    Thus is the way I was taught (1972) to make a granny square. Turning/reversing each round. Even if soild 1 color that way your squares are straighter. I was shocked went almost no one didn't do it.

    • @stalstonestacy4316
      @stalstonestacy4316 3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Almost no one does it because it isn't proper. Grannies are a in-the-round motif, which are not turned. If squares are crooked or out of square it is because either the count or then tension is off and nothing more. ITR motifs have a right side and a wrong side which are easily discernable when worked correctly which will matter a great deal in some patterns

      @@stalstonestacy4316 I am making a cardigan with Nuboo yarn and the designer pattern has you cc at end of the round by not closing the round in its color but slipping a new color in and with the new color loop on the hook turn the work then slipknot and chain two, 2dc, then next sp 3dc. My issue is not whether it is proper or not but by not tying off to close row will my work fall apart with this silkie slippery yarn. and yes a lot of cutting and weaving ends. I just assumed that turning every row with the yarn I am using would give the finished garment a nice drape.

      If we are using just one color then do we need to cut off at every row and turn? Please reply, much appreciated. TIA

    I have been making, household items, clothing, baby items, etc and never learned the granny square. I tried the solid granny square today and it was so unbelieveably wonky! I found ur video u did some of it and tried just turning and reversing it and it actually lays flat and just a lil wavy ( probably from tension or count) . Ty so much !!!! May u recieve all God has for u this year!

    of course when I learned the granny, I did not turn every round. now many many squares later, I made several blankets during covid and I turned my work on every round. Needless to say, it made such a difference in my squares. lesson learned but the instructions that were available to me at that time, did not include row turning. thanks Sirin for your wonderful videos♥ happy crocheting!

      Well, I have to totally disagree with you. The crochet hook is important! But, more important is the type and quality of the yarn. You can make a fabulous stitch, but with poor quality yarn the end result is poor.

    I find the benefit of squares and rounds is that you don't have to turn them. I use to feel ocd about the imperfectness and curves but i think its so cute how it uniforms like the no flip square. I love this works for others but for me it hurts seeing the wrong side, it actually repulsive even though if it actually does look good because it's a muted stitch.
    If i didnt know how to crochet or anything id probs love the flip method. A reason I don't like crochet basic scarfs is all that flipping and the wrongness.

    • @ez2427
      @ez2427 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you can't use a mental disorder/disability as a way to describe how you feel. what you were describing is that you are a perfectionist. you wanted it to look perfect. you cannot "feel" ocd, but you can live with it and experience it.

      @@mamachez65 this is old but i hope you have mastered your craft by now. I was going to suggest that the brand of hook you use is important. I crocheted many years only noticing that, for SOME reason, the Susan Bates worked much better than Boye. Then came YT and Amazon and, wow, so many brands of hooks.
      Arthritis and misaligned fingers in old age sent me looking for soft, light, ergonomic hooks and i found LITEs, wh worked well, until I found Tulip Etimo Rose. They are ergonomic and light but the hooks fly through all sorts of yarn wo incidents. They are ridiculously expensive $10-$15 ea but a deal on a whole set and well worth every penny! You will end up w one set you use for all your projects instead of a drawer full of misc hooks.
      Good luck and happy hooking!🤗

      @mamachez65 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      GC Durnin ty so much. I have purchased better hooks and it has made a world of difference for me.
      After trial and error I have gone with The Tulip And The Clover Amore.
      I love the tulips in smaller sizes and the Clover for anything 6mm and larger. I love the tulip hooks with the gold shaft. I do have 2 of the tulips in the Rose Color 5.0 and 5.5mm. They are NOT the same as the gold ones as advertised. I just finished a crib size blanket using the 5.5mm tulip in rose. That was my 4th blanket I’ve made since I started crocheting 🧶 nearly a year ago.
      I’ve used different hooks and yarn on each of them. After trial and error I’ve been able to figure out what works best for Me at this point.
      I appreciate so many of you who have reached out to me with advice on yarn, hooks and using stitch markers etc
      This whole YT World has blown my mind in general. You can find ANYTHING ON HERE. It’s crazy.
      So I’ve learned to crochet, plant a vegetable garden, a cut flower garden 🪴 and how to make some authentic Mexican food 🌮🌯 down home country gravy and fried chicken 🍗
      It’s amazing 🤩

    When you “hide” the new colour yarn, I always knot it. Surely in the wash the blanket could fall to pieces? 😳😳😳

    How do you make the “wrong” granny square

    • @opheliamaples
      @opheliamaples 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Just keep working in spiral fashion with the right-side always facing you. That's the traditional method and certainly not "wrong", but some people find that their square comes out a bit warped/biased. The sides can appear undulated rather than straight.
      The method here in this video has you changing direction for each round so the square comes out more balanced as you're not continuously going in one direction and potentially creating a bias in your crochet fabric.
      Personally, I don't have this problem, and blocking can help eliminate a lot of issues, but it's good to know this tip incase you have to work with yarn that aggravate tension issues.

    I am unclear as to what you did differently in the sample? Was it how you did the corners? Thanks for your help.

      She turns, instead of continuing on the same side. It's the same granny pattern, just flip it after each row. Hope that helps.

    But what happens if I only use one color ?

      You can still turn your work. Instead of joining with 3 chains you can make 1 ch and and join with a hdc. Idk if it make sense 🙈 with this way you can turn and directly start in the middle of the corner.

    Is it possible to not flip the square evey row and still get a perfect square?

      Not perfect but you can have good looking squares. You can see this way, please check out my lastest granny square (and triangle) video

    So what’s the secret lol I am confused is it just chaining 1 in between stitches?

    • @lillyfrstr
      @lillyfrstr ปีที่แล้ว

      it's to turn over your project between each row (it's not the usual way of doing it and it helps to make it less crooked)
