    1) THEY NEED MORE WRITERS AND MORE TIME, AND ACTUALLY REVIEW AND REVISE THE SCRIPTS
    2) THEY NEED TO FINISH OR MOSTLY COMPLETE ARCS BEFORE MOVING TO ANOTHER FREAKING ARC
    3) THEY NEED TO LET THE ANIMATORS BE CREATIVE WITH FIGHTS
so basically, I agree with all the points made in the video

Honestly, the problem with Blake is that she wasn't finished as a character before the show aired, and there are several places in the script where it shows in the worst way. For starters, as the daughter of the former leader of the white fang, there is no way she could have hidden in plain sight the way she did. It would never have worked, and like she told Sun, she was at the front of every rally, took part in every boycott, and when the white fang went rogue, Blake was still apart of it. When the robberies in season 1 take place in such frequency, she should have been questioned by police for being such a prolific suspect. Hell, she never even changed her name or clothes. Dead givaway. Also, during the fight at the docks, she took her bow off before addressing the white fang members. This is done so that the audience can see her expose herself and so that the gunmen can lower their guard in the presence of another faunus. This, however, makes no sense when you again consider that she should be know by sight alone. Exposing her ears would be unnecessary because as white fang members they should be familiar with the VERY ACTIVE DAUGHTER OF THE FORMER CHIEF. She wouldn't need to prove her faunas heritage, it would be known. The high ranking faunus Weiss fought on the train, hell, Roman Torchwick should have known, as closely as he was working with the white fang. And yet none of her enemies exploit this trait of hers. Finally, someone in Blake's position would have never agreed to participate in the Vital Festival. She's in hiding!!! Having her face all over every broadcast screen would have been the worst idea. Too much exposure for someone hiding from Adam and the White Fang.
TL;DR : Blake being the daughter of the former white fang leader was added to her character after season 3, and that's why she doesn't make any sense, she was changed halfway through. That, or they were so intent on hiding this fact that they ignored this vital (pun) piece of info that would have drastically changed her character.

When Blake's dad was in charge, the white fang were peaceful. She was at the front of every rally, but she was holding signs, not robbing or murdering. Perhaps when the white fang began to turn, she stepped more into the background, being forgotten as she aged. That may be why she was able to hide in plain sight?

7:08 As much as I dislike how Yang dealing with trauma has been skipped over so much, I'm actually hopeful with these panic attacks that come and go, because that's the actual nature of panic attacks and PTSD. They can come and go in certain situations, and resolution can come years after the actual incident. I'm hoping they go the route they took with Korra in Book 4, where the first time she thought she'd dealt with her trauma was a false flag, and part of her overcoming the problem was realizing how long it would take. Even by the end of the series, she flat out says she never actually feels 'okay' or 'over it.'

    • @aliciadrigo3277
      @aliciadrigo3277 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

This.writing PTSD in fiction has, IMO the same issues as writing depression. PTSD is not one of those things where there is a strict guideline of symptoms. PTSD affects different people in different ways and those people often have different coping tactics too . This clashes against what is expected of good stories which is a consistent narrative, characters depth/arcs etc. how is anyone supposed to write that without it coming off to the viewers as inconsistent? The only i see is that if the author took the time carefully research PTSD by actually finding people who are affected by it.

@@michaelflores9220 Yang's hand was shaking... When she was confronting the man who took her arm. Her hand was just shaking... I'm not an expert in PTSD, but don't you think she'd fucking break down or at least have some other effect if she met the cause of her traumatic experience? Do you seriously think, her hand fucking shaking is a good representation of PTSD? Are you that daft? Hell, the PTSD barely effected her character and yes it did go away. She literally hasn't brought it up nor have her 'symptoms' shown. Even then, her hand shaking didn't really effect much, as at the end of the day she was still largely the same character, and during the fight with the cause of her traumatic experience, she was capable of pulling off technical moves and fought competently. Never once did her trauma become anymore than a minor inconvenience in the story, it didn't result in a character arc, she never struggled to fight or reconnect with her friends, the only thing showing she had it, was her FUCKING HAND SHAKING.
I'm sorry for getting angry, but it's just honestly upsetting to see this poor excuse for a representation of PTSD getting defended

