    First of all, that 80-point turn that person was making at around the 2:30 mark was ATROCIOUS lol. Second, I watched this whole video man, glad YT suggested this for me. Gained a new SUBSCRIBER for sure. Lastly, I think I like the 1/4 Glimmerglass. Feels and looks like it "seals the deal" a little better. Crushes / bakes in the things I wanna see, sharpness - contrast - shadows, etc.. I just feel like it pulled it all together better. Anyway, great video man, glad to be here !

    Great video Michael, I am just a hobbyist hack photographer and have been a Sony shooter since they bought Konica Minolta back in the early 2000's, I have had a change in my vision, in my 60's and just found a change that i am drawn to the B filter Glimmerglass , I don't believe i have ever heard of Tiffen, now i will check them out for sure, my current filter selection is a mixture of Hoya and a few other brands, that work ok, now i am finding a need to use something that's easier for me to use, I have floaters in one eyed i think after this Tiffen maybe a good investment for me and my hobby, Thx again 👍

      @mahartman  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Uncle Bob! Thanks for this comment. Tiffen makes some awesome filters. Definitely check them out.
      Glimmerglass is a pretty slick filter that’s been around for a while now. It’s subtle, gentle, but really creates a bloomy, filmic image. I’ve used it with still photography a bit but I have mostly used it for video/ film work.

    If you do this again please do glimmer and promist at the same intensities. Think with the amount of people who use ProMist that would be super helpful.

    Awesome comparison, though I don't really vibe with glimmerglass. I get the use case and I understand the appeal, but it's not really a look I'm ever trying to achieve.
    Though im typically shooting with very clinical glass. I could see it being a good option if you're shooting with something vintage and don't want to add more softness to the image, while still blooming your highlights.

    • @mahartman
      @mahartman  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That’s exactly the opinion I was hoping for and it’s totally fair. I really wanted people to see what these filters did in a few use cases, in order to know what they do so WE can decide if and when to use/ buy/ try.

    Great video! I've been looking for a replacement to my promist which broke in my bag after some rough backroad driving in WV a while back, and this helped me see some cool options. The more that I've used the Black Pro Mist the more I don't like how aggressive they are with the highlights and the loss of contrast. I'm trying out Glimmer Glass on my X100VI and it's been nice. Im probably going to replace my Pro Mists.

      Shimmer and Black Pearl are going to yield similar results, but for cheaper, you may have to lean more towards the used market (it’s fairly easy to find some used filters on fb or eBay). Hope this helps!

    My Glimmerglass 1 creates less bloom in bright lights than my Schneider Hollywood Black Magic 1/8 but the Hollywood softness look is more subtle than the GG 1. you have to test these in person to see what works best for you but I never liked the overdone Pro Mist filters. Too 80s soft for my taste.

    the added grain and colour grade distracted from the purpose of the video which is seeing the differences between filtrations. A standard 709 conversion and a bit of contrast for the comparison clips could've been better so we really appreciate in detail.

    • @mahartman
      @mahartman  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I can see that. I played with the idea of adding in a "rec709" portion to each clip during the sequence, but decided against it in the end. Hope you still got something out of it though.

    • @mahartman
      @mahartman  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I laugh too! Though there's positives to both though. Low-res imaging and then diffused artistic intent creates a mucky image. With a higher resolute base image, the palette for your intent becomes stronger and clearer. That's my experience anyway. Still...makes me laugh ha.

    • @chevonpetgrave4991
      @chevonpetgrave4991 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This comment assumes, rather ego centrically, everyone’s intent on technical and/or creative decisions for certain specs.
      Some like more resolution for the sake of it.
      Some like it for the headroom in editing (stabilization, reframing, down scaling etc).
      Some prefer a particular sensor/pixel layout design (OLPF, WRGB, Equal RGB pixels) which might come on a particular camera or mandate high resolution sensor in the case of the Blackmagic 12K equal RGB pixels) technology.
      When it comes to filters the same applies.
      Some like to counter the SIDE effects of a high resolution sensor they prefer for other reasons mentioned above (to your point although there is often good reasons behind it contrary to the implication of otherwise).
      These pro mist and permalescence filters can be used practically for high dynamic scenes with cameras that have limited dynamic range.
      They can be used creatively to give a similar effect to using a fog machine in an interior high contrast ratio scene for a slight volumetric atmosphere feel as opposed to heavier contrasty scene.
      The wide use cases and reasons for choosing a filter or high resolution camera or both are so many that to assume “the one reason people do it makes no sense:”
      hopefully you see where the flaw in that logic is.
