Yep, “The Dan” is sick! Try Black Cow for some of the finest horn arrangements since Earth Wind and Fire. Finally, give the song “Peg” a listen. The guitar solo is remarkable. Shout out to Zel!
@@whlewis9164 Their album production is pure Donald Fagen. That same insane work flowed right through to his solo albums. He was definitely the one behind the writing and production creativity.
Now those two songs were both from the same album. There's so much more to go in their catalog. Must hears: FM (No Static), Black Cow, Hey 19, Babylon Sisters, Gaucho, My Rival, Kid Charlemagne, Rikki Don't Lose That Number, Dr. Wu, Deacon Blues, Monkey in Your Soul, I can go on and on. You'll freak over FM, it's so incredible. Glad you're aboard the Dan Train, it's a great ride.
And then...Steely Dan's vocalist/piano player, Donald Fagan also has killer solo albums - The Night Fly, and Kamakiriad. Very much worth a listen, man.
I’m 46 and only got really into Steely Dan about 10 years ago and I’ve listened to all their songs/albums and live shows and I have to say I think they are amazing! Incredible artist’s that have made perfect music. Every song is literally perfect! By the way your doing a fantastic job with all the different bands 👌👏👏👏
I am amazed at the joy I can get from watching these things. Glad you found 'em. I have about 75 Steely Dan songs saved. I listened to about 14 of em Sunday and broke a sweat behind it.
Steely Dan is no joke. When I was working with my uncles roofing company we had a I pod with the full Steely Dan library on it that we listened to 3 years straight. 😂

But being a musician my whole life, it didn't take me all that long to figure out oh my God these guys they've just got that touch. They've just got it.

Hey guys - I was about your age when Aja was released. I am now 71 years old. This music still hits me just the way it gets at you. There is not a bad or mediocre song on that album. Every cut is a gem all on its own. Black Cow, Deacon Blues, Josie, Aja, Home at Last...even after 50 years or so I have never tired of hearing them. I am glad for you that you discovered some of the best of the best music created and produced over the last 50 + years. A very impressive and interesting fact about Steely Dan. The "band" is really just 2 guys. Donald Fagan (piano and vocals) and Walter Becker (guitar and vocals) (he died about 5 years ago). The rest of the players on those songs are studio session musicians.
Do not let the Lyrics fool you. They are not innocent words. The stories in most of the songs are often underworld, dark side of human nature, often drugs, and desperation are written in, but hidden well within the lyrics.
Now you know that Jazz/Rock sound that I grew to appreciate...but not at first in the 70s when they were making great tunes. Good to see millennials/ Gen Zs or whomever discover good pop music that boomers grew up on!
Just Do All Of The Royal Scam Album, You will hear every song eventually, might as well get the entire effect of the album as intended, and as we would have listened to it in the 70's
Just keep listening and watch your subscribers and comment count sky rocket. There is no better group of musicians ever to play on one groups albums like the Dan.
I can still see why as a younger person I found them sterile and perfected so tightly that all the warmth and spirit was taken out of it, but man now I’m old enough to appreciate the benefits of perfectionism, so to catch their vibe so young is a credit to you imo. It’s not party in the USA lol.
Steely Dan is in my top ten favorite band list (don't have a #1). Love all their albums/music. Even the Donald Fagen solo stuff. You'll enjoy their earlier stuff and hearing how their sound progresses with each album. Great choice and reaction!!
Many people refer to Steely Dan as a "band" and that is not really true. It is more of a musical project under the guidance of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. They would write a bunch of songs then go into the studio and bring in the absolute top talent of the day to play on it. The list of drummers who have appeared on SD albums is absolute drumming royalty - Jeff Porcaro, Jim Keltner, Steve Gadd, and Keith Carlock. Same goes for all the other instrumentation - all top players. SD did not just stop there, they would bring in like 5 top guitarists and have them all give a song a try and Walter and Don would pick the best one. Highly distilled talent on these records.
I had endeavored to listen to the full catalog of Steely Dan's work from start to finish, about a year ago. I stopped after Pretzel Logic, their third album, because I was convinced that the Master Playlist I was putting together for all my favorite songs, of all time, was going to include every track of theirs, and I thought that was unfair to all the other bands I have in the playlist. I've yet to find a band that tells such real, raw stories in such beautiful music (I am admittedly shortsighted in my musical knowledge; there's simply too much music for one man such as myself to know everything). Looking forward towhen you do "Do It Again" from these guys, and if I can also suggest a new band to the channel, I'd be interested to see/hear your opinions of the song "Hey Tonight" by Creedence Clearwater Revival. Hope you're doing well, Zay! Keep on Rockin'!
