  • Just how difficult is it to drive a Tesla in the UK when you're on a schedule? How does the car's navigation manage charging stops?
And the BIGGEST question of all - will I need to queue? I visit a very old supercharger, knowing there is a queue, so that you don't have to...

Think all destination chargers are 32A, that one has presumably only got a single phase supply rather than 3 phase.
    1 phase 7kW, 3 phases 22kW.
4 years in, not queued yet. Drove Aberdeenshire to London and back between Xmas and New Year.
Charging was busy, Perth was as busy as I've ever seen it, but always had spaces when I arrived.

I’ve had my model Y LR over a year and had to queue twice. Once was for five minutes outside of Liverpool at the services, and the other was at Warwick services for two minutes. To be fair, I routed to Warwick instead of going further down. Also, both sites use split charging rather than v3 s. Another great video 😊

I really like these old tucked away chargers that were presumably installed before there were so many Teslas on the road so a pair of them was perfectly fine. There are 8 near Maidstone hiding behind a hedge on the edge of a housing estate which seem really ad-hoc but are in a really good place. The hotel nearby has even tapped into the charging and setup a little lobby coffee shop for them.

I still have another BEV which is a BYD ATTO 3 and which although thoroughly enjoyable, I do miss my MY RWD. I'm now waiting for the new Juniper MY to be released later this year here in Australia. 3 weeks in with the MYLR and we’ve done a fair few supercharging stops, thanks to the usual Xmas long distance family visits. Haven’t needed to queue either, so far, but it’s come close twice where I popped onto the last stall. Mind you the “queue” time was still extremely short for the person who arrived just after me as people are not spending long periods charging.
The south Manchester supercharger in Stockport is interesting as it’s got 8 stalls but 4 of them are, I think, older v2 and shared. Weirdly because those are next to the entrance they always seem to fill first, leaving the faster v3 (again, I think!) non-shared stalls at the back open.
As new EV owners we’ve found the charging experience to be really smooth using the cars navigation routing. I’ve never felt range anxiety and we’ve either filled our time charging with comfort/food breaks, or chatted to the other people charging. EV drivers seem to be quite social!

As an EV owner of 8 years, I'm of the opinion that the charging network is as bad as it's ever going to be today, in that any day in the future is a day better then one in the past. I'd love to see some real data on the number of chargers V the number of EV's, as I'm sure the ratio is better now then at anytime in my 8 years of ownership. And thats only going to get better, just drive into Exeter services and you will see what the future looks like, an empty newly refurbished petrol station and 50+ in use high power EV chargers. There is money in selling electric to EV drivers and as they wait around a little more, there is also upsell of flashy coffees and donuts, so it just makes commercial sense for the providers to provide.

50kW is a nice speed for chargers at supermarkets and fast food restaurants.
I think for most EV needs, 50kW chargers should become the go-to speed for any chargers installed in car parks of shopping centres and town centres, replacing 7kW. A vast number of 50kW would allow most shoppers to charge to 80 to 90 % while they eat or do their shopping for an hour or so.
7kW is just too slow: good for hotels and huge park and ride car parks where cars are parked for several hours, but if I only need to charge 7kWh while I shop for groceries or grab a coffee, it means I’m only travelling locally and most likely charge at home. If I was to be on a long trip, I would want to charge much more in one hour.
Arguably, a faster charger where I only stop for 10-15 minutes for the same amount of charge would be just as convenient, except it does not take advantage of the amenities on site.
It’s obvious the problem is with the speed at which new sites are installed and the reliability of those chargers.
Tesla seems to have addressed one problem (super fast charging) but not the other: put a charger on every lamppost.

Ive never spent more than 30 mins in McDonald's so rapid chargers are probably valid there not so much ikea as you could spend weeks lost in there . Rapid chargers in mcds may help the 40% population people without. home charging . The right charging device should be installed depending on location use so I agree rapid chargers shouldnt be at cinemas massive shopping complex like meadowhall as people tend to spend 2 or more hours there and 7/22kw chargers would likely be more suitable

I guess I’m just saying that EV’s and the infrastructure is not (at this stage) an answer to replacing ICE cars. There is also more and more questions being asked about the green credentials of EV’s. in my opinion EV’s are for people who enjoy the performance and technology associated with EV’s and not a replacement for ICE vehicles. For example the EV semi has not seen the explosion that Musk predicted.

