    This is an Oscar winning acting - shame she was not even nominated for this scene as far as I know, and she has never won one.

      Annette Bening was originally cast as Catwoman; Pfeiffer replaced her due to the former actress' pregnancy. Pfeiffer's portrayal of Catwoman was voted #3 in Empire magazine's 'Sexiest Movie Characters of All Time'.
      In a September 1999 Entertainment Weekly on-line poll she placed second in the category of Best Modern Actress; beaten only by Meryl Streep.

    I grew up with this movie. By far one of my most favorite scene transformations. As a child I used feel heartbroken for Selina Kyle/Catwoman. Everything about this scene screams fury and transition. With the music score synching with her breakdown, ugh, pure genius. Epic to the core. . .

      Not just "for you." She is the best Catwoman, objectively.

    • @chadwickross8985
      @chadwickross8985 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      subjective
      existing in the mind; belonging to the thinking subject rather than to the object of thought (opposed to objective).
      pertaining to or characteristic of an individual; personal;
      a subjective evaluation
      Source:
      www.dictionary.com/browse/subjectively
      Catwoman quintessentially exists within the scope of subjectivity. She is a conceptualized character that has no life of her own (in reality, which actually *is* objective, when factoring out the Human point of view of it's existence) outside of the ideas Catwoman's 'creator(s)' applied to her fictionalized identity and the further watered down impressions others come to formulate of her as a result of how she's depicted by writers, comic artists and actors.
      She may *literarily* exist (as an idea) but does not *literally* exist, thus, she has no objectivity. None.
      Additionally, considering that Catwoman has gone through many defining changes (in a literary context) with the passage of time, this opens her up to even more interpretation, making her even more abstract and less concretized. There are many renditions of 'Catwoman', Michelle Pfeiffer hardly represents her first literary inception, considering she was fictionally created well before women were so outwardly liberal and extroverted and has undergone many other radical alterations since then (no sewing machine whim induced episode pun intended).
      So yes OP, by the very nature of 'her' mutable and fictionalized existence, it would indeed be 'for you', as it is for each one of us.

    The apartment represented the old her Everything she was but never wanted to be Everything she let other people turn her into.And everything she hated about herself because of it a lifetime spent being too afraid to take risks. Doing everything by the book She was going through the motions.sleepwalking through a life Which basically amounted to nothing And ended up getting her killed this scene is about Her finally standing up for herself Taking a long hard look in the mirror Finally realizing her worth. and saying Enough!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • @hughmellerick4417
      @hughmellerick4417 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      That's one way of looking at it, and fair play, a decent one.
      I agree that the apartment represented the 'old her', but one that was gentle, loving and innocent. You can clearly see that she was
      - responsible: she held down a job, paid her rent, and kept her cat well, and
      - loyal and caring: she tenaciously researched the files on the proposed power plant. Granted, she found out the whole thing was a sham, but regardless her motivation was only to help.
      She was a good, helpful person.
      Had she been somebody that others wanted to be, she would have become more than "just a lowly secretary" as was obviously her mother's wishes.
      No, Selina was a good, kind, caring, loyal, diligent person and worker, asking for little in return, like so many millions, whose contributions go completely unheralded and unrecognised, because they, like Selina, are too 'agreeable' as Jordan Peterson would say.
      It's not wrong to be agreeable; rather it's wrong to take advantage of it, and not acknowledge people like Selina.
      She *wanted* to be a good worker and contributor, so in many ways she was trying to live the life she wanted; but the predators and uncaring people of this world made it impossible for her to remain thus.
      When she realises it, she loathes ALL representations of her kind self, as it made her vulnerable, and she feels HORRIBLY betrayed by those who took her for granted and abused all her goodness. The real tragedy for her is her rage crushing this good side; it's like she's killing something which she knows isn't wrong, and is innocent and pure - but still, vulnerable.
      It's Shakespearean really. Never have I seen such a complex and utterly tragic killing of one's own self whilst still knowing that that self was and still is good. It makes the rage and turmoil all the more painful and terrible which releases more pain and rage again. So, so, terribly sad.
      Peace :)

    Michelle did a great job as Catwoman it shows how she lived a lonely existance and she hated her boss and the main reason why she had a meltdown is because everything went wrong and she focused her anger on Max Shrek her boss who threw her out of a window and she had a head injury and thats why she went crazy! She was completely haunted by her past and emotions! I like how she saids Its always Semi Normal People who let you down sickos don't scare me least their committed how TRUE!

