It's like the writers have no idea how to handle race and racism. They don't bother properly writing the faunus because they assume that "They were oppressed" automatically makes them good characters. Not that we were even given the idea that there was oppression in the first place, outside of a history lecture.
I think I get it. It's not about putting characters on there that you hate. It's putting characters on there that are legitimately poorly written. You definitely like Ruby and Blake more than Jacques. But, you can't exactly say he is poorly written. He does a pretty good job of being what he's written to be. An unlikable rich asshole.
I think everyone did. It actually benefited all parties involved. She was tolerable and actually gave the character something that is desperately needed, humility, an actual human trait. Only to have her revert back into the same character she was in vol 3 and go through the same arc she had back then, plan, get too big for her britches, kill someone, then fail.
Mister.Scary I never understand the silly hate for Cinder in Volume 1-3. She's okay. Now in volume 5 is bad, bad, bad plot. At least in 6 they are doing the thing for volume 4 but best. But you get my point, why Cinder is bad in 1-3 and 4? She is only really bad in 5. ;-;
She should’ve aimed it at knocked out Ruby then. Then Weiss could block it with her body and boom you can still develop Jaune and make Cinder motives make sense
Three of the five on this list suffer from the same issue, their menace can be felt and they do make heavy impressions, but their motivations, past and their most recent actions cloud so much of what they've done that it's hard to balance things in the good for them. It's issues that has unevened the overall reception and while there is still room for things to change, it's a shame characters with decent to worthwhile introductions and presence has lost some of that luster in recent years. At least Blake has shown that characters that have fallen can rise up if given the right focus, story, growth and effort.
@ThatKaitoDan RWBY succeeds in creating mystery and intrigue, but fails to deliver on it with answers. Most of these answers are disappointingly disproportionate to the mystery of these characters' motivations or just more M Y S T E R Y . RWBY villains especially, look at Cinder. Just about 6 volumes in and we 1) still don't have a backstory/ motivation 2) No character development for her and 3) The narrative stakes weren't even raised after her tense confrontation with Pyrrha in v3 (Jaune facing Cinder was the dumbest thing in v5). All she is is M Y S T E R Y. She's supposed to leave an impact but she doesn't even compare to how she was back in v3 because at least in that she took down Beacon and Oz before getting rekted by Ruby.
Maybe red like roses 2 but not this life is mine. I'm not entirely sure why i don't like that song very much but I also don't know why every one seems to like that song either. Maybe it played during a forgettable moment?

Rokkfel How did Jaune grow? All he did was stupidly attack Cinder which should’ve ended badly for him and when Weiss was stabbed he saved her with his deus ex machina semblance. Jaune didn’t grow at all in Volume 5 and honestly how they treated him in the end made me hate his character more than like it because they derailed Cinder’s whole revenge plot against Ruby to pretend Jaune is the main character here screwing Ruby out of actually having meaningful focus and interaction.
Leo's fate: He has to hear that terrible line on loop until he dies. "Salem only uses people until they are no longer useful." Leo: PLEASE, MAKE IT STOP!!!!
Seriously, there are so many less awkward ways to word that. For example: "Salem keeps servants who are useful and discards those who are not." It wouldn't be a great line, but still.
@@tdfern1 generic as in a lot of their personalities are extremely cookie cutter lazy archetypes. Ice queen who warms up? Dark brooding emo loner with a mysterious past? Naive young idealist who sees the world in black and white and only cares about stopping the bad guys? These are 90% of what you need to know about the personalities of RWB and yet those are barely outlines of a personality. There's more fleshed out isekai harem characters.
When someone asked Monty's wife, which character she relates to the most she answered with Cinder. I think she described Cinder as Benevolent. Clearly Monty had created a backstory for her. If only the current writers had any idea of what to with what Monty left them maybe Cinder would have turned into a very interesting character.
I think one of the fired RWBY employees said that Monty had a book with everything he wanted in the show, but Miles and Kerry never used it. And when he said something, he was fired. That might not be true, but I heard it from someone.
RWBY should have longer seasons or longer episodes. A lot of RWBY's problems seem related to stuff cut for time so they should solve that. I doubt it would happen, but if cinder survived I'd actually love to see her story go similar to Scar's from Full metal alchemist brotherhood.

Salem I am pretty sure has a reason. She isnt like a bland villain either. She has personality. Adam is growing on me. Cinder only has a little bit originality. Fuck her.