LOL. So a 500 mile drive turns out to be more like 1000 miles because you have to divert all the time to available charging points! Then you have to wait for 20 mins or so to claim a few extra miles?
I have a car which can be "charged" at all available fuel stations which are plentiful. It takes 2 minutes and I can take any route I choose without relying on computers! Plus I don't need an "app" or subscription to any club. Nor worry about adaptors, or broken charging stations.
Oh and everyone forgets where the electricity comes from too. There aren't enough windmills to keep a green promise by a long margin. So lets burn more coal and oil!
Also tell us how much the tyres cost as well as the other running costs. A know a Tesla service is a LOT more than you might expect, despite the simplicity of the tec.

Good morning! Thanks for bringing the comedy to the channel. Let’s me tear this apart and have a laugh if you don’t mind:
“500 miles turns into “1,000”. It’s a road trip, not a proclaimers song.
“Wait for 20 minutes” - my total time waiting for a charge is zero minutes
“To claim a few extra miles” - claim from whom?
“All available fuel stations” my car does most of its charging as I sleep. Beats any fuel station.
“I can take any route I choose” - same - “without computers”. - same. Though you and I both know that *most* drivers use satnav all the time. Which is why car manufacturers all fit satnav to meet demand.
“Plus I don’t need an app” - yep, that’s what Tesla is. You just plug in and it starts charging quicker than it takes your fuel station attendant to notice you and push the button.
“Or subscription” - same. But when I did use petrol/diesel I had various “subscription” style cards to earn points by fuelling with the same brand.
“Everyone forgets where electricity comes from”. Correct. An ever - growing percentage from non-fossil sources. “Let’s burn more coal and oil”. We don’t burn either of those. Some gas, but that is down to 35%
      www.cityam.com/the-numbers-dont-lie-the-uks-renewable-energy-transition-is-going-better-than-you-think/
“Tell us how much the tyres cost” - dunno - on 27k miles I am thousands of miles from needing them. And when I buy them they will be cheaper than the tyres were on my previous Volvo diesel which had even bigger wheels.
“Other running costs”. Well I had a blown headlight but as Tesla has no service plan the servicing costs have been zero, insurance is high but no higher than similar performance cars (see Compare the Market and RSymons TH-cam), and tax is zero.
“I know Tesla service is more than you expect”. There is no service. None. Zero.
Anything else? Please warn me next time you post “facts” so I can get a bag of popcorn ready

    • @legpeguk
      @legpeguk 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Well done in taking my comments and changing the context completely.
"500 miles turns into 1000" may well be a song, but the point I was making is that your journey time in a Tesla is much less predictable.
"Wait for 20 mins" this really made me laugh. I wasn't referring to the queue, rather the time it takes to charge (in best case scenario). I can "charge" in under 1 minute!
Although I like the principle of the electric car, I laugh at how badly it is being introduced. I would love one, but it would be too costly, especially due to the fact I couldn't charge it at home.
As for the comment about fossil fuels.... Think about it carefully. If we all drove electric cars, we'd be burning more oil than by driving ICE cars. There is no infrastructure for this and until there is a sensible plan, I will never buy one.

    • @justgetatesla
      @justgetatesla  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

@legpeguk - you can refuel in under 1 minute? No, you can't. And you appear to be one of those drivers claiming to only stop for fuel, regardless of the length of trip. Most drivers stop. Motorway services full of cars. Roadside McDonalds with busy car parks. People stop. And when I stop, the car charges. Back when I had a car I had to fuel it it was do a stop, and *then* add the time to refuel.
As for the comment on oil, I don't get you. How does an EV "burn more oil" than a car that burns oil? A fuel car burns electricity to pump oil then to crack it then to pump the refined fuels then it burns some of that fuel to transport it and more electricity to pump it - only for most of the energy in the fuel to be lost in heat and transmission loss. And don't say "where does your electricity come from" as (a) we don't burn oil for electricity in the UK and (b) we're down to only 1/3 of energy being from fossil fuel. The rest is renewable and nuclear.
"refuel in under 1 minute". What a spanner.
