    I just quit my job and left the big city of Toronto to move onto 40-acres of Canadian wilderness with a magical river. I am building an off-grid homestead with multiple cabins and structures from the timber on the land. I may have made a huge mistake as doing this at the start of Winter in late November may make general construction difficult if not impossible.
    My first project is a 12' by 16' cabin using the BUTT AND PASS method with raw logs. It will include a sleeping loft and a steel roof. I will not be milling or saddle notching the logs, but chinking in the small gaps that do appear with the butt and pass method with raw logs. This method's main advantage is SPEED.
    To all my viewers and subscribers, STRENGTH AND HONOUR! 🫡🤝⚡️🐺🌲

    You drag those heavy logs around, all you need is three two-foot-long logs, perfectly round, you pick up the long timber you have cut a foot of the ground slide the small log underneath, then pull it to its length, you then rinse and repeat, let the small log do the work for you. As for storage, raise the logs off the ground by using three log supports underneath, which stops them from freezing, then in the spring stops the moisture from getting into the log. Also, flag your Site!!! put coloured flags on poles around your site where trip hazards are, storage and suchlike. I saw the cardboard boxes in the tent, flatten them, then put your cot legs on the cardboard, it will stop cold bridging into the cot frame. Now the weather is bad you need to prep your fire each day in survival mode. You lay out three starting kits for three separate days, so if you are tent bound you are prepped. Small survival trick I learned as an army survival instructor. Find an old tyre, cut a chunk of the rubber, make it a wedge, at the thin end of that light it with a lighter, and let it catch. Then use this to light your stove fire, save fuel, and the rubber will last ages. Also, you need in your tent a crash system, get a box of long matches, open it up, pull out a match place it in the box and shut the drawer on it, so that there is a match presented to use straight away, leave this by the stove. Save your fat from your steak in a tallow jar, also save the fine ash in a metal bucket, (so you can make Lye water in spring). Outside your tent flap, store a shovel jammed into the ground and the handle upright, you will need this in an emergency. You are also the messiest lumber jack I have ever seen, keep the cutoffs, and shaved limbs put into piles. You may need these later. Near your longdrop toilet, I would set up now a compost area, and start putting small limbs and rubbish in there. I have not seen a CO detector in your tent, may be a good investment. Your batteries bring into the tent at night. Right that is enough of me, going to give you one last bonkers tip, when you have a bath in the snow, when you get out, roll in the snow before using a towel, the snow will get rid of the water, making your towel less wet, and pat yourself dry do not rub, pat don't rub, if you rub you will get hypothermia. Another crazy army trick as well, when you go to bed, wash your feet in freezing cold water then immediately get in your sleeping bag and do it up, in two minutes the bag just gets red hot.

      Try building 2 tippe poles stands and hang the tarp over them at a incline to keep the snow off the logs. I agree with the base idea of right angle logs. Also check out rocket mass heater as it's a great way to reduce the amount of wood burn but keep you and your tent warm. It makes better use of the heat and keeps it around longer!

  • @DanB-ei8br
    @DanB-ei8br 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +22

    LOL!! Watching you grab those logs and haul them to the building site gives a new definition to "Tree Hugger". I've spent many winters in the woods as a logger. Sometimes when people start going off on loggers I tell them I'm a tree hugger as well. When they ask how that can be since I'm a logger I tell them "A good logger has to hug to the trees to see which way they lean. A simple tip for actually figuring that out on the tricky ones is to grab your axe by the butt end, blade facing away from you, and let it dangle in front of you and use it as a plumb to see which way it leans.

    Use some of your smaller cut offs as cribbing for your main logs to stay off the ground.
    You can always cover them with pine branches and that will make it easier to clean them up once you’re ready. Keep it going before you hit the winter wall 😂👍

    All those 4ft pieces of logs you cut the trail in could be used as a roller. Next comes stacking them and peeling the bark off. If don't peel the logs they will hold bugs and rot. Get some 3/8ths re-bar to make some dogs to hold the logs, and make a heavy-duty scribe to mark for shallow V-Cut under the logs. Use a Butt and Pass methiod. Use a 6ft length of rope to drag the logs with the bushwacker as a handle. Buy a box of long timber screws to anchore the log walls. Leave the ends of the log about foot long at each corner, cut and trim later. Alternate the logs, Butt,tail,butt tail to keep all sides as even as possible, Level, and use the thicker ones first for the lower part of the walls. Build a sturdy latter about 11 to 12 foot long.

    This is great work man! Just a few advices:
    1. Get timber tongs with a chain instead of a handle, then a pulling harness (I've used ones for pulling weight sleds at the gym) then you'll be able to pull bigger logs by yourself a bit more ergonomically.
    2. Make a big tarp roof over your workplace for snow cover, you can both cover your logs and have a workplace without (more) snow. Fell 4 trees too thin for the cabin, make 2 big bipods lashed togerther with some rope, raise them with a thick rope anchored in the ground, diagonally up to the top of the first bipod, horizontally through the air to the top of the second bipod, then down to the ground to another anchor. Throw the biggest tarp you can find over the middle section and anchor the sides like a tent. I've built 12ft high, 15ft wide, 25ft long outdoor dining halls for camps by my self this way. Just prep the rope and tarp between the bipods before raising them, and use a strong enough tarp for winter winds :)
    3. Get a manual winch or hoist block to get you out of tight spots (pulling stuck logs, raising the bipods mentioned above, pulling trees in the right direction when felling.
    Good luck with your cabin and with Sophie Turner! Will be following this!