Me personally Hazel deserves a spot as well his motivation for wanting to take down Ozpin is completely weak and hypocritical to the point that whenever he appeared on screen I'd cringe with the exception of when Weiss stabbed him and Blake kicked him I just find it ridiculous that his solution of avenging his belated sister is to work for the leader of what probably killed her plus him calling Ozpin a monster and blaming everyone's death on him despite the fact that he was the one that tried to kill Oscar and Nora and being so blindsided to that just irritates me I understand why he's mad at Ozpin but like Oscar said she made her choice and for Hazel to say that he chose death and try to kill him just shows how ignorant he is I'd honestly feel nothing for him if he died Love your list by the way and I love how Cinder's the thumbnail
God... Hazel was such a cool character before the ending of Volume 5, but they wrecked him just like Cinder. Here's this guy that we know is a bad guy, but he seems to have some degree of honor and isn't just flat out evil like the rest of the crew, plus he has some background with Ozpin... what could be his deal? Oh, his sister is dead, he says Ozpin killed her! Oh, wait... nevermind, she died on a training exercise at Beacon, clearly the headmaster killed her *insert giant eye roll*.
Thomas McCarthy-jones You know Hazel hating Ozpin for “killing” his sister but working for child murderers would’ve worked if he was just a guy who didn’t care or thought about anyone else and is just consumed by his grief and rage to the point he’s willing to kill anyone to get to Ozpin, if they had gone that route then it would’ve come across much better in my opinion, he’s a hypocrite but he just doesn’t care and want to kill Ozpin, instead they don’t acknowledge the hypocrisy at all which leads to him feeling very weak as a character.
Cinder could have had her moment of being a rival and enemy of team RWBY at the academy. Ruby could have taken more of an interest in Cinder and wanted to be her friend while Cinder could have taken interest in Ruby as a potential pawn or convert to her cause. A few episodes could have been dedicated to allowing this friendship to blossom into the poisonous rose it could have been making the assault against Beacon academy that much more devastating for Ruby knowing that a close friend was responsible for the attack. It would have made Ruby's attack against Cinder that much more devastating too knowing that Ruby, whom she was trying to groom into one of her subjects, was the one who hurt her so. Tell me that wouldn't have made their story THAT much more personal and vicious.
Yeah you think Cinder already Knew about Sliver Eyed Warriors that Salem happended To forget to tell Cinder about.. We all Know Salem lied to cinder. Because The Sliver eyes are only Anti Grimm.. They do not take out Maidens.

Honesty, Cinder was one of my favorite characters in the show. I didn't care that she just wanted power and to be feared, she was a very entertaining character to watch in both V2 and 3, whether she was plotting in the shadows or showing off her fighting prowess. Everything I loved about a villain and more. But then Volume 5 happened and turned her into a goddamn joke. Seriously, fuck that volume.
Actually, we do know a bit more about her and I liked how it was hinted: We can assume that she's in her early 20s (personality and the fact that she still blended in, despite being older), that she came from a wealthy house, was well trained in many disciplines, but then hit rock bottom. She's thus able to move both in high society and amongst thieves without feeling uncomfortable. We can also assume that something traumatic must have happened that she's rather be the villain in her own story than victim ever again. Lastly, she does seem to have an aversion against men. She also has a strong animosity towards Atlas and how she said, she was right about you could mean many things, but implies that she and Salem dislike Ozpin for similar reasons. We know all this just from a few sentences and scenes that amount to 20s at most. That's pretty impressive, actually.

Come to think of it, with the "Who are you again?" scene, did Cinder and Jaun even interact before then, apart from maybe briefly seeing eachother? Seems like a very legitimate question for her to be asking.
The thing about most of RWBY's characters is that they are all interesting from the moment they're introduced... but then the more time that's spent on them the worse they get. All of these characters could have been great but the writers didn't seem to have any plans for them, at least not long term. When you write a character you absolutely have to have their motivations, their story arcs, and their backstories all in mind before you even introduce them, even if the audience doesn't know any of that stuff from the start. Cinder should have died at the end of volume 3 IMO, her character was never good but what they ended up doing with her only to seemingly kill her off at the end of Volume 5 just makes her presence in Volumes 4 and 5 seem meaningless, she even got some "development" in Volume 4 and then she reset to the one dimensional bitch that she was in the first 3 volumes. Long rant over but I love this show but all of these characters are the definition of wasted potential.
12:15-12:30 LOLOLOL That whole scene with Jaune shouting at Cinder during the Battle of Haven is some of the best unintentional comedy ever. It's Miles' "teenage boy in the middle of his voice cracking" voice that just kills this moment of Jaune's rage. It makes him sound like he's some pathetic high school nerd crying after Cinder "Mean Girl" Fall stood him up on a date, instead of being face-to-face with the murderer who killed his partner.
A well articulate person with good and constructive criticism ? Who says that Granny in the trailer is a queen and makes a "My man" joke with Cinder and Raven ? I stan. Followed, subscribed, a fan.
I literally just thought of a way for the 8 or so White Fang members with at Adam at Haven work. MAKE THEM ELITE ASSASSINS!!! That would make so much more sense than just random foot soldiers. They could be like the League of Assassins of the White Fang. Just imagine them silently taking down the Mistral Police Force. That would have been so cool and intimidating.
If I were to make my list id replace home with Bad Luck Charm and swap it with Red Like Roses 2. I really enjoy all of the RWBY music but home just seems a bit boring for me. I like slow songs too but Home in particular just doesn't sound amazing to me.

