Watched this from the perspective of an acting student. I think Michelle Pfeiffer is amazing here. No disrespect to Anne Hathaway, but anyone else think Michelle is better? Just trying to see if my judgment of acting is alright.
Yeah I think Hathaway actually did a great job of portraying the character in Nolan’s universe, they’re kinda completely different characters despite having the same names. But Pfeiffer’s performance in this is criminally underrated, especially at the time. I don’t love everything about this movie but the acting is incredible and she definitely stole the show
The scene that made me cry the first time I saw it because so scary (I was 7-8 years that time). Scared with Selina's expression, the music... It gives me chills every time I rewatch it again.
First of all her sewing skills was remarkable. This is my favorite Catwoman hands down I think I even had the action figure. I felt every bit of her story.
@@Yehoshua66 I think that's what he meant.. The OP's comment was difficult to decipher in the first place. And his reply explaining it was still technically wrong.
Imo, she's got what it takes, the only thing that could ruin it is the script and directing. For example, Halle Berry made an outstanding Catwoman (at least in my opinion) but I can see how the script and directing really brought down the quality. Though, I love that movie with all my heart lol.
This iteration of Catwoman really worked. Not a cat burglar like the others but vengeful, playful, crazy, sensual, and attacked on instinct like a cat. Catwoman wasn't logical or practical or else she would've chosen a different attire and weapon. You need to be half-crazy to walk around in public at night in a thin pleather catsuit, heeled boots, and a whip. Michelle Pfeiffer made it work.
hmm kinda old comment. she did have a sewing machine lying around, so i guess she is quite proficient with sewing/tailoring. the weird thing is how she is suddenly have acrobatic skills.
In less than 10 minutes you can make a compelling character into an infinitely more Intriguing one, yet films these days need multiple movies, spinoffs and tie-in's. The art is on it's last breath.
For me this remains as the best batman movie ever with the best portrayal of Catwoman's character. I love the dark comics theme and yet the season was Christmas. There's magic in this movie every time I watch it.
My favourite cat woman, but she was incredibly dense. Going into your boss confidential files that are password protected, reading his diabolical plans and then telling him what you did is not the brightest decision lol 😆
The differences with today filmmaking is vertiginous. We gain technology and lost depth, cinematography, music, creativity. These are the times for superficiality
thats all i could think of watching this...the set design, the filming, the colour grading, all of it is so unique and so well done. today's films are so....blah. The acting/dialogue is a bit blah tho lol
Nostalgia effect. Look up other movies released the same year and you'll find just as much junk as today. Like someone else mentioned, this has more to do with Tim Burton, than the era. Modern day directors, like Denis Villeneuve, still make stuff equalling or better than this level of quality
Has anyone else noticed that the exact same thing that happened in this scene to Selina Kyle from Batman returns was also the exact same thing that happened to Selina Kyle in Gotham where Bruce’s doppelgänger pushed her out of the window then she became Catwoman. I’m feeling so much Deja vu
They honored this scene in Returns. They also honored the Catwoman claw circle to open the glass in the last episode of Gotham, which was from Batman the Animated Series. Catwoman did that in her very first episode on that show. The writers of Gotham are in their 30’s like I am. We grew up with this movie and this cartoon.
1:59 Always loved the sincerity of this moment. 2:57 Selina Transforms, Pt. 1 is fantastic. Michelle nails every moment she is on screen. 5:20 She really captures the terror, anger, and trauma that comes with not being able to escape toxic masculinity, bullying, and harassment. The memory of a life she doesn't want to relive and a personhood she doesn't want to revisit. 8:05 One of her many iconic lines.
and the robot voice from the marketing call mentioned "your boss" triggered her into the breakdown, also carried a disturbing & harassing personal connection involving her loneliness & lack of success in finding a male romantic partner, thrusted her into insanity. not quite a broken heart but an unfulfilled one hankering to be loved by & to love someone special but all she has is a nagging mom, no friends
Selina's rage and transformation really bring me to tears everytime. This is an amazing sequence. It's perfect. And Pfeiffer deserved SO MUCH MORE recognition after this performance.
