Buddy Holly wrote all his own songs. Which was rare back then… so of course he would inspire the greatest to follow in his footsteps.

Buddy Holly was so ahead of his time, he was already using strings in his music and using different rythms and everything. Can you imagine what he would have done in the 60's when everything opened up creatively!?
+Bret Vines He really was the prototypical rock singer songwriter. Buddy Holly and the Crickets were probably the first modern rock band; guitars, bass and drums. And yes, he was also one of the first rock artists to begin producing his own material. He was sort of the prototype that Brian Wilson sprung from.
I imagine if Buddy had lived he probably would have went beyond rock. He wasn't nearly as dedicated to that musical form as many of his contemporaries. I have a feeling in the end he would have become an ace Nashville songwriter and producer. His interests were definitely tending towards production in the last bit before he died.
Did so much in such a short time.
I think the Beatles filled the void that was left when Buddy died. I'm not sure that they would have had the early impact that they did if Buddy had survived and continued his career......and I'm a massive Beatles fan.

Laughed very hard when I saw this for first time today over "John's" nativity scene.
That was utterly priceless. The story about John, the Buddy Holly riff and just that two of the all time greats sat there and remembered a fellow musician that died too young but who influenced McCartney's and Lennon's music.

Every interview with Paul has a level of enjoyment just about equal to his music. What a gift he is.
if you think about it, as a Beatle, John Lennon played all of those concerts, did all of those TV shows, press conferences, personal appearances, photo shoots, and movies, and never saw ANY of it!
in the early beatles he wore lass contacts, his ex wife wrote about it in her book,

Buddy Holly was a unique song writer producer before anyone else in the 1950s he didn’t give a shit about criticism because he was a extraordinary artist the Beatles loved his music just that they sounded different
Cynthia Lennon said that was one of the first connections she and John had... they were in their lettering class they took together at art college and people were testing each other’s eye sight with the blackboard for fun and neither her nor John wore their glasses cuz they were embarrassed by them and they both had the same awful vision so they laughed and shared stories of each other’s trials not wearing their glasses.
Poor John, he was so blind!!! Anyway the story made me laugh so hard!
+Marina Daniela There are a lot of stories about John's myopia. The infamous car accident he had in late 1968 happened after he finally got his driver's permit, and the one time he took Yoko, Julian and Yoko's daughter for a trip, he cracked the car up. So far as I understand it, he never really drove again.
Whenever I hear Paul tell one of these lovely anecdotes about the times growing up with George or John I'm sometimes reminded that there are actually a fair number of people out there that can't enjoy them since,in their mind,the real Paul died in the mid sixties and so these stories must be an elaborate ruse.Weird and sad.

I agree, I hate it when people start the comparisons of each of the Beatles. It's pointless, they were the best because the truly worked in unison. Even their weaknesses were something of a strength for them. One could not work without the other. Separately they are great too, but together...was magic. They will always be the best in the world.

I think Buddy's music would definitely have developed beyond Rock n Roll and R & B without a doubt. Had he lived I think we would have heard mainstream, perhaps even light classical, but don't let that fool us. If he'd have lived to hear Reggae and so on I don't doubt he'd have produced his own versions of that music as well. Buddy was interested in all kinds of music and was developing his style all the time. Incidentally. Although not always popular I love John and Paul's version of Words Of Love they recorded for Beatles For Sale. Regarding the Everly Brothers. They were yet another influence vocally but more so for the Hollies.
Fantastic show. I still regularly play the three LPs Buddy made before he died. Great stuff.

Elvis was created. Buddy created himself. Buddy played multiple instruments and was literally a music genius. And add to that the fact that he was a really nice guy. An incredible person. The more I learn about him the more I'm in awe of his talent and integrity. God rest his soul. I miss him and can only imagine, had he lived, the further greatness he would have achieved. I hope he's still singing in heaven.
Buddy also composed and wrote songs besides being able to play multiple instruments, he was most definitely a better overall musician than Elvis.

the nativity scene reminds me of an incident when i was a teen in school. i & a couple of friends, including the class clown, william were waiting 4 tommy, another friend to meetup w/us. this was way out in the country. i was blind as a bat w/out glasses which i refused to wear back then. so i noticed some movement way in the distance in a field. i said, "hey, maybe that's tommy". william says, "mikey, if u ever call tommy a horse again, i'll beat the shit out of u". we all laughed.

+steve conn - you're obviously uninformed on copyright law. Copyrights encompass intellectual property and to performance as well. This is how bands like Led Zeppelin can sue tribute bands that do their music. A DJ cannot play songs without paying performance rights fees.
Kevin Richards Rock the Stage NYC Paul is not DJing here; he and Ron are playing a live rendition (and Zeppelin suing another band for playing their music is irony beyond irony, of course). If playing someone else's song live were legally actionable every street musician would not exist.
steve conn Technically, musicians playing another artists music in a public medium (radio, TV or the internet) IS copyright infringement under the performance rights clause - 99.9% of bands just don't care if they do. Led Zeppelin was ONE exception who decided to enforce that copyright clause - they eventually dropped the suit.

Petty’s Echo Chamber
Another thing that contributed to the “Clovis Sound” wasn’t actually in the studio at all. “Norman built an echo chamber in the A-frame attic of his father’s garage next door,” says Stull. “Buddy Holly’s family was in the tile business and they took a bunch of scrap ceramic tile and put pieces all over the attic, which was about 100’ long and 50’ wide, to create reflective surfaces. On one side, Norman placed an old speaker in a wooden case that looked like the sort of speaker used in schools to make announcements, and on the other side he had a microphone. He also had some big pieces of sewer tile standing up in there, which the sound would hit and curve around to break up any standing waves. He would send the sound from his studio all the way over to that attic and then the microphone would pick it up and that sound would be sent back to the studio."
The echo chamber can be heard on all of the recordings Holly made at the Clovis studio, though it is particularly evident on “Peggy Sue” due to a clever production move by Petty.
The chord solo during “Peggy Sue” also presented a challenge - one that Petty couldn’t solve with creative engineering."
“Norman only used one microphone on the drums. On the intro to [Peggy Sue], you hear the drummer playing a paradiddle on a tom as Norman switches the echo on and off every two beats, from dry to wet,“ says Stull. Another nice touch was putting a mic close to the strings of Holly’s electric guitar to pick up the unamplified acoustic sound of the pick strumming the strings, which was blended with the slightly muffled sound of the amplified rhythm guitar.”