Honestly, I thought Rey and Kylo were better characters in Last Jedi than in Force Awakens. Not saying the movie isn't flawed. But, it definitely succeeded in making me care about the protagonist and antagonist.
Mine would be (Haven’t finished Vol. 6 btw) 5. The Dock fight (Vol. 1) 4. Yang v Mercury (Vol. 3) 3. Pyrrha v Cinder (Vol. 3) 2. Ruby v Neo and Torchwick (Vol. 3) 1. Qrow v Tyrion (Vol. 4) Raven v Cinder was pretty cool to watch even if the Haven battle as a whole was really dumb. Oh and Players and Pieces was an awesome battle even if I wouldn’t consider it a fight scene.
Personally Ruby Rose is still one of my favorite characters. I've always loved her optimism and cute happy self. i honestly have to disagree with people who say she has had little to no character development. Watching Volume 1 and 2 Rwby, she seems like such a different person. She's still happy and optimistic, but I am seriously questioning her sanity. There are moments where she looks dangerously close to snapping or breaking down, but she's been staying strong for everyone else. She's always looking out for everyone like a good leader should, but no one ever asks if she's okay. Ruby is carrying a lot of emotional baggage on her shoulders. She watched two friends die in front of her, she was the one who arrived too late. Her team coming back together might help a bit, but I still feel meeting Salem could finally set off all that emotion she's been carrying. That might be what RoosterTeeth are going for.

She literally feels like a completely different character when she first started. If you remember, she started out not wanting anything to do with friends. I hate hating the show. While I’m watching episodes in the moment I really don’t pay attention to any mistakes, or bad writing, it’s usually when I rewatch episodes and realize how shitty they are, or watching videos like yours. I don’t hate any of the characters, not the heroes, or villains, I love all their concepts, designs (not Adam’s) but when they’re badly written like they are, it’s.. hard to tolerate them, as much as I want to love them. Now whether they’re badly written or not depends. Take Jacque for example. He isn’t badly written because his character is written on how it’s supposed to be. He’s supposed to be a snarky rich asshole, and he is. Bad writing is them trying to give Ruby character development to make her seem more mature when, like you said, she still hasn’t changed from volume one. Not much, anyways.

yep almost everyone could see this list line up coming. I'm surprised you didn't bring up Hazel in the dishonorable mentions or on the list. I felt like in Volume 5 they fucked whatever build up they had in Volume 4 so having him on this list would be more fitting to at least be place on the dishonorable list. But yeah everyone else has a reason to be on this list though I can say for a lot of the characters that is more on the writers not knowing how to write characters than the actual characters themselves. Maybe these characters will get better now that Miles and Kerry are actually being forced to try but considering the shows track record I'm not going to hold my breath. Volume 6 trailer looks good but then again a trailer and the actual Volume can go in very different directions.

You know, maybe it's just me being a Devil May Cry fan, but to me it looks like RWBY tried three different times to give us a character reminiscent of Vergil from that series. We got Adam who kinda looks like Vergil, Cinder who kinda has his obsession with power, and Raven who kinda has the same family issues as him.
Ruby and Blake are actually two of my favorite characters; Blake because I actually think she’s really cool, and Ruby because, well, she’s really fun. Couldn’t agree more about Adam and Cinder though (My two most hated characters in the series).