If I must be honest: Mystery is something that can be so great and intriguing if done right in a story. There are 2 stories that I absolutely love and I think are prime examples of how to have such amazing mystery in your story: The Lord of The Rings and Harry Potter. In the case of TLOTRs, we always have this feeling that when we read the books or watch the films that we entered into such a grounded and fleshed out world packed full of mystery and intrigue. Whenever I read or watch The Return of The King, most specifically the scene when Frodo, Sam and Gollum come across Minas Morgul, I always get this chilling feeling when it's described and shown to us, and I end up having such a burning (but not frustrating) question as to what may lay behind it's ghostly illuminated gates. And for the case of Harry Potter, right when you enter it's world you get this feeling of wonder and are just amazed that indeed Magic is real. And the mystery is just so interesting and ripe full of intrigue (and quite a few times those questions you have are answered in satisfying ways). But what I think I love the most about J.K Rowling's and Tolkien's use of mystery is the fact that while a good chunk of questions are answered (most importantly the ones that are kept being brought up and serve the story), there is still some that will forever be left up to speculation and theory, and they will probably never be answered. And I hope that Kerry and Miles take lessons from this. But that's just me! :)

    • @FlowersofJannah
      @FlowersofJannah 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

Keeping a sense of mystery in a story whilst still answering some questions is actually a story telling technique known by authors! I think your explanation of RWBY's problems with exposition and mystery are very spot on and I agree 100%. Lately it seems almost every episode, somebody is explaining for ten minutes how the world works, and answers questions that should be left unanswered, whilst ignoring questions they should be asking that are important to the story and to character development.

This a clear, concise analysis of what's currently not good about RWBY. If Rooster Teeth wants the audience to keep being interested in their version of RWBY, the writers need to stop restricting the animators. Also, Miles and Kerry REALLY need to reconsider all of the mediocre plot twists that they've been teasing for ages: Ozpin, Salem, the Relics, the Silver Eyes, team STRQ, and Summer Rose's death. They're trying to keep things a mystery to build suspense and drama, but the longer they keep this essential information from the audience, the more anticlimactic the reveals will be. Just look at what happened to Hazel. When I first saw him, I wondered why a seemingly decent person would work for Salem, the literal devil of Remnant. But when Volume 5 gave us the answer, it was absurdly anticlimactic. Ozpin sums up Hazel's backstory with a few sentences, and Hazel becomes an unintentionally comical villain who says: "I'LL KILL YOU! I'LL KILL YOU DEAD!" The writers have told us that they're listening to criticism, but they also said that right before they gave us Volume 5, so I'm going to lower my expectations for Volume 6.

I honestly feel as if Rwby didn't need Salem, relics, maidens, magic, etc. It feels like it was added for the sake of adding it, feeling ultimately pointless after volume 3.
I would've been cool with just maidens, but that's just me but Honestly I don't know why M&K think all of this was really required to make a good show. They have a fantastic world on their own that they could do just about anything they could think of with, fanfiction alone proves this, but they don't need a save the world plot or God's and magical mystery to pull people in and keep them interested and I don't think that's what Monty would've intended.
However M&K knew him far more well that I every would but he seems more like a fluid kinda guy with a fluid story which it was in the first 3 volumes where as onwards seems far to linear somewhat bland story. Also it seems pretty light hearted by comparison to his other works like RvB, or Dead Fantasy, tho I think it was supposed to get darker over time, but anyway I just wonder what do they have planned next with this storyline.

