      The band and Brian is really gone by the time , that track 'Pet Sounds ' was recorded. The you tube clips show other than Carl the rest of the band is out of it, drugged and gone by the time , God only Knows ' was performed on Ed Sullivan or whatever. Only Carl is on the record recorded track by that time..Carl first sang lead vocals on God only Knows and Good vibrations. From them it was Carl's band for the next 20 years. He is the only actual Beach Boy on the greatest tracks.

    Brian Wilson's mental breakdown was probably the single worst thing that has happened in the history of pop music. In my opinion, its effect on the progression of music was as dreadful as the death of Buddy Holly a decade earlier; where were we to go from here? With the collapse of the SMiLE sessions, and Phil Spector's frustration over "River Deep - Mountain High," The Beatles were unopposed in artistic expression (which led to some rather lazy production in certain points of the White Album and Let It Be) and after they dissolved, what their rivalry with Wilson had created was now gone, and is yet to be recovered.
    EDIT: I made this comment when I was like 16 lol. Brian Wilson is still one of the greatest songwriters of all time and the Rubber Soul/Pet Sounds era was a very interesting time in music. And the White Album is dope! It just has a few tracks like Honey Pie that are weird is all. Overall, I think I overstated this a bit. Thanks for the up votes though!

      I don't think there's too much of the Beach Boys catalogue that stands up. "God Only Knows" is a terrific song. "Heroes and Villains" is his masterpiece. Great song. Best part is when they come out of the middle part with the da da da’s and hold that suspended note for a moment, and then resolve it. Heaven. Gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. Paul McCartney calling another composer a genius is like Albert Einstein calling a physicist a genius.

    There's a video of George Martin going to Brian Wilsons house and they're listening to the original master tracks of ''God Only Knows'' at the mixing console. Martin is messing with the sliders bringing tracks in and out to which Wilson says, ''You know what? That is a better mix than I had for the master.'' Martin replies, ''Never.'' Wilson's response was, ''George, I can't believe this is happening.''

    • @lollages111
      @lollages111 6 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      It does - it just isn't in the charts (mostly). It's like saying there are no good writers since Shakespeare or Dickens etc - if you get to a library and get searching, you'll soon find some gems. Same with music, if you expect the charts to spoon feed you the best music then you're going to be disappointed. You've got to put a bit of effort in and look for it. In the past you could search through a record store - now you've got to explore on Spotify or TH-cam etc. There are some amazing artists out there - but you won't hear them through your radio these days. The music business has changed a lot since the 60's and some stuff just isn't deemed ''commercial'' enough for the masses to ever get a sniff of it.
