    I think the Tiffen looks the most natural. I prefer the 1/8 strength because it doesn’t bloom quite as much as 1/4.

      also the halation around the lightsource is way more contained and looks more like something youd get from cinestill or similar

      The moment looks exactly like the NiSi MC Black Mist. A cheap Chinese option. My guess is that they are just rebranding it. I bought one NiSi MC Black Mist for 1/3 the price of a BPM. For the chinese price it's worth it. But Moment is selling it way higher than the Chinese price. Just a ripoff.

    I think why I like the cinebloom the most is because it still shows the light source with nice halation around it instead of it looking like a big smudge.

    Glad someone made this video! I think another video said the Moment 20% was best for night shots and the 10% for day ones. I'm going to pick them up and try it out to see myself. I've been a Pro Mist 1/4 user pretty exclusively. That lifted black look could possibly be useful for certain projects

    Tiffen Black pro mist comes in 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, and 3 on popular sizes like 82mm. According to moment’s site the 10% is comparable to a 1/2 and the 20% is like a 1. Thanks for the comparison!

    • @mike.canvas
      @mike.canvas 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      that's crazy how Moment compares it like that. after watching this video, the TIffen at 1/4 looks more strong than the Moment at 10% (1/2). I would of been fooled if it was said it's more like a 1/4 or even between 1/8 and 1/4 rather than a 1/2.

    • @quasarkitten
      @quasarkitten 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mike.canvas Agreed. I have the 10% and the 20% and the 10% seems stronger than my 1/4. My guess and non-scientific testing is that the 10% has about the same highlight diffusion as the 1/4, but it looks like more diffusion because the Tiffen retains more contrast in the shadows. I still find a use for the Tiffen, because I don't always want to lift my blacks as much. I like that i have the option of both products.

  • @Amazazing32
    @Amazazing32 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Really appreciated the effort and detail you've put into this video man! I came across the moment lens not long ago, but now I'm also considering the Tiffen Black Pro Mist.
    Like you showed in different situations, it's easier/harder to notice the subtle differences in halation and quality between the two. But somehow I find myself gravitating to the Tiffen because of how much it more retains the contrast and saturation of colours, whereas the Moment lens produces a grey cast across the screen.

  • @MattSpaugh
    @MattSpaugh 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video. I love your stuff. Canon FD with the Tiffen 1/4 really floats my boat. I have to wonder if there is a good post-production option for getting this effect. Coming from an audio production background my tendency is to always 'record clean' and manipulate in post. It seems like quite a bit of commitment to force a look on the original footage.

  • @iamngkalon
    @iamngkalon 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    thanks for the test! it helps a lot, in my opinion i prefer keep tiffen in one since it still much like reality and it can be use in most the time, and also i will prefer one more dream filter to deal with some fancy or dreamy shot to make a quite different texture in shot. hope it can help people in doubt with that :)

  • @russellbaston1223
    @russellbaston1223 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I've been experimenting a bit with diffusion filters, both Cineboms and K+F 'black mist' ( a similar to but much less expensive Tiffen) My conclusion, so far is that the scene they're used in is critical to the overall end result. A high key subject imho needs a lower 'strength' filter as the diffusion tonal dilution can end up with a "milky" look, I see Moment have now added a 5% to their range which I think could perhaps be to use in such circumstances, a 'black filter' might be my overall choice for high key. Concersely a low key scene especially night shots in urban environments can take much higher levels of diffusion the 20% Cinebloom works fine and if you want to push it to semi fantasy/dreamy ,using the 10% and 20% together works.

    Thanks for the tip on simply getting a step up ring. I wish I watched this last week when I bought two sets of other filters, but at least they were just cheap filters. I had a Tiffen 1/4 & 1/2 72mm in my cart last night ready to be bought for my main lens (Nikkor Z 24mm 1.8) and then after seeing this I swapped it to the 82mm and bought a set of step down rings as well as getting a couple specifically to go from 82mm to my two lenses to save time (since, they're barely $15 so who cares). I'm completely new to cameras. I've finally taken the plunge and bought a Nikon Z6II for my overhead camera for my piano videos. Been using Gopro's for years and tired of the crazy distortion and lack of low light control (well, my area isn't low light but it is to a gopro). Figured I'd try these filters to try to get a different look. In your comparisons, looks like the Tiffen blacks look far better. That a good thing since my keyboard is black. In some of the others, the blacks looked very washed out. Thanks again!

I would like to use the lens Sony 24-105mm on my Sony A7IV, then I would like to apply a Nisi Black Mist on it, and on the black mist I’d like to put the ND64 6stops + CPL integrated filter by Nisi. Will I make a mess of my photos and videos? Would this be a bad choice to make? Is the 24-105mm G really less sharp, bidimensional, sad looking and not good in night, low light or indoors situations? Cause my intention is to get a tridimensional, cinematic looking on my photos and videos.

    From the examples I’ve seen so far, it looks like the cinebloom desaturates the entire image quite a bit and effects overall contrast/lifts the shadows, while the pro mist, which I use all the time, just sticks to the contrast in the high mids and highlights.

    what f stop are you using - I bet that has an effect on the differential blooming between highlights and shadow

    Great video! I’m curious to know how adjusting aperture affects the mist effect. Or for example using them on a cropped sensor camera.

      the most noticeable change in the diffusion amount is when you vary the focal lenght (therefore the cropping factor as well) due to the resulting magnification of the image in front of the lens, including the optical characteristics of the diffusion filter. ie: the more you zoom in, the stronger the diffusion becomes.

      @@adeadolfo ah that makes sense - thanks for chiming in - if I follow your explanation correctly (not had my coffee) this means that on a cropped sensor camera one could use "lighter" / less diffusing filters to get a similar result as on a full frame camera fitted with a stronger diffusion filter. For some reason I expected the inverse relationship to be true.

      @@AndriSoren You got it right! Apparently it is quite common to use 1/4 on wide lenses and 1/8 on larger focal lenght ones to match the softness on a sequence with both wide and close-up shots...

    One nice effect from the bloom is that it helps communicate the color of a bright practical light. For example, that tube light might be capable of a wide variety of color temperatures, but there's a good chance the outline of the tube itself is going to be completely white in the finished piece. The light could even be orange, magenta, cyan, even a really bright red, and still the bulb itself can appear white depending on what else is going on. But when you've got bloom, that bloom doesn't necessarily suffer the same blow-out. Optics only clip in technology, not in nature (unless you want to get into quantum mechanics). It's the kind of thing that would be hard to fix in post. Imagine if, for some reason, the tube light is completely in focus, and the image is tack-sharp with no bloom when it's captured. Your editing software has no idea that it was an orange light. It just sees the white. So if you apply a bloom effect in post, the bloom will just be white, unless for some reason you exposed way to the left.
    It's something we don't think about too much. If we look at a red light in real life, no matter how bright that light it, it's still going to look red. But in film, that same light might appear white or yellow or cream, with a strong red bloom around it. And without having to think about it, our brain informs us that the light is red because the bloom gives us that evidence.

    it'd be interesting to compare these to a post processing recreation of their effect.

      yes, definitely. but because most vari nd’s are larger on the outside, put the diffusion filter on first.

    What is the difference between a filter and doing this in post with luma key and blur? Thanks!

      @matheauFX I had the same question. I think you miss the softening / fall off of the skin tones since you are only dealing with the light halation in post. Is that right?
