To the untrained ear most people will think that Steve Howe is just another really good rock guitarist. But to anyone who's been playing guitar for more than a day, they know. He is truly one of the greatest guitarists of all time.

yep, his guitars are a truly challenge to play, not only about getting the notes right, hard enough already, but also the flawless tones and expression. not for 'kids'...

Steve Howe, in this era, won Guitar magazine’s Guitarist of the Year 5 years in a row. They retired him from it so others could win. He became their first alumni. Steve Howe was crazy complicated, beautifully melodic, but could also rock hard. Eventually get to Machine Messiah from the Drama album to hear him get metal. Heart of the Sunrise also shows off his rock chops. And his jazz chops are on display throughout the Relayer album. Nobody has his versatility at the time.

Steve Howe's use of the Fender steel was one the ways they achieved those organic natural(whale) sounds. Wakeman out of all the synth players was constantly tuning his moog in time to get warmest sound ever. And You and I can see how beautifully and serenely this band can achieve musical 🎼 perfection.

those analogue synths were bastards , you would tune it and when you got to the gig if it was warmer or colder you had to wait for it to warm up then tune it again then in the break you would fix all the bits that had gotten too hot and drifted out of tune
      all hail the VST!!!
also they were heavy AND fragile ... lets gently lift this half ton wardrobe full of nitro glycerine up 3 flights of stairs ..yay !

I could swear I hear a banjo in this song. In one particlar section. And yes....Howe plays that, mandolin, sitar, classical guitar, and he sings backup. And writes; a lot of those motifs in this song are his.

Quite possibly the most beautiful "piece of music" in Rock. The whole album is a masterpiece. And they could do it ALL live, including the vocals. 5 of the most badass, virtuoso musos who ever lived -- in one band. We'll never see anything like it again.

  • @JonQuist

When Yes was playing this there was nobody that could pull off a cover of anything on this album. But now there are very talented groups that can do excellent jobs of recreating much of the sound. But then you need to consider 3 things. First, back when this was made music technology, and synth technology in particular was nowhere near what it is today. Second, nobody had done music like this, so it wasn’t like they grew up listening to prog rock for 10-20 years and decided to give it a try. And lastly, playing it takes serious talent…. But composing it!That is absolutely next, next level. Given enough time many good musicians can learn to play it -- but it’s 1 in billions that could possibly compose it.

I couldn't remember if you had reacted to Close To The Edge, so I went through your vids & was delighted to see that you haven't listened to it yet. Something to look forward to. As others have probably told you, Close To The Edge is held by probably the majority of Progressive Rock fans as the Greatest Progressive Rock composition _ever._ As you've noticed, YES were masters of *complexity.* They packed so much into their masterpieces, repeated listenings are a absolute must. Probably their best collective talent, along with sound engineer Eddy Offord, was their attention to perfecting the mix, which will be tremendously apparent to you *_if you listen to the studio version_* & not one of the live vids out there. To put it simply, Close To The Edge was one of the most *ambitious* musical projects ever undertaken by a band *_and they nailed it._* So enjoying your reactions to YES' Masterpieces...

    • @JonQuist
      @JonQuist ปีที่แล้ว +1

I agree that you should listen to the studio version first. But I wouldn’t say the live performances can’t be appreciated. I always wished Chris Squire’s base riff at the end of the middle section on the Yes Songs version was in the studio version. At the same time, I wish the synth transition in the same spot on the live performance was as powerful as the studio version. There is always something one picks up listening to same pieces multiple times, and various versions. It’s all good, really.

  • @leoscone4036
    @leoscone4036 ปีที่แล้ว +15

That bass. Chris Squire. Absolute legend, and a model for now multiple generations of bass players. RIP. Saddest death of a musician I've ever experienced. There are bass players more technically apt, faster, more flashy, but none will ever match Squire. He did it first, they learned after.
This is one of the prettiest songs Steve Howe did with YES, and that's saying a lot, because I could immediately name a half-dozen other songs I feel the same about. How does one choose? Howe and Squire were very attuned.
Jon Anderson's voice has been a beautiful thing for decades. It is slightly faded now, but he still performs and other than some range it is as beautiful as ever.
Anderson was so well backed vocally by Squire and Howe. Squire in particular worked so well with Anderson.
And be it Bill Bruford or Alan White, the connection between bass and drums in their music is phenomenal.
Then, ah yes, the wizardry of Rick Wakeman. It was the combination of inspired musicians and new technology that birthed prog-rock. And folk like Wakeman and Keith Emerson, with their stacks and stacks of keyboards on stage, are Godfathers of Prog.
I was introduced to YES when I was about thirteen. And Pink Floyd, Genesis, Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Frank Zappa, Led Zeppelin, and so much more. 1973 I think it was.
Emerson Lake and Palmer's Tarkus is what did it to me.
So. FIFTY years later I hope you understand what a joy it is to see yet another generation discover this brilliant music, already a HALF CENTURY old.
Folk will STILL be discovering this music when it is a century old. So glad you get to be part of that.
    Blessings.

Steve Howe is a world class chet atkins finger picker on acoustic guitar. When all the other electric guitar players were listening to the black american blues guys, Howe was listening to the guys who preceeded them, the original rock a billy players from the early 50s. He was also influenced by classical and flamingo. Howe knew his way around the fretboard like no other. With Squires style and sound on bass, he didn't need to rely on distortion and a lot of power chords. When you listen to close to the edge, look for all the little amazing subtle licks Howe is laying down. He's one of the few rock guitarists that didn't feel the need to be the star of every song. He didn't mind playing a complimentary role in the compositions while it was Squire using the effects to give the bass the nasty, growling sound. But, when Howe wanted to get down and dirty he could...listen to yours is no disgrace from the live album Yessongs. He blows the roof off the building during his solo.