    Stack your logs on a few smaller lengths, or even a bed of the limbs, and use 3, 2-3 inch thick lengths to build tripods at each corner with 2 taller tripods in the middle to help with snow clearing, may I also suggest you watch 'my self reliance' (if you don't already) for help with the build

    First off,great job fella,glad to see you living your best life...If I may,I would suggest u build yourself 2 or 3 heavy duty sawhorses.With afew planks spread across them they would also act as a work platform (to do your roof) or a tabletop / workbench. (save your back) Also I say cut more n more firewood for that stove and when you arent cutting more firewood,say too yourself "I should cut more firewood and keep my body temp up at the same time"
    Luke from "The Outdoor Boys" youtube channels got your back if u need winter survival skills upgraded,look him up sometime.

    Stage your logs after you cut them, lean them vertically against a tree, once you have a bunch staged, have your atv bud help. If your deadest on doing it by hand, get an old toboggan the wooden flat ones with a curved front. Lash the log to it, it will scoot along no problem.

    Take your smaller ends of logs and lay them diagonal under your logs. That will keep them off the ground. You could build a frame to hang a 20x20 tarp over your build site. Still will have to clear snow but you can slope it to where it will be on the low side.
    Great videos

    I don’t know what your finances are like but you can get a nice used 250 or 300 ATV to help live logs gravel etc, for as cheap as $500 if you can put some parts on them or $1000-$2000 for something nice, it would save your back, save you time before winter, and later on to help you grind stumps and cleanup the meado from the twiggy growth with a towable bush mower. Just a thought

    • @wildhomestead
      @wildhomestead  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is an excellent idea GOOD SER! In early winter this is a strange time because it’s almost at the end of an ATV’s usability in central Ontario due to snow. Yet the snow is also not deep enough to really run a snowmobile and as far as I can tell snowmobiles aren’t as useful as ATV’s for doing tight quarter log hauling and winching etc. I’ll definitely be getting an ATV but I’m thinking of waiting until spring! Am I thinking right about this?

    • @dfriendly1966
      @dfriendly1966 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      What about getting a tractor instead. A small one might just be the ticket.

    • @johnmasongrossenbacher2299
      @johnmasongrossenbacher2299 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They make snow plows to attatch to the front or back of the atv’s and you can pick up an atv winch to put on it too for like $250 brand new that way you could keep the trail to your car cleared and the build site cleared, also think about building a few wooded log saw horses that way you can pick one end of the log up and set it on the saw horses to save your back from bending over while peeling, if you can get a plow for the atv all you would need to due is clear enough snow to have the atv start on the solid ground and from there you can keep the area cleared enough to make the atv usable all winter. Then when you are setting the peeled love you can build tripods out of logs and mount the winch on it to pick them up and set them you would just need to hookup longer wire to reach the atv for battery power.

    • @JKnight911
      @JKnight911 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m thinking that if you get an ATV sooner than spring it’s going to help you with time! You could use it to remove snow and use it to move the logs. It would save you so much time, I would think. Love your channel! Please keep the videos coming. I know it takes a lot longer to do things when you’re recording and then it takes time to edit as well. But over 12k subs after the 1st video…….people are loving your content! OK, I just finished building a home for my family and so now I'm looking at your adventure with my 10y old son with a passion! (While my wife is sleeping on the couch next to us (no offence) ;-) I do have a suggestion / thought for building your homestead. You can build it 2 ways first the walls and then cutting the windows in, but if you already have the size or even better the windows you build around the window framing and door. This means you can do with shorter timbers which are easier to transport and handle. Also, a suggestion is to cut and directly use the timber because if the moisture in the wood freezes it will make your tools blunt in a heartbeat. Keep up the good work! Greetings from The Netherlands

  • @bobflores
    @bobflores 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Well, I've watch both your videos. When's the next one? That black lab experience was kind of odd. Tarps to cover logs and the logs raised off the ground on cribbing. The job site I think you're going to have to tarp and uncover the area you're working on. You should invest in a snow machine or four-wheeler with snow chains to help drag the logs around and to haul supplies between your car and the camp site. You might try a tow strap to drag the logs now that the ground is frozen and covered with snow. Also some kind of sleds to put under the logs to help drag them around might help. Keep the videos coming. Thanks.

    Nice hack for making the tree fall in the direction you want : On the opposite side of the direction of fall, make a downward cut of about 45° angle. When your chainsaw is 3/4 of the way through the tree, hammer, some wedges where you started your cut. Cut some more, And drive your wedges deeper. The tree will fall exactly where you want.

    Nice take on TH-cam videos :)
    Make a small workspace in the forest near your build, with a Tarp roof and then make some work benches of the left over wood you have already chopped down, then you can also get your logs of the ground 🤩
    And you can have work height table for the logs.
    Dragging the logs, maybe use a sledge or get an Atv 🤩
