What You Didn't Know About the HK416 & How To Build Your Own

  • The Heckler & Koch HK416 is an updated, piston-action derivative of the M4 carbine. It's been issued to U.S. Special Forces troops - and yes, it's the rifle used by the Navy Seals who ended the career of Osama bin Laden. Now, you can assemble your own with an HK416 parts kit from Brownells. Broken down from complete German rifles that saw little-to-no use, these kits lack only the lower receiver, barrel, and bolt. The good news is Brownells offers those parts separately, so you can get ALL the components you need to build a complete, semi-auto HK416 rifle. In this video, Paul Levy explains the differences between the HK416 and the M4, and then he shows you how assemble an HK416 kit.

      I have a registered drop in auto sear, it was.....not cheap, so, I can, legally, buy, and convert a HK416 to full auto. Right now, I have 5 gas piston M4s, including a PWS 300 Blackout. Ever seen a 300 Blackout, subsonic, suppressed, fire, in full auto? It is so much freaking fun, that I ASSURE you, the price is ABSOLUTELY worth it!!!!! I have a big lawsuit, in the works, and if it goes through, I may treat myself to a HK416!!!!!! MMMM....... an HK416, in full auto! I MIGHT do the MR556, with the heavier barrel, as a "SAW", with a OSS, zero back pressure suppressor, since, unlike my other gas piston guns, the HK doesn't have an adjustable gas block.

    I have 2 questions for Brownells on this build. First, I did not see any grease used on the receiver extension/barrel nut during assembly. Is there a specific one recommended? Or just the same grease that one would use on any AR assembly? (moly?) I have removed the barrel nut on a factory HK MR556 and there is some kind of grease there. Second, I did not see a Go, No-Go or Field gauge used to check head space after assembly? Is this something that was done off screen or did you skip it? And if so, why? Thanks in advance!

      Standard procedures, including lubrication, should always be used when doing a build. Same with go/no go headspacing. Due to YT regulations and time constraits we often leave things out. This is also why you dont see "How To" builds any longer.

    My 14.5 centurion arms socom barrel has the same notch for its gas block would I be able to use that barrel on a 416? as I would because of how strong the materials are in the barrel it has the MK 40 series 4150 CHF blanks that were made into colt SOCOM barrel but extremely tight gas block for as well as it being indexed and a very thick barrel and speaking of thick the chrome lining is extremely excessive it’s definitely a floral barrel so it’s gonna hopefully last time long time and hopefully get it on some SOT select fire lowers as it deserves but what’s the guy saying for a 416 for the 10.4 and for the 14.5 because if I could swap that barrel in I would one it’s chrome lime is it and has probably over par HK materials are mostly the better but the original barrel blank was meant for a saw type barrel
    I really feel that the systems are gonna be the future of AR platforms The BCG for example is a spring around the firing pin and I believe it has a spring loaded rotating bolt it would be nice to get one of those Miller gas block variance but they just started selling Built uppers and I would buy honestly I would want the 10.4 and a 14.5 both with the MK 1 rail if I wanted to go all out I’d send this shit out to get tanodized but you can use a regular ass lower rather than sending stuff out have that done and then giving it laser etched that’s going to be expensive long process oh week waiting for something stupid like an optic man even drives me nuts are but 1100 bucks for a belt for 16 upper basically add 100 bucks for a muzzle device at 1200 to 1500 with a geissele rail
    If you were going to do one of these build the rails do get hard to find sometimes and they also their triggers are hard to find if you get an HK lower make sure your trigger pin and trigger is the right trigger make sure it’s in HK made by GEISS Don’t just throw an SSAE unless you’re using a different lower which is easier you don’t have to worry about in the magazine issues by the GEN 3P Mag solved that

      Because, you can't sell a barrel, with a pinned flashhider, and still be able to assemble the gas block over it. They would have to sell it, as a complete upper, which they could do, but some people won't want that, because they will want an AUTHENTIC HK barrel.