I love that line and that scene "I don't know about you, Miss Kitty but i feel... so much yummier" with that back song😁 Michelle Pfeiffer is my all time favorite, and the best Catwoman in my opinion!

It was like they were two perfect adversaries made for each other 😁 Equally dangerous and menacing but each in their own way
Her scene of transformation alone deserves a friggin academy award.
Batman Returns actually has 2 Oscar nominations to its name for Best Visual Effects (lost against Death Becomes Her) and Make-Up & Hairstyling (lost against Bram Stoker’s Dracula)
Michelle losing her mind in this scene and going absolutely crazy is something of LEGEND!
Yes, symbolic of her destroying her old self. The same with the leather coat. Took the old and recreated her new self.
Perfect casting. Her eyes and the eyebrows arch are feline-like. She is a great actress. Just, perfect.
I don't even want to imagine the amount of clean-up and repair after each take of this scene.
As a kid in the 90s this was fun going watching at the movie theatre. As an adult now in my 40s wow this movie still holds up but now I see the movie completely differently.. it's very psychological.
I’m 41 too and saw it in theaters at ten and had toys, had the cereal and lunchbox and all.
Did you watch Batman the animated series too?
One of the great scenes of Batman history. And very sad, too.
The scene where she returns back to her home and becomes Catwoman was Oscar-worthy
indeed
Watched this from the perspective of an acting student. I think Michelle Pfeiffer is amazing here. No disrespect to Anne Hathaway, but anyone else think Michelle is better? Just trying to see if my judgment of acting is alright.
Yeah I think Hathaway actually did a great job of portraying the character in Nolan’s universe, they’re kinda completely different characters despite having the same names. But Pfeiffer’s performance in this is criminally underrated, especially at the time. I don’t love everything about this movie but the acting is incredible and she definitely stole the show
Anne Hathaway was horrible
I'm pretty sure Nolan's Catwoman is supposed to be very different and not comparable to Burton's
@@rickygforce4217 I was talking about acting skill, not the characters.
Anne projects zero sexuality or charisma for that role. She's a milk dud compared to Michelle's delicate Belgian chocolate.
This movie does not make me believe in Catwoman, it makes me believe in Selina Kyle.
Makes a suit from jacket and goes to work next day after being pushed put of a high-rise window, what a champ
There were leather pants too.
"Oh, I forget I'm not married" That's why all the cats around, lady.
@FaceAche I mean all the cats she attracted, not the one she owns.
I am Jean Pierre, the Evil Puppet! The only grammatical error there was the missing S. How about u learn to read English 🤩
@@Yehoshua66 I think that's what he meant.. The OP's comment was difficult to decipher in the first place. And his reply explaining it was still technically wrong.
Hahahhah
Me having 9 Cats....😛😄
This scene was so scary and upsetting to me as a kid... now I see how it changed the DC Universe and movie-making in general forever.
I'm SO hyped about The Batman, but Zoé Kravitz has really got a hard task.
This Catwoman is quite unbeatable.
hear her roar
Imo, she's got what it takes, the only thing that could ruin it is the script and directing. For example, Halle Berry made an outstanding Catwoman (at least in my opinion) but I can see how the script and directing really brought down the quality. Though, I love that movie with all my heart lol.
I think I saw this scene like 60 times 🤩 This movie is awesome and no one will ever be a better Catwoman.
I know people love Heath Ledgers performance as Joker. But Michelle Pfeiffer did it first. One of the best movie villain performances in history.
She’s antihero
Fantastic how Celena is revive by the cats in order to be Catwoman... while bruce is transformed by the bats while he is still alive.
Secretary gets murdered by boss-
*becomes professional seamstress*
hmm kinda old comment. she did have a sewing machine lying around, so i guess she is quite proficient with sewing/tailoring.
the weird thing is how she is suddenly have acrobatic skills.
Well yeah isn't that common knowlege? Happens all the time
@@era7928 It's mentioned in the shooting script that she's actually been taking various classes, among which are martial arts.
🤣
Michelle Pfeiffer perfected this role. no one else in the world could have done it
In less than 10 minutes you can make a compelling character into an infinitely more Intriguing one, yet films these days need multiple movies, spinoffs and tie-in's.
