    I just quit my job and left the big city of Toronto to move onto 40-acres of Canadian wilderness with a magical river. I am building an off-grid homestead with multiple cabins and structures from the timber on the land. I may have made a huge mistake as doing this at the start of Winter in late November may make general construction difficult if not impossible.
    My first project is a 12' by 16' cabin using the BUTT AND PASS method with raw logs. It will include a sleeping loft and a steel roof. I will not be milling or saddle notching the logs, but chinking in the small gaps that do appear with the butt and pass method with raw logs. This method's main advantage is SPEED.
    To all my viewers and subscribers, STRENGTH AND HONOUR! 🫡🤝⚡️🐺🌲

      Lmao I think the reason I e become obsessed with these videos and others like it may be because of my own belated midlife crisis. I don’t have the means to allow mine take the reigns in the same way he has but I have no doubt that if I did, I’d be doing the exact same thing only with my head much further up my own ass....

      What they like to call a man's midlife crisis is when a man wakes up and decides to do what actually makes him happy. To others it might seem like a crisis to the man himself there is only what he should have been doing all along

    It hurts my eyes looking at your sawhorses. Some tips: predrill the hole in the piece that the screw goes throug, use countersink to prevent splitting, if youre using 4mm screws drill the hole 3.5mm, that will help to secure two piecies together without a gap. Make sure you are using the correct bit(PZ2 bit with PZ2 scews etc). Id suggest you use torx bit, its less prone to skipping. Also use the slower gear that will help with skipping aswell. You should definitely add some crossbraces to the legs since youre planning to put them under heavy logs.

    Hey nice to see you listening to us, well here goes, well done on clearing the camp, much less frustrating for you and less chance of hurting yourself. The tarp rope the yellow one is designed to have that flex/slack, what you really need is an old abseil rope with a kern and mantle design, old abseil ropes have had the factor and slack pulled out of them, and they are really cheap. The tarp and pegs issue, there is a simple hack, just roll a long heavy log round the tarp edge, keep the shavings of the trees, and dry them out, great fire lighters for the future. Coffee is a diuretic making you pee more, just watch your are hydrated. The saw horse look great well done, put a bracing post on the bottom part of the frame, stops em wobbling apart. Do not be tempted to melt snow on a pot in the cabin, you will burn the bottom out of your pot. I noticed you have a great piece of metal grille, I would be tempted to have a day fire, with the grill over the top, an old crock pot, and you can make a stew with the steak, and some vegetables. Saw the berries I cringed when the bears come out of hibernation do not eat them near your home, bears love em, and can smell em a mile off, even old packets be wary. Saw the rope tensioner, great idea, you could have made what is known as a windlass using some wood, if you find the wire is still slacking, a couple of A Frames near the end can make it tawt. It looks beautiful in the snow. Well done on clearing your vents on the tent, as carbon monoxide build up is a bit dodgy, (where is your alarm??). I mentioned the windlass earlier, if you use one of them an a frame you can make what is known as a cruck crane to help lift your logs onto your build. Great work, keep it up, you are mad as a box of frogs, but you make me want to watch more.

  • @juneaufabrellos
    @juneaufabrellos 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +24

    A suggestion for the tarp, use good quality bungee cords attached to the tarp and stake them to the ground. They have to be somewhat taut at all the bungee cord point but still have room to stretch so when the wind blows the tarp can move and flex and then stretch back into place. Keep up the good work!

    The "bow" in your logs is called the crown. Crowing logs properly on your wall is an important part of the build. You essentially just want to make sure your logs are crowned out (as apposed to up, down, or in). But a little bit of research on crowning logs would probably be really helpful for your build!

    I have a friend who has quite a boat collection along with rafts, canoes and kayaks.
    I’m huge into paleontology and so my friend gave me this set of wheels connected by a harness that is supposed to hold the e d of a kayak or canoe so you can drag it to the creek or river through the woods. He gave it to me to help with hauling bone blocks out of excavation sites.
    I have 200+ acres in the Ozark Mountains. I have been dragging logs like you, the hard way, but my next trip to my land I plan to take the canoe rig to put logs on to drag around. Moving logs by myself takes a lot more strength than I have, especially once they get 8 inches in diameter and up.

    I didn’t see you putting anything to secure the logs to the cement blocks. Also, building a platform to put your tent up would've been better than sleeping on an uneven frozen ground. I was wondering if you are going to have someone else to help you build the cain. Without any help, how are you going to lift the higher logs when the time comes. Dear heart, you sure are a special, funny, a bit crazy and hard worker. Of course I'm going to keep watching your videos. I like them. Take care.

    You need a ski, like an old snowmobile ski that you can attach to the far end of your logs, so when you are pulling them through the snow it's not digging in and so much work. Also you need to look up mechanical advantages with pulleys for pulling logs up your hill so you don't get hurt. You need like a 4:1 mechanical advantage system for ease with your logs

    build yourself some tripods out of some 12 -15 foot logs, place them on either side of the ridge line and use them as the anchor points for the corners of the tarp, ideally, a heavy duty oiled canvas type tarp is best, they are extremely heavy but will last. With the ridge line higher than the corners the snow should slough off with assistance from below. The best line for tying that lashing would be have a roll of 1/4 inch manilla rope. You can also use tripods to lift the ridge line higher if you want to give it a steeper peak, or on the outer edges run a 3 inch pole from tripod to tripod then draping the tarp over it, giving you essentially a roof line.
    the trick to cowboy coffee is to premeasure the amount of water per cup of coffee going into your pot, so 8-9 oz of water per cup, then put it on the stove, bring it to a boil. the closer to the exhaust the hotter the temp. once its boiling take it off, add two heaping tablespoons of grounds per cup of coffee, stir, put it back on the stove for about a minute to simmer, remove and let it stir again, sit for about 4-5 minutes stirring every once or twice. then slowly add a little bit of cold water, this makes the grounds that are floaters sink to the bottom. coarse grind works best. the other way is to put the grinds in a sock or stocking and drop them in the pot, like a home made bag. I use an enameled percolating coffee pot nowadays, i set it on a swedish firelog or small campfire and will make a large pot for the entire day. The pour over is great, but it's like a treat, only for special times hahaha! im enjoying following your content. Good luck!

    What I like most, is that you're not a pro/seasoned bushcraft/carpenter, builder. Seems you just learned a lot by watching others, cultivated some skills before coming out, but most of this is your first time? Well, it's either that or you're a 'good actor' pretending that it is. As a fellow Torontonian, that also wants to get out and fast, I appreciate this content very much. EP4 here I come.

    So I am totally bought in now. I watched your first episode, then your latest one then came back to see all of them. I have embraced the dorkyness of your style. But, what I love the most, is watching you learn. You have already gained a college education worth of knowledge and more on this project. Learning involves being vulnerable and showing that you do know things. We all start where we are, and progress forward from there. Don't let any of the haters get you down. I see your skills and knowledge growing with each episode. You are learning in the best, most immersive way that a person can. Keep on rocking it brother!
