Dave (the 36-year-old with the impressive beard) was raised almost completely sheltered from pop culture by his strict military family. He was homeschooled his entire life until he entered college. He legitimately has very little knowledge of music and bands from before 2000.
John (the guy in the dark on the right) has been a MUSIC LOVER since he was born in the 1960's. Problem is, he rarely knows or fully grasps the lyrics. Dave (on the left), on the other hand, has never heard or rarely overheard the music John chooses to play for him, but tends to take lyrics literally, sometimes to unexpected ends.
John remains in the dark both as a wry play on the situation but also because of legal issues causing his attorney to recommend maintaining a low profile.
We did not write nor do we own the Copyright for the song used in this Educational Video. This is a real, honest reaction to a song Dave have never consciously heard before and/or listened to with intent. Any "facts" offered by John "Doh" are based more on his remembrances than on any actual research. Please feel free to correct him. He loves it.

I love that Wakeman quote. The other one I love is when he said, about Jon Anderson, "He's the only person I know who's trying to save this planet while living on another one."

Ladies and gentlemen YES the greatest show on earth. The only thing missing is Squire playing the Harmonica. You MUST NOT STOP CTTE. With Yes always remember the words usually are another instrument. But if you go with the Divine you'll get there.

Gargamel wanted to capture the Smurfs because they could be boiled down into gold, or something like that. Flashbacks to childhood Saturdays.
Also, fun fact: Joss Whedon named his production company, Mutant Enemy, after a line in this song.

Lyrics (and their interpretation) are very subjective. Open to multiple meanings. I think this is about contacting the higher self through meditation.
And you and I climb crossing the shapes of the morning
And you and I reach over the sun for the river
And you and I climb clearer toward the movement
And you and I called over valleys of endless seas

I am totally becoming a fan of this channel. I agree 100% that this is about humanity, but again with Jon Anderson writting songs for phonetical aligment to the music, everyone can interpret the lyrics different, one thing is for sure Anderson's lyrics talk to your heart. I first listened to this song when I was 12 years old ( 1972) , i loved the music, loved the voice but I did not speak english then so I thought it was a love song. Later on in life when I learned English when I was about 20 years old I still thought it was a love song, but I thought it was a couple making love and realizing they had conception...and how they had become one by starting a new life... All complete in the sight of seeds of life with you..... then I thought the rest of the song was about how their creating was going to navigate life, politics, love, the environment etc. Again every person can decide what this song means one thing we all know: It is a masterpiece of Yes music. Btw Close to the edge to me is the perfect album, and probably the best example of progressive music.

Dave, Yes Lyrics were made for Your Mindset. The Metaphors evoke thoughts of a Time when Humans are more aware, and enlightened. The three songs on this album all speak
of the journey of Mankind from division, to reconciliation. Hearing CTTE first does set up the mind for this song. Love, Love, Love Siberian Khatru. JD, Yessongs "Starship Trooper"
and, "Yours Is No Disgrace", and "Siberian Khatru" just to ensure Dave isn't missing out on the thunder of those versions. Dave I also like to Listen to this song when it's raining,
no one else has ever mentioned listening to this in the rain. Wow, what a synchronicity.

FFS. Let’s just get to CTTE and be done with it. And I’ll advise now, do not stop CTTE at all. Just wait til the movements are completed. That is the only way to grasp the scope of its magnitude.

I love the pedal steel work by Steve Howe in this song. Yes called this song informally The Protest Song, maybe it is about the futility of war (remember, this is 1972) and politics as we lead our lives.

Sometimes, trying to parse Jon Anderson lyrics is just a silly waste of time. He has stated that sometimes, it is a matter of what words sound right and nothing to do with meaning. Rick Wakeman also pointed out that NASA is wasting billions trying to get to Mars - they should just ask Jon since he's already been there. Wakeman is a master comedian in addition to keyboard skills.

Jon Anderson used his voice to make music. That's all he intended. Many have tried to understand his lyrics, but since he didn't understand them himself, that's wasted effort.

I think the key to understanding the lyrics to And You And I (to the extent that that's possible) is understanding that "You" is God, for the most part, but later on it segues into a double-entendre where "you" becomes "all of ya'll out there."

    • @reliantncc1864

YES loses to RUSH because of lyrics. As musicians they are quite creative and better than RUSH but just below Floyd. YES didn't care as much if their lyrics made sense and considered the vocals to be another instrument. IMHO

    • @LiteralistReactions
      @LiteralistReactions  ปีที่แล้ว +2

OK, but for a person like me, (God help you), lyrics play second fiddle to the fiddles. Also, I like poetry and movies that require 3 viewings before you see half the "stuff." So, YES is my main musical squeeze. - JD

@@LiteralistReactions Fair enough. None of my favorite bands "borrowed" music from Blues and Jazz musicians as did Zepplin. My personal Mount Rockmore would include RUSH, YES, The Who and Floyd.

@@LiteralistReactions Since you're a fan of poetry, you might be familiar with modernist poet Wallace Stevens. I'm not sure if Jon Anderson was familiar with Steven's work, but if you read his _Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird,_ it might give you some insight into what Jon was trying to do with his lyrics. Keep in mind, I'm speaking of Jon Anderson from Yes here, not Jon Anderson the poet, who was most certainly familiar with Stevens.