    Would it not be giving Ms. Pfeiffer enough credit to say that this is one of my favorite performances of hers? I love this scene in general. It perfectly encapsulates so much - the frustration of an underpaid, underappreciated working woman, the disgust for a society that has one idea of what a woman should be and and she should behave, and obviously, the intense rage one would feel after your boss attempts murder. Everything about this just screams, "Fuck you!" in the most epic possible way. This scene is perfectly acted, directly, designed, and scored.

    There's something really heartbreaking about this scene. When she destroys the symbols of her childhood and fully breaks down, it always gets me. She lives a sad and lonely life, and no one cares. And you can tell she's brain damaged from her fall, which the score perfectly accentuates. She spends the rest of the movie living in a state of confusion, and she never figures out who she is or why she's doing the things she does. This is demonstrated in the scene where she's staring into a store window at a dollhouse (or her reflection; I'm not really sure), and she asks herself, "Why are you doing this?" Her tale is a tragic one.

      She was pushed over her breaking point by so many things.
      I was terrified of this scene when I saw Batman Returns on tape (I think they shortened the scene of her trashing the apartment, just leaving her looking shell shocked, pouring milk out and listening to that advertisement on her answering machine to her getting out her equipment to make her Catwoman costume.)

    When she cuts off the neon sign it saids HELL HERE! Maybe the reason for Selina Kyle's meltdown or transformation is everything just came to her when she fell out the window and her personality changed which made her bad because
    before she was a lonely woman going through life alone and when you hit your head like she did it messes you up!
    That was quite a fall she took to the blow to the head and her emotions came and hit her like a mad truck when her eyes rolled back and then when she opened her eyes she was transformed. The brain is a complex machine and her brain just went on overload or something but then again does anyone know about Selina Kyle's life before she became Catwoman I do know she was an orphan and her mother killed herself! Batman's characters are completely haunting!

    As a kid this scene frightened me, but as an adult this made Catwoman a tragic and relatable character. During her breakdown she attempts to destroy anything and everything that related to her kind and passive side. A lonely soul pushed way too far by a cruel and indifferent world. As Joker said, it took "one bad day."
    It's something I sadly relate to.

    This scene is far more amazing than it is ever given credit for. Not only has she had a Psychological break, she is so angry at everything about herself that made her susceptible to abuse. This included leaving her childhood behind, symbolized in the destruction of the kitten night dress and the doll house. Lot of sh*t happening here but in a glossy Batman film it kind of gets glazed over. Michelle earnt her cheque here and knew wtf was up.

    Everything about this scene is PO E TIC. I wonder if they know...just how much they inspire , ...how much. How the music compliments her movements, how the highs fall right on her smashing stuff, those freakin violins, her facial reactions, her breathing, her hair, her eyes, the shades, the sadness, the innocence, the betrayal, the power, the vengeance. Everything...in a spectacular scene. There is no catwoman like Pfeiffer and Burton's. She wasn't just sexiness. She was awkardness, insecurity, doubt, disorientation and pain but also endurance and strength and vengeance and passion all in one.

    certain actors just nailed it with their characters in batman, like heath ledger with his joker or michelle pfeiffer with catwoman. if they will ever do catwoman in the new DCEU, the actress playing her has some big shoes to fill in.
    btw. anne hatheway sucked in The Dark Knight Rises.

    • @jackflynn779
      @jackflynn779 9 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      +manulito2 And to think this role originally went to Annette Bening. She had to drop out because she was pregnant. Actress Sean Young really wanted this role at the time also. She even donned a Catwoman costume and confronted Tim Burton and Michael Keaton, pre production. Then she made an appearance on the Joan Rivers show with her costume on. But in the end the right actress got the job.

    • @efan2011
      @efan2011 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah pretty much it was Michelle's destiny to have the role in BR. She badly needed a role to make her career role and show how talented/gorgeous she really was. This was it, and it's a shame it wasn't respected like it deserved in 1992. She should have had more time and films to play the role too because there were a lot of missed opportunities never explored for sure.
      Benning would have done okay but she wasn't the stunner Michelle was, but who knows maybe she could have looked good in the costume. Only actress that could have maybe rivaled Michelle was Linda Hamilton but IDK if that could have worked.
