I’ve already graduated undergrad. I’m 30. I honestly can’t think of a career more perfect for me than becoming a dietitian. It requires going back to school and starting much later than my counterparts. But this video has both overwhelmed me and given me hope. I can do this. I will do this.

I’m right with you girl. I’m 34, have 2 undergrads (BA and Teachers College). After waiting tables and working as a writing teacher, I am NOW looking into how to become a registered dietician! Gosh…I have a lot of regret about my initial career choices. But also, screw regret. Honestly, I had no idea what I wanted to do CAREER-wise for a long, long time. Teaching was SO emotionally draining, working with students who don’t respect you and aren’t even motivated to begin with, plus I had zero life- but working in restaurants made me realize how much I loved food, healthy eating, and serving the public.
Don’t fret too much. It’s better to be happy doing what you love than slugging it out in a field you no longer identify with.
You got this. Here for you if you need.

@@saradarv1161 I'm in a somewhat similar situation as you- have an undergraduate degree and an AS but couldn't quite find the right working situation for myself (long, demanding hours + bad pay = not worth the stress). As someone in their early 30s, it can be daunting to think about starting over but you have to think about what the rest of your life could be and say screw it, no time like the present! Wishing you and all the other 30 something women who are starting over the best of luck and am always happy to chat if you're interested.

GIRL!!!! You are the best. I have been a registered dietitian for longer than I care to think about. You hit the nail on the head with this vlog. I am retired now and still will NOT let my RD go. I burned out on the whole thing several years ago but so much work (blood sweat and tears for real) goes into getting your RD and keeping your RD that I think I will still have it when I am 90. And yes yes yes to the friends you make as an intern and even as you progress in your career. We all share in the struggle and it makes for such a strong bond. Thanks for doing this.

I am a dietetics student, and I have to say that you have been a major inspiration to me as I was starting up. I love how straightforward you are with presenting research and working with people’s individual needs. I can’t imagine how scary it must have been to just go for the blogging career! This video came at a great time, I will be reaching out to you about internships in the future!

God can I related to the early 20s crisis. I'm 30 now, but my early 20s were such a shock for me. I had almost an opposite experience to you. I started off in astrophysics/math at university and realized that was not at all what I wanted. 10 years later I'm realizing my passions are psychology, public health, and nutrition. Your 20s are such a strange time where everything you think you know about the real world gets turned upside down and you grow and change so drastically.

Abbey, thank you for this video. I had my 20s crisis at the age of 29!! A couple years ago and I was in Fashion Merchandising and Retail Operations at a very well known French high fashion house. I decided to leave the job and pursue a career in dietetics and one of my nutrition professors actually had one of your videos in our courses- the one where you talk about Canada's 2019 New Food Guide. Instantly, I fell in love with you and have been following you video by video since. It is so much work- the chemistry, biology, all of the labs, all of my math that goes into this and then all of the experience that we need- I am now a dietary aide! working through... so yes, I can confirm that it is a lot of work and it is absolutely not like all of the RHNs out there. Oh boy, I can't even get started when people consider it the same thing!
Anyway, I love you so much, love your content. You're so so inspiring, words cannot express.

I am 47 and just about to start studying Nutrition Science! I have been passionate about food my entire adult life but have been busy raising my family so it was more of an interest. Then around 7 years ago I got sick with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and was sick for 3 years, it was nutrition that helped get me well again and ever since then I have been even more obsessed with nutrition and how our bodies respond to food and how we can use it to heal. I am likely to be one of the oldest university students on my course but I shall give it everything I have! Thank you for this great advice, the process may be a little bit different here in Australia but it was still so helpful.

