- The nice thing about living in Aberdeenshire are the iconic places I can get to on a day trip. I don't have time to do the whole North Coast 500 at the moment, but I can do some of it...
Welcome to Just Get a Tesla, where I do a series of tests and challenges to help show people that instead of shopping around for EVs they should just get a Tesla...

I did a thousand mile tour of the Scottish highlands in a 53kw MG5, doddle.
Looks fantastic. Haven’t driven in Scotland but would love to plan an extended trip so I could do so.
Enjoying your drive to N. Scotland. Very scenic and it looks chilly! I also saw your “Living with Tesla” video. Looks like driving a gas car but much cheaper! Thanks for the informative videos!😊
You are welcome! 🙏
Hi, I'm watching Munroe and it's being said the range anxiety was invented in 1916 where the electric cars fought out with the readily assembled combustion cars, you had to disassemble the engine top every ten hours and the battery car had to be topped up with water each day. So the 10 hours sounded like the best option then.
This is a welcome change from all the blue skies and sunshine in Australia .
Getting my model Y next week .
Probably nice to see some history aswell.
Ullapool harbour only 20P a kWH
Very enjoyable as ever. will have to check my CPS account, not used it for maybe 2 years so need to make sure its still live! I completely agree re the need to stop, and charging the car will pretty well fit into that schedule (my need for stops is more frequent than the cars need to charge) . I guess you had the option to charge at J O'G which would have meant there would have beenno need to stop where and when you did, which would completely destroy any luddite arguments - you were going to J O'G and were stopping there anyway. Car would have charged while you were looking round and having a coffee. Looking forward to the next instalment
Another enjoyable video. It's only a week since returning from Orkney and it was nice to see some of the familiar roads. CPS got in touch a few weeks back to say the were changing their billing system and I had to go on line and BASICALLY change some details which means that you will now be charged when you use the card instead of being billed at a later date. I also heard of someone yesterday who said their CPS card was not working. I will be using my one this weekend so I will see how I get on.
Easy. I've seen it done in a 24kWh Nissan Leaf!
We did the full NC500 2 years ago and deffo a fab trip with LOTS of interesting places. We stayed at the altnaharra hotel overnight because we needed to stay at tongue or thereabouts and everywhere decent was full so we drove down there and back again next day. You can watch deer in the fields from the restaurant 😉. There’s a terrible stretch of road close the the loch I think that is single track with few passing places and goes for miiiiiles. About 20 I think. Luckily didn’t meet too much traffic. Minus points for not equating climate change with those temperatures. It should roll of the tongue like a motor action. Expect a letter soon cancelling your Lib Dem membership. Tut tut😂
Fantastic scenery thanks for the tour!!!
Another quality scenic interesting video Ian. Very enjoyable Sunday viewing. Random question, does your Y suffer from rattles at the rear? I ask as it seems incredibly quiet when you’re driving. Mine on the other hand is noisy except on perfect road surfaces!
I will look forward to your version of the Scottish compass challenge! I wanted to go from mallaig to Skye and go up the west coast. Sadly Calmac was fully booked when I enquired the day before.
You did it first! It looked like fun so I have to work it in at some point soon!
did a year ago and slept in the model y at john o'groats
Thanks for the tour
I'm not long back from touring Argyll in my Ioniq 5. I was armed with my ChargePlaceScotland card and it just wasn't an issue. Met other tourists though who hadn't got this card and they were experiencing some problems. Thanks for the video Ian and love your channel!
another epic video!
Again, I really enjoy your trip. In terms of cold weather, in the 80s during the Chrismas break from school, I participated in January a winter training in the military in Quebec City (nord) and encounter minus 40.
I have just returned from a round trip Liverpool to Orkney in my Model 3 SR LFP so its nice to see on film some of our route. A couple of points to add which may be of interest to others travelling north. My bigest mistake was to ignore the car telling me to top up at Charnock Richard as I felt I had only just strarted the trip. I chose to stop at Tebay as it would then be lunchtime...big mistake... the Superchargers were rammed with a long queue, so had to drive back over the motorway to charge on a new Westmorland charger...more expensive but fast. So lesson from this is, if the Tesla tells you to charge somewhere, just do it as it knows better than you. Larkhall with masses of V4s is great, but I wish Tesla would put benches nearby so you can sit and have a coffee rather than sitting in the car. Inverness was grim inside a 1970's multistory car park (I also paid for the parking as not sure if there was a way to avoid it). On the way back Aviemore wasn't much better at the back of an hotel amongst the bins and Perth lots of chargers but scruffy with loads of litter blowing around. Wish Tesla would put more effort into making the environment around the Supercharger network nicer places to wait. However, brilliant trip and Orkney glorious. Charles
I did the Inverness (from the same car park) to Dunnet Head and back again to the car park on a single charge last May. I left with just under 100% and got back with 12% on a LR Model Y. I had to go around the Beauly Firth as well on the way back as the bridge was closed.
