That Sixties Music - The 1958 McCARTNEY SONG THAT NOBODY WANTED - Not Even The Beatles

- He wrote it when he was 16 and didn’t like it. It remained unfinished and unpublished until 1964 when it became a top 10 international hit.
But the Beatles didn’t record it.

I've always loved this song, and finding out McCartney wrote it made the story almost legendary. The fact it was a hit goes to show that not all music critics are right.
Thanks for the view!
Music critics !! what do they know ???
Critics? Who gives a crap what they think?
We could tell it was a McCartney song. That Peter was his girlfriends brother was a give away. Then, later, we found it indeed was. My brother was a big fan of credits. He knew every song writer, movie director and so forth
Great story
I’m 77 years old and grew up in the Philippines. I’ve always loved Peter and Gordon and my favorite song A world without love!
Thanks SO MUCH for the view! Please help me spread the love 💕 by sharing the video and the channel!
A song written by Paul McCartney cartney!
Pure Paul!
I agree with you. I always thought Peter and Gordon were going far. I go to pieces was my favorite. I met Gordon at a Beatles convention in Chicago, I can't remember what year tho
Nice work on this one. Just goes to show that even McCartney’s self deemed B list material was more top shelf than many other artist’s A list material. It’s amazing how easy it became for him to make it flow like water out of a tap…
Well said, Marty! And Thanks for the view, as always!!
That song that wasn't good enough for the Beatles went to #1 on the charts.
I'm sitting there with my youngest daughter (25 years old) and we're watching that "Get Back" documentary... the episode where Paul McCartney was writing the song "The Long And Winding Road" in the studio with the cameras rolling. He starts off with the first verse written, and he's starting to flesh out the second verse singing "The wild and windy night...something something, something something..." By the end of that episode he's got the song fully done and we're both floored. I look over and she's actually crying. She says "I can't believe I'm sitting here literally watching him create this beautiful masterpiece." The man is a genius.
I couldn’t have said it better!
Cool story🥳🔔🌪️
It goes to show how immensely talented Paul is. Even a little song, quickly written is enough to propel other people’s careers to number 1 when they couldn’t do it themselves! Mind blowing.
Well said!!
I always wished he would have kept writing more rocking numbers instead of the polkas and oompah tunes he ended up mostly writing.
Wow! So glad I found this! I am also 77 (someone else mentioned their age) and grew up with the Beatles and the “British Invasion”. I swear my friend had the first Beatle record in America. His aunt in the UK sent him a 45 with four songs on it saying, “These are the hottest musicians in Europe.” Back in the 60’s we had no idea who collaborated with who so your insight makes those memories even more precious! Thank you,
Gianni❤

I am sorry you were treated so callously. Kids of a certain age can be terrors, even if they're family, sad to say. Want you to know, you look like a very kind person, probably bc you know what thoughtlessness can do. God's peace to you & yours.
@@slukky Thanks for your caring words. The experience definitely makes me much more kind, especially to those rejected by most other people.
I've always loved "A World Without Love" & Peter & Gordon: I was 10 & 1/2 when it came out Feb. 24th, 1964❣
Yeah. The melody and bridge are infectious. Thanks for watching! Please help me to spread the love 💕 by sharing the videos!!
@@the_guitar_trooper, If you check out james james cover version on TH-cam, I think you'll enjoy it. He also did a version of I Go To Pieces on TH-cam, both as james james, & earlier as privettricker. Thanks for reaching out, I can only imagine how busy you must be! Kind regards❣
It was a little less than a month to my 12th bday on Feb 9th, 1964 . By April '65 my brother, an old friend and a new friend were playing our first gig at the 'YMCA' where we recruited another new friend with a Wurlitzer elec. piano. Called out band the Barons. Cheezy name , huh ?
@@deandavidson1375, "The Barons" would have been a great name in the '60s: today "The Barrens" might be more relevant with climate change & all the other environmental damage. I was 1-2mos. shy of 15 in1967 when I picked up a guitar. My 1st song was "A Lighter Shade of Pale" by "Procol Harum", because EVERYBODY else was learning or played "E.B. & the Animals" "House of The Rising Sun" & I was sick-to-death of hearing it, much less learning it, & liked Procol Harum a whole lot better🤣😂🥲😏! Thanks for reaching out: I'm sorry to have kept you waiting! "Break-a-leg" & kind regards❣
I’ve always loved that song as well! I was in fact 12 at the time. Peter and Gordon were another fave of mine, although the Beatles were my fave. I’ve always said that I vaulted into instant puberty when I first saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show in1963! ❤️. Thank you for this story, Mr. Guitar Trooper!
Fascinating story which again demonstrates the pure musical genius of Paul! Thanks GT for keeping the music alive and well! 👍👍📀📀
Thanks as always for listening!
Have loved that song since I was 10 in 1964. Those were exciting times!🎉❤
Yep! Thanks for watching!
I'm the same age and I also loved that song as well as The Knight in Rusty Armour by Peter and Gordon.