The reason that harmonic tuning is in there is because Eddie Offord already had the tape rolling. That's why you hear the "Ok" as well. They just decided to leave it as the intro to the track because it sounded so cool. I believe Wakeman added the sustained organ chords after as an overdub.
Anyway, this song is just pure awesomeness, and it is absolutely magical in concert. So emotive!

    • @frankhoulihanfh4972

If you listen very hard, very close, with those headphones on, the first thing you hear is Eddie Offord saying, “We’re running now.” And Steve Howe says “Okay.” What follows may be the best part of the song, quietly, as Steve plays those harmonic runs. So beautiful. One of the great songs, ever. As a teen I vowed I would sing this to my wife when I was older, and I have. I did. I also waltzed her through the kitchen to Awaken, spontaneously. She’s gone now, passed to the next realm in June 2020. But, because of Yes, I have and will always have these memories. Until we meet again. ❤️

The song went right through the roof of the Garden, up into the sky, presumably all the way into heaven. Never saw anything like it. They were immense, massively commanding. If you listen closely at the beginning, the engineer (Eddie Offord) says "it's running now" and Steve says "OK" and starts playing.
As a note to the Yes fans, check out the Steven Wilson remixes. He does a serious remix, bringing up things that are buried in the released mix. It actually gave me some WTF!? moments. They can be different, and he admits (very politely) he is doing exactly what *he* wants, and if you like it: great, otherwise there's always the originals. In that way, he's like Yes in that they did what they liked best and you could come along for the ride or not.
Either way, they are very interesting and well worth a listen, sometimes better, sometimes not so much. IMO of course.
Sometimes I'm in the mood for one, sometimes the other.
One of my fave lines by Jon:
The preacher trained in all to lose his name,
The teacher asking to be shown the same.

All 5 of the Band are genius, with their vocals and instruments. And Rick Wakeman certainly creates a Orchestra with his Keyboards. ‘And You And I’ is made up of 4 ‘Movements’. This is an excellent song for sure. Steve Howe's guitars are unreal. Many of the counterpoint and harmonic lines that sound as though they might be keyboards are actually Howe using distortion and a Leslie speaker system to give it an otherworldly phase. And then there is the pedal steel guitar! I'll be interested to hear (or see) your reaction to live footage of the band. The 1973 live album (and film) Yessongs has a great version of the entire Close To The Edge album plus tracks from their previous two albums as well. The sound quality isn't great, but the energy and masterful performances are stunning. Another live album along with film is "Songs from Tsongas," recorded much later in the band's career, and the version of And You And I is one of the best. ...and Chris Squire, the bassist even plays harmonica. Yeah. They're that good.

In some ways Yes agreed since when they toured this album they led with "Siberian Khatru" and played the title track last. But this song should answer any questions about why Yes replaced Tony Kaye with Rick Wakeman, who later described "And You And I" as a "mini-quintet-sonata, and everything our fans loved and everything the critics hated about us." 😀
Also, I see some comments below saying Steve Howe used a pedal steel when he recorded this, although I've read interviews where he said that it was all done on a lap steel, which he obviously realized wasn't suitable for live work which is why he bought the pedal steel when Yes next traveled to the states.
Anyways, I think your small nitpick about the repetition of the acoustic intro is reasonable. I think the reason they brought it back was because it nicely set up the folky acoustic section that followed. As arrangers, Yes (Jon Anderson, especially) usually followed the classical model of stating, developing, and repeating themes across a longer piece of music, so they'd often re-use something already heard rather than come up with another new bit of music when you're already halfway through a longer song. If you decide to continue your Yes journey with their next work after this you'll get plenty of chances to explore this on Tales from Topographic Oceans! 😄

Amazing song! When I listen to And You And I my chest feels like it's swelling up with love! The odd noises you were talking about is Steve Howe on slide guitar. Making those kind of chirpy sounds. AWESOME!!!! What a great album!

Most of the seventies Yes makes me smile and feel happy. Seems to be working on TMJ too. The difference for me between them and the other progressive bands of the day.

You use some of the same descriptions that I use for Yes songs: epic, majestic, dramatic. I've always enjoyed live versions of this song more than the studio verison (even more majestic, in my opinion). Cheers!

My favorite song, of my favorite album. Steve Howe is playing a pedal steel guitar during the soaring middle bit. The lyrics of this song have an associative magic that's unequaled in any other Yes song IMHO.

Great comments! Especially upon first listen you picked up quite a bit of the music. After Close to the Edge, Relayer is probably their second most complicated music wise. Different, but amazing too. Then there's Tales from Topographic Oceans if you dare

Steve Howe on electric guitar : listen to Sound Chaser, this will blow your mind. For me the most agressive guitar solo ever. As for And YouAnd I, we played a part of it on my wedding, 40 years ago, and it works still today.

Hi...great channel and your reactions are excellent...you're starting to discover just how outstanding and important YES have been to music over the last 50+ years ...no other band like them and still going (if sadly not with Jon, Rick & Bill). Please now do Close To The Edge to discover arguably one of the best musical pieces ever written, then you MUST do Awaken straight after (potentially the most moving song ever written)...please don't go to any other YES track until that's been reacted to...the one to then follow Awaken can really only be Gates of Delirium from the album Relayer. Enjoy.

Was it popular ? Hard to imagine nowadays, but this album was on heavy rotation on rock radio back then - all three songs, even the title track at 18 minutes. It went to #3 on Billboard and was certified platinum for sales of over a million copies. Even more surprising: the same year, Jethro Tull spent three weeks at #1 with a 43 minutes prog-rock epic, Thick as a Brick, which you may eventually get to, if you go on your prog journey.
