My apologies for the audio quality in this one. I was talking too quietly, trying not to peak the levels of my mic. My newer videos are much better, at least I hope so.
I just got this airbrush from Hobby Lobby on 7/25/2023 for $149. It beat any online price I found by $20-$40 and no shipping Love your videos. No mindless chatter, just continuous solid info. And no obnoxious music or special effects. Good stuff. Thx
I took the long way around to the best airbrush ive ever used. Ive tried Amazon specials, Badger, H&S Ultra, Eclipse HP-BS and finally got the HP-CS. I now do not use any of the others. The HP-CS is pure joy to use, lays down paint smooth as silk and is SUPER easy to mix in the cup and clean. I did get mine at Hobby Lobby also for $149 with the cleaner, lube, water trap and paints. Best deal going. Grab one and you WILL NOT be disappointed. I dont usually gush over a product, but this one is gush worthy!
I just got an eclipse about a month ago and love it for miniatures and train scenery. I mostly use it for basing colors and blocking. It’s really changed my painting of miniatures.
Thanks to videos like this I'm convinced that the Iwata Eclipse HP-CS will be my first airbrush. Why start with a "starter" one or a cheaper model only to find out later that if you just went a step further to begin with, you could have saved yourself a lot of hassel? I'm a retired guy who's getting back into building plastic model airplanes and cars. It's my first airbrush ever, and I'm convinced I'll be getting the right one. 😉
Just ordered my Iwata Eclipse Hp Cs, so excited . I made the mistake of thinking I didnt deserve an airbrush like the Iwata Eclipse, Hp Cs and so I bough a cheap Amazon Iwata Knock off. I was able to get the cheap amazon air brush to work by thinning the Acrylic paints, and adding Air-brush flow improver only to have the nozzle eventually still clog up, what a hassle. Yes a cheap Amazon Iwata knockoff will work but not consistently working. I found keeping the cheaper air brush working was more time wasted/spent troubleshooting than painting.. I know the Iwata Eclipse will take my Model painting to the next level. I am so thankful I found your Channel great reviews, and you pay for what you get. I enjoy your vidoes, your voice is fine LOL don't change your videos for a few clowns complaining.
don't shortchange yourself- of course you deserve a good airbrush! I started with a cheap iwata knock off back in the day as well. Great place to get started, get the basics down, then move up to the higher end ones like the eclipse. It's my favorite airbrush ever- i'll bet you'll love it. Thanks for the kind words and best of luck to you.
At 1:37 that nozzle is actually fused to the threading part of the airbrush and isn't compression fit on my new Iwata Eclipse HP-CS. I'm a little confused on why and how to take it apart since every disassembly video including the one by Iwata themselves show it as a compression fit. I've triple checked to make sure I have the same airbrush and, yea, it's an Iwata Eclipse HP-CS.
Amazing how different and better quality your 10 year old eclipse is to the current model that you can buy now. Very different nozzle design and much higher build quality on your old eclipse.
Great video. My Eclipse is maybe 15 years old? it has considerably more chrome missing from the paint cup than yours..... But it still sprays like it did on day 1. Still has the same needle and nozzle. Air leaks a little around the head cap but nothing a little beeswax cant cure. Or maybe I will treat it to a new O ring :) This airbrush is my pride and joy.
Thank you! I have a new video on this one coming out this friday. just about finished it- much more detail and way better audio. It's my favorite airbrush too! prob the best one ever made. I changed the o ring in mine and it sealed it right back up! its worth it for sure
Guys I have 0 experience airbrushing. Am looking for a hobby! Glad I will choose the correct airbrush now I just need to be directed to a good airbrushing tutorial for beginners 😅
Thanks for the detailed review…just ordered mine (my first airbrush) and I’m really looking forward to putting it into service painting models I’ve printed with my 3D resin printer.
I got an Eclipse after watching a gamut of reviews as I was looking for a good all-purpose step up from the cheap Master Airbrush I had been using for practice. Overall I'm very pleased with it, I've used it to completely paint my DeAgostini Millennium Falcon, and the Eclipse helped me achieve an impressive finished result I definitely couldn't have obtained otherwise. My only problem I encountered with it was a clogged nozzle that took quite some time to clean out, but I think that falls down to user error/inexperience, not thinning my paints enough, and not cleaning it thoroughly enough after each session.
hahah a subtle math flex is sometimes needed. 🤣 Congrats on the airbrush. You are going to love it the more you use it. My eclipse has treated me well over the years- it'll always be my favorite
The Eclipse is my go to brush to recommend to people once they have become familiar with the airbrushing basics. I usually recommend a harder and steenbeck Ultra for newbies and if they enjoy it, I suggest they upgrade to an eclipse eventually. It's just such a nice intermediate airbrush that does everything you need in my hobby (Miniature painting).
You say this nozzle is compression fit, however I just bought mine and my nozzle does not detach like you show in the video. Am I doing something wrong?
There is an Eclipse Takumi version of this, 0.35 nozzle and shares a couple of features with the Custom Micron Takumi. What dou you think, a reasonable beginners airbrush?
the iwata eclipse is probably the best airbrush out there. Perfect for a beginner or a professional. haven't tried the takumi version yet, but it looks amazing to me.