I can completely relate to your life especially when you have a love for arts. I had a love for arts in fine arts, painting, drawing, so i got into the interior design program but a couple of years later i burned out of interior design, realizing that I don't see myself being a future designer. Its only a year left until i am a graduate student. I know its such a waste, I should finish it but i keep failing on my design subjects. I had a talk with my parents about it and wanting to shift, they're okay with it and they agree. THey noticed that i am not that passionate in the design course. I am so happy that my parents are supportive in my change of course. I took nutrition and dietetics in out medical profession program. Studying the sciences was like a thrill for me, I am learning and enjoying more in my course right now. Today I am the president and the representative of the 1st year Nutrition. I cannot wait to learn and of course be a future dietician

This video completely resonated with me. I just completed my Master's in Nutrition including internship (I was fortunate enough to find a program that included the internship), still need to take the RD exam. I also have a background in the arts (MFA in Acting) and though I am passionate about nutrition, my internship made it clear to me that I don't want a clinical job. Made a few TH-cam videos (watched only by my mom, I'm pretty sure) while in school and want to find more ways to communicate what I've learned to people who just want to lead healthier lives. I've really enjoyed finding other RDs who have turned their skill of sharing knowledge through an entertainment format into a career. Thanks for telling your story!

Found this video after really struggling with my path, and it has helped me so much with jumping back into figuring out how to become a RD. I just graduated my undergrad with a degree that I planned for PA school. All the requirements of the science courses completed, and boom I found an interest in dietetics. Safe to say I am completely on my own with this one. My school does not offer any form of nutrition courses. Right now I am completing a masters of education with an emphasis on sports management, and I am also a Graduate Assistant coach for my cheer team while I figure out what is next step in this career. Hey Abbey I know how you feel about not getting into an internship. I didn't get into mine when I applied in my senior year of undergrad and it was heartbreaking. The best thing for me is I was able to work as a dietetic technician (DTR) and gain a little experience because after school I just wanted to start working right away. In the long run it was beneficial to me because I could add it to my resume. I have now been accepted into my masters program in nutrition and human performance program which also integrates my dietetic internship! For all of you out there who are pursuing a career in dietetics just know these things don't happen easily but with hard work and in time you can make it happen!

Ohhh my gosh this is so crazily relatable! I dropped all science subjects in Year 11/12 too because I was certain I was going to be a journalist and chose the arty subjects! After two years of studying journalism at University with one year left, it's like a part of me completely changed and I was eager to do nutrition and dietetics because I looked back and realised all of my assessment pieces I chose to write about were all food/health related and I found myself thinking more about that than journalism. It's so funny how you said it's like you never used the left side of your brain because that's exactly what I'm feeling now! I'm a musical theatre kid through and through and have always had my mind set on theatre for as long as I can remember. I dedicated all my free time to dance, music and drama, nothing maths or science based was ever going to be my thing. But when I turned 19 I realised that maybe MT wasn't for me anymore, it was like losing the biggest part of myself. I'm now 21 and have been exploring different pathways whilst working as a waitress and I feel like I'm stuck in a huge cycle of not knowing what I'm doing, or what I want to do. Recently I started getting into nutrition, yoga and health and I feel like I've finally found something that I'm as passionate about as I was with theatre. I'm having the same issue that you had with the Biology and Chemistry qualifications, but hearing you speak about how you changed your career path around and became so successful gives me hope for my future, and I can't thank you enough! hi abbey! i just want to say that u give me confidence to try out this path for myself. im 20 years old and just filed a leave of absence from my university to rethink what i want to pursue in life. currently in ED recovery, im also finding an interest in dietetics and helping others through nutrition, but i came from a humanities-focused background so im quite scared of the jump to the heavy science of it all. i still have time during my leave to research more about n&d and if it's the right choice for me, but your story really gives me hope

I LOVE this video! Really does help others understand the tenacity and hard work it took you to get to this place. It's the same when someone asks me what it took to become a Speech Pathologist. So many times we realize that others simply do not understand the unbelievable commitment it takes to do what you feel you were meant to do in this life. Many blessings 💖 and keep these videos coming. We have such a common personality. It makes me smile and laugh at the true transparent honesty. I picture this is how I must sound to others as well. 🤣

