Also Fantasy Life and Radiant Historia Perfect Chronology should be on here.
Amazing list !
I also wanna add Stella Glow as #36!
R.I.P. Nintendo eShop... (Too soon though.)
Just jailbreak 3ds
They kinda forced us to do that, so I would say that's a good idea
It's good that DQ8 is on the N3DS but I wish a remaster of the game would come out. Pretty much every other Dragon Quest game has had a remake or remaster and a great game like DQ8 deserves it.
The New Professor Layton Game already have a name it is called Professor Layton and the new World of Steam.
I loved A Link Between Worlds, great Zelda game
Love the list but im not panic buying anything at full price not even full priced dlcs so if i miss it then unfortunately i missed it then, plus games get re-released so often now a days you never know if it will get released again. I got burned bad by panic buying a lot of games when sony announced it was closing the psn store last may then changed it’s mind and so far legend of mana, persona 3 portable and legend of dragoon have all been re-released so nintendo games could come back.
David promoting the "Backlog Never Ending" cause.
Never owned a 3DS but that DQVIII........errrr
I dislike that youtube unscribed me on this channel and I had to subscribe again.
Well I’m glad to have you back! :)
@@djhabibi04 isn't it only possible to use up to 32 gig cards unless the 3DS is modded
With Final Bar Line out now there isnt much point to Curtain Call, but if you haven't got a switch then I'd pick it up
@@SirKupoNut True, but buying one of the 3DS games would be cheaper and more portable than Final Bar Line on Switch. You're right though, Final Bar Line is better in every way.
Oh goody 35 RPG's i can torrent for my modded 3DS, Though i will need to get a bigger memory card.
3ds games with dlc must get like strage journey
I'm so surprised you didn't go in depth regarding Fire Emblem Fates! That one is notorious for having the canon path Download only! There is no way to physically buy it. They had a super limited edition which contained all 3 games of Fire Emblem Fates, but those are literally impossible to get now. So there will literally be no chance to buy it after the 3DS store shuts down.
Fates is one of the worst FE games anyways, so it'a not a huge loss.