I have the Iwata High Performance HP-B Plus which has a .2mm nozzle. Seeing that the Custom Micron is only .02mm smaller, how much difference is there between the two? Sorry for the bad pun. For a future show, could you make one for airbrushing mountains? I'm not talking about simple gradients like on a t-shirt, but realistic mountains with a lot of details. This isn't very difficult with a brush and oil/acrylics, but I'm finding it very challenging with an airbrush. And as another person said, this is the best airbrush site on TH-cam. I love the way you explain things and your voice is perfect, not too low.
Thank you for the kind words. The Iwata High Performance HP-B is just as good as a micron. I can paint exactly the same with both, so you are good to go! I will eventually get to more landscape paintings, but not any time soon. Study reference photos of mountains, and use shields or ripped pieces of paper to paint in sharp lines. Take your time and keep practicing! Best of luck.
Superb look at this airbrush. I just used it for the first time around 5 days ago to paint Gundam models, and I am making mistakes, but learning a lot! But I picked up a couple of tips from this video and I'm well on my way!
I have some, what looks to be corrosion(?) in the paint cup of my Iwata HP-CS I bought from a major retailer. It looks like the chrome has rubbed come off, and maybe brass underneath? Should I be worried about this? What might I have done that could cause this? I do use some solvent-based paints, AK Real Color or Tamiya XF using Mr Color Leveling Thinner, but I've not heard of those being reactive with chrome. Occasionally I'll run some Deluxe Brush Cleaner through to destroy any acrylics that might be lingering. I spray through Iwata Madea airbrush cleaner, and sometimes let the paintcup soak with it over night, or for an hour during paint sessions, to loosen up any of my water based acrylics. Or should I just not worry about this at all? I love the brush, I swap out the needle and nozzle to .5's so that I can get primers and varnishes on easy peasy, and find I can still do almost everything I was doing with my smaller needle. I use a ps-771 for any real detail work I have to do. Thank you!
unfortunately, this has happened to every airbrush I own, especially after a year or so of heavy use. The chrome tends to wear off exposing the brass inside the paint cup. Doesn't have any effect on the airbrush except for aesthetics. I wouldn't worry about it!
@@theartworkshop I've got two Olympos-200 C airbrushes, these are called "Irregular grade B" and are sold as spare parts guns for the MP200-C Microns by Olympos. The only thing wrong with these two is the less than stellar chrome finish on the inside of the color cup--nothing else....yet they're both fully functioning airbrushes just like the actual Microns they're meant to be parts donors for. Both cost me about $65 each with free express shipping from Japan...my last one arrived in less than three weeks. I'm contemplating getting one of the "irregular grade B" 200 B guns (.18 mm) for $80 next paycheck, plus some spare needles--a 3-pack of .23 Micron C needles is about $56 right now because of the weak JP yen compared to the US$...only a year ago they were almost $30 apiece with no 3-packs available!
Very useful review. Thank you for that. I was wondering how far was Eclipse from Custom Micron. As I see the distance is not as big as many people think. That's the most important conclusion from your review.
Thanks! For the line tests, both were held as close to the paper as possible. The needle was basically touching the paper. You can spray the same size line with both. More control for shading with the micron though.
I’ve had one of these and some great info , can I ask do you always paint with the front shroud off should I go this , I presume it help s for really close detail work. Regards Fred
Please forgive my ignorance as I am learning about airbrushing. I am getting back into airplane and tank modeling and I want to get one very good airbrush. From this video would it be a safe assumption that this would be a perfect purchase for my purpose in modeling? Thank you for any honest advice. I simply don't want to be buying multiple airbrushes.
Just my opinion but if you want one very good airbrush, the iwata eclipse hp-cs is it. Top of the line professional painting tool that will last decades. My eclipse is approaching 15 years old and still works as well as day 1.
How does this compare to a Badger 105 Patriot? I know the Badger has a .5mm needle and is cheaper. I want an airbrush for painting miniatures primarily, but feel as though the Iwata Eclipse has better build quality and is potentially more versatile.
I have the Eclipse HP-CS, i do custom graphics on benchrifle stocks i paint with my airbrushes for the graphics. It works ok but i must say my Paasch Talon, Vision, and Raptor airbrushes i like a little better
I loved your review. I think that when you measured the trigger pull you measured 0.25 of an inch but the audio indicated 0.25 of a mm. I just reviewed the video a second time and I missed where you had zeroed the caliper. Sorry
Fantastic video, instant new subscription 👍 I have just bought a new Iwata Eclipse, when I try to paint without the air cap it doesn’t paint, have they changed the design or have I bought a faulty unit?
Thanks man! You aren't removing the nozzle cap are you? You need that on to spray paint. You can only remove the small needle cap (the first one on the front). If you're completely new to airbrushing, I recommend leaving everything on for a while until you get used to it. Best of luck!
Double action is of no purpose whatsoever other than making airbrushes more expensive, making fingers cramp and promote tip drying whilst being difficult to handle for beginners. I would NOT recoomend to buy such airbrushes at al. It's basically a cheat.
