      he'd have written so many more great songs if not for that untimely death. then he'd have joined the Travelling Willburys or Ringo's all -stars. Here comes the Sun was Holly influenced ,as George and the boys were big fans. Lennon called it a "Buddy Holly type song".in fact, it's a little redundant of me to point it out, Buddy having had such a lasting impact on the BEATLES.

    I think people take for granted how down to earth Paul M is.
    This guy is a musical legend. He could be all pious and "Well I've done it all, you have my work on my recordings", and sit there like a bump on a log. Instead he doesn't mind whipping out a guitar and playing his or anybody else's stuff live just for the love of playing. I will always respect and admire him for that, almost more than I do for his body of work.

      Well here's a thing about the Beatles. they all played music for the sake of music, whether it's recording or live. but here's something, they stopped playing live. Why? because the fans would get so loud they couldn't hear themselves. they were practically playing nothing at that point. so they started recording full time.

    • @JesseDylanMusic

      +Dao Yang Paul wanted to keep playing live. George was scared of getting shot! And then, it was John that got shot. :( Ringo just sat back on the drums and thought, "Oh hell, what have I gotten myself into."

      Buddy boy, there is what happens when a camera is "ON" and there is "Everywhere else." None of us are in the man's house, none of us are in the car with him, none of us are married to him. This "St. Paul" thing is similar to "St. John" and "St. George." The fabs are people, like you and me. They take a daily dump. Their breath stinks sometimes. They are not saints who walk the earth blessing each and every creature all the days of their lives. Dig?

    • @JesseDylanMusic
      @JesseDylanMusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I agree, but I think what he was saying, is that if Paul wanted, he could pretend to be more than a man. But Paul owns it, never acts like he's better than the rest of us. All the Beatles were pretty frank about their pooping habits. :)

    Before and now...Paul has always been a humble guy...he really, really loves music. When it comes to music, he is driven. I think he will keep on making music to small or large events, old or young until he becomes unable to do so. His voice may change, same with his looks, but he is Paul McCartney ....a husband, father, grandfather, composer, singer, genius and a legend.

    I actually found this profoundly sad.What would Buddy have done in the last 60 years if he had lived!Would he have turned back to country music in the face of the Beatles, or would he of withstood them, and even challenged them, and still be a legendary working artist today?

    • @steveconn
      @steveconn 8 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      +neohip Buddy was already doing strings on recordings like It Doesn't Matter Anymore and True Love Ways, seven years before the Beatles thought of it. No doubt he would have continued as an innovator.

    • @kovvvas
      @kovvvas 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@steveconn Yeah, but those string ballads were more of a return to the past than an innovation thing. He was married and more mellow, less interested in rock&roll, it seems. Actually, he was falling in line with the times, as rock was dying little by little until the british invasion brought it back to the front in 63.

      honestly, I'd say the first is most likely. You don't need to understand every nuance relating to music theory to decide to write an odd chord into a progression. It is true that those were the first times those kind of chords were thrown into rhythm guitar based early rock and roll/rockabilly music.

    • @thebrazilianatlantis165
      @thebrazilianatlantis165 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Anyone as broad-minded as Buddy Holly can get interested in ambitious chords some whenever he feels like it one day. That's exactly what happened with one of the chords in Paul's "Michelle." Jazz was on the radio a lot when Buddy and Paul (and even Elvis Costello) were young. Carl Perkins, good ol' boy of all good ol' boys, used interesting chords in "Honey Don't" because why not.

    I love how he even gets all the right vocal tics in. McCartney's virtuosity as a songwriter is based in no small part on how adept he was at imitating various sounds and accents, etc. I once saw a hilarious clip of him quickly imitating enthusiastic "jive talk" as a young Beatle. And of course, you've got all those Western mannerisms he incorporated when putting American country music on Let It Be, etc. Sometimes he was very free-form when vocalizing, as with the low-to high howls he would do on some White Album and Abbey Road songs.

    Love this stuff. Borrowing chords from the parallel minor, things out of the key that weren't used often in rock.....Beatles were great for that. Peggy Sue did it with the F major. I can't play nearly as good as many people I know, but after 40 years decided to dive into theory and at least learn that language and why things work, chord selection for songs increases dramatically.....rarely used chord voicings. Some jazz guys I know said they noticed the Beatles doing things other Rock bands just weren't doing musically. Nothing difficult or out of the ordinary for jazz players, but huge for rock, and that is what drew so many of us to their music. The simplicity of rock with some really cool stuff tossed into the mix to make it better than anyone else could do.

  • @Kimians

    You gotta remove yourself from everything from 1962 onwards to 2023….and realise that this song and its diversification to such a simple thing as throwing a F chord in amongst the standard chord structure of Peggy Sue, was in its day, Way Out There Man! . They both recognise that. Love it.

    How many future British rock stars must have wanted to see Buddy when he and his crickets played to UK audiences in March 1958

    Interesting to see how these two greats are no better than I am at trying to figure out a song they've never played before. Most stars would not expose themselves like this to the public. We're lucky we've got Ronnie and Paul. Imagine Elton John doing a vid like this and singing "Let It Be Me"?

    Man to influence the Beatles as well as other iconic rock and roll bands…Buddy Holly.

    The Beatles and the Stones absolutely loved Buddy Holly. I've heard each Beatle individually praise the man. I've always thought the line in Beast of Burden, "you're a pretty pretty pretty pretty pretty pretty girl," came from "pretty pretty pretty pretty Peggy Sue."

    Norman Petty did good work. Holly's recordings there had a fresh sound that only an expert can produce.