I think the thing M&K didn't quite grasp is that no one was expecting an epic in the vein of ATLA or One Piece or Game of Thrones from RWBY after they watched Volume 1. Hell, after they watched the first episode. What people saw and liked about the show was the heart put into it, the clear effort and passion put into the project. I'm sure some of the more important epic concepts were developing on the back burner, but what I remember most about the first two volumes (which was when I picked it up) was that they weren't exactly ~good~, conventionally speaking, but they were fun. They were enjoyable. There was a story with real potential beneath all the problems. I don't know if the showrunners realize that was the show's main draw, given volume 5. I hope they have that figured out.
Also, editing. They need a better editor or they need to fix an algorithm in maia or something, because their shots linger, just. All the time. Even in the trailer, which was supposed to be a hype thing, seemed to have slow editing. Or maybe just too many fades? I'm honestly not sure but they need to fix it.

Well, Chapter 1 was rather well done and seemed to be pretty high quality, so I'm going to try being optimistic. I was concerned with Volume 5 from the very first chapter, as son as they restored to using stills in the first couple minutes (seriously, it looked like they threw in concept art and intended to replace it with models later). We get a bit of action that flows really well and doesn't seem at all hindered by the small bits of conversation in the same sequence (unlike Volume 5, where the last 4 chapters felt overly drawn-out and lacking any real stakes or impact outside of the Raven v Cinder fight). I'm in the same boat as Unicorn of War - RWBY has a special place in my heart and I'm not willing to be blind to its faults, but I do honestly hope they learn from their past mistakes and given the quality level of this first Chapter, it's going to be heartbreaking if it falls apart like Volume 5 did.

I also think the characters lack emotions and development throughout the series. I feel as if ruby could've been more sad and angered for the reasons of her mothers death and leading onto pyrrahs-pennys, she could also be more questioning about her eyes. Yang and Blake could've been more angered and maybe PTSD due to what they've experienced with Adam and fighting in general. Weiss could simply be more angered due to her family issues.
Anyway I also I think we need more in tell on Ruby's mom Summer Rose bc we know nothing about her, but her silver eyes and maybe a connection through Qrow.
    So yeah ...
characters need more development and emotions, this show just needs time and patience.

I certainly agree with the mystery point. I was personally very disappointed that all Jaune got was a healing symblance skill. It really annoyed me and I wanted him to be able to play a deeper role in combat, rather than just a, "strategist". Especially since he's got one of the simplest weapons, imagine what he could do if his semblance enabled him to use his sword and shield (and greatsword form) in all new ways. But nope. Got assigned to be a side-healer for the group, all because he's got a lot of aura to give.

Very spot on. I hope they're listening. I love rwby conceptually and the character designs are great generally. Writing well is unfortunately hard.
Volumes 1 and 2 are easier to forgive because of the underdog status the show had and the kinetic fight scenes are fun, but they suffered from poorly executed cliche anime tropes. Volume 3 had a great finale but it rushed right into a climax that the story really wasn't ready for. Thete was srtill so much to do that wasnt done yet. By volume 4 expectations are set and People want volume 3 climax-tier writing. People wanted it to be better. The show has made them so much money so they should have more effort going into it. There were issues in volume 4 but it was mostly competent and got them to volume 5, but there they proceeded to fall flat on their face with it because of all the flaws building up.
They need to focus on telling a story they want to tell instead of merely trying to court the anime watching crowd for cash.

One recomendation as you said is to extend the time between volumes so the can make a better plot but also to make more episodes per volume like in red vs blue (19 episodes per season). And the bit at the end is exactly why you're the only RWBY critic I actually pay attention to. You like the show, and you don't make personal attacks against the people making them, instead merely acknowledging that mistakes have been made. I'm going to disagree with your ranking, however; not having enough time and money to do things right is absolutely the #1 problem with RWBY. There's so much they haven't been able to do because of constraints, and V5 especially lost so much because everything that wasn't Raven v Cinder during the Battle of Haven was on rushed production and a shoestring budget. More time would give the people waiting for secrets to be revealed something to tide them over and let the producers refine the fights and character arcs, and focus. And if they can't get more time, than bringing in more people so they can get more done in less time is a step in the right direction. I'm desparately hoping RWBY eventually gets a live-action adaptation like Avatar: The Last Airbender is getting, where they can make the story what it could have been had they been able to devote sufficient time and money to it from the start.