Adam is the sickest fucking character style wise and them making him obsessed Blake is actually the worst thing. Like, he straight says he doesn't give a fuck about Blake in Vol.2, but then she's his top priority later on? Fuck that. Just have him focus on Faunus supremacy and taking down humans. Give him a more Magneto style ideology or something. He deserves better.
Adam should've been written as Blake's mentor not some psychopath loser of an ex-boyfriend. He should've focus on attacking humans for Faunx kind. But the writer REALLY fucked him over so badly that it's not even funny. x.x Adam did not deserve this.
Don’t know if you knew this or not but this entire month there has been a RWBY Song Tournament hosted by RT Radio on Twitter where all RWBY songs go head to head. They’re now in the final four with them being This Will be the Day, I Burn, Red Like Roses Part 2, and This Life is Mine. I’m satisfied with this but a lot of good songs got kicked out far to early like Sacrifice.
I agree with most of your points... however, I do have a thing to point out. The world of RWBY created a world where the main four are only the main characters because they just so happen to be in the right place at the right time more often than most and will most likely continue to do so since they are in so deep. That being said, I’m not sure if the villain having specific attachments to the main cast is necessary. I feel like the point was that Pyrrha died for nothing. She wasn’t important and didn’t contribute. She wanted to be this destined hero, but died only achieving this sense of being a martyr and motivation for the RWBY and JNPR team, Jaune particularly. Sure, it would have been nice for RWBY to fight Cinder. A satisfying fight that would make sense, since she became the main threat after volume 1 until volume 4. However, there was no real narrative reason for Cinder to care about Team RWBY specifically except for Ruby herself. Of course that could set up the team fighting to protect RWBY, but Cinder beat a maiden without having maiden powers and then Ozpin with Maiden powers. The fight would have had to have been forced due to the differences in power levels. It is because of these obvious differences in destructive power that completely separates them. They don’t have the most reliable way to level up, considering they are always traveling and fighting Grimm in an uncontrolled environment like one of the official schools who managed to produce the ridiculous team CFVY in a year. At least I think they were a year above. They have been learning new tricks and skills, but Ruby’s speed hardly matters against the likes of Winter, Qrow, Tyrian, and many other far more experienced fighters. Even Emerald and Mercury are in an environment where they can be taught and honed by one of the world’s most dangerous people. Now that they have Ozpin, it will be far easier, but they weren’t ready in volume 5.
I never thought of it that way, but it makes sense. Of RWBY and JNPR, the most skilled fighter was obviously Pyrrah, and Cinder killed her. And she'd have only gotten stronger after further training from Salem and acclimating to her powers. Therefore, she was stopped not by the main cast, which would have probably been much worse for the story, having to explain such a large power increase, but a third party that was just another version of her, just with several more years worth of experience. Then, since there's obviously no way for the main cast to beat said third party through power, she's defeated through words and ideologies. In the end, regardless of the quality of the storytelling, I think this was the only logical end to this arc based on Cinder's power level. Pre-maiden Cinder vs Pyrrah, I feel, would be pretty much even based on their fight.
Honestly expected Jaune and Whitley to at least have honorable mentions. Not that I dislike Jaune or anything, but I know he isn't the favorite of very many people. I was also expecting Jacques and Team CRDL to be on the top 5. But, I guess it's all about how they are written. And Jacques and CRDL are written in the way they are supposed to be, a rich asshole and 1 dimensional bullies. They do that job pretty well.
She's definitely not the best but I wouldn't call Cinder the worst character. Better to wait until her backstory is revealed before we can make that judgement or more scenes of her operating on her own. Same with Ruby and Salem...well we have backstory on Salem now anyway.
I think Leo could’ve been interesting and if he was written as a double agent and we saw him constantly struggling and flipping sides because he doesn’t want to betray his friends but doesn’t have the guts to stand up to Salem.
I actually like Cinder don’t hate me for saying that we may not know her motivation I just think she’s just cool I also really like the joke when she uses her Grimm arm on vernal and it’s like FEEL THE RATH OF MY SPOOKY ARM (I died when I saw that I’m just happy Cinder is alive)