I can relate to you with being an artist myself and having had no interest in science when I was younger.
I think a big reason was because I struggled with mathematics, and had so much creativity that I had room for little else.
I had a former boss tell me, when I was barely 21, that I was a person made of shapes and colors, and with the office job I had then, I was trying to force myself to exist in a world of black & white and numbers. And she was so right!
I still see myself as a shapes & colors type, but in the last 5+ years, my love for science has exploded!!!!
I’ve become a lot more scientifically minded, and I want to know how things work- I want to know every little detail. I want concrete proof.
I still struggle with numbers, and I’ll always be an artist, but I’ve come to appreciate science and the truth we find in it. 💚

Fyi, all programs in Quebec also include the internship placement as part of the program. It's also designed to break up the internship in different levels and sites in order to get the students to get a good handle on the different areas of practice. Another huge plus is that there is no competency exam to pass once you have your diploma. The only thing stopping you from joining the order is the fee and perhaps a French competency test if the person is from our of province and wants to practice in Quebec. However, RDs who want to practice elsewhere in Canada but we're schooled in QC can get a temporary license from the order and switch to another order without doing the Canada wide exam (as far as I know).

I also struggle a lot with nutrition and being a mom I have to make sure my kids are eating the correct things. Long story short me and husband were talking about my sister who is a psychologist and how I wish I would have finished school. So he said go for it. Have you heard of the Columbia University Center for Eating Disorders? It's a great program ran by the school. They have outpatient treatment as well as inpatient. The crazy part is that it is a state funded program and it doesn't cost the patients anything. You can even participate in research studies and be compensated monetarily for your time and input. The program can give people who don't want to go bankrupt a chance at recovery.

I LOVE watching your videos and the content you provide. I am currently studying Dietetics. Going into my senior year, I am getting nervous about the internship process. This video helped clarify some things! So, thank you!
Also, I recently discovered intuitive eating and I am loving the process so far. I have so much more freedom around food. I already eat as healthy as I can, consuming mostly whole foods. I'm finding it challenging to find a balance with intuitive eating while resistance training and aiming to build more lean muscle. I love my body, I do, its just that I also love feeling strong and would like to define my muscles! I want to stay away from counting macros because I have had an obsessive mindset in the past with that! So, if you have any good tips on how to incorporate intuitive eating while striving for muscle gain, that would be amazing! Thanks!!

Hi Abbey! I was wondering if you could make a video on gaining weight for people who struggling with weight gain/eating more? I have a super fast metabolism and have been underweight my whole life (my mom was also this way when she was growing up). I always eat 3 meals a day but my issue is I get full so easily.
I know this issue probably isn’t talked about much, because usually people want to lose weight, not gain it. I’m 22 and have always been just under 100 pounds, usually 97. My doctor wants me to reach 107-110. I’ve never had anything remotely to an eating disorder, I just simply wish I could gain weight easier. I’m sure this would help many other people as well! Thank you so much for this video! I too grew up in a family that was primarily artistic and I was into performing arts and couldn't see myself in a scientific career. However, I currently am in a dead end job that I hate and nutrition has always been an "interest" of mine. (I put quotations around that because I aways looked at it as unachievable, therefore it became labeled a hobby in my mind as with most interests..if that makes sense.) Can't wait for the video on the differences between Dietitians and Nutritionists! I have a question on intuitive eating when it comes to legitimately being diagnosed OCD. (I have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder that's been diagnosed by a psychiatrist.) I love that you are for intuitive eating because it seems the most logical to me. (I grew up with a father who was the cook in our family and would feed us "nutritious" food which was primarily fat free. But he also restricted sugar heavily, and now I think I'm addicted to sugar.)
However, I find myself excusing my poor eating and I thought it could be due to obsessive compulsions or perhaps it is sugar addiction? Or maybe both. But I would be curious to know your thoughts on that.

Love this! I really enjoy watching you speak in a more informal setting. You speak so eloquently! I do have a question though. Did you find your eating disorder ever got in the way of either your studies as a dietitian or your work? I have struggled with one for a long time and I think studying it in school/working in a field involving food might have just made it worse. Would be interested in hearing your thoughts. I think it is really valuable to have dietitians out there with disordered eating histories who can really understand how complex food can get for some people. Thanks Abbey!