The art is on it's last breath.
The acting and everything were mesmerising here. It really unworldly
Danny's score as she transforms is 😢♥️
For me this remains as the best batman movie ever with the best portrayal of Catwoman's character. I love the dark comics theme and yet the season was Christmas. There's magic in this movie every time I watch it.
2:45 I remember the first time I saw this being so shocked at what he does. It was just so unexpected it every way - so cold, evil and sudden!
My favourite cat woman, but she was incredibly dense. Going into your boss confidential files that are password protected, reading his diabolical plans and then telling him what you did is not the brightest decision lol 😆
BEST CATWOMAN PERIODD
The differences with today filmmaking is vertiginous. We gain technology and lost depth, cinematography, music, creativity. These are the times for superficiality
The acting is cringy.
thats all i could think of watching this...the set design, the filming, the colour grading, all of it is so unique and so well done. today's films are so....blah.
The acting/dialogue is a bit blah tho lol
We didn’t, though. You’re just looking in the wrong places. No need to be ostentatious about it.
Nah thats just Tim Burton. He always had his style and nobody even attempted to copy it
Nostalgia effect.
True. I think it’s a reference on purpose-
Yeah. I saw it and I was like "they took this from 'Batman Returns'"
That Was Rip Off
They wanted to honor this scene!
4:00 You can't die now woman, you think my dinner will serve itself??
As a cat lover, I'm envious of having that many cats attending to me.
I like it when the light makes the shadow of her glasses look kinda like cat woman’s mask in the first comic
Ohh, Christopher Walken is here.. I remember his acting in Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow...Tim Burton..Always great, all nice movies.
This is some quality Burton. The lighting is so extreme and the shots so cramped and intimate.
this is the best catwoman in history, and michael keaton the best batman ever.
The best catwoman EVER! Hands down. She’s just perfect.
Yup her and best voice is Adrienne Barbeau
2:55
That relaxed "Ah" always gave me chills.
No wonder Tim Burton was scared of casting Walken 😂😂
1:59 Always loved the sincerity of this moment. 2:57 Selina Transforms, Pt. 1 is fantastic. Michelle nails every moment she is on screen. 5:20 She really captures the terror, anger, and trauma that comes with not being able to escape toxic masculinity, bullying, and harassment. The memory of a life she doesn't want to relive and a personhood she doesn't want to revisit. 8:05 One of her many iconic lines.
Toxic Masculinty?? How old are you 13?
"toxic masculinity" lol
and the robot voice from the marketing call mentioned "your boss" triggered her into the breakdown, also carried a disturbing & harassing personal connection involving her loneliness & lack of success in finding a male romantic partner, thrusted her into insanity. not quite a broken heart but an unfulfilled one hankering to be loved by & to love someone special but all she has is a nagging mom, no friends
The way she sprays the doll house and then destroys it cracks me up every time 😂
Selina's rage and transformation really bring me to tears everytime. This is an amazing sequence. It's perfect. And Pfeiffer deserved SO MUCH MORE recognition after this performance.
I love that line and that scene "I don't know about you, Miss Kitty but i feel... so much yummier" with that back song😁
Michelle Pfeiffer is my all time favorite, and the best Catwoman in my opinion!
Although she acted awkward & quite silly but this scene actually showed the clever side of "Selina". Manage 2 correctly guess the security password by observing stuffs on her surrounding.. 😊
but dont be an idiot and tell your boss that you hacked into his computer. And then dont be an idiot and drone on and on about all of the illegal stuff that you found lol
"I don't know about you Ms. Kitty but I feel so much yummier."
This performance is CLASSIC.
I'm not even a big comic book or movie fan, but I love Batman because most the villans are similar to batman on why they become villans with some depth and reason. This and TMT 1990 were first 2 live action comic book films I saw in theaters.
'How can you be so mean to someone so meaningless' what a beautiful line
Michelle didn't get enough credit for this, it's beautifully acted. I guess this was back before comic book movies were treated seriously. If she was in Nolan's films, she might have won a few awards.