In my personal opinion, while I pretty much agree with exactly who you picked, including the dishonorable mentions, i would move around some of their placements. For example, putting blake at #6-7 while Ruby id put at #2 (cinder still #1 tho). But basically, if I had to put it into 3 words to sum up this entire video: Volume 5 sucks. Cept for Blake.....cause unlike everyone else volume 5 helped her
I would honestly not say that volumes 4-5 blake was good. Her character suddenly did a full 180 and she was insulting and slapping sun around for no reason. She was pretty much just whining and sitting on her ass the whole time
I dont really have an issue with Blake and how shes been handled throughout the show. People misjudge her as a complete loner, but really its more just trust issues, for obviously understandable reasons now. She may have been serious, but she was never opposed to a bit of fun and Ruby as a leader is bound to bring some lighthearted fun out of any stick-in-the-mud, so the couple bits in V1/2 were fine. She grew more comfortable with her friends and therefore more confident, but after the fall of Beacon and Adam dismembering Yang, she was obviously and naturally going to regress on her old ways as she blamed herself. Back home however, between her parents consoling her and Sun's commentary on trusting her friends, Blake got out of her funk and they banded together to help save Mistral. I dont necessarily think shes the best in the show, but certainly not the worst. Frankly, I would have dedicated a spot for Hazel. Once again, an intriguing mysterious character all but ruined in execution once we found out how goddamned hypocritical he is

She overgoes an arc for her personality and improves as a person. And then its all fucked up. She becomes abusive to her friends, selfish to the highest degree while pretending that SHE is the victim and some sort of saviour for what she did. That is without mentioning the reveal that she is basically a fucking princess yet complains about how bad things are. From a mysterious grounded character with issues, she turns into a whiny self-centered bitch whose complaints dont make sense and end up in her starting to generalize and manipulate people for her own ends (Something she is supposed to abhor!). Hazel has not been seen enough. Yea, hes bad, but Blake is worse, especially with the time that was given to her. She is one of the worst written characters in the show, even Ruby being underwritten is better than her.

Andrius Butikis No I’d be happy to, but going on a curse filled tirade shows your pretty set in your opinion, which is fine, but I disagree. For one, Blake is no princess, she’s the daughter of a civil rights leader. MLKs kids were not prince/princesses of black people. Ghira lived on the move while leading the White Fang, under attack by racist humans like we saw in the Adam short. They did not live a life of luxury until Ghira stepped down and settled as Menageries chieftain, aka when Blake left her family because she viewed them as cowardly. *She never had that life*.
+Fireheart47 Ghira is the leader of Menagerie. He is leading an entire state. While he was a civil rights leader he was also a leader of what can be considered a city state. Also, we do not know if Ghira lived on the move or not. We saw only one scene of them moving (May i remind you that they already wore Grimm masks and carried assault rifles too?) and get attacked. It is not an indication if this always happening. Not to mention that this only one part of this entire thing.
I think it would be interesting if Thomas made a new list now that some of these characters seem to be making steps in the right direction. (Blake, Adam, and even Cinder according to his Vol. 7 review.)
Huh, Salem, Ozpin, and Oscar arn't even in the dishonorable mentions, I guess Thomas can still surprise me, thought we all guess the number one spot correctly, great video. Raven is the my pick for the worst, it makes total sense that a lot of her parts were cut because their is no logic to her actions, like at all.

I think everyone did. It actually benefited all parties involved. She was tolerable and actually gave the character something that is desperately needed, humility, an actual human trait. Only to have her revert back into the same character she was in vol 3 and go through the same arc she had back then, plan, get too big for her britches, kill someone, then fail.

Three of the five on this list suffer from the same issue, their menace can be felt and they do make heavy impressions, but their motivations, past and their most recent actions cloud so much of what they've done that it's hard to balance things in the good for them. It's issues that has unevened the overall reception and while there is still room for things to change, it's a shame characters with decent to worthwhile introductions and presence has lost some of that luster in recent years.
At least Blake has shown that characters that have fallen can rise up if given the right focus, story, growth and effort.
@ThatKaitoDan RWBY succeeds in creating mystery and intrigue, but fails to deliver on it with answers. Most of these answers are disappointingly disproportionate to the mystery of these characters' motivations or just more M Y S T E R Y . RWBY villains especially, look at Cinder. Just about 6 volumes in and we 1) still don't have a backstory/ motivation 2) No character development for her and 3) The narrative stakes weren't even raised after her tense confrontation with Pyrrha in v3 (Jaune facing Cinder was the dumbest thing in v5). All she is is M Y S T E R Y.
She's supposed to leave an impact but she doesn't even compare to how she was back in v3 because at least in that she took down Beacon and Oz before getting rekted by Ruby.

Jaune didn’t grow at all in Volume 5 and honestly how they treated him in the end made me hate his character more than like it because they derailed Cinder’s whole revenge plot against Ruby to pretend Jaune is the main character here screwing Ruby out of actually having meaningful focus and interaction.

