    If you open the workout widget on the watch and choose your workout from there instead of just selecting the run widget, you can see at the top of the screen that GPS and Heartrate are blinking. When they both are solid and you see your heart rate you are ready to press run or walk, etc. That way you know everything is locked in before you start your workout. I think Samsung planned it that way. If you want a quick run and not as accurate then just hit run and it will count down and lock on to GPS and Heartrate eventually. If you go to the workout widget first and wait then select your workout everything works pretty well and for me is pretty accurate.

    Just to add on to the running glitches, after the latest software update my Galaxy Watch 4 has been having the same GPS and pace issues on my runs, after preivously being just fine. So I think it should be fixed with a software update since that seems to be what caused it, at least in my case.

    Great video Mike! I use my Pro 5 for every day use only, not workouts. I love this smartwatch much better than the Watch 4 Classic I previously own. I got 4 days & 2 hours of battery life on the first fully charged. The 2nd time I fully charged and use my Pro 5 I got exactly 5 days of battery life before I had to recharge. So for everyday use I’m very happy with my purchase of my Samsung Watch Pro 5.

    Regarding the GPS issue as you describe with Strava. I've seen this on the tic watch as well and what I found is that I needed to turn off my GPS on my phone prior to getting to my run location. When you have your watch paired with your phone it tends to use the GPS on your phone to conserve power, so when you start running and your watch loses connection with your phone, because you left your phone in the car, you will see inaccurate GPS readings. The inaccuracy is due to the time it takes your watch to gather your location again through its internal GPS. Once I started turning off my GPS on my phone before I started my run the accuracy of the watch was much better.

    Just started using mine a couple of days ago so only a few workouts on it. Yesterday I did notice the pace was off quite a bit during my workout but the end result was fairly accurate. No issue with GPS yet. As far as size goes it is just about same size as my Fenix 6 46 mm Titanium but the Garmin is thicker then Watch 5 Pro LTE.

    I've been using my 'Pro' while cycling. I've found the GPS to be fairly accurate with tracks and speed. But I haven't really dug in too much since I rely on my Wahoo for all numbers. I do like having the LTE on my watch so I don't have to carry my phone while riding.
    My first few days I had everything turned on and my battery didn't even last 1 day. Since I now turn on/off features as needed (location, NFC, etc). But I still wouldn't go more than a day without recharging. But again, I'm cycling 1-4 hours most days.

    Your analysis is spot on as is your commentary. I think a few updates from now, the 5 Pro will be a much better device. A few things I would like to see; better AOD control. The AOD I think is too bright and is likely using too much power. The compass watch face as you noted, is a mess and needs fixing. The battery life is vastly improved over the Watch 4 but still needs optimizing. It still seems to drain too fast.

    1. For the run w/o gps, there's a chance that you chose indoor run instead of outdoor run. This happened to me though w/ my garmin watch. During the run i thought i was fast. Just confirmed it after the run
    2. Strava distance discrepancy - this is happening w/ my Active 2. After testing, I found out that Strava did not consider the pause i made on my watch. Strava will record the distance minus the pause time

    I guarantee the GPS issue will not be solved via a software update. I have had the exact same issue with my Galaxy watch active 2 which I've had for over 2 years now. Three quarters of my runs record fine, the other quarter fail to connect GPS for at least the first mile if not more of a run. It's a known issue with Samsung's GPS, which is often overlooked in reviews as most tech reviewers aren't runners. I honestly thought it would be fixed by now especially considering, the 5 pro is 2 years newer, has a newer chipset, and is even on a completely different platform (Tizen-WearOS). I was looking to upgrade to the 5 pro, this issue being one of the main reasons, now I'm not so sure. How disappointing. Maybe it's time to look into an actual running watch rather than a smartwatch.

  • @wakeles
    @wakeles 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    About the gps: it's not perfect in the 5 pro. I have been using it since its release and had exactly the same experience as Mike. It happened to me in two of my workouts: it didn't record the gps data but I understood how to avoid that: I'll wait for the watch to indicate that has a gps lock (so the gps icon stops blinking or even with strava app) and then start my activity, never the other way around. According to that, I use to change my location (I live between two distant cities) and every time I arrive to the new location, it takes a long time to get a gps lock. To improve that, I set the option that uses google data to improve gps accuracy and, very important, before going for a run, I do a gps lock with my watch connected to the phone, then disconnect and start my run. Just the first time that I go for a run in a new location. If I don't do it so, it will take several minutes. It was the same with garmin, thoug, but I have to admit I prefered the way that garmin manages the injection of gps data to their wathces: you sync them manually and the phone automatically sends gps information to the watch. In Samsung you need to lock the gps using an activity tracker to do it, wich is a bit more annoyant. At least that's how I understand it works from my experience these last weeks.
    I read somewhere that there is already a firmware update solving some gps stuff, so maybe they had already solved the issues that we are talking about.
    Despite all this, I am really in love with the 5 pro. Swimming with it is just perfect. My venu was ALWAYS skipping some pool lengths whiile the samsung has never failed. Furthermore, the Samsung gives me more information about the way I run, while the venu was very poor with that. Can't say the same about the sports platform, Samsung's can't be compared to Garmin's.
    Adding the fact it should record open water swimming far better that my venu did (I will have to wait for a few months to try that), and that you can'tcompare how smooth is everything in the 5 pro and how laggy is everything in the Venu, I can say that I am much more happy with this 5 pro than I was with the Venu. Overall is a nice gadget!