Old guy here, loved the music of that time period. My mom worked in a Woolworth and I recall the Beatles bobble heads on display. She's 101 and I reminded her of the bobble heads and wished we'd bought the whole display and assured our early retirements.
Hi Doug! What a memory to have!! Please help me spread the love 💕 by sharing the video!!
My mom worked at a Cohen's drug store. I still have a Beatle Booster button. One if the misprints. I reads ' Beatle Booster' which was used later in "Help". My mom could get every record there was through one of the distributors who delivered to Cohen's. The invasion changed my life.
Spell check corrected my text. It was a misprint (are you paying attention, spell check?)
@@the_guitar_trooper sorry hit the wrong button . . here I go again . . It was a misprint ( I'm gonna have to re-correct this a few times) it reads ' Beatle Booster' see it did it again. It wouldn't be a joke in the movie "Help" if it read 'Beatle Booster'. OK , spell check, I'm gonna help you. It is spelled like Seattle, get it spell check? I'm trying impart a story of some interest for Beatle fans. OK, spell check , remember it's like Seattle, my button reads Beattle Booster. Finally! Haven't seen another like it since back then I have seen some mis-printed stickers
Ive still got a set of bobble heads in display cases in my living room!

I love Paul. I love the Beatles, together, solo, and in any variation. I love Peter and Gordon, and World Without Love was a radio hit. I adored it. It was one of the first singled I got. I’ll be 70 on the last day of May, and I only learned that Paul wrote this song a few years ago. I was surprised that it took so long post the start of the internet for this info to reach me. American here living in South Africa. I was born in 1960 and loved hearing this story. I'm a music artist myself and have produced an epic Christian album which is an American/South African project. I wrote all the songs and melodies, but had it all arranged and produced here using local talent....which is awesome! I might add, that your never too old, or poor to follow your dreams. Great video! At last, someone produces a Beatles story that hasn't been done a hundred times!
Glad you liked it! And, let me assure you, finding true trivia on these guys is tough. I always get peppered by chatter from hard core fans that know the stuff. My hope is that I can deliver it in a way that isn’t just dry facts, because dry facts are a lot easier to find!!
That is why I endeavor to structure my videos as stories with a beginning, middle, and end. I can’t always do it, though. Then it’s not as interesting.

Vic flick was a renowned session guitarist in England. Play the James Bond theme and many others. He was on Pawn Stars and sold that guitar. He had a list that showed what songs he used it on. I believe that he got 50k for it

Hello from England ~ I was a teenager at the time the Beatles hit the scene. Up until then the most popular songs were mainly solo artists. This radically changed as more and more groups followed in the wake of the Beatles. There was no other group like them! At one point the New Musical Express paper list all top-ten best selling records as Beatles songs (perhaps someone could verify that). The Beatles spearheaded the famous 'British Invasion' and encouraged other groups to follow. The Beach Boys from the 'good ole USA' were a fabulous group much loved and admired by me, who had their own unique style: 'Good Vibrations' was a particular favourite of mine.
Hi Stephen!
WOW, Thanks for the GREAT POST and your view!!
Yet again, the Trooper knocks it out of the park (baseball, yes? I'm British so my exuberances would be cricket-related and make no sense!).
You've got this whole spinning the narrative out thing up to mastery lever, Sir Trooper. Six minutes on the edge of my seat this time ... the mounting tension and building excitement ... and it turns out to be a song we all know but about which we have hitherto known next to nothing!
Actually, thinking about it, maybe "knocked it for six" would be an understatement anyway. I'll keep the baseball reference. ;)
Thank you, Trooper.
Hey David! Thanks for the great comment and kind words!!

McCartney's demo of "World Without Love" shows a different feel to the song. Once the song was in the hands of Peter & Gordon and their producer it was a vast improvement to the song. Definitely not a song for the Beatles. Lennon and Harrison thought the line "Please lock me away" was a joke. Imagine their amazement when the song became a number one song in many countries.
No, when Paul performs a song it has a completely different feel to it, outworldly
It’s a wild business alright.
Im not surprise the Beatles did not record this song even though im sure its John Lennon who dislike becàuse Paul wrote it not him.
I’m not sure about that one. Both of them helped to record other songs that they personally didn’t like, written by the other guy.
All though I’m familiar with many details of this story I still enjoyed it very much. I’m a self proclaimed musicaholic and I love such stories. I love all the different variations of RnR up until about the mid 90’s. To day for me personally I find it much harder to find music I love.