These are 90% of what you need to know about the personalities of RWB and yet those are barely outlines of a personality. There's more fleshed out isekai harem characters.
When someone asked Monty's wife, which character she relates to the most she answered with Cinder. I think she described Cinder as Benevolent. Clearly Monty had created a backstory for her. If only the current writers had any idea of what to with what Monty left them maybe Cinder would have turned into a very interesting character.

God... Hazel was such a cool character before the ending of Volume 5, but they wrecked him just like Cinder. Here's this guy that we know is a bad guy, but he seems to have some degree of honor and isn't just flat out evil like the rest of the crew, plus he has some background with Ozpin... what could be his deal? Oh, his sister is dead, he says Ozpin killed her! Oh, wait... nevermind, she died on a training exercise at Beacon, clearly the headmaster killed her *insert giant eye roll*.

Cinder could have had her moment of being a rival and enemy of team RWBY at the academy. Ruby could have taken more of an interest in Cinder and wanted to be her friend while Cinder could have taken interest in Ruby as a potential pawn or convert to her cause. A few episodes could have been dedicated to allowing this friendship to blossom into the poisonous rose it could have been making the assault against Beacon academy that much more devastating for Ruby knowing that a close friend was responsible for the attack. It would have made Ruby's attack against Cinder that much more devastating too knowing that Ruby, whom she was trying to groom into one of her subjects, was the one who hurt her so. Tell me that wouldn't have made their story THAT much more personal and vicious.

Honesty, Cinder was one of my favorite characters in the show. I didn't care that she just wanted power and to be feared, she was a very entertaining character to watch in both V2 and 3, whether she was plotting in the shadows or showing off her fighting prowess. Everything I loved about a villain and more. But then Volume 5 happened and turned her into a goddamn joke.

Actually, we do know a bit more about her and I liked how it was hinted:
We can assume that she's in her early 20s (personality and the fact that she still blended in, despite being older), that she came from a wealthy house, was well trained in many disciplines, but then hit rock bottom. She's thus able to move both in high society and amongst thieves without feeling uncomfortable. We can also assume that something traumatic must have happened that she's rather be the villain in her own story than victim ever again. Lastly, she does seem to have an aversion against men. She also has a strong animosity towards Atlas and how she said, she was right about you could mean many things, but implies that she and Salem dislike Ozpin for similar reasons.
We know all this just from a few sentences and scenes that amount to 20s at most. That's pretty impressive, actually.

The thing about most of RWBY's characters is that they are all interesting from the moment they're introduced... but then the more time that's spent on them the worse they get. All of these characters could have been great but the writers didn't seem to have any plans for them, at least not long term. When you write a character you absolutely have to have their motivations, their story arcs, and their backstories all in mind before you even introduce them, even if the audience doesn't know any of that stuff from the start. Cinder should have died at the end of volume 3 IMO, her character was never good but what they ended up doing with her only to seemingly kill her off at the end of Volume 5 just makes her presence in Volumes 4 and 5 seem meaningless, she even got some "development" in Volume 4 and then she reset to the one dimensional bitch that she was in the first 3 volumes. Long rant over but I love this show but all of these characters are the definition of wasted potential.

It's Miles' "teenage boy in the middle of his voice cracking" voice that just kills this moment of Jaune's rage. It makes him sound like he's some pathetic high school nerd crying after Cinder "Mean Girl" Fall stood him up on a date, instead of being face-to-face with the murderer who killed his partner.

Personally Ruby Rose is still one of my favorite characters. I've always loved her optimism and cute happy self.
i honestly have to disagree with people who say she has had little to no character development. Watching Volume 1 and 2 Rwby, she seems like such a different person. She's still happy and optimistic, but I am seriously questioning her sanity. There are moments where she looks dangerously close to snapping or breaking down, but she's been staying strong for everyone else. She's always looking out for everyone like a good leader should, but no one ever asks if she's okay.
Ruby is carrying a lot of emotional baggage on her shoulders. She watched two friends die in front of her, she was the one who arrived too late. Her team coming back together might help a bit, but I still feel meeting Salem could finally set off all that emotion she's been carrying. That might be what RoosterTeeth are going for.
No she's literally a basic and boring bitch. She's worse than Kairi from Kingdom Hearts. In fact the only people who tend to really love her are guys like you.. who write like 7 paragraphs about shit that doesn't really matter lol.