      hello what do you mean by gps lock? i cannot find it anywhere neither the icon you mention also how did you manage to start navigation when walking? mine says it wong start without the phone. when i read the instruction it states i should disconnect the phone to use in build navigation... so confusing ( GW5 pro user) ? thank you for you answer

    • @wakeles
      @wakeles 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jasKSG Hi. With gps lock I mean that the watch has managed to know exactly where you are. You know that because the watch's gps icon stopped blinking. This icon is green and is located at the top of the screen, just on beside the heart that indicates that is getting (blinking) or has already gotten (not blinking) your heart rate. They both are small and you can see them at the top of activities tile.
      What I mean is: enter the sports tile, press the dots to go to the sports list and wait. You will see this icons. When the one for gps stopped blinking start your activity, never before. It can take seconds but some minutes if you havent used it at this location for a long time. I always disconnect my phone's bluetooth before going for a run to be sure that the watch is using its own gps. I hope I explained myself properly and helped you with that.

    • @wakeles
      @wakeles 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jasKSG first, try to enable always on display.
      Second, try to do a gps lock when you are connected to your phone at the location you want to use your watch. Then feel free to disconnect the phone from the watch and try again. For me this makes the watch to get a gps lock really fast.
      Appart from that, try enabling google gps precission to improve gps performance. You can do it by pressing the gps button at the watch menu, keep it pressed and you will reach a new menu. You will find the option there. This might help if you have this disabled.

      To put things in perspective: Let's compare the Galaxy watch 4 to the Galaxy watch 5 pro.

      Yea, watch 5 pro has a temperature sensor... but Let's be honest..that will never see the light of day just like the infamous blood pressure that Samaung touts LOL😁
      Watch 5 pro battery life is better but watch 4 is more sleeker, slimmer. The pro 5 is bulkier and bigger. 😁
      The back of the watch 5 pro is not titanium and the whole point to it is supposed to make you skin feel softer. 😁
      And when you add one of those $20 plus watch cases it completely covers up the titanium so what's the point? Just to walk around and say "Hey I got titanium under my watch case and I'm proud" ? 😁
      Oh and you argue that saphire glass is much more scratch resistant and stronger?
      Saphire glass is is much more susceptible to impacts due to its brittleness, and can shatter just dropping from a measly height of 3 feet. 😁
      Sapphire screens are bad for outdoor viewing as it's more reflective than glass, which means it'll be difficult to see the screen in sunny or bright conditions and a saphire screen will reflect almost twice as much light as ordinary glass. 😁

    Agree re GPS and the Strava synch. Doesn't happen on every run, but enough to make me ensure the GPS lock is there before you set off. I let Samsung Health sync to Strava to let non-Samsung/S Health users follow my runs, but use the native Samsung app for the running information. The Strava conversion always is just 'under', whatever S Health says I ran. But tbh, it's been that way ever since a S Health/Strava sync was allowed.

    I picked up the Watch 5 44mm LTE version on day one. Fabulous smartwatch but God-awful GPS, just like what you described. I always started runs manually and made sure GPS and HR were locked in and ready to go before starting. Pace would vary wildly from 6 to 11 minutes per mile and that would be true for the entire run, so it didn't finally lock in after a while. I took it back within the grace period. Honestly the Watch 3 is better looking than the Watch 4 and the watch 5 pro. That's just my opinion. I have all 3 of them. The Watch 5 pro is not really worth the price. Just save your money. Most people that say it is just want to justify the money they spend and don't want to feel stupid. So they hype the watch 5 pro. I definitely prefer the bezel over this monstrosity of watch. Even if it gives you "better" battery. I get 2 and a half out of the watch 4 and 3 days out of the watch 5 pro. So not really that much of a difference.

    The Strava issue sounds like what it does with every other tracker that imports into Strava. I've used Garmin edge computers in the past and they show different numbers than what Strava does after its processed the data, this happens with my current bike computer too which isn't a Garmin.

    • @rexdiamond
      @rexdiamond 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. I use my Garmin edge 1000 to track my bike rides and Strava frequently "adjusts" my data. It's my biggest beef with Strava other than E-bikes stealing the legitimate KOM's. I was pleasantly surprised how accurately my Galaxy watch 5 pro lines up with my Garmin edge on long rides.

    Problems with all Samsung watches are that they tend to get incrementally worse after each software update and never lasts more than 3 years. I just scored a watch 5 pro used off eBay for $202 last week. So far I do like it! However it's worth noting my previous smartwatch was the Sony smartwatch 3 back from like 2017 and the whole ecosystem has changed quite a bit since then.
    I haven't messed with the GPS yet so I can't comment on it but I did notice it's missing some apps on the playstore that are available on the galaxy watch 4 and I can't initiate phonecalls from my watch and pipe them to my Bluetooth headphones. I can only make calls *through* the watch itself acting as both the mic and speaker.
    Like you said I hope it gets more software updates to improve everything and wear OS unifies as a whole a bit better.
