Treating Frontosa cichlids with Hexamita aka "Malawi bloat"

  • In this video we treat a shoal of Frontosa Cichlids infected with Hexamita. Hexamita is a flagellated protozoal parasite that commonly infects the intestines in many species of fish, especially African Rift Lake Cichlids. The disease can cause bloating of the gut which is why it is sometimes commonly referred to as "Malawi bloat". Hexamita can also cause white poorly formed faeces. A rare presentation of hexamitiasis is shown in this investigation with a fish developing rectal prolapse. We show you how we diagnose and use the different forms of metronidazole to treat against Hexamita in aquarium fish.

    Fantastic videos. Always very informative.
    I had a few questions
    1. What type of water test kit do you use/recommend ?
    2. I’ve primarily only ever seen metro in powder form. As per instructions on bottle they say to do daily water changes. Is that necessary? Does the medication have any affect on the tanks nitrifying bacteria?
    Thank you for sharing these videos. Not a vet or anything near that myself. But I feel like I always get a better understanding.

    Just found out your channel, loved it and watched 10 of them today! :P May I know why is the application of the medication to be injected (into bloodstream or stomach?) instead of being force-feed orally since the Hexamita are in the digestive system? Wouldn't injection be more invasive... and if it's injection into bloodstream how would it help?

    I have a flowerhorn with hexamita. I have dosed his tank with metronidazole and water changes over 6weeks, finally after no more mucusy white poop. He still won't eat. I have given food through a tube and his energy is better. He still won't eat on his own. Water parameters are perfect except tons of ammonia so I do 75% water change. Ammonia goes to zero then it comes back heavy in 2 days. 55gal tank, 1, 6 inch fish.....continue meds? Thoughts? Watch and wait? Thanks.

    • @obsessivecichliddisorder7258
      @obsessivecichliddisorder7258 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Your water parameters are far from perfect if you have ammonia present in the tank. High readings of ammonia is lethal to fish. Sounds like your tank is not cycled.

    • @KellysAdventures305
      @KellysAdventures305 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@obsessivecichliddisorder7258 it was cycled. I was wondering if a sick fish put our more waste. Perhaps the meds crashed the cycle along with multiple water changes. IDK.

    What is the best way to ensure your tools don't damage the fish? I have a small shubunkin goldfish who has recently gotten some issues with eating. She is otherwise normal but spends long times "chewing" her food. Most of the time, a lot of the food is spat back out after this attempted chewing. I feel she has something lodged in her throat, and came looking for a anaesthetic method so I can look down her throat, in her gills, etc. I am worried about using metal tools such as tweezers or any pointed ones, because I worry about cutting or damaging her. She also developed a white filmy looking area on her head this morning that I can't quite identify, but is not consistent with ich. She's been quarantined with esha 2000, exit and gdex (separately) and her tank is cycled. There are no aquatic vets near me at all (I called them all, the vets couldn't even suggest somewhere to look). I'm planning to see what I can find anaesthetic-wise tomorrow, so I can avoid further issues. But I'm still worried about hurting her because she seems small and fragile. I've looked through lots of the Dr's videos, but am still very nervous about taking matters into my own hands. Another goldfish is finished quarantine and ready to join her in the main tank, but I'm holding off until I feel she is healthy.
    Please help if you can! Thanks!

    I have domestic discus with white stringy poo and stopped eating. I even lost one. I dewormed with flubendazole and praziquantel. Still ongoing issues. I don't have a microscope to look at the feces, so my next guess is hexamita. I cannot inject my fish but read/heard from discus experts that treating the tank with 1 gram/20 gallons for 10 consecutive days will treat hexamita. Others say 1 gram/10 gallons. I have a 120 gallon tank with a 20 gallon sump. It's a lot of metronidazole. Can you provide advice?

    I thought metro dissipates within 8 hours or so, so you have to daily dose? Also, how come levamisole can be added to the water for roundworms, yet the metro had to be injected for these spironucleus? Does one absorb better than the other?

I went back to when I first bought the fish and it was a little bit but now the fish turned kind of white in color and my red parrot is getting lighter and her gills look funny. I did put them in a big 150 gallon coming from a 55. She's always hiding and he's kind of hiding too. And when I took a picture it looks like white worms coming out of their gills. There's so many different diseases and I don't know what to do. Please let me know. They are literally my babies. I love them so much. I want to find the right medicine to cure this if I can
