Before plunging into the epic 20 minutes pieces, i'd say check out a couple more shorter pieces like And You And I, South Side of The Sky, or Starship Trooper, and if you're still loving it, then get ready for a few trips...

A beautiful ‘classically’ influenced song that marks the return of Rick Wakeman back into YES. The compliments of spanish guitar (Howe) and synthesizers (Wakeman) along with Jon’s vocals (& writing) make this a wonderous song. I always feel light and happy after listening to this song! And wait till you hear ‘Awaken’! Looking forward to your reactions!

They released this as a single back in '77 and it didn't chart very high. But all that pop crap that charted higher will never be remembered like this, and great music lives through generations as your reaction proves. By the way - listen to 'Turn Of The Century' from the same album. It wasn't released as a single, but it's an absolute masterpiece!

4:50 Yeah, YES has that effect on a lot of people. Rick Wakeman, their keyboard player, said this about their singer, Jon Anderson: "Jon is the only person I know, who's trying to save this planet, while living on another one" Can't wait until you get into their music with Jon's "esoteric lyrics".

This is one of their best "pretty songs", but if you enjoyed this one, you should check out 'Yesterday and Today', from their first album. They are probably my 2 favorite pretty songs by YES : )

I agree with some of the other comments, take your time getting to the epic pieces, "No opportunity necessary, no experience needed" from the 2nd album Time & a word shows how adventurous they were becoming, "Heart of the Sunrise" from Fragile, "Starship Trooper" from The Yes album, "And you & I" from Close to the Edge, "To be over" from Relayer & "Turn of the Century" from Going for the One, all magnificent shorter to medium length songs. Listening to them before diving into their "Holy Trinity" their 3 masterworks: "Close to the Edge", "The gates of delirium" & "Awaken" will make the experience so much more special. Best wishes

One of the things that makes YES brilliant is to delve into the lyrics. Some of the lyrics are so intense that they bring a tear to the eye. Seeing them live in 1979 was one of the best shows I ever saw with Rick Wakeman on the keyboards........I can't describe the experience.

Basically every thing of YES you listern betwen ... '68 and '78 is just great ... then many cool things even after '80 ... but maybe here and there, not full albums. They left to us a precious baggage of art.
Now my suggestions for more reactions. I am excluding the maximum operas of the the 15+ minutes tracks , like "CLose To The Edge", "The Revealing Science Of God", etc..
If you like something really soft "Yesterday and Today" from the first album (1968)
If you like something hippy and proto-progressive you can try "Survaival" from the first album (1968)
Something hippy "Dear Father" (between the first and the second album) (1969)
Something underground and jazzy ? A very "dense track"? The one I consider the "manifest" of prog-rock? "Yours Is No Disgrace" from the third album (1970)
A great YES cover with amazing melody and instrumental sections (guitar) ? "America" bonus-track (1971) ...good even the one from 1996 live show in S.Louis Obisbo
Prog-rock ? "Heart Of The Sunrise" from the fourth abum (1971)
Another "celestial track"? "And You And I" , fifth album (1972)
An incredibly pioneering sounding composition? "Sound Chaser" (1974)
An amazing steel-guitar and electric-guitar interlude? "To Be Over" (1974)
Another "celestial pinnacle" ? "A Turn Of The Century" from Going For The One Album (1977)
A punk-rock (very refined) track'? "Release, release" (1978)
One unique sounding track re-creating an third type meeting with aliens? "Arriving UFO" (1978)
Just for giving you a very short list :)

YES suggestions. Fragile - Heart of the Sunrise, South Side of the Sky. The Yes Album- I’ve Seen All Good People, Perpetual Change, Yours Is No Disgrace, Starship Trooper. Close to the Edge - Close to the Edge, And You and I. Going For The One- Awaken. Tormato - Future Time/Rejoice, Don’t Kill the Whale, Release Release, On the Silent Wings of Freedom. That should get you started?😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

  • @markjohnson4217

Your comment about their sound is bang on...and you haven't even heard AWAKEN yet!! They actually achieved the sound of ascending higher and higher, up
Into the stratosphere, voices and harps, cathedral pipe organ with earth shattering power...coming from a 5 piece rock band?!?! Also VERY important that you get to 'Close to The Edge'...this is their crown jewel epic, there has never been anything like it before or since in the history of rock. It is a stunning achievement.

Steve Howe gave a solo performance. He knows he is great, he demands silence from his audience. If he doesn't get it, he will stop playing, stand up, and shush you with a scowl on his face! You ought to know better.

Glad to hear you went with "Wonderous Stories". This is my favorite Yes song. As far as the Yesathon, the first two albums have dated recording equipment. Modern playback shows those problems. My advice would be to start with "The Yes Album". It's their third album and the first with any of their greatest hits.

Zay, you keep picking some of the greatest music from the 70's. So glad you can turn on a new generation to there classic songs. I graduated HS in 1975, and Jon Anderson's vocals are amazing. Thanks for bringing it back. Let's add some early Genesis like "Trick of the Tail" and Dance on a Volcano. You're going to love it!