Well, the hard part about that mystery is that, the change between mystery and exposition was very abrupt. It went from "ooh, mysterious villain who might have a justification for her actions" in Part 3 to "Well, there's these two very stereotypical good and bad gods, and Salem is a manifestation of the bad, oh, and there's these four magical mcguffins that represent each season at each of the academies that we have to protect, oh yeah, and and ozpin moves bodies, and caused a lot of bad things to happen, but they were all for the greater good." in Vol. 4/5. They just dumped a whole lot of exposition on us after keeping us all in the dark for 3 years, all of which seems very stereotypical for a show in the genre. It's all probably just as much of a result as that rushed production you were talking about.

While it's clear many issues with the show come from the lack of time and communication allowed for the animators rarely do people touch on that specific element (regardless of how well or badly handled the animation team is if they have a bad storyboard and inconsistencies the animations will suffer as a consequence)

Yeah I know that receiving harsh reactions and comments from fans can be frustating, also I have seen some times the creators admiting the show flaws and acknowledging some of the criticism and telling fans that they are going to fix those issues. I'm thankful you pointed out the "years" issue. The anime world evolves around seasons so theres always new and repeating shows to watch. Alot aren't given a second season. Because R.T is privately owned and rwby its cash cow it doesnt suffer that threat. With that said any anime would have a good plot and depth if granted 6 years. The show is only currently getting to an actual point and is worshipped by fans as a piece of gold that can do no wrong.
The thing to any fan is that's 6 years of your life and me, I naturally analyze what I watch while I'm watching. Its who I am. I cant turn my brain off or just enjoy/accept things. I criticize everything even the shows I love because as you said, we criticize cause we care.

I full on agree with these points. While personally I do hate the fact that the newer volumes tend to rely more on shocking and suspenseful cliffhangers that tend to go almost nowhere or just lose their impact the very next episode, (excluding volume 3 because it at least tried to put impact in what happened) my biggest problems with the series is the consistent yearly volume release, the dodging of important questions, and the unfocused story or unimportant character arcs getting so much time. I have full on loved RWBY for its action, comedy and characters in the past, and even still do to this day. But sadly, not as much anymore. I have a rwby poster in my room, a pumpkin pete hoodie I wear in the winter, and many of the volumes on disc because I have enjoyed the series that much. so I say this out of care for the series, as well as the people behind it. *TAKE. A. BREAK.* there's no harm in coming back when you're ready. Constantly coming out with volume after volume can lead to a series that goes downhill and hits the burnout phase (which is a phase that every creator who constantly works, like i have in the past, will go through. If you don't stop to think about your creation, it won't end up as good as it could have been.). When the newest season of My Hero Academia is finished, I don't expect another one next year, I expect it when they can finish it. I shouldn't have to get notified that the newest volume of RWBY is right around the corner every year, I want to get notified that they're working hard on it, and will release it when they can finish it. Quality over quantity should be the goal here, not quantity over quality.

I'd kind of rather Ruby have genuine issues rather than be a perfect ideal. Are there any iconic people in history who didn't have their own personal issues?
Also, I actually like Cinder... I just wish we got more backstory for her, and an understanding of her motives, so she could be a slightly more empathetic villain... or at least understand her.

It seems like all these problems stem from the same source, not knowing what you're doing and then when called out on it, not taking the criticism and improving/letting people who actually know what they're doing work

I think the criticism RWBY is getting right now is a opportunity to fix things. I see just dozens of youtubers and fans pointing out their errors and the plot holes and i think if they just value those critiques and try to get something out of them, the show can actually come back to it's prime glory.
I say this because at first i found those criticism videos annoying and that they just served as a way to send hate to the show, while in reality it shows how much the fans love this show and care about it. Loved the video and already subscribed to the channel, hope to see more !