      @@dougk.5501 I have TONS of experience with the Adams Arms system, and it is 100% reliable, robust, and when installed properly, with a T2 buffer, runs like a Swiss watch(all short stroke, AR, piston systems require a heavier buffer). Now, I've heard great things about the Superlative Arms kit. They bought the design from Syrac Ordinance, and perfected it. Like the Adams, it needs a T2/H2 buffer, and has a 1-piece, milled, bolt carrier. Unlike the Adams, it does not require a mil-spec, or same dimension barrel nut, and will work with any handguard, that it physically fits under. Specifically, for the Geissele fans,it will work with the Geissele handguard. It's adjustable, and solid, but, it is also more expensive than the Adams Arms, basic, system. The Adams Arms works with any handguard, that uses, like i said, a mil-spec, or same dimension barrel nut, so, it will work with the Adams Arms rail, Centurion Arms rail, DD Omega rail, Samson STAR and Evolution rail. Those are all fantastic handguards, and the Samson Evolution, is my favorite handguard on the market, so, if you like that, the Adams may be great for you, and the Syrac may be unnecessary. If you get the basic Adams kit, with the full height gas block, the Samson STAR-Elite, or EVO-EX are great, because they extend around the bottom and sides of the gas block, to give you extra real estate. Sorry about the long comment, but I'm just trying to help you get the most out of your rifle. One last piece of advise, pistol, carbine, and mid-length kits all work FANTASTIC, but rifle length kits are too long, and the oprod flexes, causing short stroking, so, if you want a "rifle" length system, I reccomend an 18" barrel, with amid-length piston kit. Feel free to ask ANY QUESTIONS you may have, bro.

    What is so great about a piston AR? Gas impingement works fine.

    • @joshuabressel1280
      @joshuabressel1280 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It absolutely does, but, gas piston run cleaner, cooler, and more reliably, in very bad conditions. For the average user, who goes to the range, with a 16", semiautomatic, AR, then goes home, and cleans it, DI is fantastic. For someone with a short barreled, suppressed, or, ESPECIALLY, fully automatic, rifle, in austere conditions, or in a protracted gunfight, gas piston is king. All the stories about carrier tilt, and reduced accuracy are from long ago, and, largely, based on the piece of shit, that was the Bushmaster Gas Piston Rifle(a super, El Cheapo, garbage attempt, to capitalize on the craze for gas piston guns, as cheaply made as possible)! GP guns are, also, nearly identical in weight, to a comparable DI rifle, with all things, otherwise, being equal, only weighing 4-5 oz more. So, do you need a gas piston rifle? Maybe not, however, if you want one rifle, in your collection, for "if shit hits the fan", and you need to protect yourself, and your family, with uncertain conditions, and unknown maintainence schedule, you won't go wrong, with a GOOD GP rifle(like any other AR, not all GP rifles are created equal). Though there are other decent brands, I reccomend HK, SIG, POF, PWS, and either an Adams Arms rifle, or an Adams Arms kit, to convert one of your EXISTING rifles, to gas piston. Now, again, it won't turn a shit gun into a stellar performer, but, if you convert a good quality, DI AR, it will VASTLY enhance its reliability, under adverse conditions.

    • @QarthCEO
      @QarthCEO 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@joshuabressel1280 If shit hit the fan, I'd carry a DI AR because I know I can find standard parts for it everywhere. As for reliability, even in the sand box I have never had a problem with DI reliability. I guess that wasn't an extreme enough environment.

    • @joshuabressel1280
      @joshuabressel1280 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@QarthCEO I was in the sandbox too. During a sandstorm, we had guys, breaking down weapons, to clean the dust cakes out of them, but the piston guns had no problem. As for parts, other than the piston rod, and ONE PIECE MILLED bolt carrier(if you break that, chances are, the rest of the rifle has been destroyed, too), all the parts are the same as a standard AR. Also, in many cases, up in the mountains, the rapid temperature drop, from day, to night, would cause lube, like CLP, to become extremely viscous, and cause malfunctions. Like I said, it has greater reliability. I'm sure you took meticulous care of your rifle, but, in protracted firefights, that can be difficult.

