After winning the 1965/66 Football League, Liverpool got another shot at the European Cup.
They slogged their way past Petrolul Ploiesti in the first round to earn a trip to Amsterdam, where they would play Rinus Michels' Ajax. The game would enter Ajax folklore as "De Mistwedstrijd" - The Fog Match.

Inter Milan was a robbery and Liverpool should probably have won the cup that season, but Ajax was a lesson. Football had moved on. I don’t think ‘73 would have happened without this lesson. Paisley took them to a whole new level but the foundation was the lesson learned at Ajax.