5:46 I was never perturbed about Blake acting more outgoing than usual in the beginning of the first volume. The audience still doesn't know her whole story, and the cast knows even less. So while I was in the moment with watching that episode, there wasn't a problem. Retroactively examining it, I don't see why Blake would be acting like she has a ton of baggage because she's trying to hide keep that hidden from all the new people she's written. Those scenes like her cheering with Ruby and Yang or waving that RWBY flag just seem so inconsequential due to their small portion of screen time, and the Rule of Funny. So I don't understand why Vaccaro returns to them.

    • @ryancarson6962

Jacob Bielski Unicorn of war returned to that because like it or not those are canon scenes of her character and those scenes make her character feel disjointed and inconsistent. Which was Unicorn of war’s overall point about the problem with Blake. Heck even before that scene she seemed more of a quiet less outgoing person so that still doesn’t work well with her character even then. When you’re reviewing a character you need to acknowledge everything about them even things like this because actions do define characters, even actions that seem small can define a character and who they are.

I agree completely! I mean in all honesty, I saw the first 3 volumes as us from Ruby's eyes, as the world was whole hearted and fun. But as volume 2 and 3 can along things got darker and darker, as the story began to unfold. But I didn't care about story because they show was entertaining. Whether because it was hilarious or awesome to watch, i didn't care how bad the animation got. But after volume 3, i haven't been able to connect as well with the show. I don't find it fun anymore. Its more boring if anything but i just try to keep with it. I honestly don't know what more could be done with the show besides added more magical elements to screw with the plot, but I really miss the goofy moments team RWBY had. Now its just seems that they are shipping the team with each other to satisfy the fans instead of giving us more entertainment.

On the note of mystery fetishes, I have gotten so much more engaged with the characters and plot since I can now theorize and feel tension with the relics, the maidens, if Salem is planing on bringing the relics together to try to kill the gods again or something similar. Im so glad this has improved!!!

Well done my war horse, when r u gonna break down episode 1 of the sixth? Also miles and a bit of the
new staff talked our ears off for 10 mins in the theater before the actual show on how they did and will
improve so we'll see, BUT DAMN it was a strong showing thus far and the fight song made up 4 the lack
    of the intro for me!!!!

  • @whiskeyii

I agree on all points except for the storyboards argument. What seems to be happening to me is that not all of the animators excel at fight scenes, and there were only so many Kim Newman's to go around. However, normally storyboards would be there specifically to make up for a large gap in ability by (literally) illustrating the flow of a given fight--see basically any Avatar storyboards.
And storyboards aren't as set-in-stone as a lot of viewers seem to think; the strictness of how closely a storyboard is adhered to varies wildly by company, so even in a given sequence, animators are often given freedom to add in little touches here and there; the "It's Over, Isn't it?" storyboards are an excellent example of this, as you can see how the finished product added in little dramatic flourishes here and there for the big climax of the song. By contrast, interviews with the creators of the Miraculous Ladybug have instances where the producers specifically say that the animators are not allowed to deviate from the storyboards, and even then the quality of scenes from Season 1 vs Season 2 vary wildly in quality because different animation studios worked on each season.
I think what happened in past volumes (and this seems to have finally been addressed in Vol 6) is that the content seems to have been largely dictated by the writers rather than by someone with an art background. Now that a (the?) lead animator seems to have some say in the storyboarding process, we should hopefully see better constructed fight scenes.

Regarding the video game it suffers due to no attention, grantwd it was their first game but a game like that is very bare to what fans would want. I just feel the combat is pretty empty, the story isnt really a thing but just comedic, amd the game kinda doesnt give you the feeling of the character. I would like to see it grow as much as the show and other games but that is coming from me being a major gamer.

I agree with the rush production especially the fact when they have other on going shows on top of that every year as well. This is too much for Rooster Teeth to handle, with Gen:Lock not that far away. I'm worried its writing and production of that as well.

I honestly think another thing they could do which would help the production tremendously is air the episodes when they are fully ready and glossed over sure it'll take longer and though some fans wouldn't be keen it'd help give animators more time instead of feeling rushed with a deadline or at least change the deadline so they have more time to work with what has been made all and all love the video and you definitely made really good points maybe you should be hired and help CRWBY and ALL HAIL THE ICE QUEEN
