The other day I stumbled upon a Dutch conversation in the TH-cam comments. I actually could understand a lot of it using my English and German knowledge. Maybe I should learn more about it^^

Hippopotamus is actually similar to 'nijlpaard' btw. It comes from Greek, with hippo meaning horse and potamus meaning river in Greek.

@@Guitarxdrnh I just like languages/cultures in general and apparently Dutch is one of the easiest for native English speakers to learn since a lot of the words are similar. I guess I really have no actual reason to learn it other than just... exercising my brain hahaha :)

The combination of two vowels making a new sound is called a diphthong! Love the video btw!
The 'me' in 'ik voel me...' and the equivalents in German and French are all called 'reflexive pronouns'. They indicate that the subject and the object of the verb are one and the same, or that the speaker is describing their own state of being in the case of 'voelen'. It's definitely challenging explaining this to English speakers because English doesn't really use reflexive pronouns and verbs anymore.

I've been learning Dutch on duolingo and these two phrases have come about. I thought they were random sentences but are they actually real expressions?!

Fun fact: when the sound moves from one sound to another (like these vowel teams) it’s called a diphthong!

i think a sweet translation is the dutch word Knuffel Wich means hug (you know this offcourse) but is also the word for the toys kids sleep with :) (some adults)
Oh yes, I never thought of it this way! And I guess I'm one of the adults who sleeps with a knuffel haha.
The words at 23:15 are called "prepositions" in English
With winter approaching I will need to look out my hand shoes and watch out for those ice bears 😂

Handschoenen is in german the same just in german. Handschuhe wich also means Hand shoes basically. And Toiletbril is in german klobrille (toilet glasses) and ijsber is in german Eisbäre (ice bear)- the similarities are crazy

In sweden it's the opposite. We eat hot for lunch and cold for dinner.

I can speak a little Dutch because I'm from Indonesia, greetings from Bali
In Denmark we also say: “Isbjørn” wich would also translate to “ice bear”
How strange that the dutch word for bear is exactly the same as old norse one, wich is also bjørn, or sometimes written björn. Ø an ö in old norse is the same. I really find some old norse in dutch. Pronouciation are also often quit similar, for the "ei" it's the same and also for the "au" and "j"

Ik besef nu pas hoe veel regels Nederlands schrijven/spreeken heeft normaal denk je daar niet over na en hoe dom sommige dingen klinken maar keep up the good work
Het heet pindakaas en geen Pindaboter omdat boter vroeger een beschermde term was.
Vroeger, nog steeds! Iets waar geen minimaal aantal zuivel inzit mag geen zuivelproduct genoemd worden.
Zelfde bij bijvoorbeeld van die goedkopen vlokken, geen chocoladevlokken maar cacaofantasie.