Then we did the NC500 with both our EVs, Ioniq 38 and ID3 58kw. Stayed at Keiss then Lochcarron for 3 days each. Did the Bealach na ba , Skye then down to Oban and home. Plenty chargers for me 170 mile Ioniq
Nice forward control Land Rover with trailer at 6:30.
Old military road past the Cairngorm ski centres , done it the other weekend and thinking how should a EV cope with this. Regen would be fun on it. Wait thought charge Scotland was free?
Maybe it was at one time.
I keep thinking it should be John OGroates something, but there's no apostrophe, is there.
Did Kinross to John o Groats in my 38kw Ioniq, 3 adults and 2 border collies. Stopped at Kingussie to walk dogs and wee top up then again at Golspie for same then on to JoG and then to the actual Most Northerly Point on the Mainland, Dunnet Head. Plenty chargers en route
Thanks for this video. I hope to do similar trip next year.
Where shall I start, there is so much to say and contribute. Lovely video, I was waiting for this one, it made my day. I want to go back already. Ps. Definitely add Orkney in a NC500 trip and visit Skara Brae’s stonage town/village 😊
I have only one issue, please in future ensure the rear view mirror isn’t hogging centre stage. I was constantly finding myself trying to look round it to appreciate the vista.
Full marks for the route though. Thanks.
Yeah I only noticed that when I started to edit. Mount location / length will be fixed on the next one
Thanks for another marvellous video. I'll be checking my CPS app and updating it if required.
If you've been to Skye like me, you'll know how bad the charging is there: all the points could supply 28 connectors. When I was there 18 were broken. I had to charge at 1•2 kw on my granny lead which took me three days to get enough to reach Kylerea, a 50 kw unit.
I arrived at 04:30 to be sure it was clear, then I left the island, never to return.
I think SWARCO have taken over, but things don't seem to be much better.
Here endeth the rant!
That modification using your phone behind the steering wheel looks great easy to see your speed instantly without looking away to the main screen ,so has to make your driving experience better .Nice video look forward to the next one
You'd really think it would until you try it - looking down is actually no easier than looking slightly to the left. You still need to adjust your eyes to read it.
Enjoyed your video thanks
You should come to Orkney
Its amazing & wonderful to drive
Cyber attack is probably why card details were removed
I used the Osprey chargers at John O Groats. Expensive , but convenient.
Perhaps I should have done the same. TBH I find JoG to be unpleasant and wanted to get away as quickly as possible!
@@justgetatesla we had fantastic weather at JOG at the end of April.
Shirt sleeve temperature. Clear skies.
Only one other Tesla Y charging. The scenery down to Ullapool was stunning.
I'd love to watch this drive on FSD!
If only we had FSD!
Silly question - of course you can
Be.EV rfid cards work on CPS and they're free
Can you do Scotland to lands end on tesla charger please
Yes
R j symons did it a year ago. 13 hours IIRC.
NC500 looks like it would be a fantastic tour. When you do it I'll be watching every one of those videos you put on TH-cam.
How many 'basically ' can you get in one video 😉
All of them!
@@justgetatesla sorry - I meant to add a 😉
Re your payment problem, I received an email a few months ago from CPS stating that I have to reregister my payment details.
Move from pay monthly to pay on charge. Different payment provider apparently.
Yes and the new system worked fine the one time I have used it since the change over
You don't get good efficiency do you. My Model Y is way more efficient than yours. I am now getting an average of 225. Total average is 264. The update has improved the efficiency quite significantly.
I do drive enthusiastically. Off camera 😏
Some places don't have much traffic to improve "efficiency".
All the warnings signs are there, just like when much of my town lost its internet connection a few months ago, but the sheep continue to blindly follow their masters.