I hate hating the show. While I’m watching episodes in the moment I really don’t pay attention to any mistakes, or bad writing, it’s usually when I rewatch episodes and realize how shitty they are, or watching videos like yours. I don’t hate any of the characters, not the heroes, or villains, I love all their concepts, designs (not Adam’s) but when they’re badly written like they are, it’s.. hard to tolerate them, as much as I want to love them. Now whether they’re badly written or not depends. Take Jacque for example. He isn’t badly written because his character is written on how it’s supposed to be. He’s supposed to be a snarky rich asshole, and he is. Bad writing is them trying to give Ruby character development to make her seem more mature when, like you said, she still hasn’t changed from volume one. Not much, anyways.

yep almost everyone could see this list line up coming. I'm surprised you didn't bring up Hazel in the dishonorable mentions or on the list. I felt like in Volume 5 they fucked whatever build up they had in Volume 4 so having him on this list would be more fitting to at least be place on the dishonorable list. But yeah everyone else has a reason to be on this list though I can say for a lot of the characters that is more on the writers not knowing how to write characters than the actual characters themselves. Maybe these characters will get better now that Miles and Kerry are actually being forced to try but considering the shows track record I'm not going to hold my breath. Volume 6 trailer looks good but then again a trailer and the actual Volume can go in very different directions.

You know, maybe it's just me being a Devil May Cry fan, but to me it looks like RWBY tried three different times to give us a character reminiscent of Vergil from that series. We got Adam who kinda looks like Vergil, Cinder who kinda has his obsession with power, and Raven who kinda has the same family issues as him.
I hate what they did to Adam. He had so much fucking potential to be a good antagonist and they ruined him. Truly a shame.

Don’t know if you knew this or not but this entire month there has been a RWBY Song Tournament hosted by RT Radio on Twitter where all RWBY songs go head to head. They’re now in the final four with them being This Will be the Day, I Burn, Red Like Roses Part 2, and This Life is Mine. I’m satisfied with this but a lot of good songs got kicked out far to early like Sacrifice.
I agree with most of your points... however, I do have a thing to point out. The world of RWBY created a world where the main four are only the main characters because they just so happen to be in the right place at the right time more often than most and will most likely continue to do so since they are in so deep. That being said, I’m not sure if the villain having specific attachments to the main cast is necessary. I feel like the point was that Pyrrha died for nothing. She wasn’t important and didn’t contribute. She wanted to be this destined hero, but died only achieving this sense of being a martyr and motivation for the RWBY and JNPR team, Jaune particularly. Sure, it would have been nice for RWBY to fight Cinder. A satisfying fight that would make sense, since she became the main threat after volume 1 until volume 4. However, there was no real narrative reason for Cinder to care about Team RWBY specifically except for Ruby herself. Of course that could set up the team fighting to protect RWBY, but Cinder beat a maiden without having maiden powers and then Ozpin with Maiden powers. The fight would have had to have been forced due to the differences in power levels. It is because of these obvious differences in destructive power that completely separates them. They don’t have the most reliable way to level up, considering they are always traveling and fighting Grimm in an uncontrolled environment like one of the official schools who managed to produce the ridiculous team CFVY in a year. At least I think they were a year above. They have been learning new tricks and skills, but Ruby’s speed hardly matters against the likes of Winter, Qrow, Tyrian, and many other far more experienced fighters. Even Emerald and Mercury are in an environment where they can be taught and honed by one of the world’s most dangerous people. Now that they have Ozpin, it will be far easier, but they weren’t ready in volume 5.
I never thought of it that way, but it makes sense. Of RWBY and JNPR, the most skilled fighter was obviously Pyrrah, and Cinder killed her. And she'd have only gotten stronger after further training from Salem and acclimating to her powers.
Therefore, she was stopped not by the main cast, which would have probably been much worse for the story, having to explain such a large power increase, but a third party that was just another version of her, just with several more years worth of experience. Then, since there's obviously no way for the main cast to beat said third party through power, she's defeated through words and ideologies. In the end, regardless of the quality of the storytelling, I think this was the only logical end to this arc based on Cinder's power level.
Pre-maiden Cinder vs Pyrrah, I feel, would be pretty much even based on their fight.