      @@QarthCEO ABSOLUTELY, I have several Adams Arms rifles, and they run flawlessly, as long as you do them correctly. First, they require a mil-spec barrel nut, or one with the same dimensions, so, you can either buy an Adams handguard, or, I really love the Samson Evolution handguards. If you prefer a quad rail, the Samson STAR handguard is great, and is very easy to install. Also, you'll want to make sure, that if you use the basic Adams kit, with the railed gas block, instead of the low profile gas block, that you do not install a polymer front sight, like a Magpul MBUS, on the gas block, as it is the one part of the gun, other than the barrel, that gets super hot, and it can warp or melt, so, if you get a free floated handguard, like the Samson Evo, Samson STAR, or Adams, great, put it on that, or, put a metal sight, on the gas block, like a Troy, or, UTG has been making SURPRISINGLY GOOD sights, lately! The other, really big, important thing, is the buffer. Use a standard buffer spring, but, use a H2/T2, heavy buffer! This is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT! The gas piston has a different impulse, than a normal M4, and this ensures propped cycling. If you look, the HK416 actually comes with a proprietary buffer and spring, they use a H1 and heavier spring, but, by using a H2/T2, it lets you also shoot cheap, steel case ammo, with extreme reliability, not just duty ammo! Now, if you are planning to shoot, primarily suppressed, you CAN upgrade that, to a T3 buffer, but it's not 100% neccessary, though, that is dependant on your suppressor. Now, another key thing for reliability, pistol, carbine, and mid-length kits all work FANTASTIC, but, even though they sell them, don't get the rifle kit. Due to metal flexion, the rod can bend, slightly, since it is so long, at that point, causing short stroking issues. I built a rifle length piston gun, with their kit, and I ended up making a change. I realized, for a "rifle" length DMR, in GP, my best bet, was to do a 18" barrel, with a mid-length gas system, and it worked FLAWLESSLY! I used the 20" barrel, on a different project. Ok, last thing, Adams offers 3 different, basically, kits, based on the gas block type. The standard kit is a same plane gas block, with 3 settings, full gas, half gas, for suppressed shooting, and no gas, for use with .22lr conversion kits, and to use subsonic ammo, with a suppressor, as a sort of, straight-pull, bolt action rifle. If you use that, Samson makes fantastic handguards, the Evo-EX, and STAR-Elite, which extend on the sides, and bottom, to give you extra real estate, and handguard coverage, and are REALLY phenomenal. The Evo is also very reasonably priced, at about $140-$170, depending on length. Then the other 2 types, are both low profile, one adjustable, one not. The non adjustable is about $100 cheaper, and, if you NEVER, EVER, plan to put a suppressor, on the rifle, that's fine, though, I think it's worth it, because upgrading, later, is $195. The adjustable version, unlike the standard, adjustable gasblock, has SEVEN settings!!!! This lets you really fine tune the gas, for your rifle/suppressor combo! It has both side wrench flats, and a front screwdriver slot, and I found that the tiny Dremmel wrench tucks PERFECTLY, between a ladder rail cover, and one of the Samson Evolution rail sections! That's a hack I figured out. I have a registered drop in auto sear, so that gas block, let's me perfectly set the gas(full for unsuppressed, 2 clicks for suppressed), to optimally run the gun, suppressed or unsuppressed, in semi or full auto! And, with the low profile gas block, you can use the normal (non-EX, non-Elite) versions of the Adams Arms, Samson Evolution/STAR handguards. Oh, and Centurion Arms also works, as does Daniel Defense Omega, and any other piston compatible handguard, that uses a mil-spec barrel nut, and for the low pro, will extend over the gas block. I believe that's it, brother, lolol. I tried to impart my gas piston wisdom, as best I could, for making a gas piston kit, work optimally. Other than that, follow the instructions, and if you have ANY questions, feel free to reach out to me!

      @@gordy505 It be slightly cheaper by about 500-600 depending. So the base rifle is $2000 range, and first thing you have to do is chop the semi auto thing off the barrel extension. Then you can buy a 416 carre&bolt and that be about 600 right there. Then you can buy a gas block for the 416 which will set you back about 300-400. Then you go put on the new gas block, chop the barrel, and permanently pin&weld the barrel.
      The barrel is stainless steel on the HK 556 but I don't think you'll find a chrome line one. Even the brownelles 416 profile barrel is melonite and bare steal. The actual 416 barrel, if you can find one, will cost you roughly 1500-3000 depending on the condition.

      @@gordy505 Also, don't send your firearms to the IGF guy. He's a fraud. They busted him after getting about 30 complaints from people who say they sent him their firearms, and/or money, then never hearing from him again. The guy's name is Jayson Cotter. Do a google search on him and you'll find that he got arrested. You can do the upgrades yourself using a local gunsmith (if you can find one).

He missed several things, 2 just off the top of my head is no assembly grease on any of the threaded components and over-torquing the muzzle device with no torque wrench. That's a GREAT way to burn out the muzzle end of the barrel prematurely while compromising accuracy.
