This is the classiest iconoclast song ever. He’s putting up a front, saying how he plays the sax just how he feels and gets drunk dying a perfect struggling musician’s death. I want a name when I lose, trying to put glory around my grand failure. But he admits at the end he cried when he wrote the song, showing off his inner loneliness, but still defiant-sue me if I play too long! As someone who gets feeling socially apart, it’s that conundrum of making yourself happy by being who you are, but seeing how that doesn’t always win you friends or the banal enjoyment you see others have. Sorry to get deep but steely Dan songs are rarely just goofs. He’s got a point when he writes.
That’s what was so great about growing up in the ‘70’s and early ‘80’s! Everything from bands like AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Queen, Rush, Yes, Pink Floyd, etc. to Steely Dan, The Steve Miller Band, Hall and Oates, Fleetwood Mac, Earth Wind and Fire, The Jackson Five…I could go on and on! We listened to and loved it all! Even most radio stations back then played a wide variety of musical genres. We were so lucky to have grown up in such a musically diverse time with such wonderful artists!
Bud, back in the 70's when they were making records, their sound quality was so much more superior than most band at that time. So clean and sharp. They are good live but their studio work is way better.
It's always so good to see someone discovering Steely Dan, such a great band and so many songs to uncover. FM, Black Cow and My Old School are must hears. Another band you might like who are Dan-like in terms of arrangements and engineering is Tears For Fears. Woman in Chains is breathtaking. So glad I discovered your channel and great to be along for the ride!
You were experiencing an eargasm. You now know how we felt in the 70s the first time listening to them as well as other great musicians. They were masterful in the way they could create such memorable songs.
I realize it's been a couple of years since you did this. But as a 58 year old lifetime Steely Dan fan, it's a true joy to see the younger generations getting into them. As you say, " I love these guys"!! I understand completely.
Hey Zay! Jurist jumped on board. Love the reactions man and your enthusiasm for music. I’m 62 years old and have seen Steely about 15 times in concert - to see that musicianship live is crazy. In my opinion, Black Cow and FM are “must listens”, you’ll go crazy with the smooth funk. You may recognize the beginning of Black Cow because it was sampled on a popular Rap song. FM is just “stank face” funk. Then there’s the 2 rock songs with crazy guitar solos, My Old School and Reeling in the Years, and finally the song Aja - iconic! It’s a smooth, jazzy song that just takes you on an adventure and the 2 drum solos towards the end are just crazy. There’s just too much not to play, enjoy the trip further down the Steely Dan road - I’ll be in the backseat, can’t wait!
@@cameron_fairchild Yeah it’s not a top tier Steely song but it’s still not a bad song, it has its moments and the lyrics are pretty intense if you ever look them up or google interpretations of the song.
Taste-y, bro!!! So smooth! Just wait until you hear some of their earlier, more Rock-oriented stuff! That is, they always have a mix of Rock, Jazz, Latin, Pop, Blues, etc., but some of their earlier song flat out rock! You will love it!
The greatest lyrics. The greatest chord changes. The greatest bass lines. The greatest guitar parts. The perfect backing vocals. The greatest production. Hard not to love. The greatest.
ZAY, can't tell you how happy l am that you've decided to ride the Steely Dan train, they have sooo many great songs, this is going to be so much fun 🤩🤟
Do It Again, Dirty Work, Reelin' In the Years, Bodhisattva, My Old School, Rikki Don't Lose That Number, Black Friday, Kid Charlemagne, Green Earrings, Haitian Divorce, Black Cow, Aja, FM, Hey Nineteen, and even more.
So many great songs to choose from. There's "Dirty Work" sung by David Palmer, "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "Hey Nineteen", "My Old School", "Show Biz Kids" (my personal favorite), "Bodhisattva", and "Here In The Western World" to name just a few more. You really can't go wrong with any Steely Dan song. They're kind of like Led Zeppelin in that respect.
Yeah!!! Music for grown folks. At this time this is my favorite Steely Dan. FM and Dirty Work you have to review. FM is about radio changing from AM to FM which was long playing rock song stations and public radio. There is a movie called FM. The show WKRP is based on movie. Dirty Work was first band single. Record company wanted them more marketable so the vocalist was temporary member of band. ENJOY!
When I'm in the right mood, there is no finer song. Probably my favorite chord progression ever, by any band. Check out Doctor Wu, another incredible song.
For me the Three "Dees" are an incredible trio: Deacon blues, Do It again, Doctor Wu. Then I'd add another masterpiece, King of the world. I would listen all my life to this four songs and never get tired...
Steely Dan is everlasting music for everyone! Jazz, funk, rock, reggae in a blender...a genre of its own.. Chill music, party music, drive on and on music...it never gets old. I grew up with these guys tunes (not to disclose my age), they were, are and will remain the masters of what they did. So glad to see the younger Gen enjoy their art and vibe! Well done!
