    Aardvark is actually what we call that animal too, we got it from afrikaans (so, dutch).
    Ant bear is just a cute term for them, like "trash panda" for Raccoon

    In French, Racoon is "Raton laveur" ( = washing baby rat). It's called like that because they often wash their food before eating it (thanks Wikipedia), so that explains their name in Dutch (and in German too, Waschbär) !

    In Italian, the racoon is also called "orsetto lavatore" which is basically wasbeer.
    It has the habit of washing its food in water.

    Regarding "Schildpad", I looked it up and apparently "pad" is used for toad in some parts of the UK also. Trivial, but I thought it was interesting as of course the two languages are related.

    I don’t know if anyone’s already said this but we also call aardvarken ‘aardvarks’ in English! I’ve never heard them being called ant bears before but I really liked it and now I’m thinking I should refer to them as ant bears from now on

    rhino is similar in slovak because the literal translation of "nosorožec" means like.. someone (an animal) with a horn on its nose. and then a raccoon is "medvedík čistotný" which means clean little bear because i think raccoons are known for washing their little paws and/or food? then an armadillo is "pásavec" which roughly means an animal with belts, "pás" being belt.

    Wash bear is because raccoon “wash” their food in water so that their paws get wet and more sensitive to that they can feel what they are eating since their eyesight isn’t the best

    In the USA we call Pissenbed: pill bugs (rollie pollies) and isopods.
    Rollie (Rool-ee) Pollies (Pool-ees). I'm not sure the origin of it is but it sounds cute to refer to them as rolling bugs, since they are able to form a ball shape.

    Hippo, or in full hippopotamus, is essentially the same as nijlpaard, only it's "river horse" instead of the Nile specifically, and it's simply the same as the scientific name. Same goes for centipede/millipede. So in some cases the Dutch name is just the literal translation of the scientific name.

    I always thought you were Belgian, i have no clue why. But the Dutch words compared to German words is interesting, we share a lot of the descriptive language and ideas. Dutch and German aren't that close in syntax, but the ideas and lot of the sounds behind the words seem to be mostly the same.
    Here are the Dutch and German words for the same thing with the exact same meaning behind the word pairs or if they are not their description:
    Schildpad = Schildkröte ✔
    Naaktslak = Nacktschnecke ✔
    Zeehond = Seehund ✔
    Nylpaard = Nielpferd ✔
    Vleer muis = Fledermaus ✔ (didn't know Fleder was a German word for wing, too, so this way i even learned something new for my own language! :D)
    Wasbeer = Waschbär ✔
    Duizendpoot = Tausendfüßler ✔
    Pissenbed =/= Holzlaus ❌ (Holzlaus literally just means "wood louse")
    Wandelende tak =/= Stabschrecke ❌ (Stabschrecke just means "stick bug")
    Luipaard =/= Leopard ❌ (A unique name, no german words in there, means we probably just stole it from the Dutch without knowing what the words mean, just that it is attributed to Leopards)
    Buidelrat = Beutelratte ✔
    Aardvarken =/= Ameisenbär ❌ (Ameisenbär means "ant bear")
    Neushoorn = Nashorn ✔
    Gordeldier = Gürteltier ✔
    Pretty cool, i should learn Dutch, seems easy to do for a German and vice versa.

    Another awesome video - thank you! And re: raccoon/wasbeer: the "wash bear" thing is interesting, because everything with English is always weird and/or straight stolen - in America, raccoon comes from the native Powhatan, where the English first encountered the raccoon, whereas in Spanish, it's mapache, from the Aztec. (Both of those are in reference to how raccoons have grabby little hands.) But when the raccoon crossed the Atlantic, the main thing everyone noticed was that it appears to wash its food (check out "raccoon cotton candy" videos), hence "wash bear." (Or in French, "raton laveur" - washing rat.)