Honestly expected Jaune and Whitley to at least have honorable mentions. Not that I dislike Jaune or anything, but I know he isn't the favorite of very many people. I was also expecting Jacques and Team CRDL to be on the top 5. But, I guess it's all about how they are written. And Jacques and CRDL are written in the way they are supposed to be, a rich asshole and 1 dimensional bullies. They do that job pretty well.
She's definitely not the best but I wouldn't call Cinder the worst character.
Better to wait until her backstory is revealed before we can make that judgement or more scenes of her operating on her own.
Same with Ruby and Salem...well we have backstory on Salem now anyway.
Season 5 ending fight for blake was bad. She came to stop him and then to his face says that that hes not important.
I think Leo could’ve been interesting and if he was written as a double agent and we saw him constantly struggling and flipping sides because he doesn’t want to betray his friends but doesn’t have the guts to stand up to Salem.
I actually like Cinder don’t hate me for saying that we may not know her motivation I just think she’s just cool
I also really like the joke when she uses her Grimm arm on vernal and it’s like FEEL THE RATH OF MY SPOOKY ARM (I died when I saw that I’m just happy Cinder is alive)
Why is Raven here? She is one of the characters that has GOOD writing, even though she's only important for like, half a volume.

In my personal opinion, while I pretty much agree with exactly who you picked, including the dishonorable mentions, i would move around some of their placements. For example, putting blake at #6-7 while Ruby id put at #2 (cinder still #1 tho).
But basically, if I had to put it into 3 words to sum up this entire video: Volume 5 sucks. Cept for Blake.....cause unlike everyone else volume 5 helped her
I would honestly not say that volumes 4-5 blake was good. Her character suddenly did a full 180 and she was insulting and slapping sun around for no reason. She was pretty much just whining and sitting on her ass the whole time
I dont really have an issue with Blake and how shes been handled throughout the show. People misjudge her as a complete loner, but really its more just trust issues, for obviously understandable reasons now. She may have been serious, but she was never opposed to a bit of fun and Ruby as a leader is bound to bring some lighthearted fun out of any stick-in-the-mud, so the couple bits in V1/2 were fine. She grew more comfortable with her friends and therefore more confident, but after the fall of Beacon and Adam dismembering Yang, she was obviously and naturally going to regress on her old ways as she blamed herself. Back home however, between her parents consoling her and Sun's commentary on trusting her friends, Blake got out of her funk and they banded together to help save Mistral.
I dont necessarily think shes the best in the show, but certainly not the worst. Frankly, I would have dedicated a spot for Hazel. Once again, an intriguing mysterious character all but ruined in execution once we found out how goddamned hypocritical he is

Its not really about misjudgement. She is not liked because she is a bitch, she is badly written and an unlikeable character at all.
When we did not know about her much in Volumes 1-3, she was good, a down to earth character that knows about the darker side of fighting. She overgoes an arc for her personality and improves as a person. And then its all fucked up.
She becomes abusive to her friends, selfish to the highest degree while pretending that SHE is the victim and some sort of saviour for what she did. That is without mentioning the reveal that she is basically a fucking princess yet complains about how bad things are. From a mysterious grounded character with issues, she turns into a whiny self-centered bitch whose complaints dont make sense and end up in her starting to generalize and manipulate people for her own ends (Something she is supposed to abhor!).
Hazel has not been seen enough. Yea, hes bad, but Blake is worse, especially with the time that was given to her. She is one of the worst written characters in the show, even Ruby being underwritten is better than her.

For one, Blake is no princess, she’s the daughter of a civil rights leader. MLKs kids were not prince/princesses of black people.
Ghira lived on the move while leading the White Fang, under attack by racist humans like we saw in the Adam short. They did not live a life of luxury until Ghira stepped down and settled as Menageries chieftain, aka when Blake left her family because she viewed them as cowardly. *She never had that life*.

Ghira is the leader of Menagerie. He is leading an entire state. While he was a civil rights leader he was also a leader of what can be considered a city state. Also, we do not know if Ghira lived on the move or not. We saw only one scene of them moving (May i remind you that they already wore Grimm masks and carried assault rifles too?) and get attacked. It is not an indication if this always happening. Not to mention that this only one part of this entire thing.
I think it would be interesting if Thomas made a new list now that some of these characters seem to be making steps in the right direction. (Blake, Adam, and even Cinder according to his Vol. 7 review.)

Adam was the only vilain that got shit done. At least until he got one hitted by blake, which was ridiculous. I liked his part in Vol 6 ep1 tbh
Huh, Salem, Ozpin, and Oscar arn't even in the dishonorable mentions, I guess Thomas can still surprise me, thought we all guess the number one spot correctly, great video. Raven is the my pick for the worst, it makes total sense that a lot of her parts were cut because their is no logic to her actions, like at all.
Cinder on s1 to s3 was a nice, scary, intimidating villain.. S4 onwards she was pathetic