Greetings Zay,from down under (Australia) first time I tuned in your reaction u tube, once heard plays in your head for a long time after, and I see your joy, letting steely take you wherever, regards Malcolm Mangawhero,Lorna.
I agree with Hermit that you may as well stay with this album and go with Aja(Ay-ja)next as you will eventually get to all the Steely Dan staples. Great reaction Zay as usual, we were all there at some point in our lives when we were first introduced to the Dan.
These guys are amazing. They started in the late 60,s, and stopped in the 2000s. Donald Fagan is the main vocalist and keyboardist, Walter Brecker was the guitarist. Walter died recently. Check out some of Donald Fagan's solo stuff, it's super dope. Snowbound, The Dunes, IGY, New Frontier, Night Fly, Mona, Morph The Cat. All super lit!✌️
I grew up listening to these legends, the album Aja is a musical 🎶 masterpiece so many great tunes to list, Peg, Deacon Blues and green earrings are amongst my favourite, enjoy the ride 🧡xxx
One of my earliest, and I mean earliest, memories is of this album. I was probably four or five years old and my mom and her boyfriend and all of their friends would sit around passing a joint around and listen to this album over and over. My sister was right there by my side and we have been lifelong fans ever since. I appreciate your reaction to them.
Me too. I was at a restaurant in Gatlinburg, TN last week on vacation. A young lady was playing songs on the piano and singing in the restaurant. She played a bunch of McCartney songs while we ate. Right before we got the check, I went over to her tip jar between songs. I complimented her playing and asked if she knew any Dan. She smiled so big and said, "yeah, 9 songs". I said we're about to leave, she said what's your favorite, I said "Deacon Blues". She played it and I sang along and made the family wait until were done. It was awesome.
It was Nice to hear this again. And Enjoy it Along with someone who is Falling Hard for All this Classic music. This again was The Background music 🎶 of My Early Adolescence! Very Nice! Until the next time, Peace, & Love ✌️
Some great SD tracks “Do It Again” “Don’t Take Me Alive” “Pretzel Logic” “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number” “Black Cow” - big hip hop track from mid 90’s sampled beautifully “FM” So many more gems. Just goes on and on.
Yes! Please let me add..... "Green Earrings" "Kid Charlemagne" "Your Gold Teeth" I and II "King of the World" "Dirty Work" "Showbiz Kids" OMG I could go on as well.
Glad to see another person discovering the Dan! They're a most rewarding deep dive - start from first song on Can't Buy a Thrill (Do It Again) and work your way through all the albums. Enjoy!
I became a Steely Dan fan after first hearing Can't Buy a Thrill. When this album came out in 1977, I laid on the floor of my living room listening to it on my headphone, over and over and... It's hard to have a favorite song, but I'll admit I've listened to Deacon Blues more than any other song.
One of the best things about Steely Dan is because who they used on their songs. That sax player was Pete Christlieb who was in the Tonight Show band at the time.
I'm really enjoying your Steely Dan reactions and discovery journey. Music can enrich life and SD music can soothe, uplift, funkify, make you groove, tell a story, take you to a place, and on and on. Keep up the great SD reactions! An early song that hinted at their style to come is "Night by Night" from their Pretzel Logic album.
Can you believe, I was listening to Aja on the radio one evening, and the disc jockey said he was playing the album because so many people were asking for it. He said he didn't like it and couldn't understand why it was so popular.
Now that you've been exposed to this amazing version of Steely Dan music, you need to go their first album and check out that sound. Different, but just as amazing. This is a band that I don't have a favorite era of. They're all great.
Yeah....Yeah.....I fell in love with Steely Dan when I heard "Peg" on the radio back in 1977......and the radio stations played it a lot!!!!....and this song Deacon Blues is a masterpiece too. This song is from their award winning album, "Aja(A....Gah)" Perfect union of Jazz....R & B...and Rock.....Beautiful style!!! Glad you are in love with Steely Dan. Now react to "FM(No Static At All)"
From this same album, Aja, which by the way is pronounced like the continent, Asia, take a listen to Home At Last, I Got The News, and you HAVE to check out the title track, Aja.

9 albums + Nightfly, Kamakiriad, Sunken Condos, Circus Money solo albums.

More Steely Dan. Can't go wrong there!! 2 good ones....Kid Charlemagne, and Reeling in the Years. Both have iconic guitar leads.
Jimmy Page (since he's relevant to this channel) said that Reeling in the Years was his favorite guitar solo ever.
@@craigcondon2035 Damn if that's not noteworthy I don't know what is.
@@craigcondon2035 I was gonna point that out. But I couldn't remember if that solo was "Skunk" Baxter....or Elliot Easton.
