I’m using a variable ND filter with a built in 1/4 pro mist on my Sirui anamorphic lenses. A bit strong bloom, but feels quite organic. I was also going for a more The Batman look. Tired of over sharpened video looks as well. Btw don’t tell anyone I use this on a GH6😜
I really love the Hollywood Black Magic 1/8. I think it's also more subtle than a Black Promist. If I want an even stronger Vintage Look I add Halation And Glow in Davinci Resolve:)
Great video. The Black Satin is one of my favorite filters. Something got messed up in your edit. I think a swoosh sound effect wasn’t properly linked or was corrupted. Every time the comparison images pop in there is an awful glitchy white noise sound. Or maybe using a MOGRT and didn’t disable the audio? Either way. Solid video.
@@BellHarrington I have the 1/8 now, but I had the 1/2 for a while. Traded it for a Pro Mist 1/4. The 1/2 was a little much for me. I do want to try out the 1/4 Black Satin. Just a little more oomph.
In case anyone wanted to know (like I did) Matti uses the Black Satin 1/2 you can see it for about a single frame at 7:01 when he's turning the step-up rings.
Great content! Love watching stuff like this! There is something weird happening with the whooshes during the side by sides that sound like a white noise glitch.
I LOVE Tiffen filters. Old school film photographer since back in the day and I'd use coloured filters for black and white photography. Tiffen make gorgeous filters!
Hey Matti, I’m not sure if this is mentioned already but around 5:16 there seems to be an audio noise issue, that sounded like an interference while recording. Several more interferences soon after this point. Hopefully just an one off exporting issue.
Hi Matti, thanks for sharing you insights on making footage look more organic with filters on your lens. While this might be a quick solution for some, I feel this is not the ideal way because it tries to 'emulate' an effect that takes place in the different emulsion layers of traditional film material - and not in front of the camera. As an alternative to using some of those filters, I would recommend the following: A) Never overexpose beyond your sensor's dynamic headroom B) For nicer highlight rolloff in general, use the Arri Alexa color space in your editing timeline - ist gorgeous what the difference is - at least in DR C) For this little glow around light sources, use the effect halation or build your own one (what I did)
I bought the Black Stein 1, that's what was in the link It feels too soft to me and I haven't been able to use it the way I like yet. I currently prefer the A7-4 without a filter if you have an idea for me I would love to hear it
Hey Matti! Loved your video and te information you privided. I've been a fan for a while now haha. I've come to tell that the glitch effect in the example parts are a bit too hight for someone using headphones. I really spikes when you hear it. But apart from that the video was perfect!
Another great video Matti! As a solopreneur DP/cinematographer here in San Diego CA, one of the ways I get motivated and stay inspired is by watching your channel! Thanks for always keeping it positive and inspiring! :)
Try the Rokinon AF 45mm 1.8. Closest "modern" lens with a little bit of character that I have run across. The Rokinon 24mm 1.8 and the 75mm 1.8 also have a bit of character as well.
Hey Matti! Personally I would recommend dividing vlogs and tutorials, as I don’t care much for tutorials - title and thumbnail didn’t make me click, but I would have cared for watching a chill vlog - what it avtually started out as. This is just my 2 cents as a viewer. For me vlogtorials have never made much sense as video is never straight to the topic. Otherwise i hope you’re great and that you appreciate this input ✌️
There are hundreds of lenses with character that are being used, and have been used for many years, just like Black Mist filters. Check out what professional photographers use. A good and cheap place to start is Carl Zeiss Jena 35mm still lenses from the 1950s and 60s, and you save time by checking the apature and focus while you shoting, instead of spending time afterwards checking if the autofocus hit the right focus.
Curious what the strength of the Black Satin filters are? In the comparisons, there's a strength rating for the Pro-Mist filters but not for the Black Satins. Are they the same, such as 6:06 shows Pro-Mist 1/2 and Black Satin, is the Black Satin also 1/2 strength?
Sooo, the issue with people recommending step-up filters, from Tiffen themselves, each focal length will present the strength of the filter differently, which is why they have so many different strengths. For instance, I used Black Glimmerglass for focal lengths 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, and 135 mm, at strengths 1, 1/2, 1/2, 1/4, and 1/8, respectively, and have found an even spread of the effect from 24-135. Also, I feel Black Pro Mist is too strong but Satin/Black Glimmerglass is not strong enough to be worth it, I more recommend a lower strength OG Glimmerglass for the best of both worlds.
which strength do you recommend? I just tested GG1, GG3 and Schneider Hollywood black magic on many focal lengths and dont really see the diffusion changing. Its kinda obvious form filter to filter but not focal length. Maybe its the F stops that change the look
Ok, whoever was editing that, thanks for putting the glitch noise in when you were trying to show the difference in the filters. When my eyes strayed, and that glitch noise sounded, it brought my attention right back to the screen! Kudos!
Gosh dangit, the Black Satin was _my_ secret! Thanks for spilling the beans 🙃 For real though, it's everything I like about the BPM with virtually none of the drawbacks-the perfect balance of increased halation and reduced contrast and resolution. Another nifty aspect is that the halation doesn't change much between filter strengths, so it's easier to match the contrast and resolution of different lenses without affecting the bloom. So good!
It does seem like the perfect blend! Are you using 1/2 as well? I'm so scared to buy one before i know that 1/2 ain't too strong of an effect. I've seen a couple reviews and it seems like everyone is comparing the 1/2 to cinebloom 10% and BPM 1/8? Seems strange since you would think those are at waaay different levels of intensity?
@@Northpaal I would honestly say the Black Satin is too subtle, and Matti is incorrectly suggesting to use the same strength on multiple focal lengths, which will vary the effect. As others have stated in the comments, glimmerglass is the perfect middle ground between black pro mist and black satin.
I love my EcoFlow, too. As a drohnen pilot with the Mavic 3 Cine Combo and the included three batteries, it's so amazing to power two of them up while flying the third one. Just amazing! By the way: Thank you for your time and the video to help us creating better content. ;-)
As much as it's a good idea to have lenses with a filmic vibe to them, I feel like it's much better to stick with using the filters so that you can only use the effect when you really need it.
I just ordered the Hollywood Black Magic 1/4 filter. I had a black pro mist ruin a shoot for me by being too heavy handed so I've been a bit turned off on them recently. Just a bit too much bloom.
Hey Matti I use the black pro mist 1/8 and Peter McKinnon ND 2-5 for music videos, but the Satin blown my mind 🧠 🤯. Thank you to made the comparison. 🍻 👏
I find with step-up rings you can get vignetting if you have too many rings and also can't use any native lens hoods - so yeah rings or no rings - well its lens dependent or even if i'm shooting video vs photo. I know you can get metal hoods on the final ring or filter. I bought expensive 82mm filters and can't use the lens hoods on my RF 24-105L and my RF 70-200L F4 lenses since its 77mm.
Love your product placement. So well done and informative. If all product placements were like that, well. Have you tried to see if the green floater is still there with the filter as close to the lens as possible? (try shining a very bright flashlight through a triple glazed window at night). I agree about lens character. I've had a few over the years that just had that special sparkle.
You should try Davinci Resolve! 10x less crashes than adobe, and the fastest render time ever! Plus best color grading/correcting in the game! Bit of a learning curve for fx going from layers to nodes but easy to learn and 1000's of tutorials lol. Such a step up in the software realm and renders, fx, color correcting/grading, audio, etc editing is so much better! And it's free!! *

theres a very sharp white noise that hurts my ears around the 5 min mark. i heared it twice now. (every time when you do the no filter/with filter)
