Tip of the iceberg! "Kid Charlemagne", "Time Out of Mind", "FM", "Home at Last", "Glamour Profession", "King of the World", "Everything Must Go", "Green Earrings", "Sign in Stranger", "Black Cow", "Do It Again", "Cousin Dupree", "Two Against Nature", "Bad Sneakers", "Bodhissatva" to name but a few. Musicianship and production second to none....

Zay, we LOVE your energy listening to Steely Dan! I honestly can say along with millions of other fans that they cannot write a bad song. Honestly, I tried to be critical but it's impossible. Even the songs that are by comparison "subpar", I end up really liking! To me and many, their albums produced almost annually between 1972 and 1980 are the best string of Rock/Jazz/Funk music ever produced. It never tires 5 decades later. Welcome to the Dandom.

everything about Steely Dan say's, don't stop recording until it's perfect. Elements of old jazz, new jazz, motown, rock, reggae, blues it's all there. and you know exactly who it is when you hear it. I don't think todays listeners are conditioned to appreciate it like myself through the years, and you now. listen deeply like Pink Floyd or just groove to it and both ways you're feeling the same thing... dig it.

This is music. We grew up when bands played their own instruments, wrote their own music, and could sing. Real musicians. Can't beat the 70s music. I think we were blessed to have that time in music history.

You've just dipped into the tip of Dan. I can't wait to see your reaction to FM (No Static) and Black Cow! Steely Dan were two guys, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. Becker passed in 2017 but Fagen is still going and actually touring right now. Fagen has put out some incredible Steely Dan-like solo albums, so between the original Dan albums, and Fagen's solo efforts, there's plenty to enjoy. What you'll begin to notice is how many other artists have sampled The Dan on their own records. They are a true musician's band.

Zay, got a story for you. I don't know if you remember, but I was born in Buffalo, NY ( like you :) ). I know you said you were going to school in Syracuse. Well, when I was 20 ( in 1990 ) I was attending a school in Utica, NY, a bit past Syracuse on interstate 90. We used to come back to Buffalo every weekend, and go back to Utica early Monday morning. Like I said, I was 20, and my room mate was 19. I bought a Steely Dan greatest hits cassette tape and dude, we played that thing constantly on that 3 hour ride down the 90. We knew every word to every song. That's how I fell in love with Steely Dan. From there I expanded out, because there are so many great songs not on the greatest hits album. Top shelf band, top shelf cast of rotating musicians, top shelf lyrics, all carefully and masterfully engineered. They are in a league of their own.

Hey Zay, great to see you loving Steely Dan, these guys grew up with an intense adoration of r&b, jazz & soul music so they mixed that all with rock & pop & came up with their unique sound formula. They, Donald Fagan & Walter Becker were English majors at College which also gives you an appreciation for how they came up with such extraordinarily descriptive lyrics. As their career progressed & their compositions became more refined they were constantly drafting in different musicians depending on the specific requirements of each song, they were such perfectionists with incredible ear for detail which you can clearly hear in each song. Their discography is a goldmine which you have just discovered so enjoy digging for more gold. May I suggest a few personal favourites: "Aja", "Gaucho", "Black Cow", "Home at last", "Green Earings" & "Don't take me alive", have fun Buddy!

Hey Zay! Since I've mentioned the Steely Dan faves (so far as I'm concerned, at least), I'll change tack and mention a different band for you. When you get time, you should check out the Weather Report (yes, that's the band name). Try the track "Birdland", the first track off their 1977 release "Heavy Weather." It features one of the best bassists of all time, Jaco Pastorius, and, according to Pastorius, "Birdland" was so good, the take heard on the album was their first take.

Seen them live 19 times since 1994 and it just keeps getting better. 13 players on stage, and possibly the tightest horn section in the business. Last concert was 3rd row right center 7/3/22 at Bethel Woods NY, famous for the 1969 Woodstock concert. Next up Black Cow and Glamour Profession.

They are a big band. Two dudes who shared a vision of what music could be. They didn't care what genre', they used what was available, and hired guys that could do it. They had the writing and arranging skills down pat. They were relentless in the studio to capture what they had in their head, so it could be presented to people. Uncompromising, artistic, musicians. They could rock, they could jazz, they could funk, they could soul, they could shuffle, they could blues. It didn't matter, they could pull it off.

You are so right. Steely Dan, with music written by Donald Fagen (who is also the lead singer that you love so much), lyrics by the sadly departed Walter Becker, with Producer Gary Katz and some of the finest session musicians in the business, were master song craftsmen.
Others have suggested the song "Kid Charlemagne" and I very much agree. It's a song about a drug dealer who sold a drug that nobody wants anymore. It also contains one of the greatest guitar solos that you'll ever hear.
I heartily endorse your deep dive into The Dan, and I hope you'll continue it. But continue to keep filed away in the back of your mind that the wondrous music of King Crimson awaits you.

Donald Fagen was always a bit insecure about his singing voice, so on the Dan's first album they had another vocalist sharing singing duties with him, but eventually Don and songwriting partner Walter Becker decided that Fagen needed to be the Dan's only vocalist because he could give their songs the style of blues/R&B/jazz - inflected vocals they wanted. He does not have a traditional pop/rock singing voice, but that actually kind of made him stand out in my mind when they started hitting the airwaves in the 1970s - and his phrasing and timing are absolutely impeccable.

Try some Donald Fagen solo like IGY. I'm sure you'll like as well or even NY Rock and Soul Revue

Love all SD. But, Royal Scam, Katy Lied, Aja, albums. As a teenage drummer back then, all the legend studio cats show us how it's done.

No doubt my lifelong favorite band Steely Dan. Two guitar charged songs off album Royal Scam: Kid Charlemgne - th-cam.com/video/jJ9Xk-VoGqo/w-d-xo.html and Don't Take Me Alive - th-cam.com/video/9MUOi2ehuvs/w-d-xo.html
